    Hello. Thank you for the nice compliment. After sculpting with the paper mache pieces I add a "skin" of cloth (just old bed sheets torn into pieces) dipped in white glue. It makes it very durable and allows for detail you can't get with paper alone. I dubbed this process "cloth mache" many years ago, for lack of a better term.

    Your work is really amazing! I love watching these pieces come together gradually, and I think making these videos is a good way of getting people to appreciate the versatility of this medium. I especially love the "unveiling" of the eyes at the end of the process. Also, of course, I love to watch your little cat wander through from time to time :) Thanks for sharing!

    I have been using cloth for years with my mache pieces . This technique has been around since the turn of the century..at least but almost lost in modern mache. I have found pieces..mostly dolls from that era. I find that the more worn the sheet or lighter it is..the better. Dan..you are amazing

      It really is a great medium, no doubt about it. And yes, the more worn the sheet the better. It bothers me that "thrift" stores have become so commercial that they often throw away the most worn sheets. I used to get perfect sheets. They are harder to find now that everyone shops in these places. Thank you for the nice note! Good luck with your work!

    Beautiful video, Dan. You know what the problem with these amazing videos is? They're always so seamless they don't reflect the amount of work you put into them. Kind of like Fred Astaire and dancing: so perfect, it seems effortless.

    Your pieces are amazing. I especially admire your attention to the detail on the scales and the belly of the snake. Your painting looks as if you are using some sort of stains? and layering the colors, even though some others have criticized this, I love the finished product.. Your dragons are awesome! I was trying to figure out what you used for the teeth. Is it a modeling clay? or is it paper mache also? and your eyes. I think it is evident from your dragon video that you make them as well. it looks like reverse glass painting and when they are seen in the finished product after all of the exquisite detailing you do around the eyes and mouth, just beautiful! I am sharing your dragon video with my son as he will definitely love it. Keep pushing Paper Mache! You are very talented.

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  9 лет назад +9

      Thanks again Patty! I don't mind the criticism of my painting. I just tell them to give it a try. Then they can paint the way they like. Having said that, I want to mention that these are much nicer in person. As you guessed, there are many layers of color. I make teeth out of polymer clay like Fimo or Sculpy. You just bake in the oven. And I use taxidermy eyes a lot. Sometimes I buy the "blanks" and paint the inside myself. I appreciate your support!

    What kind of sheet are you using, cotton? It looks pretty thick like canvas. Do you fold it over for the thickness?
    Great job by the way, started my baby dragon awhile back but stopped when I couldn't figure out how to cover the body, paint alone isn't cutting it with me, like your cloth idea, I'm assuming it's dipped in the paste mixture of flour and water, I add compound to mine to give it a hardness. Thanks for the inspiration and also like your painting,teeth and tongue techniques! You've helped me alot to overcome my mind blocks and hesitations on my projects!
    I've also did my wings in stain glass paint and topped with mod podge layered on a sheet of thin Styrofoam packaging, it peeled right off and I lined it over my wire pattern, it turned out better then I could imagine and really sturdy!

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the nice comment Jo! I'm happy I could be of some help. I use old bed sheets. I don't look at the blend. It's more about how worn it is and how well it lays down. I use flour and water paste with the newspaper but not with the cloth. For that I use white glue, usually Elmer's. And Yes, I do fold the cloth once I've soaked it in the glue. For scales I'll usually fold it into triangles. Good luck with your projects!

    Thank you Tanya. I don't put a full cloth on the back side. Just strips to cover the "spines". This is true of wings. The snake is a little different. Because I put scales on the back, this particular project did have cloth on the back.

      GourmetPaperMache I understand. :-) It's just such a contrast with the meditative nature of the process, as I read you said. btw, I'm alison, who learned from your book how to do "cloth-mache", and made my first experiments with two dragons in a tableau that won "best in show, non-functional", which still tickles me! Your book The Simple Screamer ought to be in every school, in my view. I carried the cloth mache to silk, which, for anyone reading, makes very fine horns and fingers. The scarf silk. we spoke a bit a few years ago. Wish you all the best, Dan

And I'm trying to learn and you seem rather friendly (and funny) When you put the bed sheet on and then cut away the extra, do you let it dry completely first? When you did the face scales, was that still the bed sheet? Do you just fold the edges over to get the scale shape? These videos are so cool, and I liked the music on this one a lot :)

    couple of questions , do you use cloth of any kind ? or is it all paper? also it's great that you make these amazing models of dragons! But have you ever thought about making the balrog from LOTR ? ?? :)

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  8 лет назад

      The "skin" is cloth dipped in white glue. A Balrog would be fun, but there is no way to capture the fire aspect.
      Thanks for watching

    query, what is the white wrapping you use? it looks vaguely like plaster bandages but has a different texture to it

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  8 лет назад

      +Haley Sabrina
      That is cloth (bed sheets) dipped in white glue. Plaster wrapping is way too heavy and brittle.

    About your "cloth mache" process, are you using some special kind of cloth?

  • @andrespaka2222

    hello dan I use this technique too, but cut you tell me if you use glue and water with something more, please help me because i think water with blue isnt resintant to much

      @Gourmetpapermache  10 лет назад

      Hello Andres. I am sorry. Something must be lost in translation. I don't understand your question. Do you mean when I add the cloth? I do not add any water to the white glue. For the paper mache paste I use flour and water only. I am not sure if I answered your question.

      Yes, equal parts to start. It will get thicker as you work so you will have to add more water while you are working. I keep extra water close by.

    Hi Dan. Awesome work as usual!
    I know you have said before you like the older more worn sheets, but do you have a preference when it comes to the thread count and material? (Cotton-polyester blend, 100% cotton..... etc)
    cheers :)

      Hello Dani. After sculpting with paper mache I add a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue (like Elmer's). I call it "cloth mache". The scales are just square pieces folded and cut. And yes, a lot of patience involved.
      Take care

    Excuse me sir, I missed a passage, how did you make those spines at 0:24? Sorry for the inconvenience, the fact is that I've a strong passion for these things and I would like to start to make some of these. And how did you "glue them" to the rest of the body? Thanks. :) Can I make these statues just with newspapers? I haven't got the cloth to make the final layer. Thanks again and anyways... your creations are amazing! :D

    • @Gourmetpapermache
      @Gourmetpapermache  7 лет назад +2

      I use Fimo or Sculpy (polymer clay) to make the spines and the teeth. I hold them with hot glue or masking tape. I show the making of this project step-by step on my blog, papermacheblog.com/older-paper-mache-projects/paper-mache-naga-dragon-queen-of-snakes/.
