I was in the 7th grade and came home from school. The radio was playing. My mother didn't care much for rock ' n roll. Then this song came on. "My mama told me" She shook her finger at me and mouthed. "You better shop around." That cracked me up.
I was born in the latter 60's. I always thought the songs and bands of that decade were breaking barriers! Creativity in music and singing was abundant! Smokey and The Miracles along with this song are the epitome of that, this song is timeless! 🙌👍
Well, Dylan early on called Smokey the US's greatest poet. The Beatles covered Smokey and spoke reverently of him too. This ain't just another band. Even without counting all the hits (e.g. My Girl) Smokey wrote for other Motown greats.
Anybody else notice no string section? and no electric bass....Jamerson playing a upright! Motown's mickey Stevenson brought in the Detroit symphony or at least one member and he got a few of his friends to join him and the string section was born. The Funk brother's was so tight we didn't miss the sweet sounds of violins playing.
Love the early Miracles stuff - this is one the first one I recall hearing from them on the radio back in the 'day!' I can remember all the older music but I can't find my keys!
I recently joined Smokey Robinson's and Neil Diamond's facebook fan page. Both are very interesting and I am proud to have heard and enjoyed their music over the years.
On this day in 1960 {December 27th} the Miracles performed "Shop Around" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'... Exactly three weeks earlier on December 6th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on February 20th, 1961 it peaked at #2 {for 1 week} and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... The week it was at #2, the #1 record was "Calcutta" by Lawrence Welk... It reached #1 {for 8 weeks} on January 16th, 1961 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... Captain & Tennille's covered version peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on June 5th, 1976 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... The group's 1st recorded record was “Got a Job” in 1958, it was an answer song to the Silhouettes’ “Get a Job” {it didn't make the charts, but its on You Tube}...
The miracles’ smooth dance moves and cool suits are making me happy right now… born in the wrong decade : ( 1960 was like the peak of America - the clothes, the cars, the movies , the design, the art and architecture I wish I could have lived then
Does anyone viewing this wonderful vintage video know why the female member of the group wasn't in this one? She's pictured in the other (still photo) of 'Shop Around'. Just wondered. Thanks.
Thanks for uploading! This clip used to be on RUclips and had over a million views, but then disappeared. So glad to see it again! Greetings from the USA.
This sounds like the original version and then they rerecorded it for the hit version. It's faster. Think Berry Gordy slowed down the tempo on the hit version. Jamie by Eddie Holland had two versions in 1961. Jamie doesn't get much airplay but a great record by Eddie Holland before he became more famous as a songwriter
What do you think of these groups like this and the Temptations where the other singers dance in synch, or act out the words in the tamest way..say compared to James Brown?
Shopping..a priceless privilege..
20 year old Smokey...❤❤
Smokey Robinson one of the World's Greatest Singers and Songwriter have wrote so many Beautiful Songs. Thanks Smokey
8-23-24 Those Miracles and Smokey’s Collette provided the smooth beautiful artistic cream to the cake
Thank you for your comment.
I was 2 yrs old when this Song came out.
Sam Cooke #1 Smokey my #2 of all time
Half the audience (more?) seem focused to the left of the stage where the Miracles are singing? Why?
Such a great performance.
I love how Smokey gets in a couple strums on the air guitar, on the turnarounds!
Pretty girls comes a dime a dozen, shop around for true lovin..Love this song!
As do handsome dudes lol
Smokey Robinson is a legend. The world is a better place when Motown broke the barriers of popular music.

Is there a clip of them singing it. I know they did Mickey's Monkey on The Show and then "You Really Got A Hold On Me".
Lawrence Welk, Hilarious. However, great info. that was the end of that same ole same ole, Motown burst the Champagne Bubble.
Good stuff thank you!
Does anybody know who the backing musicians were? The guitar part reminds me of the early Beatles, as if this had influenced their style.
