I am definitely going to do this, and plan to do both sides of my doghouse, but I don't want to put carpet back on it. I have searched high and low for a removable and machine washable cover for the doghouse, but no luck. My family had a Class C in the seventies and my dad bought such a thing for it, but they don't seem to exist now. If any of have made one, I will pay you to make another one :)
You don't have to do both sides of the dog house to make that baby quiet, but you can I guess if you want to. As far as a cover over the top instead of carpet you could probably have one made at an upholstery shop. I've never seen one that you could buy off the shelf. thx for watching

Either or. I sprayed it all over under the engine, tranny, axles everything. Then came back and wiped it down initially with a lot of paper towels. Then came back a 2nd time when most of the grit and grime was gone and did it again with rags. If you spray it on, let it set and then wipe it off with rags, but be sure you wear some type of eye protection. Laying under the coach and spraying anything...it's easy for that stuff to get into your eyes.

Being a new class a owner and never owned an rv of any kind your educational videos are by far the best out there. My wife is getting jealous since Iam spending a lot of time watching all your videos. Just one thing I think you left out on the installing insulation on the dog house. That would be applying seal conditioner to that seal around the base of the dog house while you have it accessible. Thanks again for teaching me stuff I didn't know any thing about.

Can I do a double layer of the sound proofing. I was thinking that I would install so that the second layer would overlap the seams on the first layer.
Have you ever made a cover for a generator? An external generator? To cut the sound down? How would you make a folding one that could be stored while driving?
OK, I got 9 15"x20" sheets in my kit. It looks like I am supposed to double it up! I used all but one sheet, it covers red everything twice. Noe I need to make the hole for the allen wrench fasten it down nd we re done!
In my case, the black metal brackets are not attached securely to the fiberglass. They won't come off, but they wiggle. Is this normal? It isn't clear what kind of fastener they are attached with. I would have to pull the carpet to see the other side (which is a significant escalation of the project. I presume you did not take those bracket off to replace the soundproofing.
I bought this kit and am installing it today. Came back today to review your instructions. It would be nice if you told us what size Allen wrench or did I miss it? Update... I found that I need a 5/16th Allen wrench. Looking forward to hearing my wife’s comments and instructions as we roll down the road!
Ya I didn't mention the allen wrench size because with different manufacturers it can vary some. So I just let it up to each individual to find the right size in their allen wrench set.
Excellent easy project video! Wish we had done that on our 2014 Itasca when we drove it to AK! That screaming V-10 5 speed liked to have driven us nuts going over the mountains! On our newer 2016 F53 we have the 6 speed with much lower RPMs and its significantly quieter and a more enjoyable ride- but I may still do this mod on a rainy day just to see if I can get a few lower dB's out of her!! Will order through your link if i do it as its an easy mod for a pretty low price with what may be a big improvement. Many thanks !

I pulled the dog house and saw that there is some level of very very thin and loose almost like aluminum foil in thickness (adhesive failing) material from the Winnebago factory applied to the fiberglass. Not sure whether to attempt to re-glue the existing and add this stuff or remove the old material and install the new. Will figure it out Thursday when the new material arrives. Hope your travels are progressing safely and well.
@@americanrascal53 Hey Joe, Remove all that factory thin stuff as much as possible. You want this new adhesive to have a clean, new hard surface as much as possible to adhere to. Removing the factory stuff doesn't have to be perfect, so don't be anal about it. But just try to remove as much as possible and then install new stuff as I explained. You'll be fine. It'll make a big difference.

How do you go about keeping your so clean? Any tricks of the trade? We did the doghouse on our Class A gasser about 4 months ago. We added not only sound proofing but also a additional heat shield. Made a big difference. As always thanks for the vids Martin
No tricks here just patience a little elbow grease. A bucket or warm soapy water with Dove soap, several rags, a screw driver to get into tight places. Usually do this once a year in the winter. Also gives me a chance to look everything over and make sure all is good under there.
Martin, One thing I didn’t hear in this video. Was there any insulation under the dog house before you put your sound deadening layer down? Did you take it out or just cover over it. I just bought a 2022 Forest River FR3 and I’ve already noticed the loud engine noise. I just wonder if I should remove the original insulation first or just layer it over the insulation. Your videos have been a huge help to me, thanks and please keep them coming.
Mine had no prior insulation. Remove what you have now, then wipe it down with some acetone to etch and clean the surface. Then apply my new insulation and don't forget to use the roller to press it down. This activates the adhesive. www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet

