Eric Clapton said that when he first heard Jimi Hendrix play guitar, he felt like just hanging it up, that Jimi's talent was so natural that there was no way he could match it. Anyone who was a real musician back then recognized Jimi as being great.

Wungolioth the way I heard that story is Clapton called Pete Townsend after hearing Hendrix and said something like: you have to get down here and hear him, he’s gonna put us out of work.

That recognition wasn't limited to the rock world. Jazz masters like Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Miles Davis, and Larry Young could hear what was in Hendrix' music. I've also spoken to musicians in the classical, jazz, Indian Raga, African worlds, and they all love Hendrix.

Talkin Bout Nawlins: You are correct they all do owe their souls to a lot of early blues men who came before them. I didn’t mean to suggest otherwise. Just relaying a story I heard and is probably not quite accurate but gets to the point: the awe Clapton felt that night seeing and hearing Hendrix live. That’s all.

Old white dude here, and Hendrix was the first black musician I really got into. Sure, I’d listened to the Motown artists, but Jimi was so outside the mold of what Berry Gordy was producing.... He mixed blues and rock with his incredible talent and ground-breaking technique, and that mellow, soulful voice!
Now, to you, Pink: Okay, so if you liked this, then do yourself a favour and listen to Hendrix with the Band of Gypsies.... whereas The Jimi Hendrix Experience was Jimi backed by a couple of British guys, the Gypsies were the incomparable Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums.
    Do it!

The first black musician? Really? We must be the same age thereabouts. There were such magnificent black groups from late 50s to early 60s who "crossed over" to get on "white" radio and national TV shows. The Pretenders, Four Tops, Supremes. the Temptations? I could go on and on.
In fact, political African Americans criticized Hendrix when he was alive for performing "white music," though as this reactor knows, and even my teenage self knew way back then, rock'n'roll came totally from R&B, gospel and jazz.

Nobody broke down racial barriers like Jimi did in my view. I have heard many fans of southern rock spew hatred, but all bow their heads and bring themselves to respect this man. I loved him and idolized him since 1979, when I was in the 9th grade. He purportedly was upset that most Afro Americans were not into his music, which near the end of his career, seemed to reach out with more funk, blues, jazz, and this whole other groove which he claimed he heard inside his head, material which those close to him said would have changed modern music and taken it in a whole new direction. He passed before we got to hear that, so we will never know. Forever in our hearts, James Marshall Hendrix......

I had only listened to him after hearing that Pete Willis who helped found Def Leppard was a big fan of Hendrix. Pete was kicked out of Leppard for drinking too much after their 3rd albumn had started to be recorded, he pretty much did himself in as a musician by coming into the recording studio too "wasted" to play.
Anyway, Pete liked Jimi, so I HAD to hear Jimi, and I loved Jimi after hearing him.
I loved "all along the watch tower' after hearing it on the movie
Forest Gump" I don't remember IF I heard it before the movie came out. I'm pretty sure I got my first Jimi Hendrix cd in the early 2000's. So it had been several years after hearing about Pete Willis liking Hendrix and "Forest Gump" that I had actually bought Hendrix's music, I had just heard "all along the watchtower" on the "Forest Gump" movie.

@Justin Edwards I agree, after seeing a new show called "1969" on Tv I was shocked about how the cops had made the "Black Panthers" look like THEY had started a "race war" and the COPS had massacred a house full of Black Panther members as they slept, and had made the claim that the cops walked into the house and had fired to "protect themselves" while the "panther" members had fired their weapons on them. You could plainly see in the video from back when it had happened that the cops had fired and there was blood on the mattresses where the Panther members heads had been laying on their pillows. Multiple rounds had been shot at the sleeping Panther members, BUT, back then nobody in power wanted to hear what REALLY happened.

I was a young white English kid living in a small country town when I chanced upon Jimi's music about the time Hey Joe was released and began to be played on the radio. So started a lifelong love of not only Jimi's music but black American music of all types. Nothing broke the barriers of understanding and acceptance down greater than the music. I am surprised that he has not been recognised more for his outstanding contribution to us all. Thank you so much for your promotion of this aspect of his work and being.

Great reflection /reaction for Black History Month. I'm an old timer now and still a huge Jimi Hendrix, fan. His style of blues is rooted in the oldest form of blues. It's very black and this rendition really caught the essence of this. It is very soulful.
Jimi left way too young, but he was decades ahead of his time. Every electric guitarist who has ever played, owes Hendrix. If he were still alive in this era, music would be different as he changed it in such a short period, he was with us.
He played with a feeling, that nobody else possessed. He was different and showed the world his American-ism, with him playing the every oldest form of blues from both Black and Irish slaves. He amplified it, played feedback, used his wah wah pedal, and added psychedelic realms.
It brought tears to my eyes that people from a younger generation, remember him and appreciate him. Especially, this month.
Great selection. Hey Joe has many. It was written by a cat named Billy Robert's, but made famous because of Jimi.
Also, as a lifetime Jimi Hendrix fan, he did not die of a drug overdose. He had acid reflux, while lying on his back. He choked on his own vomit. We didn't call it acid reflux in those days. But that's what he died from. The perpetuated myth that he died from a drug overdose must be debunked.

