    Not that I disagree, but here's a counterpoint: Consider the technological improvements brought about by WW2. That doesn't mean we should start a WW3. It's an excellent idea to backup your PC, but crucial to clean the malware _before_ doing so.

    When I was forced to beg for my healthcare, I didn't care that all our money goes to everything else. I was like.. space? fund it. Billionaires? Fund them. Tax breaks for billionaires? Sure why not. More war? Blank check. Now I like space and exploring but I do feel that we have big problems here that need to be solved first before we let the ultra rich escape to a different planet after they have trashed ours.

    • @coreysuffield
      @coreysuffield 2 года назад +6

      yeah, but currently everything we've done in space has been on a FRACTION of 1% of (U.S.)our money, like less than .5%, if you are concerned about solving problems stopping space r&d, IS NOT THE SOLUTION. you should ask where is 99.5% of the rest of the money is being spent. there is a 14 to 1 RETURN on investment on space technologies, that means for every dollar spent on developing technologies for going into space we GET $14 worth of value on that dollar spent

      @@iversonmatthew healthcare isn't a money problem. The system designed to cover people's healthcare needs is the issue. Talking about taxes is easy to sell to the public while changing a messed up healthcare system is hard. Part of why space is a good investment is the freedom to invent and explore. It's uncharted territory where human ingenuity prosper.
      Our health care system is basically locked in place. The room to innovate there is tiny in comparison. I'd love for it to not be this way, but it is. Meanwhile something amazing might come out of this new human adventure, so awesome that it can't be ignored, and we all get the benefit from it.

    Great work with MOXIE. I have a few questions,
    1. Is there any plan for deployment of MOXIE on earth? It can do wonders I assume.
    2. Invasion from other species - we believe species from outer space could be much more intelligent than us. Why haven't they done any harm to us yet, the earth is pretty damn old, the universe is even much older! Do we have any proof of their existence yet?
    3. Saving humanity sounds great ( although humanity refers to qualities that we often don't possess). How much work is being done considering the habitats of other species, to save the whole ecosystem, instead of just men?
    4. Just a comment, exploration is primitive human nature. But the irony is the pandemic was a side-effect of globalization. We always want to find something new, more exciting, yet, we don't know half the species dead or alive on earth!
    5. Solar system is worth time and energy, for sure! We learned a lot from the moon and the space so far. But what is the current financial investment ratio for exploration outside the solar system and inside the solar system? Are we scientifically equipped enough to deal with the first? Outer species won't come from within the solar system I assume.
    6. What are the economical and sales aspects of the Mars mission? ( Was not highlighted). If being rich enough to afford a place on the Mars and the Moon is a criteria for short listing, I don't think what would survive would be humanity.
    7. Based on recent data from several countries , I am assuming the population on earth has reached a plateau. What makes you think people would want to leave for Mars to live in the desert if we can make a sustainable future right here?
    We have never been a good species on earth, we never learned to live with the nature and the other species. We just cared about ourselves. Or actually, we are not the best species ( probably the worst). So I don't think Mars will have a bright future with humans on it. I am a chemist, I believe in curiosity, exploration and inventions, and I am impressed with MOXIE. I just struggled a lot in the why we need to do this on Mars right now explanation part. Thanks!

      @@davos. Oxygen level is depleting on earth due to fossil fuel burning. Also there is a loss of dessolved oxygen in the water. While this is not an immediate concern, CO2 has been a villain as a greenhouse gas for so long that converting it to anything else would be useful ( methanol etc). Using MOXIE, you can at least reduce CO2 and the side product CO can be stored to produce energy. It's like artificial photosynthesis, except without using water and through electricity. CO2 can be directly converted to methanol through formate and not CO ( because harmful), since they are already getting CO, I am assuming that can be used as well.

