Great job! For those who are worried, you can also check what bios version your motherboard came with on the little barcode sticker next to the cpu socket, it's the four last numbers. You can then check compatibility lists to see if you need to update your firmware before installing cpu.
Are you sure? I just opened mine and there are two barcodes, neither of which have even a relatively similar last 4-digits to the ASUS BIOS & Firmware page.
Just ran through this step by step as this is my first build and wanted to point out an error that I had that others might be struggling with, as well as the solution. I could not get my BIOS to flash on three separate occasions over the last year. Was getting frustrated because I was doing everything in the checklist. BIOS correct. Name correct. USB 2.0, FAT32, Root of the USB... This is not my first rodeo... but it would fail every attempt. If you have a new enough CPU model that is not supported by the BIOS version that came with your motherboard from the factory, then system will probably not POST. Updating the BIOS to a new enough version that supports your CPU will fix that problem. It is also possible you might also have other problems that are preventing your system from POSTing.

Hey im goign to get that cpu and motherboard, how is the motherboard i have some questions, is the motherboard good, wifi working and Bluetooth, did the update fix the CPU issues like burning.
For people who are stuck with a solid green light do this: Download and open Rufus Boot selection: MS-DOS File System: FAT32 Cluster size: 8192 bytes Hit Start Copy the renamed bios file on the stick and flash the bios. I tried 2 usb sticks that I often use for installing a clean windows on systems, regular format in windows, placing the bios file and flashing did not work for me (tried everything), green light flashed few times and then became solid. Formatting the USB-sticks in windows was the issue. Tested with a Verbatim PinStripe USB 2.0 32 GB and a SanDisk Ultra 64GB USB 3.0.
I want to confirm. I am building with this motherboard and a Ryzen 7 7800x3d. Anything after bio version 1409, will be fine as well? Just wanted to confirm before doing anything. Thanks!
Hi Glenn! Great video - very clear. Im hoping you can help with my issue! I'm attempting this on a new ASUS mobo and 9800x3d and I think im following the procedure correctly (file name, correct mobo, correct usb slot), but its still blinking 3 times, making an attempt, and then solid green light. I came to this a little differently. I built the system, adding GPU and (perhaps fatally) storage from a prior system, intending to use a Windows boot USB to reinstall OS. Prior to POST/BIOS, it's throwing a "New CPU installed: fTPM/PSP NV corrupted error, Y to continue" - but my USB keyboard does not respond in any port. I've reset the CMOS, pulled the mobo battery, and removed all storage - same behavior. My thought was that a BIOS flash could help, but I can't get it to take. Any ideas?
Great tutorial, only slight amend from my experience is you do not need to have the 8 pin connected only the 24 pin motherboard power cable if you’re completing the update on the board prior to connection any other components.
ASUS (and all of the other motherboard manufacturers) claim that the 12V EPS cable is required for this procedure, even with no CPU installed. I have never tried doing this without having the 12V EPS cable plugged in, so I can't confirm whether it is required or not.
In the process of doing this. I have tried 3x so far and it keeps a solid green 😢. I searched a bit on forums and someone said to try doing it with the renamer tool which was renaming it without .CAP at the end. It’s still a CAP file though. It’s working so far 😮
Hello, thank you for your video ! i'm going to receive this week this exact motherboard with 7800x3d CPU. Should i just plug it to my supply and dont plug the CPU first to update the bios ? Thank you
Hello, I will be buying this motherboard soon and I was wondering if it's still needed to it in this way with the 7800x3d, or can you just install it like usual? This seems pretty easy too, is this the easiest way to update your BIOS?
Depending on when your exact motherboard was manufactured, you may or may not need to do this in order to get the system to POST. It just depends on what BIOS version it had when it left the factory in Taiwan. If your system will POST, it is easier to use the built-in EZ Flash 3 feature in the BIOS setup program. Otherwise, you can use this method.
I don’t know how much help this will be, but for the 650E-E, BIOSRenamer says you need the “.CAP” at the end of the bios file when renaming it, but when I ran that, it automatically renamed it without the “.CAP”. I added the “.CAP” manually and my system would not blink after 2-3 seconds, after plugging the drive into my motherboard and hitting the bios button. It worked, though, after I renamed the file to not include “.CAP”. The blinking goes faster on the motherboard once it “captures” that bios file from your thumb drive and took only a few minutes for it to run its course.
Thank you for this ideo, just ordered moterboard and ryzen 7 7800x3d and i had no idea about this. My file was renamed but it didn't add the ''.CAP'' in the end but it is a cap file. That normal ?
Yes it is (if you don't have file extensions enabled on Windows Explorer). That is the default behavior in Windows (not having file extensions enabled). That is why you don't see the .cap at the end of the file name.
Amazing video, very clear and helpful, thanks. I could flash the bios, but unfortunately I still have the same problem. When I try to jump the motherboard with a screwdriver to test my build (the cooler, GPU and CPU are connected and installed but everything is still out of the case) nothing happens... I mean, the logo lights turn on when I connect the MOBO to the PSU, but when I insert a screwdriver in the PowerSwitcher Pins to boot (tried with multiple ones) the fans don't spin and no LED light turns on signaling me an error. Nothing happens! I have the fans connected, all CPU pins are connected to the PSU, I used the cable that comes with the PSU to plug it to the GPU, the GPU is also connected to the TV using an hdmi (I think this is fine? I want to use it as a monitor). Am I not seeing something? Perhaps it's too obvious, I'm just a newbie when it comes to hardware and cables... Maybe I screwed the Cooler too hard? But I don't think the mobo wouldn't even start if that were the case.
For me to get to work I needed to keep whatever the "rename" name it gave the file . Make sure it was down loaded through chrome web browser ,it worked with the USB 3 but not USB 2 for some reason . also make sure double check u un zip the file . I do not know where I would be without you Vid and the comments in this section it really helped me out thanks .
Very clear instructions tx. But plz What does POST mean? (as in "Do I need to do this if my system will already POST" at 7,53m ) And how do I know if my Bios needs an update when it's not connected yet?
POST means "Power On Self Test". It is a routine that your computer goes through every time you turn it on to see if the hardware is working properly, before it tries to load the operating system. If your system will POST, then you can flash the BIOS using the built-in BIOS Flash utility (EZ Flash 3). Otherwise, you would have to use the procedure shown in this video to flash the BIOS.
in this video there is written "if your system post, then you should use regular asus ez flash3", but why a lot of people in reddit and asus forum (me included) cant update with it? system literally crash in the same second you press ENTER when motherboard ask if i wanna update... i got this motherboard more than a year ago and i can only update it with flashback (and not everytime, i have to fight a lot to make it work) any advice? sorry for my bad english

