This show's AW's comic chops. This role was made for him. Kind of an early precursor to arrested development and such. I read a lot about this pilot, it was just a one and done, Great writing by Smigel and Conan. But the great thing was it completely flipped AW's career back from the doldrums, got back on everybody's radar, family guy, voiceovers, etc. He ended up in a beloved cultural icon. Based on press reports and stories I've read since his recent passing, just seemed like a fantastic, fun, humble guy, much loved, living large right up to his final month. RIP Adam...
Totally agree. I'm surprised there hasn't been a concerted effort by them to re-imagine it. Of course, NBC no doubt still owns the rights and will sit on it or only sell for over market-value just to be assholes. It's what they do, and they do it well.
Cannot stop laughing!! This show was *far* ahead of its time. Hysterical premise, sharp writing & fantastic cast, esp Adam West & Bart Braverman. Sorry this wasn't picked up, but glad I finally got to see this pilot. Thanks for uploading this rare treasure :)
Howard Stern's in-depth interview with Conan O'Brien last week touched on this failed pilot. What a shame it was never picked up. This one episode is wittier than a season's worth of most TV fare. It's on a par with Simpsons, certainly - great Eighties parody that works on multiple levels. Be sure to tune into Conan in Cuba March 4!
This is easily the best of the "Brilliant But Cancelled" pilots. I genuinely don't understand why Lookwell wasn't picked up. I'd happily watch a bunch of these!
Same here. This is comedy gold. Every scene is brilliant! It is so unfortunate this show didn't make it past pilot. Adam West is simply perfectly cast here.
First of all...how dare you correct my attempt at You Tube Video Commentary Humor(and Yes, that's a thing...I know because I just made it up:) And B, I love all of your dad's albums!:) Have a great day!:)
A clip of this aired on a television special in the early 1990s hosted by Faith Ford called "The Greatest Shows You never Saw". Around the same time Adam appeared on a similar program called Tropical Punch, a parody of Hawaii Five-O. It aired as part of an anthology series on FOX called "Danger Theater".
"Of course we could have gone to fourth season, but I felt that my character had said everything it had to say" "How did the network feel?" "Similar" HAHAHA!
This is great. (The uncut script can be read in Judd Apatow's humor anthology "I Found This Funny.") Had NBC picked it up, Conan O'Brien (who I went to high school with) might have helped Adam West escape from his Batman persona and show what a dynamo he was without the mask, tights and cape. Alas, it was not to be, so once again Adam West was Batman Forever. But thanks for trying, Conan, and thanks for posting, Mondonitis. Rest in peace, Adam.
I grew up on the wow! bam!, & sock0! of the dynamic duo and was held captive by Adam's voice and delivery...he was quite believable as the aristocratic crime stopper. Later, I always enjoyed seeing him as a talk show guest. I'm sorry I missed the Lookwell series. RIP Mr. West.
I actually wrote the opening theme to this pilot. Conan and Robert wanted a “Mod Squad“ like sound so I did my research and gave them that! I used a friend from college to play the trumpet and played everything else. It was right between Conan leaving SNL and getting his own show in the fall 1993? They were so easy to work with.
Great work from Adam West, Conan and Smigel! This was made before the onslaught of cable and online channels. Nowadays, it would be picked up in a heartbeat. RIP Mr West.
Like many, Black brought me here. This is pure genius. So sad it was never developed as a series. West is fantastic. Shatner could do it, too. He could play himself playing T.J. Hooker, who then thinks he can solve real crimes. Let's make it happen, people! ;-)
R.I.P. Adam West. This was my favourite performance of yours! It's quite close to Mayor West, but it's funnier as Lookwell thinks he's in on the joke as opposed to the Mayor. And thanks also Adam for your Batman work!
just heard of this, picked up from wikipedia entry on Conan. I can see why it wasn't picked up but it is kind of a cute cult item. It strikes me as "police squad meets sledgehammer meets A team"
OMG!! How was this NOT picked up?? I was LOL through the whole show! Hilarious! Better than some of the garbage on TV today!! THANK YOU for posting this!!
How come this isn't on dvd already??? This is one of the funniest shows on tv at that time and still is.Adam, you're the best there is..Couldn't they play this on SPIKETV or something???
The young man playing Lookwell's assistant/student is now one of the most accomplished directors of all time with 14 Academy Award nominations for only a handful of films (he also played the piano player in Stanely Kubrick's Eye's Wide Shut).
As a repeat poster I insist that this is the best comedy production of all time (along with...) 2:30 "Alberti" is posed as if he is handcuffed and when Ty turns up he relaxes. Shit, maybe this is TOO good?
Remember watching this on TV with my Grandpa and we both thought it was hilarious. Thought it was a new series and it never came on again. Always wondered what happened to it. Didn't have internet to let us know it was just a pilot that wasn't picked up. For some reason I thought there were two or three of them though. I guess it's my memory mixing two shows up, but I could have sworn the episode ended with him leaning on a trunk of a car that popped open and he accidentally solved the crime with whatever was inside.
I saw Adam West yesterday in Philly at a Q&A and he told us all about this. He said it was his favorite pilot that he made and that he was very upset when it was picked up for a season.
"Those fools." one of the best line deliveries ever.
I agree, the line I remembered most from this gem !
12:02 "I'm not exactly sure Suzanna, the working class mind is strange and unpredictable." LOL Seems like a classic Conan line.
Adam West has to be one of the most underrated comic actors of all time. Wish there were more episodes.
Possibly the most brilliant 22-1/2 minutes of comedic television, ever.
RIP Adam West.
Has he been gone 7 years! I thought it was like 3.
Adam West has a voice like crisp dew on freshly cut grass at 6:30AM.
This show's AW's comic chops. This role was made for him. Kind of an early precursor to arrested development and such. This was fucking hilarious writing! Adam West is /perfect/ for this character and this comedy. Fucking genius... man, I want more so badly.
How'd you get beat up Mr. Lookwell? I'm not exactly sure Suzanne, the working class mind is strange and unpredictable.
It's funny because you can see Conan O'Brien's comedy style all through Lookwell. Conan himself could play this part and it would fit perfectly
Conans comedy style is to be unfunny. WELL DONE AGAIN CONMAN
This should have millions of views. Unlike many in Hollywood, Adam never took himself too seriously. The word needs more people like Adam West.
He did seem to embrace it, didn't he?
"You don't waste time, Jason - Time wastes you."
I hope Conan and Rob smigel are looking at "only murders in the building" and recognising that it took so much from this. It's excellent
I’ve never seen it but I just looked up OMITB and man, did they ever rip this off! 😂
"Hi there, the sidewalk is my pillow."
Adam West is so underrated as an actor!
His deadpan delivery is like no other!
"Tell him I'm Dash Carlisle, world-renowned auto racer"
Jon Aschalew Music Sounds like something Roger would say on American Dad.
KUDO'S to whoever posted this, I can watch on a loop all day long. This belongs in the TV Hall of Fame. Love Live Adam West!!!
you r so right. never gets unfunny
this is so conan!
this was ahead of its time apparently. this would probably get picked up today
yeah what a shame really. I would love to have this go 5 seasons on netflix.
You don't know what "ahead of its time" means.
@@Zodroo_Tint well I do now that it's 7 years later :)
"...used to play detective...mind cant help but make deductions...."
Hilarious! This would totally have a place on Adult Swim if it were made today. Ahead of its time, I guess...
Totally agree. I'm surprised there hasn't been a concerted effort by them to re-imagine it. Of course, NBC no doubt still owns the rights and will sit on it or only sell for over market-value just to be assholes. It's what they do, and they do it well.

