Six years ago I visited Staten Island and I wanted to walk over the Bayonne Bridge to New Jersey so I walked from St. George Ferry Terminal along Richmond Terrace to Jewett Ave. It was taking so long that I've ask a man who worked around there if I was close to the Bayonne Bridge he laughed and told me I still had over two hours more. Then he informed me that the bridge was closed and I would not able to walk on it. I was so mad at myself that I just took the bus back to the Ferry Terminal. So, I thank you ActionKid for this wonderful video and that I decided that the only way I will walk onto the bridge is by watching your video!

I want you to know we love your walking videos/live walks, especially with all the historical facts you provide about NY. We have never been to NY and will never be able to, so we enjoy your site completely. However, the videos with your electric scooter we will forego as you made us both nervous wrecks!! TY for this great ride here. Born in Bayonne in the 1950's & moved out late 60's.
For anyone watching, here's a couple of points...
There's actually 3 crossings from SINY to NJ (Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, & Outerbridge Crossing). Yes, all 3 have huge tolls that are run by the Port Authority of NY/NJ. One way paid.
The Bayonne Bridge constructed in the 1930's was recently raised (roadway only) to allow for higher shipping vessels that pass underneath. That waterway underneath is known as The Kill Van Kull. Interesting story about the KVK...as a kid it was a brutally hot day. My buddies wanted to go swimming in the KVK but the water was badly badly polluted. I declined to go swimming that day & another kid who had an open wound sore on his leg caught a nasty infection & died days later.
On 5th St you drove by a former US Congressman's house on the right, & as a kid we went to his house for a school project & met w/him. Cornelius Gallagher was his name.
The end of your video is at 5th & Bway & the iconic 5th Street Deliette has been there forever. That section of Bayonne is known as Bergen Point (a very nice section of Bayonne). Walked that route many times going to school.
As you pointed your camera to the right at the very vey end, you caught an image of the convent & school (brick buildings) of St Andrew's Parish, where I attended. School has been sold off & is now defunct. Interesting note...11/22/63...I was in 1st grade when the nuns announced President Kennedy had been assassinated. They put the TV on (one advantage of going to Catholic school vs public schools/no TVs back then), had us pray for JFK, & sent us home early. Nuns were all crying as JFK was the 1st Catholic president, which was a big deal back then. A day you always remember where you were when big events happen.
If you do anymore Bayonne drives I'd love to see my old neighborhoods. Lived at 79 Humphrey Ave (between W 4th & 3rd & 27 W 7th St between Bway & Ave C. The Bergen Point Pharmacy I believe is still there at the corner of W4th & Humphrey. Another iconic Bayonne location. You should also drive along 1st St which has some nice parks etc along the Kill Van Kull.
TY again for the ride along.

Staten Island north of the SI expressway is as densely populated as eastern Queens. The farther south you go, the more suburan it is. The new Goethels bridge did open somewhat recently. The new version is once again, a cable stay type bridge as they are cost effective and safe. I replaced a steel truss type bridge. There is a 3rd bridge that goes fom SI to NJ, the Outer Bridge Crossing, which connects to Perth Amboy, NJ in the southwest tip of SI.

@15:04 when the wind is blowing east you can hear the people in that ball field on the lower right from Faber Park.
Faber Park is really nice, they have a pool with a 10 foot deep middle section. It's never crowded, been the way since the 80's. You get a nice breeze coming off the water
Also there are 3 bridges between Staten Island and NJ, Bayonne, Goethals and Outer.
As for tolls, you don't pay to leave the island (including the Verazzano). You only pay coming in.

I will give you a little bit of history. I have lived in Bayonne for 53 years. They just recently made that bike/walking path there and raised the bridge 100 feet a few years ago. That path for walking used to be on the other side. The reason it is so wide because it was originally designed to have the Hudson Light Rail that runs through Bayonne was supposed to go over the Bayonne bridge but never happened. The last I saw, the bridge is $19 going to NY. As a kid, we would climb the span and down the main supports to the park below. The reason the bridge is so steep is because when they needed to raise it because of the new bigger ships, they would have to obtain a lot of person properties to run the bridge out but the people won, so the only way to raise it was to make it steeper. First winter trucks were sliding down the bridge in the snow or ice. They had to shut it down a few times already. Me and a friend used to walk to Clove Lake Park all the time. Where you stopped is downtown Bayonne which is also called Bergan Point. When you ride up Broadway, that is the main shopping district of the town. If you went south a few blocks, there is a park that runs along the water.

Kenneth, you might enjoy taking your scooter to the Huguenot section of Staten Island. From there, you can take the Outerbridge to Woodbridge New Jersey, which would give you a different experience than staying around the Bayonne and Jersey City and Hoboken areas. It must be beautiful there this time of the year, too. Stay safe.

The roadway on the Bayonne Bridge was raised about 60 feet from its previous height to allow super-large container ships to enter Port Newark. That’s why the roadway is so steep and long. Prior to raising the roadway, the pedestrian path was on the other side of the bridge. I’m surprised there are so many pedestrians. I used to walk that path and never see a soul!

It’s pronounced BAY OWN. That Bayonne bridge has just gone through a total makeover actually raising the bridge so larger ship traffic can pass under it.
There are two other bridges going to NJ from SI. Goethals and Outerbridge. All three bridges have tolls. The Goethals bridge has recently been replaced with a twin span.
Id be careful going through red lights, as you are on a motorized vehicle they could, and will, ticket you if they are in the mood. I have seen it. Also, someone having the green light can, and will, speed through if it’s turning red for them. So, be careful. Born in Staten Island, but lived in Brooklyn as well. So I’m fully versed in traffic in NYC.

I'm surprised an intelligent person would make a comment that breaking the law is a social norm. Both going through a red light and jay walking are dangerous and that's why it shouldn't be done; not because you may get a ticket. Than you ridicule automobile drivers for their traffic infractions. Sad.

@@ActionKid Work on it better and listen to how the local people say it. Most people would think you're not from NY.
