I think what helped that family was good old fashioned faith; usually meant in theological terms, but, in this case, it was the unwavering confidence in the Dad (and brother). But, this was no "leap of faith," or "blind faith," rather this is confidence built on experience, and a thousand other times when that confidence was confirmed to be based on something solid. (yeah, any half-decent preacher could squeeze out a sermon from that). Great story! Good job, Dad!

"Right Attitude" is kind of loaded...it smacks of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps, stiff upper lip" of the rabid right. Stoic persistence might be a better phrase...
Could you imagine the torture of leaving your two daughters alone in the wilderness for over thirteen days? I don't think I could act or think rationally enough to make the right decisions.

Just checked on sinking of "West 1" and it's much more complicated and scammier story than told here. It was two 14-man liferafts (plenty of water and provisions for 7 people) and 14-foot aluminium skip (!) that mate used to navigate by himself to safety using improvised sales and sextant. Crew was of scratch type(nobody knew each other), 8 people total, on the liferaft with captain there were also 2 other - owner of the boat, who was convicted for killing and dismembering his wife in Switzerland after he siphoned millions from her; and his girlfriend. Owner was directly involved in an incident that lead to sinking, and he also overpriced the boat probably for insurance fraud. Captains body was buried at sea so no body to confirm the story of "giving up". Water on raft with cap. ended on the day of a rescue, while on the other raft there was plenty left for a week or two and they also collected rainwater and fished. Survivors and widow sued the owners company and settled out of court. So yeah, not as clean cut as they wanted you to believe.
The question for life is not ' Can I do it, or can't I do it?' but 'HOW can I do it?' or 'Now what do I need to do?' And: 'Do what you can, as opposed to what you can't. Applies to all areas of your life.

It is an awesome exclusive guide for Learning how to survive following a crisis without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my friend Sam got amazing results with it.
Dropping those girls off with only six miles to Rose Inlet. Poor decision from the alpha male that makes all the decisions. They should have pushed on together as a family, even if it meant a few more days of gruelling effort. Then, taking another twelve days to make it back is ridiculous. The father and son should have been attempting a return journey within 48 hours, max. Not lounging around for another 11..12 days to rest and recupurate. Ray should run a survival course simulating that disaster and showing us how it should be done. And let's be clear on our motto: "We don't leave our people behind".

What would have happened if the tube didn't lead to safety? There was no way for the rats to know. Also, in emergencies they tell you to stay put and wait for help if you can. This contradicts what allowed the rats to survive. I have heard other stories like this too, such as seat belts causing people to get killed when w/out them they'd have lived.
You are comparing apples and oranges. The reason they say to stay put, is because there will probably be a s&r team coming for people, so staying put will help the rescue. For a rat, they are safe in the wild, they can find food and live. Getting out of the chamber means a chance to find food and shelter for them. They operate as if there is no possibliity of outside help, unlike people.

Google SPOT satellite beacon if you do any sort of travel that can be in remote locations it is your responsibly to get one and maintain it. We have AAA for our cars I know if we simply loose the keys the car will have to be towed to a dealership that could be hundreds of miles depending on where you are. Form good habits I always leave the home with a 44 oz cup of something that not only saves $ but it could save your life. We should carry our BOB where ever we go.

You could design a situation where the rats leave and die too... so they would be penalized for the same behavior. The rats don't know that their decision is beneficial.. it's just dumb luck.

8:30 the plane crash victims were drowned it does not mean they could get their seatbelt loose? They could have had a broken hand wrist or were trapped in their seat some other way. You conclusion is not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. The people in the wrong were the hijackers don't make their deaths out to be the result of improper action. A lot more study would have had to have been made to say for sure what happened. They could have lost consciousness from bleeding and drowned.