I love how he eats at the table at the restaurant right next to his old headshoot
I love the way Adam West plays this so straight like in a ZAZ movie.
Conan and West could keep doing this in small parts as a serial on his show or Netflix.
Da H :(
Stern's interview of Conan was awesome. Conan and Stern are masters of their craft!
Love how his antiquated disguises are all clearly from a costume shop.
Surprisingly good. Loved the hobo outfit. Too bad they didn't make a few more episodes
This is easily the best of the "Brilliant But Cancelled" pilots. I genuinely don't understand why Lookwell wasn't picked up. I'd happily watch a bunch of these!
Too ahead of its time. The show might’ve worked as a cartoon. Either way it was super funny.
Holy shit, Adam West nails that performance to the fucking wall. I had no idea he was this funny.
u never watched Batman hes funny in it
What do you know Adam west from if you didn’t know he was funny? Lol
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this.
Same here. This is comedy gold. Every scene is brilliant! It is so unfortunate this show didn't make it past pilot. Adam West is simply perfectly cast here.
"Glad to see you catch up with the rest of us, Jason."
"He's Dash Carlisle."
"No you're not! You're not on the list and there is no such person!"
I would totally watch this show!...What am I saying...I just DID watch this show!
I would totally watch the entire series is what you're saying. Me too!
First of all...how dare you correct my attempt at You Tube Video Commentary Humor(and Yes, that's a thing...I know because I just made it up:) And B, I love all of your dad's albums!:) Have a great day!:)
who thinks that bryan cranston can play adam west in his biopic? I swear I can hear Hal somewhere here
R.I.P Adam West.
This may just be the funniest 22 minutes I've seen in a long time.

