I started basic obedience training last May and have watched seminars and dozens of trainers and training methods, and let me tell you this man right here is my favorite! He doesn't use any harsh punishments nor use just treats, he uses natural corrections for dogs to understand! I started using his no pull methods with my aussie ( who pulls 100%) and it was my first time I was able to walk her on just her collar. Now hoping to use his methods for her resource guarding against my other dogs.. truly a revelation right here.
I used to do this with my previous horse from the moment I met him and the result was indeed that he was always able to walk off leash very neatly. He also always stopped before every open door, even when getting him off leash from the pasture, so this method works great!
You guys are on here because you want good dogs or possibly you enjoy this channel. Yup, Joel. I am here for both. I genuinely enjoy your channel. You're just such a unique trainer. ❤
This works! I have a labrador and have tried all sorts of things but this worked pretty much instantly and now every walk is so pleasant. He watches my every step!
I will watch every video, no matter how repetitive. This man is the brightest gem in the RUclips dog training universe. I am filming my first edited video and totally mention this very method and where I learned it. Nothing is better for overall obedience than this. It sharpened up every other aspect of my training. Between this and the Gentle Leader, dogs are far better off.
Absolutely agree. I’ve been implementing Joel’s loose leash method, incredible improvement. I have the same type of dog that he showed in one earlier upload (it’s was a GSD) forward moving, starts to go if he sees something - cannot help it as he’s a Kelpie. Got a gentle leader after watching that upload. Unbelievable. After a week my girls are walking him. Insane. Occasionally even with the gentle leader he’ll almost half trot diagonally which I had to work on, kinda like side on like a thoroughbred about to race. But no pulling ect. Now that’s even gone too.
He has us trained to watch his videos! LOL! Seriously, his videos have changed my life and that of my dog. She’s not a beast like some of these dogs but our walks are now loose leash and I walk with a regular gait and she is with me. The stage is set at the door and there is no more pulling, no dog reactivity, no cutting in front of me. I didn’t use treats just a few well timed corrections (telling her what’s up!😉). I see other dog walkers being pulled and walked by their dog and I recognize my old self in them. Joel is the real deal but you have to be willing to set door/leash boundaries. Two thumbs aloft!
I agree!! I watch Joel EVERYDAY! This man is my FAVORITE trainer. He’s not “show biz” like Cesar….I don’t need/like the backstory/family drama of Cesar….I want a demonstration of how I should train my dogs….I love this guys methods!!!
Training this behaviour hasn’t just helped my dog it’s helped me too. It’s helped me to learn that I can have higher expectations and I can set some boundaries. Thankyou Joel.
This training is exactly what I applied to my 90 lbs lab mix and the result is almost instant! I came across Joel’s channel about 5mos ago and it was life changing! One day I accidentally left the door wide open and to get something in the car and my dog was just sitting there by the door waiting, I was so shocked it worked! Now he’s 100% trained when it comes to any doors including the garage door, I don’t have to worry about him flying out at all! Amazing stuff!!!
The ONLY method that has pretty much changed my Kelpies reactivity. I’ve owned pittbull, Jack Russell, cared for many other dogs. This boy When I got him, barely handled, never been in a house. Reactive to everything and anything that moved especially people. Had tiny success with other methods, Joel’s method has knocked it out of the park. My kids can actually walk him alone without me now, we are in control. Thanks for your help 🙏 Joel you have been a godsend
Beckman's loose leash method was a game changer for my dog and I!! I always tried Ceaser's short but relaxed method for both the dogs I've had but had almost no success. My current dog was better but still wanted to be ahead of me by half it's body length. Once I used a gentle leader and the stop, crouch, step to the side, and correct, my dog walks with me PERFECTLY and now I LOVE walking him daily even MORE!! Side note my dog hates to be corrected like that now. He checks in constantly and seems a little too worried when I stop to test him.
Great video! Thank you!! Couldn't agree more. My last shepherd would always fly out the door, it was so stressful. I insisted our 7 month old GSD learn this skill early on. It's a life changer. She learned it by 5 months and she's so good, and waits at the door even if open, will not leave the door without our invitation. It also helps sets the tone for a relaxed, enjoyable walk making good eye contact.