His inspiration will live on forever not only as an incredible musician, but also as a man that rose to stardom in a time that wasn't kind to African Americans. It was a sad reflection on societal values to think that a person couldn't rise to greatness because of the color of their skin. Jimi proved them wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt. It's wonderful that you look at Jimi the way you do. Truth is, most african americans hated Jimi and called him a traitor for playing the way he did, acting the way he did and dating white women among other things. I think Jimi was too far ahead of his time, and is still is. He was a wonderful soul, extremely humble, gracious and stand up guy. He was african, indian and irish, he had some strong roots! I'm not black, but for me a touching line is "Ain't no hang man gonna put a rope around me", I think the way he sang it, it was deeper than the song and a reflection of the times. As a young man, Jimi changed my life, I'm only 27, but music is the best gift there is in life and as a young kid, it was the only thing that really touched my soul and calmed me. I remember late at night laying in bed after a long school day, listening to Hendrix non stop some nights, made the world a better place, well for me anyways. You should do a reaction video of Cream playing Crossroads (live album version is the best) it'll blow you away, and Eric Clapton was one of Jimi's idols.

This reaction was beautiful. Music crosses borders that people are not willing to cross on their own. I remember Metallica playing in Dubai a bunch of years ago and James Hetfield said that there were people in the crowd from Israel and Palestine, all brought together by music. Wonderful video!

    • @ruinsane100
      @ruinsane100 6 лет назад +4

The saddest part about "borders" is that they are 100% man-made constructs. We draw these imaginary lines and then live our lives imprisoned. They keep us from loving fully and they cause so much suffering for those "on the other side" of those lines. Every one of us is conditioned in that way and the only way out is to de-condition, break down walls, step over boundaries and love everyone. Period.

I'm a 48 year old white male and Jimi Hendrix had a MASSIVE impact on my life and has been inspirational to me since I got my first guitar in 1983. I spent hours and hours pretending to be him while playing his albums and air-guitaring until I could start playing his songs. I probably wore through more than one Are You Experienced albums. I owned everything put on VHS in terms of live music, interviews, everything. To me he was one of the coolest people to ever walk the planet up there with Siddhartha, Bob Marley and Bruce Lee. He wasn't just cool, but down to earth, humble, and spiritual.
I just wanted to share because being who I am and who you are we have a connection through him that transcends decades, all the BS about skin color, age, etc. I wish he was still alive - think of how many great albums and songs he would have given the world. If you haven't heard them yet I think the songs he wrote that would be up your alley because of both the lyrics and music are "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Castles Made of Sand." Thanks for sharing!

One thing history left out was that Hendrix's music was criticized by the Black-talking heads at that time for not going the route of Motown. This didn't make Jimi happy. Well, I'm old enough to have seen Hendrix twice and young enough to enjoy his great music. Before his death, he was in discussion to tour with another band. They were, Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They were going to call themselves, HELP. What a show that would have been. RIP Uncle Jimi.

Six years ago I helped a pickup maker reverse engineer Hendrix '65 pickups, specifically for me. I've been aspiring to play his music like he did and still consider him the best of the best. If you listen to his interviews he was incredibly humble, self-deprecating, sensitive and very intelligent. When complimented on being the best guitarist in the world he said he was "the best guitarist sitting in this chair". His playing is deceptively complex and his very original. This was the break though that blew the best guitarist away. Clapton and Beck said they were holding each other watching him in awe. Clapton still gets choked up when anyone brings up Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi was a pioneer in modern guitar playing. Every single famous and non famous (me) player can credit Jimi for technique one form or another. He broke the color barrier in hard rock when it was mostly white. Sure, many at first resented a black man playing their music, but with time, Jimi won over them. He is by far one of the best. The guitar techniques you saw is child's play for him. He's done way crazier things than that. Unfortunately, that era was very influenced by drugs, especially heroin. Who knows what he may have done if he were alive today.
I think you'll get very emotional if you see him play the national anthem in Woodstock. That gets ME every time.
He left way too soon. :(

Morgan Freeman said it best when asked about Blk history month. Black history is American history it’s not a month. My parents are immigrants and my wife’s parents are immigrants and they are now Americans. So many teams, how about team people? Sorry for the preaching it’s just that music is so pure and free It’s hard to see it labeled by anything but music not by what race or gender you are.

I had a younger friend that was developing into a really killer bass player, and I had helped him as much as I was able. One night, I taught him "Hey Joe" because Jimi was my favorite guitar player, and the bass line was so much of the backbone of the song. He took to the song so well, I could see the understanding of what he finally learned just blossom on his face. About a year later, he fell asleep at the wheel of his pickup, and crashed into a concrete barrier. I can't ever hear "Hey Joe" without thinking about Mike Sharp, and the promise lost that he represents. Yeah, I was crying too.

