The history began around 1100 A.D. and the detailed history of the castle residents started with the marriage of Joan de Compton to Geoffrey Gilbert, in 1329 brought the two families together and the Gilberts have been adding, altering and renovating the castle ever since.
The American Connection
The world would be a different place without the Gilbert men and their exploration of North America. In 1583, in the name of the Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Humphrey Gilbert colonised Newfoundland. Two years later his half brother, Sir Walter Raleigh started planning the Roanoke Colony in North Carolina. Sir Humphrey’s youngest son Raleigh Gilbert continued exploring, settling the Popham Colony in Maine, in 1607. It only survived one year, succumbing to a bitter winter. Видеоклипы
According to my ancestry Sir Geoffrey was my 19th great grandfather 🥰 thanks for sharing his story
Chasing my family heritage for years and learned that this is where i came from!!
Thank you for taking the time to put this on RUclips. After a painstaking 6 months of research by a historian friend a couple years ago, I found out that Geoffrey, Otho, Sir Humphrey, etc are also my direct descendants. We are the line that ended up in Virginia, eventually in charge of the third outpost ( Jamestown being the first) , ending up in Washington Georgia before, during and after the U.S. civil war, then dispersered to Atlanta and South Carolina for the most part.
I would love to visit some time, say hello and shake hands and hear stories from any Gilbert's or historians still there. 👌😊
Thank you so much for uploading this...
My husband is a Compton.
We're planning a visit.
My great-gradfather is named Gilbert. Did ancestry and Sir John was my great-uncle (many "greats")
I would give anything to live there today.
Loved it - I have a relative with the last name of Gilbert - she came from England so maybe???