      We cannot establish a permanent base on moon, as there’s no atmosphere no oxygen very little water in the form of Ice and that too in just one crater………… But we can establish a temporary base which would run on cargo, so it’s better to colonise Mars first……….. and maybe moon too, I love Mars 🙂 It’s just so cool and colonising it, is possible! @@Overonator letme just tell you, Mars has water and I mean a lot of water……. It’s soil is made up of 60% of water….. and there’s underground water as well…….. And only if we melted it’s polar ice caps, most of the planet would be covered under 30 feet of water……. Whereas on moon it has water in the form of Ice in just one small crater………! Just one crater…….! And second of all Mars has an atmosphere, and a weak magnetic field too ! I mean it’s atmosphere is 100 times thinner than here on Earth but still it has an atmosphere! Where as on moon there’s no atmosphere! No protection from the deadly radiations of the sun! And if you look at the Mars, it has 96% of Co2 and 0.2% oxygen…….. but oxygen isn’t the problem anymore! Coz NASA’s Moxie could turn co2 into oxygen………. It can breakdown Co2 into oxygen coz co2 is mostly oxygen combined with carbon atoms! So there’s oxygen, there’s water, there’s an atmosphere, and a weak magnetic field too……. But the moon lacks in everything! And if you still wanna continue this debate……. Which doesn’t even stand a chance then I don’t have time for this srry!

    • @Overonator
      @Overonator 2 года назад

      @@NOTycyborg Okay am not going to argue the water and oxygen part but that atmosphere and weak magnetic field is useless form of protection because it's so weak. Sure the moon basically offers no protect but Mars is better than none but it's still effectively useless. It's like saying getting shot once in the head is better than getting shot 2 times in the head. Yeah but you are likely death regardless. Wouldn't people have to live underground on the moon or Mars regardless? The Moon is much closer and we could send stuff much easier, faster, cheaper than for Mars.

      @@Overonator bruh, once green house gasses will be released on Mars and co2 from its surface the atmosphere will increase its pressure………. And living on Moon is like digging your own coffin………. Because of the deadly radiation…….. whereas on Mars radiation wouldn’t be that much………. And one company is trying make 3d printed pressurised homes for Mars……….. and achieving great success………. So people would live in 3d printed homes on Mars not underground………… and gravity is also an important point……….. and what is the point of colonisation if you can’t have a self-sustaining colony? Moon requires cargo from earth to sustain life where there’s high risk of developing cancer………. But on the other hand Mars will be self sustainable after we’ll start to use its resources and it’s a better and safer place then Moon! Moon has less surface area and gravity with no atmosphere with almost 0 amount of water with no oxygen and there’s high risk of developing cancer…………! And not to forget that it will be fully dependent on Earth’s cargo………..! If you still wanna go there then sure go ahead 👍 🥳

    The number one mistake people do when reacting to this is comparing it to all other problems on earth.
    Why Mars is exciting, is because it's uncharted territory where human ingenuity gets to flourish. There's very few rules. No institutions hundred of years old telling you what you can't do.
    Things move very slowly on earth. Because we are here already. Our problems have been identified since a long time ago. Yet we are fantastically bad at solving them. Usually because there's always someone benefitting from the problems existing and we're awful at helping said people move on to a different occupation or move them physically to a different location. If you feel space takes up too much time and attention, think about the problems you yourself think are more important. Then how long we've been trying to solve them. The answer will be decades. Multiple different politicians, parties and an insane amount of broken promises.
    Space exploration generates far more progress in a shorter period of time. Some inventions have been so awesome they can't be ignored and they've made everyone's live better. Space equals humans unchained.
    Meanwhile, reflect on if you yourself and your lack of flexibility is part of why Earths problems never change. Maybe stop voting in the same politicians you've always voted for. Self reflection goes a long way to solve our most pressing problems.

Why would it be any better on another planet? Humanity needs to live well and in Harmony with the planet. People now a days are so sick of each other and sometimes even them selves, why would this be diferente on another planet, please tell me. Especially on a planet that is not our home base and doesn't have the best resources for our survival and evolution as a species.

    Mars is definitely a very important step, but I'm curious what makes colonizing it of higher importance than colonizing the moon, which humanity still hasn't so much as made a temporary base on. Is it because there's no way to make it self-sufficient?
    On second thought, please don't read the comments.

    EARTH (i.e) PLANETS ARE LIKE ISLANDS IN THE OCEAN (i.e,) GALAXY😲😃 People of some thousands year in future will get their minds blown like how our ancestors thought of our travel far and wide btwn countries / will think of how far and wide traveling in space 😉👏

    Sure settling Mars will help improve life on Earth, but who is going to be living on Earth and who is going to do the hard work in terraforming Mars? Like his wife said, who would want to live on Mars? Those desperate enough to venture to and live in a hostile environment like Mars. Maybe we should make sure our society on Earth is equitable before we spread this inequity plaguing our planet across the solar system?
