      Also, block ice lasts longer than bag ice pound for pound. Less surface area. It’s not available everywhere. I found a used 12v refrigerator/freezer on Offer it up recently. Paid 1/2 price new. I’m not sure if your jacket could run a fridge. You would have to mount a 100 watt panel to the roof to charge all the time. That was a big deal for me. Happy trails.

    If we're going short-term then I wouldn't mind either van, there both functional and efficient suitable for van life/road trips. If we're talking full-time living in a van I'm going with Kyle and Ali's, purely because they have a built-in bathroom, that's basically the only reason.

      For all off grids definitely toilet and shower is the biggest issue.
      Power isn't hard to deal with at all I can do my own inverter for less than 200 bucks.
      Cooking and utensils are a problem. Because battery drain.
      Will need some lithiums battery and mount a solar panel on roof.

    You can put ice in large, plastic fast food cups with lids and they will keep the cooler cold without melting into a watery mess. Clear cups work better than opaque - just don’t use styrofoam because they’re insulated.

    Great video! I have owned a conversion van that was finished like the RAM inside and have been down the budget side like the little Ford. After living both sides of "vanlife" spectrum I will take the simpler lower budget version all day any day just because it helps you appreciate the small things in life so much more!

  • @sophiemarcaurele
    @sophiemarcaurele 3 года назад +111

    In the Vanlife community, “luxury” conversions means the glorious rigs starting at 100k + made by the pros at Advanced RV, Humble Roads, Freedom Vans... maybe Rossmönster Vans.
    What your friends built is a standard mid-range: looks like they used the plans for the Beach House layout, by Sara & Alex James. There’s a lot of videos showing very similar vans - and some people managed the same layout around 30k.
    I love the small, sweet and simple rigs as well as the fully decked out skoolies. At the end of the day, there’s no comparing, only what suits YOU, what you can afford and deal with, and what gets you out there living your dreams!!🤗🚐😎

      Yuppity, yup. You can flip a long version, extended top Sprinter van into a full-on, legally classed camper, for less than 5-6k EUR/USD - it just depends on what you use and how you do the conversion.) You'd be surprised at what 5,000 EUR can do, especially if you do most of the work yourself, you can cut the costs by over 30-40% or more. The most expensive parts of the build are the necessary electronics and batteries, fridge/freezer, water heaters and other optional thingies - everything else is basically doable with only 2-4k EUR.
      Oh and the shower/WC can become a pretty expensive upgrade, depending on how you decide to build it. I did mine for less than 800 EUR with custom built (professionally) PVC frame for my Sprinter and layout with an anti leak/moisture system below and behind the outside of the shower frame. The inside of the shower is done with real tiles - all for 700-something bucks. As for the toilet, if you opt for non-portable aka. normal, fixed flushing/self cleaning toilet system, be prepared to drop big bucks on plumbing, toilet containers and the toilet itself.
      My build, with a large shower, 220cm bed, TV, a small regular fridge with freezer, 3 very large solar panels, separate kitchen area with a sink and a small dishwasher, an AC system and so on and so forth, cost me only slightly over 8,000 EUR, which over 4k went on the fridge, shower, AC, dishwasher and unnecessarily expensive, custom built wooden countertops. Without these 5 things, the entire build, everything else, would have ended up costing me less than 4,000 EUR.

    • @GeorgeOu
      @GeorgeOu 3 года назад +8

      Luxury compared to the $7000 van. Advanced RV is in the $250K to $300K plus range and it becomes absurd for most people. There's not much of a functional difference between the $70K van and $300K van.

    Thanks for keeping it real! I love your small minimalist van and the way you go about it. There's definitely an art to how minimally live and maximize the fun. I think that equation can be challenging and you guys are doing great job! Coming from beat-up VW buses ('1966 & '1971 campers), I always loved vans. I still have a super minimal Astro van I bought for only $900, that is still running well and my wife and I use it for short weekend to a few weeks long trips. I've always associated van life with dirt-bag 'fun-hogs' life in the past, but nowadays it became more like how much $$ can you spend on building out the most expensive vans out there. It has become trophy shows of rich people's luxury hobby. You guys have something that money can't buy, your great personalities and fun factor!

I’m thinking of changing up the build so there is less bed and more workspace/ ability to cook inside., But you are so right - you can’t beat the agility, gas mileage, stealth factor and affordability of the Transit Connect. I love my little buggy but yes I do get jealous of the luxury builds too.

      I have rented out a van for 10 days and I had a little of both world since it was a convertible set up in a small van but storage was the compromise. I believe that if you are fulltime living in a small van storage would be very importante but in a weekender not so much.
      I'm working on my transit connect plans and as of now I have fitted in a cassette toilet, a tiny sink, drawer refrigerator, an exterior shower, electrical both solar and campsite. Storage is minimal in my plans but still doable and some extra storage can be managed on the roof. And being a little more of a minimalist can also help.

    Helpful tip on the yeti cooler. President cool the cooler. Basically when you first put ice into it, it takes a lot to get the temperature down. Basically put a bag in the cooler on the drinks and food. 20 minutes later put more ice in it. The second bag or two should last much longer because the cooler has been precooled.

    This is so interesting. Great camera work too. I'll add a cheeky note, if you're going only once a day you might want to check your fiber intake because it sounds like you're backed up :) studies found people who "go" more often and in larger amounts are healthier because they're able to get rid of their waste rather than re-absorbing it while it's still backed up in there :D

    I’m putting the finishing touches on a van build cost breakdown video of my own (Thurs or Fri upload) and wondered is the $50k & $7k van+build costs? I’ve had my van for 6 years and have been living/traveling in it for 5.5 years, so my cost breakdown is van+repairs+build+upgrades over the span of 6 years.

    To keep food cold I try to bring two coolers one for drinks and veg the other meats and I buy blocks of ice when possible or make them myself old liter bottle of soda with water frozen last a long time. The other is put cold cuts in with the drinks cause you need more often. Also buy frozen meats they will still be good five days later with ice blocks . And the biggest tip is know what you want before you open the cooler I have seen so many people just stare inside the cooler wondering what to eat lol.

    3 years ago we bought a 2008 Mazda 5 at auction for $1000. We then spent another $1000 to get it mechanically sound. Took out the rear seats and built an elevated sleeping platform so that a twin mattress fits perfectly. It works awesome for us on our typical one or two week road trips. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money to get out there and have incredible road trips.

    Thanks for being honest about the Yeti cooler. People over hype those things and for half the price you can get RTIC, Pelican, etc., that have same or better insulation. But none of those replace a plug in cooler.

    I have a similar sized cooler box like yours which I use to store tins etc as well as a second smaller cooler box which stores the ice and ice blocks. I then have a small cooler bag which my cold food and cold ice blocks go into. No wasted ice and mess plus I get about 4 to 5 days of cold ice blocks before having to buy more ice. It works for me

      @@ian.and.ana. I was having the same issues with water going over everything and having to throw out the food because it was effectively inedible, you’ll also end up using less ice too.