HAHAHA!
This was a great comedy nugget to stumble upon today! RIP Adam, you will be missed.
"Good evening! I live in the streets!" Ba ha ha ha!! 17:40
+johnnytastetest Happy to be indoors. The sidewalk is my pillow.
Homeless, coming through. I eat garbage!
This is great. (The uncut script can be read in Judd Apatow's humor anthology "I Found This Funny.") Loved this. Thanks Howard Stern for mentioning it - Had no idea it existed and I love Conan and Smigel!
"I don't think you understand officer but I used to play detective on TV" this line had me cracking up.
Jack Black sent me here :)

Have you seen Heat Vision and Jack, then?
A list of Batman actors sent me here.
A list of Batman actors sent me here.
Haven't watched this in a couple years and it's honestly funnier than ever!
I've never heard of this; it's so good. Thanks Howard!
good, hilarious stuff. can't believe it's been up for 13 years
This is the best thing I have ever seen in my life and I am grateful to have discovered it.
i heard about this on The Howard Stern Show and damn am I'm happy to have watched this - brilliant show all around!
RIP Mr. West.
Adam West!!!!!!!!! Dang, was he ever a great comedic actor. And Smigel and O'Brien. . . brilliant.

Wow that was great. Very funny. The 90's version of Psych.
R.I.P. Adam West. This was my favourite performance of yours! It's quite close to Mayor West, but it's funnier as Lookwell thinks he's in on the joke as opposed to the Mayor. And thanks also Adam for your Batman work!
Just read the script in Judd Appatow's collection. Freaking brilliant fun! Thanks for posting!
"The working class mind is strange and unpredictable". 12:15
This show was ahead of its time! Hilarious.
@Mondonitis If you compare 280k views to other one-time half hour shows, it is actually amazing! I do thank you for posting this!
I have been waiting SO MANY YEARS to finally see this... thank you SO MUCH for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, this has been up for 5 years and it only has 280k views. PEOPLE, GET THE WORD OUT.
Brilliant! I suspect this was too hip for the room when it was done back in the '90's. Love you, Adam West!
10 years since upload... First time i've seen double digits on youtube upload dates
RIP Adam West! This will always be my favorite thing he ever did... and I LOVE Batman!
Brilliant. WAY ahead of it's time. Very funny. A pity no one picked it up.
Greatest pilot ever made.
Howard stern brought me here....How did I miss this? This had me rolling on the floor OMG
One of the funniest unsold pilots I've ever seen. R.I.P. Adam
the volume is ridiculously loud compared to many other youtube videos, scared the shit out of me haha
just heard of this, picked up from wikipedia entry on Conan. I can see why it wasn't picked up but it is kind of a cute cult item. It strikes me as "police squad meets sledgehammer meets A team"
RIP Adam West, I loved his sense of humor, he was awesome in this show
RIP Adam West. i will be rewatching this in your memory
OMG!! How was this NOT picked up?? I was LOL through the whole show! Hilarious! Better than some of the garbage on TV today!! THANK YOU for posting this!!
This could've been one of the greatest comedy series of all time.
Wow, this show was ahead of its time! This would be a great show today!
Amazing to hear Conan O'Brien's voice through Adam West. This is so good.
How come this isn't on dvd already??? This is one of the funniest shows on tv at that time and still is.Adam, you're the best there is..Couldn't they play this on SPIKETV or something???
Conan is so brilliant!!
I couldn't find him
Thank you Mondonitis. Adam West was very funny and delivered a great performance as Ty Lookwell.
The young man playing Lookwell's assistant/student is now one of the most accomplished directors of all time with 14 Academy Award nominations for only a handful of films (he also played the piano player in Stanely Kubrick's Eye's Wide Shut).
Adam west WOULD do the Batman voice on the playground to help a scared kid on top of a slide go down
I believe this deeply in my heart
RIP
As a repeat poster I insist that this is the best comedy production of all time (along with...)
2:30 "Alberti" is posed as if he is handcuffed and when Ty turns up he relaxes.
Shit, maybe this is TOO good?
I want more!!
Anyone here for Conan O'Brien?
RIP Adam West, this is one of the funniest shows that never was
Just so you know, I tell everyone I can about this show. I have it on DVD and show it to everyone.

That's some darn fine acting Mr. West!
Simpsons DVD commentary on Mr Plow brought me here...
Me too.
R.I.P. Mr. West. Thanks for all of the laughs.
Man, I've been looking for a copy of this for years - youtube, and more particularly, Mondoitis is awesome.
Remember watching this on TV with my Grandpa and we both thought it was hilarious. Thought it was a new series and it never came on again. Always wondered what happened to it. Didn't have internet to let us know it was just a pilot that wasn't picked up. For some reason I thought there were two or three of them though. "Lookwell. Those cars are imports..." I was on the floor!
That was great--heard a commentary with Seth Mcfarlane talking about this show; glad I checked it out!
OH DEAR GOD! HERE IT IS! IN IT'S ENTIRETY! BLESS YOU!
I've been hearing about this for years. Brilliant!
I saw Adam West yesterday in Philly at a Q&A and he told us all about this. He said it was his favorite pilot that he made and that he was very upset when it was picked up for a season.