James, there's just so many things to consider when looking for a coach. Gas or a DP. Keep researching and refining what exactly it is what you need and the answer will come. Knowledge is power.
Well doing this to the dog house will certainly help. But we also have thick vinyl colorized, matching mats on the both drivers and passenger side floor areas that we bought at HD. We've never had any heat issues under our feet.
What year is this RV you are working on? Our 2017 Winnie has about a half dozen screws around the doghouse flange, going straight down into the floor. If they have revised the attachment, do you know if they have started adding deadening material too?

Got a question for you when attaching water while flushing the black water tank water doesn't go in, is there a check valve or something. 2005 Monaco Monarch Ford F53
Hey George, Back flush Spray nozzles are plastic with tiny holes drilled in them Holes get plugged up from minerals in water supply and/or stuff if tank is filled to FULL The most likely culprit is the spray nozzle(s) itself, especially in a coach of your age. On the inside of the tank, I would expect to see a brass device, maybe ½" x 1", or so, with several very tiny holes drilled into the sides and the end of it. HARD WATER definitely is a big enemy to those small holes This is why I so highly recommend having a water softener that delivers softened water throughout the coach including your when you flush the toilet. There are so many bad things that can happen when you don’t use a water softener. The most likely culprit is the spray nozzle(s) itself. On the inside of the tank, I would expect to see a brass device, maybe ½" x 1", or so, with several very tiny holes drilled into the sides and the end of it. Hard water definitely is a big enemy to those small holes Also, there are some people that flush out both black and grey water tanks with high pressure water. The problems occur when folks think they are conserving water by putting small amounts in the tank. What happens is that the solids build up a pyramid and solidifies. It can also plug up the flush head. The best thing to do is get it flushed with high pressure and then use plenty of water with each flush. I always start with 15% in the tank and go from there. The black tank is not the place to save water. To unclog those tiny holes you could try some CLR or white vinegar and force it onto that flush valve where those tiny holes are and then let it sit for a few hours to try to break up that hard water mineral build up. Then try flushing it out high pressure and see if that clears it up. If that works, then install water softener to prevent this and other bad things don’t happen throughout the rest of your coach in the future. I have produced several video’s on this with links to purchase the right equipment. If you use FaceBook (FB) I can post an image diagram that will show you how this back flush valve works and give you a link to view it. Let me know if you use FB

@@RVstreet Thank you for the reply, I have a Newmar with the new V8 the doghouse sits directly on top of the engine it is pretty close, this product says not to use in an engine compartment but it also says it can be used under a hood so its a bit confusing. Will the heat be too much for the product ? I don't want to have a fire or do something stupid. Any more specifics would be helpful.
@@rickgw1275 The heat isn't going to be a problem, and it's not going to start a fire. This product isn't going to start a fire. It's foil sound deadening material. If noise is a problem in these new units I'd do it anyways. For a little more assurance, after the install just check it after a few hundred miles. Personally I wouldn't worry about it, and I think you be just fine.
Not sure. The material that I showed in the vid that we used soundproofed just fine. Joanie & I talk normal like we're in the car. But of course if you're climbing big mountains the engine is going to roar but there's nothing you can do about that. But under normal conditions our coach is quiet as can be.
Martin, we have a 2012 Tioga Ranger 25G. Our doghouse is more like an engine cover. I pulled it off and checked the underside. It looks like it already has a pretty thick pad so I’m hesitating striping it down and installing new padding. I would love to have your opinion. Steve
Ya, the "doghouse" I showed could also be called an engine cover too. If you're not experiencing loud noise with your factory padding now, I'd just leave it alone. But usually factory sound/heat deafening material doesn't work very well and is inadequate. If it is inadequate, I don't know what type of material you currently have on there now and whether or not you could go over it with another layer and get good adhesion. Our dog house didn't have any from the factory so that wasn't a problem for me. If you'd like to replace it, just peel up a little corner and see how it's held on. If it's not glued on, you could easily remove the old, clean that area good with Acetone and apply the new like I showed and you'd be assured of good adhesion.
@@RVstreet Thanks for the response. Martin. Looks like Fleetwood did a pretty good job with both thickness and adhesive. I think I will leave it alone for now. Sound level could be better in the cab, but I don't think it's worth changing out yet.
Martin-I have my dog house off to do exactly what you showed here. BUT HOW DID YOU GET YOUR MOTOR SO CLEAN? Mine is all dusty, I really want to clean it but afraid to get the inside a my coach filthy.
I drape an old sheet over the engine bay and blow it out with my air compressor by reaching under the sheet to get all the big surface stuff......THEN.........yep good ol' damp rags and elbow grease and wipe everything down by hand and sometimes using a flat head screw driver with the rag to get into tight places. While I'm doing that I'm looking and inspecting everything under there to make sure all is good. One time I was doing this engine cleaning, I found a heater hose that rounded a corner and was rubbing on some metal and had chaffed 1/2 way thru. A disaster waiting to happen. I changed out the hose and put some split loom on it to prevent further chaffing.