Mobo should be working, i did paperclip test (the fan turned then stopped tho) i have 650e-e and msi 1000w power supply. Dont know what is wrong. First time i assembled a pc but not working at all. 😢
Hello, fantastic video, I've dropped you a sub :) I'm about to start a new build with a new version of this same motherboard and a new 7700X CPU - Now with the Asus announcement to update to latest BIOS that includes a cap on SOC voltage at 1.3V on 7000 series CPUs (to prevent the overvolting) - this has made me hesitant to just install the new CPU and boot. I'm assuming the usual start up process of BIOS would not have an overvoltage risk anyway, even on older/default BIOS out the box? Or would you suggest going ahead with this approach to flash the latest BIOS version (1807) before installing the CPU to play it safe? Many thanks
Thanks for the sub! Your system should POST with that CPU, even with an older BIOS version. If it will POST, it is easier to use the built-in BIOS update utility inside of the BIOS setup program to flash the BIOS. If you have not built the system yet (or even if you have), you can still use the procedure shown in this video to flash the BIOS to the latest version. Getting your motherboard on the latest BIOS version is what I would recommend, however you decide to do it. I don't think the voltage issue is a big risk that you have to immediately take care of, but being on the latest BIOS version is just a good idea. rog.asus.com/us/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b650e-f-gaming-wifi-model/helpdesk_bios/

