- If I remember correctly, this is from a show celebrating 20 years of Punk/New Wave. When Nick came on I hit the rewind button instead of the record button, and ended up missing half the song.

Delicious. I love Nick. Thank you.
Yes mate, this was aired in 1986 on a docu about punks 10th aniv. Mind blowing performance, thanks for sharing. Btw I remember Elvis Costello on the same show doing 'Alison'.
yay! Finally found this on the tube.
I have looking for this for a long time. Thanks
I have looked for this for so long...Thank you for uploading! It was shown on a documentary hosted by Tony Wilson (R.I.P.) entitled 'The Way They Were', lots of excellent musical experiences filmed by (then) Granada TV. @CityOfSheffieldFilms, yep there was a 'poor quality though invalualable' first TV appearance by Elvis Costello performing the spine-tingling 'Alison'. Thank you again...The way they sadly no longer are, Cheers Penny X
The first line is missing,
“When you’re hanging on a thread,
Clutching on a straw”
However, thank you for the upload. I’ve never forgotten this since I saw it in 1986….
This whole program was an inspiration to me and my bandmates when we first started playing our instruments
In the darkest night, just before falling asleep, I listened to this beauty.....for months and months. (late 70's-early 80 as far as I remember)
I never knew who sang. We didn't have google then....(but loads and lots of quality alive-real-time), and this song stayed by me since then.
I can't describe the feeling when listening to this lyrics....intense, in the dark...it just is one of those songs that blew me totally away...knocked me out, love...at it's finest!
Leo Kottke did a version of this. I wish I could find it. Thanks for posting this.
wow -- great!
Leo Kotke's 1978 album. BURNT LIPS.........great version of Endless Sleep
Presumably filmed on one of the Stiff Records package tours, with Elvis Costello and Larry Wallis there on stage?
No,filmed by Granada tv at Eric’s , Liverpool, Nick did a three song set , Elvis did about 30 mins and Rockpile about the same.
Entrance fee 50p . The Elvis stuff is available
Someone please give us Leo Kottke's sadly beautiful version ...
De gustibus non est disputandum, boyo.