@@RVstreet After I did this Dog House noise fix. Here is what happened. I tell the wife "You gotta come out here and check this out! " We were just sitting in the drive way. Wife comes out and crawls into co pilot looks at me and says "Start it up!' I said "Baby it is running!" she says "No its not, OMG yes it is! OMG! Are you kidding me? Wow that made a HUGE difference! I cant believe it!" this works! You can hear its running but I think she was not paying attention, and was just so used to how loud it used to be it fooled her.

Yeah it's an easy DYI job and not only takes care of and excess noise but blocks heat as well.

My Winnebago had a hole in the carpet for the latch and the latch tool is stored in the coaches paper work folder.

Martin, One thing I didn’t hear in this video. Was there any insulation under the dog house before you put your sound deadening layer down? Did you take it out or just cover over it. I just bought a 2022 Forest River FR3 and I’ve already noticed the loud engine noise. I just wonder if I should remove the original insulation first or just layer it over the insulation. Your videos have been a huge help to me, thanks and please keep them coming.
Mine had no prior insulation. Remove what you have now, then wipe it down with some acetone to etch and clean the surface. Then apply my new insulation and don't forget to use the roller to press it down. This activates the adhesive.

James, there's just so many things to consider when looking for a coach. Gas or a DP. Keep researching and refining what exactly it is what you need and the answer will come. Knowledge is power.
Great tip! I think I might do this. Any ideas for lowering the heat on the driver's floor? I currently just have a rug folded up to sit there.
Well doing this to the dog house will certainly help. But we also have thick vinyl colorized, matching mats on the both drivers and passenger side floor areas that we bought at HD. We've never had any heat issues under our feet.
@@RVstreet I used the same material for my flooring (driver and passenger)as I did the dog house for sound and heat.
What year is this RV you are working on? Our 2017 Winnie has about a half dozen screws around the doghouse flange, going straight down into the floor. If they have revised the attachment, do you know if they have started adding deadening material too?

No I don't think so. Perhaps go to a couple diesel truck forums and poke around and see if others have found a solution to quiet it down some.

Back flush Spray nozzles are plastic with tiny holes drilled in them
Holes get plugged up from minerals in water supply and/or stuff if tank is filled to FULL
The most likely culprit is the spray nozzle(s) itself, especially in a coach of your age. On the inside of the tank, I would expect to see a brass device, maybe ½" x 1", or so, with several very tiny holes drilled into the sides and the end of it. HARD WATER definitely is a big enemy to those small holes
This is why I so highly recommend having a water softener that delivers softened water throughout the coach including your when you flush the toilet. There are so many bad things that can happen when you don’t use a water softener.