Your methods really does work. We had five dogs that would immediately run out the door every time we opened it, it was such a pain. But after applying your methods they are near perfect and rarely try to run out.
Wow...this one's a perfect example of the door method working beautifully! Love the "since when is there a cue to pull on the leash? With you, there should never be a cue." 👏👏
I started applying your method and it magically works. Before I tried tons of positive reinforcement that yes, helped in other contexts, but my dog was still pulling like crazy. This method lets the dog understand what you do NOT want to happen and it's incredibly important. Thank you!
Teaching our young cattle dog the wait command was a game changer for serious impulse control issues that would spiral up to craziness and niping. Use it in many different situations. It instantly calms her down and she focuses on me.
I love it man, using these videos to keep on my parents dog because they don't pay attention to her. Has already helped and impressed me a lot with how little time these drills take. Consistency people, even if everybody doesn't have it when you come around and you have it, it shows!!
My wife and I have a 16mo rottie female and our loose leash training while walking improved immensely when applying this. As soon as we opened up the garage door she would want to pull and run out but this worked out great. Thanks so much and always following your videos so we can continuously work on areas to improve.
I started training this with my extremely smart 10 week old miniature dachshund, Georgie, because he was pulling the leash CONSTANTLY and I couldn’t stand it. Even though he’s a puppy, I’m incredibly thankful for this video and glad I taught him this. It took only a day for him to completely change his attitude. It doesn’t matter big or small dogs, they MUST know who’s in charge. They need a leader.
I have a 5 month Bull terrier. She's awesome and It's fortunate she has a wonderful temperment. After watching this, your instructions are crystal clear and easy to follow. You and Victoria are my favourite. New sub. Thanks for making theses videos.
Totally agree; from fostering over 20 dogs these last couple of years i have found that if on day one (regardless if the dog is 9weeks old or 3 years old) you establish the simple rule that the dog has to listen/check-in with you it makes everyone's life a lot easier and sets your dog up for success. And don't use a harness, it makes it much harder to communicate with your dog.
You nailed it sir. I "have" this problem with all the rescued Rotties that I take it. It takes maybe three days and some reinforcement to get them to wait at an open door while looking out at the traffic going up and down on the side walk by the house. I use "out" and "in" commands along with hand signals with the goal being completely on hand signals for all behavioral commands.
Yes, impulse control. I preach this to my puppy adopters in fact just did a video on impulse control training in seven week old puppies. They gotta have it before they can be trained anything in my opinion. Impulse control, self control, gotta have it and you can start training it in very young puppies. Also, people act WAY too excited when they get ready to take the dog out for a walk.
Aussie and her mini schnauzer here. I discovered your lessons a few weeks back. So refreshing to hear you say not so many treats. None if possible. My girl sits and stays at the door until I release her, but then she charges out Will follow your advice and do your method. So much more control. Have already begun your loose lead method too. Getting better daily.
Brilliant - you allowing them to correct themselves in the end. I really like this. THe last big guy in this video is like mine - eager to jump out. GSDs respond well though, so look forward to trying this.
Joel... I thank you. Your leash correction, when a dog owner follows through and stays the course, helps establish a lifelong relationship with any dog. It has helped me and people have seen me do it as there dog pulls them down the block and then I can see them from a far picking it up and there dog changes imidiately. Thank you, and continue you with what you do and how you do it. I hope to one day take a drive to Ramona and show off what my Bernadoodle and I have achieved by simply tunning in.
I also surprise my dog often when walking, especially if he’s in front of me, and change direction to ensure he’s paying attention and changes direction with me. Because he’s always paying attention and knows to never pull, even my t year old son can walk my 165lbs Cane Corso. Makes everything so much easier.

That being said, the kids took a lot of training and retraining and he’s always trying to raise his rank above the kids and own them. My 8 year old struggles the most because he knows he can overpower him so he has to be the most contentious with his behavior and training. It’s not a dog that’s just a pet. Teaching my dog to walk out the door properly on the leash has literally saved my life! He is only 22 lbs, but he is strong and almost pulled me down the stairs in my apartment complex face first!
