I love his style. No self-created drama, just matter-of-fact.

I grew up in northen Sweden. I like that Ray uses the survival techniques that we learn in school (and offcourse more advance things too that we dident learn) and pass this knowledge on. Sure he has a lot of tools, fishing bait, cabbins etc but this is more educational. If you compare it to when Bear Grylls did he´s show: Walking around throwing away hes winter cap in minus 30 loosing heat, trying to cross the ice at a flowing river, not using pine tree (wich is in abundance) to build your shelter and-build signal fire etc. Its entertaining and I like Bear, but its good to see the conventional way to do things. And its not like Bear diden´t cheat too. Going trough the ice and right afterwards find a cabbin, with skiis. Atleast Ray built hes own snowshoes. Respect.

Interesting. I recalled reading as a kid some history textbook reference that early 17th century explorers and fur traders in Canada learned from the Indians how to brew a pine-needle tea that was rich in Vitamin C to ward off scurvy during the Winter months but the reference did not say WHICH pine needles nor that some were toxic.

Think about he's just showing some survival techniques. Survival scenarios DO happen every now and then. I served as an Artic Army Ranger (done ie. the survival training mentioned in this video) in Sweden and it was fairly common to be sent out on S&R missions for tourists that had no real clue about how extreme the weather conditions can be in artic alpine terrain. Weather can change from sunny to snow storm in just a few minutes.
If you go hiking, it is by all means possible to end up in a survival situation. Ie. northern Sweden is very sparsely populated. It can take days to reach a populated area, if you manage to get there that is (map+compass and know how to use it. BUT the high altitude mountain areas can be extremely hard to orient oneself in. There are no obvious spots to find and compare with on a map, it's just bare mountains all over. Even an expert will find it very hard, then you have to rely on pure bearing and move for a large road etc.). Oh, and forget about mobile phones. It's stupid to rely on that you will have any kind of coverage far out in the wild. Bring it, but don't expect it to work.
About pine needles...all pine needles are toxic to some degree. But there's no real danger at all drinking pine needle tea. "Normal" pinetrees are without a doubt no threat what so ever. Another very simple thing to get nourishment from is cooking beard lichen (don't eat it raw = you will get sick. It must be prepared, won't bother about telling how since there are several ways). Taste and texture is horrible, but that doesn't matter in a survival situation.

"Extreme survival" is loosely over used these days. When you have a cabin with wood stove and have completely geared-up kits, with snowmobiles etc. You are not surviving. You are having good vacations.

the fishing part is pretty useless as survival advice. you absolutely won't just find an abandoned cabin with an auger and hook in it,
anyone who has an auger, a metal hook, and bait, probably isnt in a life or death situation. getting through the ice is the hardest part.

The only thing wrong with this video is wasting time cutting the piece of paper with the axe. it is a worthless test because just about any sharp enough bit of steel will cut paper. test it on something that is a real test like a small tree.

Jan Davies Exactly, that is why he should have to show it how it is, not act in front of a camera for 1hr showing how it isn't. Why do they spend half the show talking about a story that has no educational information. Lame show, I could learn 100x the information in the same time reading guidelines.
