In this lesson we'll take an introductory look at pneumatic compressors and compressor control. We'll explore the inner workings of single stage and multistage reciprocating piston compressors, rotary vane compressors, rotary screw compressors, and scroll compressors. Additionally, we'll examine fixed speed compressor control methods like valve throttling and variable displacement compressors and variable speed compressor control methods like start-stop compressor control and motor drives. Scroll compressors are increasingly common in domestic heat pumps and AC systems. One thing I didn't understand about these devices is the way they don't require high torque to startup because the pump doesn't have to overcome system back pressure to begin spinning. So, efforts to boost starting torque with hard start kits are usually unnecessary and ineffective.
