What about the deformation on sides? People use to Get strechet.

When I use Back Button Focus on my entry level Nikon using the center focus area on my subject. The lense finds the sweet spot and I release the AE-L/AF-L. Then I can recompose with the subject on a third and complete the release. Sometimes it simply will not release.
I thought the whole point of the BBF was to allow single and continuous modes of focus when you needed. But if I cannot focus upon a rock, recompose with that rock in the bottom left intersection but having a bright mountain in the background, then complete the release. What earthly use is it.
I've noticed if the center area in the new composition is brighter or darker than the subject nothing will happen. I've hunted high up and low down in the menus for a solution.