Also, there are some people that flush out both black and grey water tanks with high pressure water. The problems occur when folks think they are conserving water by putting small amounts in the tank. What happens is that the solids build up a pyramid and solidifies. It can also plug up the flush head. The best thing to do is get it flushed with high pressure and then use plenty of water with each flush. I always start with 15% in the tank and go from there. The black tank is not the place to save water.
To unclog those tiny holes you could try some CLR or white vinegar and force it onto that flush valve where those tiny holes are and then let it sit for a few hours to try to break up that hard water mineral build up. Then try flushing it out high pressure and see if that clears it up. If that works, then install water softener to prevent this and other bad things don’t happen throughout the rest of your coach in the future. I have produced several video’s on this with links to purchase the right equipment.

are there any warranty issues related to this mod ? I know engine is covered longer than box, so hopefully Ford/ Chevy wont use that as an excuse to deny a claim. Otherwise, great advice

Just curious if you happened to do a dB test before and after? If not, would you say it helped somewhat or helped significantly with cab noise?
Didn't do a before/after db test, but I can tell you from experience it was a world of difference. Every gas coach owner should do this.

@@RVstreet Thank you for the reply, I have a Newmar with the new V8 the doghouse sits directly on top of the engine it is pretty close, this product says not to use in an engine compartment but it also says it can be used under a hood so its a bit confusing. Will the heat be too much for the product ? I don't want to have a fire or do something stupid. Any more specifics would be helpful.
@@rickgw1275 The heat isn't going to be a problem, and it's not going to start a fire. This product isn't going to start a fire. It's foil sound deadening material. If noise is a problem in these new units I'd do it anyways. For a little more assurance, after the install just check it after a few hundred miles. Personally I wouldn't worry about it, and I think you be just fine.
Well, I did that! but I think that more than the engine cover needs to be soundproofed! So how do I do that?!
Not sure. The material that I showed in the vid that we used soundproofed just fine. Joanie & I talk normal like we're in the car. But of course if you're climbing big mountains the engine is going to roar but there's nothing you can do about that. But under normal conditions our coach is quiet as can be.

Martin, we have a 2012 Tioga Ranger 25G. Our doghouse is more like an engine cover. I pulled it off and checked the underside. It looks like it already has a pretty thick pad so I’m hesitating striping it down and installing new padding. I would love to have your opinion. Steve
Ya, the "doghouse" I showed could also be called an engine cover too. If you're not experiencing loud noise with your factory padding now, I'd just leave it alone. But usually factory sound/heat deafening material doesn't work very well and is inadequate. If it is inadequate, I don't know what type of material you currently have on there now and whether or not you could go over it with another layer and get good adhesion. Our dog house didn't have any from the factory so that wasn't a problem for me. If you'd like to replace it, just peel up a little corner and see how it's held on. If it's not glued on, you could easily remove the old, clean that area good with Acetone and apply the new like I showed and you'd be assured of good adhesion.
@@RVstreet Thanks for the response. Martin. Looks like Fleetwood did a pretty good job with both thickness and adhesive. I think I will leave it alone for now. Sound level could be better in the cab, but I don't think it's worth changing out yet.

Martin-I have my dog house off to do exactly what you showed here. BUT HOW DID YOU GET YOUR MOTOR SO CLEAN? Mine is all dusty, I really want to clean it but afraid to get the inside a my coach filthy.
I drape an old sheet over the engine bay and blow it out with my air compressor by reaching under the sheet to get all the big surface stuff......THEN.........yep good ol' damp rags and elbow grease and wipe everything down by hand and sometimes using a flat head screw driver with the rag to get into tight places. While I'm doing that I'm looking and inspecting everything under there to make sure all is good. One time I was doing this engine cleaning, I found a heater hose that rounded a corner and was rubbing on some metal and had chaffed 1/2 way thru. A disaster waiting to happen. I changed out the hose and put some split loom on it to prevent further chaffing.

@@RVstreet After I did this Dog House noise fix. Here is what happened. I tell the wife "You gotta come out here and check this out! " We were just sitting in the drive way. Wife comes out and crawls into co pilot looks at me and says "Start it up!' I said "Baby it is running!" she says "No its not, OMG yes it is! OMG! Are you kidding me? Wow that made a HUGE difference! I cant believe it!" this works! You can hear its running but I think she was not paying attention, and was just so used to how loud it used to be it fooled her.

I wish more RVer's would take what I show more seriously and follow thru with them....for their sake not mine. It would make their RV life so much better. Well I have no experience with that product, but the stuff we used not only works fantastic but did you see in the video how well it has adhered over the last 4 years and 10's of thousands of miles. I mean....that in itself is amazing. That stuff is never coming off.