@@GlennBerrySQL all went smooth. didnt have to update in order to receive post. Got windows installed and everything. However, I WAS NOT ABLE TO POST unless I disabled fan monitoring. All of my fans are plugged into corsair 5000d case fan hub or the corsair controller hub for my AIO water cooler. I did fix this issue by disabling fan monitoring since all of my fans were confirmed to be running. Again, ALL fans are actually up and running so it is more or less a fake error. Oh but one thing. The BIOS renamer did not work for me. At least I think it didn't. It says it renamed to SB650EF.CAP in the prompt but file name just showed SB650EF

@GlennBerrySQL so you're saying I possibly named it .CAP.CAP? What would that do exactly? Cuz the PC definitely doesn't seem right
@GlennBerrySQL yep just enabled the file name extensions, plugged the flash drive in and sure enough it's .CAP.CAP

Having trouble booting my new system with pretty newly released parts... here's to hoping!!!
If you have a new enough CPU model that is not supported by the BIOS version that came with your motherboard from the factory, then system will probably not POST. Updating the BIOS to a new enough version that supports your CPU will fix that problem.
It is also possible you might also have other problems that are preventing your system from POSTing.

For people who are stuck with a solid green light do this:
Download and open Rufus
Boot selection: MS-DOS
File System: FAT32
Cluster size: 8192 bytes
Hit Start
Copy the renamed bios file on the stick and flash the bios.

This is my first time building a pc so this is very appreciated. Strangely the motherboard still demands a reboot with a proper boot device.
Well, if the BIOS doesn't see a boot device, it will complain about it even after a BIOS update.

Any ideas?
This was super helpful, 100X better than the actual ASUS video ahahah!
Thanks! I'm glad the video was helpful.
Thanks!
@@GlennBerrySQL ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI II - only the 24 pin motherboard power cable required

Yes. Just make sure to download and rename the BIOS file for that exact motherboard model.

Thanks! Because I'm part of a group that gives help for build and they say that this motherboard has a voltage issue which makes me double think.
Thank you
With that CPU, you will probably have to update the BIOS before your system will POST. The video shows you how to do it.
Great vid! your hard work and effort on this is greatly appreciated!
Very Helpful! Thank you.
You are welcome! I'm glad the video was useful.
you're a life saver. Thank you for uploading!!!
You're welcome!
@@GlennBerrySQL alright, thanks for the help!
The most helpful video I’ve watched! You’ve just earned a sub!
Thanks!
You saved me, Glenn! You just gained a subscriber. Thank you, good sir!
You are welcome! Thanks!
Glad you got it working!
Good job on getting it working.
Thank you so much for this video. Made things sooo simple!!! :)
Crystal clear. Tx 4 reply

Hello, fantastic video, I've dropped you a sub :)
I'm about to start a new build with a new version of this same motherboard and a new 7700X CPU - Now with the Asus announcement to update to latest BIOS that includes a cap on SOC voltage at 1.3V on 7000 series CPUs (to prevent the overvolting) - this has made me hesitant to just install the new CPU and boot.

You have to have the two power cables connected, but nothing else is required to be installed.
Hey Glenn, how likely will it be that I do not experience this issue ? I am planning on getting this motherboard with the ryzen 9 7900x first thing tomorrow morning.. im going to get a usb2.0 to make sure that it works instead of a USB3. But I have the cap file downloaded onto my usb 3 drive .
With a Ryzen 9 7900X, the motherboard should have a new enough BIOS version on the motherboard so you won't have to use this procedure. If the system will POST, it is easier to use the built-in BIOS flash utility in the BIOS setup program. Good luck!
@@GlennBerrySQL all went smooth. didnt have to update in order to receive post. Got windows installed and everything. However, I WAS NOT ABLE TO POST unless I disabled fan monitoring. My AIO pump was detected (plugged into pump header on motherboard) but NO CPU fans, or case fans were detected. All of my fans are plugged into corsair 5000d case fan hub or the corsair controller hub for my AIO water cooler. I did fix this issue by disabling fan monitoring since all of my fans were confirmed to be running. Again, ALL fans are actually up and running so it is more or less a fake error.
BIOS update did not fix issue however. And it is updated to correct version. Do I need at least 1 fan plugged into the motherboard if I really want to fix this not serious yet slightly inconvenient issue ? Since, again, it is not real. From the little I have read online, the only way to fix the issue is to plug in one cpu fan into a fan header on the motherboard.