My latest challenge honestly is my own jelly legs, completely forgetting what I'm supposed to do when faced with a dog. I just got past 3 little dogs with my 2 mastiff/boxer cross. The dogs did SO good, but I need serious work 😫 💖
Joel, After watching and trying your techniques in at least 20 videos I have decided you are actually for real. As you know, there are plenty on youtube who are not. They'd like the money but don't deliver. While I am amazed that your techniques work I have began to depend on those as well as my own. I have a little different perspective as I was actually raised in a little or German Shepherds so I have some understanding of dogs. (Didn't understand people didn't eat kibble until I was at least 4 yrs old) I have also raised and trained two Aussies to be able to point my Aussie at a herd of deer and having him bring them all back to me. Thanks for your stuff.
Only problem with this trick at my house is the screen doors that close on their own! I trained a wait/stay at the door, and we use this method everywhere else. Full subscriber of your content, love the channel. I like positive reinforcement for most things, but your whole methodology really helps me correct bad behaviours in a way that's not cruel and the dog fully understands what's up
I wish I could find a trainer like you in OH. I like the trainer I am using but proper dog playing and behavior is what I need to work on and we haven't done that. You are seriously so good at what you do. I try and use your tactics every chance I get.
I like the video Joel! The only thing I do different is the verbal que. My “Okay” is always a release marker that says the dog is okay to go smell around or play, etc. Typically i would give a recall or other command before offering a correction for non-compliance.
I train tracking dogs for wounded game and I have a dog that is very reactive. I think this method could break a lot of the reactivity. I am usually complemented on how well my "hunting dogs" behave but this one is over the top.
I would love a bit of elaboration on using this method if I use a gentle leader. Is there anything in particular I should be aware of when correcting with the gentle leader?
Joel has a lot of videos for what you are asking. You may need to do some binge-watching. I love it when subscribers write that they don't even have a dog, have no intentions to get a dog, and anticipate Joel’s newest video every day. How, cool is that! ✨
apart from yourself, I have only ever seen Martin McKenna teach this, he explains it as the dog winning points for getting through the door before you, making him leader of the walk. Many of his methods are quite similar to yours, I think you would enjoy him, he ran away from home as a child to lived with the stray dogs and learned their 'language'
I first learned from the Dog Whisperer that the walks starts at the door, that the dog always follows you out, never othewise. Joel has refined this and framed it as "never leaving me" which is, I think, a very incisive way of referring to what is really going on there.
Joel has a great way of framing the same concepts in a concrete, actionable way. Cesar phrases things in such a way that it's easy to get into the wrong mindset and totally misinterpret what he says. There is no room for misinterpretation with Joel.
@@iris7484 Joel is certainly clear, and that's gold. Cesar was busy showing psychology: I don't think I ever misinterpeted him, myself. But Cesar was not doing training on the Dog Whisperer.
@@pmlm1571 I feel like I always understood what he was getting at, but the details of execution could get murky. I've seen people interpreting "alpha energy" in some seriously small-minded, non-alpha ways, to the detriment of the dog they're trying to work with. I like that Joel shows specifically how to act like how Milan wants people to act, without really bringing conceptual psychology into it (even though personally I really enjoy that aspect of the process!)
@@iris7484 Yes. Though you may be merging Cesar with someone else: he did not use the old "alpha" dog language, his frame of reference was not dominance/submission. It was confident energy, leadership and agreement to surrender to leadership.
@@pmlm1571 yeah you're probably right - this would have come from hearing people talk about "alpha" and Cesar in the same conversation and probably conflating the two.
I've gotten my dog pretty good at loose leash walking thanks to your methods and he pays way more attention to me on walks. The issues I'm having is that he always wanders in front but Is always paying attention. He never hit the end of the leash but is constantly in front but will stop if I stop and turn with me if I change direction. The real issue comes when we see another dog. He goes absolute ape shit and the leash pops don't mean shit even with the gentle leader on. I have a mini dachshund...
