A superb performance comparable to Horowitz. This brilliant young man is supremely gifted. His Brahms D minor is second to none.

Thank you for such a flattering review. Special thanks for Brahms as now this is one of my favorite authors...As well as Rachmaninoff.

You are fortunate to have a name that's easy to remember. I have seen superb young pianists go nowhere because their name was very difficult to remember. Please consider this advice from a very old person (81) who has spent his life studying music; Jorge Bolet used to tell his students to listen carefully to the masters, and see if they can identify the very things that make the performance immortal. Also Claudio Arrau used to say that a pianist should always be true to himself. If the critics like it, fine but if not, so be it. I say, when you play a Concerto by Rachmaninoff, listen carefully to his recordings. Most pianists don't do this and there are scores of 2nd rate performances of his music. You were born with a great gift, the gift of music.

Dear Roman: There are 2 books I believe you would really like: "Horowitz a biography" by Glenn Plaskin and "Rachmaninoff's Recollections" by Oskar von Risemann. The latter has many letters Rachmaninoff wrote to musicologist Josef Yasser explaining how his music should be played. Rachmaninoff loved the way Horowitz played his 3rd Concerto, and a few years before his death, went to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl to hear Volodya play it. After the performance, Rachmaninoff who had been sitting way in the back row so as not to attract attention, casually walked down the aisle, up onto the stage, and taking Horowitz by the hand, told the audience: "This is the way I have always dreamed that my Concerto should be played, but I never expected to hear it that way on earth" the audience of 23,000 then rose and paid homage to both men. Horowitz later called this "the greatest moment of my life". This is found at page 213 of the Plaskin biography. Horowitz also cautioned his students: "if you practice 10 hours a day, when it is time to give a concert, you will sound like you are still practicing". I will send you an e mail with a beautiful color picture of Rachmaninoff at 65.
