  • Poets and doctors both save lives, just in different ways. World-champion slam poet Harry Baker shares the heartache of forfeiting the path of medicine for a self-guided career in poetry and writing. This talk is an ode to choosing to be different, woven through two poems that sing with universal truth. While he won’t help the world by becoming a doctor, as he puts it, poetry is just “a less quantifiable way of saving lives.”
TED@StateStreet was a TED-curated event featuring a diverse group of speakers from across the State Street community. Jointly produced by TED and State Street, the event paved a bold way ahead.

I love your poetry, and actually, your chatter in between you performing them. Perhaps, in part, because I empathise, in part of how you make `common place' terms imaginative, and make stories out of observations within each poem, and how you do so, very unashamedly in rather densely used rhyme. I also like how you incorporate scientific or mathematical tokens, being of a similar `heritage' myself.
I'm a few years older than you, not particularly inclined to sitting at a desk all day in an office. I write, and would like to pursue that. But, I need to finish some things properly - `science' and `writing'... I'm a little trapped between the slightly more well-trodden `scientific' course and the rather unknown writing one. Hopefully at some point I shan't simply be badly straddling the two in uncertainty. And can have enough cash to get by.
    Best of luck to you.
