Fantastic to see someone taking on such a difficult task to breed these fish for the hobby and ultimately help to reduce numbers taken from the wild well done !!!
Fantastic news about the captive bred mandarin fish, another step forward towards preserving the wild in the oceans. So that’s what Cam was talking about on your previous video. 👍🏴
This is terrific news for the marine aquarium industry. Loved seeing the first 24 captive bred Mandarin Fish from Adam at Reefstock Australia 2019 on the Gallery Aquatica stand. They are so cute, with each one having its own individual pattern (no two are the same) and eating freshly hatched live Brine Shrimp. Some of them had been given names eg. Spot, Mini Mandy, Midge, Fred, Craig, Buddy, Valentine Jnr, Mike Ausalike Totally Adorable animals
It honestly is a tremendous turning point for the industry, I'm a little surprised it didn't get more fanfare at the event - but that's why I wanted to ensure this video captured the news for all who either couldn't attend, or did attend but were blinded by hot corals :P
I have had capitive bred mandarin and are great fish. Mine were a mated pair and eating frozen foods when purchased. Female would only eat daphnia and the male brine. Then female ate brine after growing some. Finally both ate mysis. They spawned at dusk on a regular basis. I would suggest plenty of hiding spaces for females as my male would become quite aggressive periodically. Mine were from ORA here in the States
Fantastic feedback, thank you. I have no doubt these guys would transfer to frozen or even dry food in time. They are still young and small. Once they see other fish eating it, well you know, monkey see monkey do!
Built my tank specifically for this fish, have a few months before the pod population is big enough. The wait is killin me the tank will be a year old before I add it
Had a Mandarin Dragon a really large 4" specimen and its toxic skin killed a couple of colony's of zoa's where it used to sit they closed and quickly shrunk away from its perching spots....had to remove it because of that....not a commonly known con of owning one of them
Never heard of it myself until witnessing it with my own eyes...decided to google mandarin toxicity to then find an Australian Geographic article that informs their skin is covered in tiny venemous little spines and toxic mucus
You sure that's true? I own a captive bred spotted mandarin, he sleeps on a fairly large colony of zoa's for the past 2 months. The zoa's are still doing great to this day.
Yes Rene sadly very true....mine was a Mandarin Dragon (Synchiropus splendidus) and a large one at that perhaps the spotted type like you have don't have the same toxic levels...if you google mandarin dragon toxicity there is an Australian Geographic article about their toxic nature
@@ParkersReef 😂 yeah I’m looking this up bc I’m trying to breed my pair and have baby’s I’m a clownfish breeder to I’m trying to make a Challenge for myself !

@@ParkersReef ill see if Craig at coral madness would be willing to get some in to help this fantastic project as im down for one also
Excellent video Sam! It’s incredible how Adam has been able to captive rear these guys😊
Congrats to you guys for backing his work, the future of our hobby relies on this (in my opinion anyway...)

I’d love to. But I’m stuck in Victoria for a while :)
@@ParkersReef is it something you'd actually consider doing when you have time?
You bet

I suggest mixing some small frozen brine in with their live brine to get them off of live food but I suspect they may be doing this
Only be a matter of time :)
Hi could you please please tell me where I find information about it
Love Adams comment on the mandarin fish, when describing their temperament towards the same colour species as “vicious little bastards” 👍🏴
Haha you wouldn’t think they could be hey?!
And again we crossed out paths! Great content. Do you want a Mandarin (couple?) in your new dream tank?
Yeah potentially, but not for some time until the tank has well matured :)
where can I buy one of these gorgeous guys
Deer park aquarium have some in!

pretty fair price in my opinion for a aquacultured fish of this type?

These guys would be a great achievement following up from clownfish - best of luck 👍🏻
those look mostly green and dull. I'll pass.
they are a green mandarin after. all :P
@@ParkersReef Still, pass.
Hi Sam, thanks for sharing the love as always. I was wondering whats the shop called where we could purchase the mandarins? Thanks
we get access to them once a year and will let people know then. I think all stores have access at the same time :)
@@ParkersReef thanks. Cannot wait