Might need something stronger than a gentle leader. I keep my dog in a 'heel' on my left side during walks. It works a dream in busy areas with the prong on, and helps with his reactivity which was really bad. He's a lab mix, about 39kilos. When he's done a good job, or it's calm or if we are just exploring, whenever I want to really I tell him to 'break' that is permission for him to break his heel and go sniff and be a dog. It does not at all mean pull me or stop paying attention. But it means he can stop and explore and go on either side of me etc. I've found this is easier to keep control of him with reactive dogs. Something to try. Just make sure that your dog understand the concept of 'heel' and 'break' before you start using them in real situations. Tom Davis does good tutorials on heel walking with the prong, look up his YT channel if you like, one of my favourite :) hope that helps.
@@havyn.michelle9882 Thanks for your thoughtful input. I've watched a lot of Tom's stuff. But the prong is standard with him, and I tried it one day and not only did it not phase my 70 lb. dog, it was awful to jerk on her that way. I favored Larry Krohn's channel after that, and found it very helpful for the solid recall my dog now has. But still needing an answer to the explosive aggression. The only thing I have actually found that helps is to put my dog down on her side and put a hold on her throat. She is calm but avoiding other dog when I let her up, and that's a relief. But way too much drama.
First thing I taught my dog when I got him using Cesar’s way. He never goes out when it’s open without permission. BUT, I’m sure if a dog was out there forget it.
My dog won’t go out the door without the ‘free’ command. He’s a Cane Corso, some ven when someone comes to the door and he’s barking and scaring the shit out of the person at the door, he still won’t cross it so I don’t need to hold him, put a leash on him, worry about biting, nothing.
Many external doors open inwards resulting in different movement, physical stance and positions of the handler and dog (compared to an outward opening door). Please can you demonstrate your doorway method with an inwardly opening external door and is there anything you would do differently? Thanks
Tai chi move! Gives you more stability. Not just a dog training video. 😂 I learned that move with my big crazy Berner. After getting pulled 50 times and face planting at least 1/2 dozen times you learn to plant your feet and shift your weight. 😝
Joel has puppy videos too. They really helped me with my pup. I can't remember what age he said. Start binge watching. He incorporates many trainings, body language explanations, etc., in each video. Start binge-watching his videos. ✨
To somewhat play the devil’s advocate, what do you think about Cesar Millan keeping the dog right at your side and not letting the dog go ahead of you such that you correct then.., as opposed to correcting if the pup leaves your side ?
how could this be done in a 5th wheel camper? our doors have steps that go down ~4ft immediately. I just want to be able to teach our 7mo Lab mix and do it safely
We have 4 dogs on our mini-farm and they have an electric fence with a 10 acre area which they never leave so we mostly just let them out on there on their own without leashes. We only leash walk them about once a week for fun. Is this method something we should use intermittently because one of the dogs is not good with leash walking?
My dog doesn’t fly out the door nor does he pull but when he’s sees people or dogs if they’re close will want to run to them! Will your method work for this?
1:50 you mention another trainer doing it your way...Brian Kilcommons. He wrote books on this stuff...you have videos. The videos help me translate what to do to my kids "faster". Something like the "POP" is difficult to comprehend until you do it correctly. Your form & technique 1) show it to where I can break it down, 2) instant gratification as the reaction from the dog is ... WThheee, & 3) helps legitimize to the naysayers who can't control their pets with only positive reinforcement and claim abuse. I'd like to see a video on collars & a focus on when harnesses (flat, martingale, easy/gentle leader, harnesses) would be appropriate. To me, its @ around 2-3 yrs. old depending on dog & training. Good foundation and dog should no longer pull & be a pretty good listener. BTW, my in-law's new 9 mo. old puppy got an introduction to me (they were out). He's a jumper & licker. They asked why he didn't jump on me when I came back the next day...as well as my family when I said "off". THANK YOU!

i have high drive working collies i would be pulled down the road like mary poppins until i did joel's method its a game changer alright.
