    It's a short one but I hope you'll enjoy it just the same.

    That’s interesting, I have a similar experience. I had been working on games for years and never finished anything (around 9 years, can you believe it?). There would always be scope creep (or ocd creep, really). Initially, I would make a fair bit of progress, but at some point it would always grind to a halt. Last week, though, I sat down and decided to just make something. Not something good, not something I’d feel proud of, not something with a thoughtful underlying meaning. Just something. I mean, I’d dine it before, but it was different this time, somehow. And, you know what? It actually happened. I sat down and made a working, playable game in about 20 hours. I spent the rest of the week subtly improving the game, adding menus and whatnot so I could let myself release it online. And I did!
    Obviously I’m not bragging. If you’re going through something similar, I don’t think it’s that uncommon. That isn’t to dismiss at all, that’s to say it will get better - but only if you make that happen. It’s really, really, really hard to create a well-designed, fully unique (as if any creative project is fully unique) game, let alone one you’re happy with. So don’t do that. That’s you’re ultimate goal, not your first project. Make something really small, much smaller than you think it should be. Because you can always expand it later (which you probably will, whether you want to or not). If, like me, you can’t seem to finish games, focus on quantity rather than quality. This doesn’t mean the game must look bad, just that you need to switch your primary goal to finishing. When I was making (and not finishing) games for all those years, I might’ve been improving my creative skills. Certainly not game design, but at least brainstorming. But when I finished a game, I learned so much more than I did in lots of those projects combined. Because if you always work on raw prototypes, for instance, you might never have to work on UI.
    Anyway, I just wanted to share a bit about myself. Maybe someone out there in the void might find it helpful / inspiring. I definitely don’t have it figured out, but I’m learning. And if you can’t finish your creative projects, you might have completely different issues than I do. But whatever the case, I’m rooting for you and I really hope you manage to break that cycle. Just remember, your first game isn’t your masterpiece :D

    nice! A great way to add a little bit of style to the character would be to have a little scarf trailing behind the character, you could even make it physics based and pixelise it with a shader. Looking forward to seeing more of this!

    When you do anything creative you just have to make a thing. It doesn’t need to be good and it probably won’t but simply making progress brings motivation. If you can make a schedule for being creative and discipline yourself to just do it you’ll be able to get so much done.

    As a novelist who is presently still an amateur (I don't get paid) but who has been working on his craft for about six years now, I think you've made the right choice.
    It seems that regardless of which art-form we choose, there are consistence advice that we can be given, and one of those is, "If you start something, finish it."
    I've come to modify the advice to be more flexible and consequently more useful to all types of people. Here's some tips in that category:
    1. Finish your project. If you start working on something for more than a week, then complete it.
    2. Make an outline and _stick to that outline._ It affords you nothing if you change everything about what you've made, and will cost you a lot more if you change everything more than once. The fact that you're still technically working on the same project is not evidence that you're still following the advice of finishing what you start: If you work on the same project for three years, and the project looks entirely different every six months, then you have failed.
    3. If the project sucks, finish it anyway. It doesn't matter that it sucks. In fact, if you're still a beginner then it _must_ suck. Sucking is the exact right thing to do if your goal is to improve. If you expect to not suck at any point within your first few projects, then your expectations are astronomically unrealistic and you will self-destruct when they are inevitably unmet.
    4. If you get exhausted of a project, have another idea in mind, and you have very good reasons to abandon the project, and you are going to flat-out refuse to follow the "finish the project" advice in reality, then you can try following it in spirit: Even if you must cut the whole thing short, slap on an ending and do a slapdash once-over edit, _that's still finishing it._ You'll learn from that.
    5. All of that said, *feel free to ignore this advice* if you have good, logical reasons for moving on to something else, and you are not just being lazy, whimsical or discouraged. As you become more skilled, you will almost certainly start things that, frankly, should _not_ be finished because they'd be a waste of your time.
    Lastly, I'll say that the more projects you finish-big or small-the quicker you'll "level up," the more quickly you'll gain understanding of what needs to be done to complete a project, to tell stories, to make something fun, or whatever it is that is pertinent to your particular art-form, and virtually nothing will enhance your skill the way completing a project will.
    Godspeed!

    • @Deynum
      @Deynum  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for this wonderful advice

    • @Selrisitai
      @Selrisitai 2 года назад +1

      @@Deynum Nothing would make me more happy than seeing you succeed!
      I thought of one more thing, which I touched on only slightly in my first message:
      Outline, and _don't deviate from the outline._ I have a friend who has finished multiple books, but during the writing of all of them, he starts strong, loses steam, loses direction, and finally crawls, battered and bruised, across the finished line.
      I recommended outlining, and he did, but to my dismay (and his!) he was unable to resist deviating from that outline drastically. What would happen is that he'd write extemporaneously (off the cuff) and as he explored the richness of characters, he'd have them do various things that did not match his outline. Once he'd changed enough of the story by "allowing" his characters to do things that were not in accordance with the plans he'd already made, he would then have a mostly useless outline, and therefore either have to continue writing the story extemporaneously, or he'd have to make up a new outline that would almost certainly be overridden again by his inability to reign in his impulsive creativity.
      If he had just stuck to his outline, he could have gone back after writing the story and added in new elements, using his understanding of the completed story as a fulcrum for new ideas and interesting character moments, rather than grabbling continually for cohesion in an amorphous story-line.
      I said all that to say this: Get a proof-of-concept, or a minimum viable product (MVP. . wait, MPV? Is that the real term?) as soon as you can, establish the core mechanics as quickly as possible, and _adhere to those mechanics_ as best you can, as much as reasonable (games are admittedly different than writing books) and only once you've finished the core game-play should you go back and expand on it, doing so with the understanding of your limited resources and time and, if applicable, skill.
      I apologize for the long reply but I hope it was at least somewhat interesting and a little bit helpful.