Robert Johnson was one of the most influential guitar players in history. He influenced everyone who later influenced everyone else. Jimi Hendrix was said to believe he was the reincarnation of Robert Johnson. R.J. is also the topic of the song "Crossroads" by Eric Clapton, and the inspiration of that movie of the same name that had that awesome scene with Steve Vai.
The story goes that Robert Johnson played in the clubs along the Mississippi Delta in the late 20s and early 30s. People thought he was "Okay", but nothing special. Then, he disappears for a year, and when he returns, he's phenomenally better than anyone else. It was said he went to a dusty crossroads where he met the devil, and sold his soul to play guitar better than anyone.

Damn, Mona, you and Jimi got me crying too. If you need more rock/metal ideas for BHM, the band King's X (a really unique sounding and highly respected band that's hard to categorize) features African American singer, Doug Pinnick. I recommend either of the songs "Shoes" or "Black the Sky". I also recommend the metal band Oceans of Slumber with singer Cammie Gilbert. Their song "Decay of Disregard" is pure fire. Be sure to watch the video. If you like Amy Lee's voice (I know you do), you're going to love Cammie.

I also miss the band God Forbid. Their song "End of the World" is one of my favorite metal songs ever. They need more recognition even though they are not together now.

Honor the real greatest for black history month.
The man who started it all and shaped most modern music.

You owe no apology for your emotional reaction - the fact that Jimi died so young makes all of us sad. Too many who had such talent were taken from us at a young age, but the music they created lives on and we can be thankful for that. Blessings to you.

I don't understand why anyone would look down on you for the color of your skin? I have watched many of your videos and you are a wonderful young woman. I really enjoy watching your vids. And I'm a republican. Not that that should matter.

Mike in the CURRENT administration, it DOES matter, and I am thinking you mentioned that because you MAY feel the need to for a good reason. I'm not trying to start anything BUT, you seem to have said what you said for a good reason.

@@juliegogola4647 I think what he means is that men and women who are courageous and artistic enough to build bridges of peace across vast cultural and racial divides are also beautiful people; as is this young lady.
What she is doing on this channel and what she is representing is a beautiful thing, and very similar to what those like Hendrix did, albeit on a smaller scale. I read his comment as a vote of respect, support and encouragement to keep going.
Jimi was (and still is) a boyhood hero to every white boy (like myself) that ever picked up a guitar. We all wished we could be that good, that confident and that cool; we also really admired his inner strength and courage at facing the hostility of those times with such stage-borne boldness, disarming humility and high-profile visibility. He seemed to speak to us all directly through music; not as young white boys, but as people who loved music - the whole package he presented was bright as the sun and impossible to ignore. His charisma and his message were only surpassed in magnitude by men like Dr. Martin Luther King (who tops the list) and Muhammed Ali (a close second, and the only childhood sports hero of mine whose death brought me to tears).
Heck we still wish we could be half that cool even today, as old men! lol

@@lindanadeau1884 I don't either. I have just found out recently that where I live there was "Jim Crow" law in force way after the Civil War. I live in SW Pa, kinda near Pittsburgh, Pa. I am in my 40's close-ish to 50. I thought all that BS was in the South, BUT, apparently NOT. I saw a show on TV on a PBS channel, you know, a channel that is LOCAL . Much of what they show is LOCAL programing, BUT, some is just a general EDUCATION type of programming. I was shocked to hear that way up North where I live, well, CLOSE to my hometown, the whole "racism" as in having black folks still fearing for their lives in the 50's and 60's in SOME neiborhoods, I was ware that many bigots still were around kinda like "dregs" in a bottle of mostly "good" liquor or tea, whatever.
As for black folks NOT respecting "darker" black folks as much as "lighter" black folks, I would've thought (no disrespect meant) it would be the opposite.
To anyone of color reading this, I would think that the lighter folks would be "less black" and be picked on, NOT the darker people.
I'll admit I hadn't had any black friends in school, BUT, there weren't many black kids in my school. IF I had to GUESS, there were about 15% black kids vs White kids in MY schools from Kindergarden to High school. I am a person who only has a few friends I NOW keep in touch with anyway. I'm an introvert pretty much. I hope this doesn't sound funny BUT, I wish I could go out in the sun without turning into a LOBSTER, so, a bit darker BASE skin would be really helpful. I went to Virginia Beach this past summer and in 1 day, I was so red, I had to hide under a, umbrella for the last 2 days. I sat in a chair with my legs and lower torso in the water, just letting the waves roll over my legs and all that, 2 hours, I was as red as a freakin LOBSTER, I'm NOT even kidding. I was so freakin HOT, I had to blast the AC all night. My genetic test told me I'm mostly Eastern European, the rest was Northern European,so I need to go to Virginia Beach in October, MAYBE Sept. I don't mean to downplay any racism by my Virginia Beach horror story, I am just stating my sunburn experience. I've had a few drinks also, so, I hope I haven't been too stupid here.