My latest challenge honestly is my own jelly legs, completely forgetting what I'm supposed to do when faced with a dog. I just got past 3 little dogs with my 2 mastiff/boxer cross. The dogs did SO good, but I need serious work 😫 💖
Just started to start the walk inside the house and it changes everything...much better walk
It teaches self control and every behavior is dependent upon that.
It worked for me!! Thank you! 🙏
Toooo good to be true…….. it works
Joel,
After watching and trying your techniques in at least 20 videos I have decided you are actually for real.
I will try this tomorrow and give my honest result
Can't wait to do this with Bronte!!!!
Only problem with this trick at my house is the screen doors that close on their own! I trained a wait/stay at the door, and we use this method everywhere else. Full subscriber of your content, love the channel. I like positive reinforcement for most things, but your whole methodology really helps me correct bad behaviours in a way that's not cruel and the dog fully understands what's up
Great video!
I can’t tell if this channel or the universe is expanding faster😆
Hi, King’s Mom831. 👋 🐾
@@User7688.--_ Hello, my dear 😊
There's a Brit called Nigel Reed, he does this too. I've seen it in some of his oldest videos, about 10 years ago.
I've learned from Nigel too. He helped me a lot as well.
Nigel is brillant but he's a lot more compassionate in his training
New intro, hell yea!
It's really helping our high energy cocker spaniel - thank you, Joel!
Hmm, I didn't know that door hesitancy is so significant! I'll pay more attention to this with my shelter dogs!
This is very hard to do when the door opens toward you. :( I don't have enough room to get the door open and get ready to correct. Suggestions?
I have a 5 1/2 month old westie that does that all the time. Iw ill try and keep up with thuis method. thanks for the great video! new subscriber.
apart from yourself, I have only ever seen Martin McKenna teach this, he explains it as the dog winning points for getting through the door before you, making him leader of the walk. Many of his methods are quite similar to yours, I think you would enjoy him, he ran away from home as a child to lived with the stray dogs and learned their 'language'
Micro/Macro is working awesome with our Cane Corso puppy. ✅
At 11 weeks my Golden waits inside his cage until I invite him out. He’s only had one shot so no walks yet, but it’s a decent start.
Kenneth, my dog is your dog's twin: same problems. But mine is a GSD/Mastiff mix...
@@pmlm1571 haha same but I have a Saint Bernard. If I throw treats on the ground before he notices the dog it helps sometimes.
My 5mon runs out the door, I’m going to work on this technique. Thank you!
I think my dogs starting to get it when i go to back up sometimes now she’s stopping.
Many external doors open inwards resulting in different movement, physical stance and positions of the handler and dog (compared to an outward opening door). Please can you demonstrate your doorway method with an inwardly opening external door and is there anything you would do differently? Thanks
Let me try
Just out of interest what length leash is that..never tire of this stuff btw 😀
were you just sitting in school one day and think "i don't care if i see 30, i'm gonna train killer whales and tigers!"
Tai chi move! Gives you more stability. Not just a dog training video. 😂 I learned that move with my big crazy Berner. After getting pulled 50 times and face planting at least 1/2 dozen times you learn to plant your feet and shift your weight. 😝
Can you show it with a door that has an automatic tension closer?
What about when I just let the dogs out into the back yard (fenced)?
You want the best dogs ever? Use a leash and do this method even when you let them out the back door.
At what age do you train a dog with this?
Joel has puppy videos too. They really helped me with my pup. I can't remember what age he said. Start binge watching. He incorporates many trainings, body language explanations, etc., in each video. Start binge-watching his videos. ✨
We have 2 dogs and individually they are good at the door, but together it's like the start of the Kentucky Derby! How do I work with them together?
Try training them separately then put them together. Just be, prepared to “pop” the one that “forgot.”
My dog would do the exercise perfectly on the leash but as soon as the leash is off she would run out the door
Start binge-watching Joel’s videos. He has a method of “fake taking off the leash” that is great.
THANK YOU!
NOT FLYING OUT DOOR,,, MY DOG CAN DO
PULLING ON LEASH....CRAZY, COMES BACK AND PULLS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
