  • Hey there, my name is Cory and I am an artist who makes environmental and ecological inspired artwork. Almost 8 months ago I worked on a project where I made homemade paper from plants (well grass to be exact!) and printed digital photography onto it simply by running it through my laser printer. But laser printers have their limitations, so in this video I experiment with two different techniques I've never tried on the grass paper - film-free decals and cyanotype!
Since I last printed on grass paper, I have really been wanting to run with the idea and make something large scale. The experiments and results from this video really helped me figure out what options I have for creating such artwork in the near future!
Thanks so much for checking out the video, stay tuned for more, and let me know if you like the cyanotype or decal better!
Materials and tools I used in this video:
DIY grass paper ( • Making Paper From Gras... )
Sunnyscopa film-free waterslide decal paper, type B and W2 glue (I used type type B but in their email they reccommended type M / multi-use)
    Brush
    Hair dryer
    Jacquard cyanotype kit
    Transparency film
    Glass (from picture frame)
    Laser printer

The urge to make an entire book from grass paper and film decal is strong

I worked out it's cheaper to get a cheap printer, where it doesn't matter if I ruin it, than to get that amount of paper film

Would be really interesting to do a more traditional ink print on this type of paper, woodblock or press printing

My favorite part about this is your basically R&D about a question that no one asked for the company.

I've loved your different trials / tests. It's indeed amazing how the grass paper passed all the experiments successfully. ¡Good job!

Thank you! I really love the way cyanotypes look so natural - they're a perfect pair with plant paper in my opinion. Now that winter is over, I might have to do some more plant paper and cyanotype pieces!

I've been waiting for a new video on your grass paper :D
Sweet how both results were as expected. What shocked me was how I thought that the paper is fragile, but it's perfectly okay when you wash it in water huh :O
It seemed like the cyanotype will be a good choice to make the paper looked like it has a different natural texture.. great experiment!!!

Thanks for sticking around! And yes, it’s not everyday when experimenting with new materials and processes goes as planned! I was anticipating the paper to breakdown, but I’m so happy it’s stronger than it looks. I feel a new grass paper cyanotype project brewing! Thanks for your comment and support, it means a lot!

Have you considered finding someone with a printing press? Screen printing might work well, for example.

Acetone dissolves laser printer ink really well.
Maybe a Acetone vaper bath (similar to ABS vapor smoothing in 3D Printing) would gently dissolve the ink, letting it soak in to the paper more.
Also maybe it removes the tiny ink blobs (8:14). Would be Interesting to see :)

Can! We write on that leaf made paper?

Usually... yes! But with handmade plant paper you never know how media will react with the fibers so I always recommend testing first. (I'm currently working on testing homemade leaf ink on leaf paper... which will be it's own video!)

This is really cool no doubt I just wish you would have printed literally any other photo than just pictures of grass, a portrait or a landscape would've been very nice
