I breed hundreds of mandarins, sadly most people really don't care . Hobbyist want a cheap fish over Tank breed fish. Most people in this hobby just don't care about saving natural reefs and fish. That's why you don't see many people breeding these fish. They sell for $10-$15 at stores, yet to sell them commercially they would need to be $100 each.
Shrimp Zoo the new captive bred are $50 not bad. I think $100 price point would be if you are not mass breeding them. That said the fish come in at 1/4” big. Really love them
I agree. I'm wanting to start a reef tank, and I want to try and have only captive bred fish. I really want a mandarin, and have been researching a lot about them due to the difficulty of keeping them. I'm willing to pay the money for a captive bred mandarin, especially if it eats flake food like this. Do you know where I could shop for all captive bred fish and corals? Also, do you sell your mandarins online?
This is awesome news. This fish is why I initially got in the hobby a few years back. I still consider myself a beginner so I have not kept one in my tank yet, but this shows that it might be a possibility in the near future. Thanks for sharing. Now if someone could figure this out for seahorses my wife could have her dream fish too!
I have had a mandarin I bought from liveaquaria a year ago. Easiest fish I ever kept. Just dump a container of reef pods into my Refugium every 4 months.
I've had my mandarin along with a scooter blenny and a leopard wrasse for about 1 month now. I FEEL LIKE A TANK BOSS NOW! (Hopefully I can keep them alive)
Wow! Awesome. I love those fish and never got one cause I was afraid he'd starve maybe. I hope the captive bred ones are readily available in future. Wow.
All we ever get locally is half starved wild caught fish. I've tried three times, and lost the fish 3 times even though I have a mature 125gal with plenty of pods.
Captive bred and eating flakes?! This... is a blessing

My wc green mandarin ate flake right off the bat.

Am I the only one who sees it spitting out the flakes? It looks healthy though.
It’s chewing on them ;-)
Is he still alive? I love this fish and have failed twice. I'm considering a third attempt with biota
Try bloodworms
It's impossible to find a place that have captive bred mandarin that is not sold out. It makes me mad because I always wanted one
VoZe petco gets them in. I believe they get priority due to the amount they sell.
