This lovely town getting attacked was such a twist of the knife. I'm glad there was a decent chunk of folks we could save, but MAN was it extra painful to watch Dan die after already saving him once... The fact you can buy goods from him just prior to that fate is all the more sad when you're led to assume he'll be using that to settle down later. I hope the remake doesn't just make us watch and he CAN be saved, there's enough meanspirited moments in the story as is. And bah, if there was ANY spot to make Beatrix flinch, it should have been here...
The bonus treasure sidequest with Quina by the antlion hole was nice, I guess.

If they can raise the stakes prior to this then he can live, if not bye bye Dan.

@@brandonstinson4988 I think the stakes are high enough with FOUR major settlements/armies being attacked, with three badly in need of repairs and the other just outright blown up, man. :V
And that's not counting the areas presumably torn apart by Kuja's doing and the Lifa Tree, AND Madain Sari in the not-so-distant past; More than enough gets messed with as is. o3o

I hope the Remake gets rid of Garnet being an idiot and instead has her stay by Zidane’s side at the end of Disk 1 Lindblum, fixing the poorly done love story, and all of the consequences from her stupid and selfish action of running back home (after just escaping from there) and making Disk 1 and most of Disk 2 a huge waste of time.
Need I remind people that it was Garnet’s fault that Cleyra got nuked.

Beatrix should have flinched back in Burmecia, Garnet said back in Lindblum that she "tried to tell everyone in Alexandria Castle that her mother was going nuts and nobody believed her", which apparently includes Beatrix, but what is happening in Burmecia should be direct proof to Beatrix that Garnet was completely right, yet she doesn't consider Garnet's feelings in any of this. What makes this worse is that neither Garnet nor Steiner are around to see Beatrix committing all of these atrocities. (Yet another example as to why Garnet's "run back home" subplot was such a lousy writing choice)

The Last Day of the Burmecians

There is also a deleted scene that you can see on RUclips (look up "FFIX Deleted Scenes") where Freya meets the King of Burmecia and the High Priest of Cleyra, with the King apologizing to Freya and asking her to forgive him for something. But it is never explained what this thing is. This is another interesting context that is cut and wasted.

We never really get that much of an interesting and interconnected lore with Cleyra. It's just there so that it can get blown up later (all thanks to Garnet's stupidity), same thing with Burmecia… minus the exploding part.
1:05 [Vivi is outside of the inn, and approaches 4 rats (2 adults, 2 children), the same four which were seen before entering the Palace Area in Burmecia]
    "Look!"
    "Pointy-headed devil!"
Burmecian Refugee Learie "D-Don't come any closer!"
Burmecian Soldier Dan "You demon! Leave my family alone!"
Why the heck is this scene even taking place when Freya personally vouched for Vivi a little earlier back in Burmecia, in front of that very same rat person, Dan? (Yes, that is the same person that Freya talked to in Burmecia and defended Vivi in front of him, yet now Dan seems to have completely forgotten all of that)
[Vivi enters the inn, while Burmecian Soldier Dan chases him]
Burmecian Soldier Dan "You bastard! You killed my father!"
    Burmecian Refugee Learie "Bastard!"
[Each of their two children shout "Bastard!" as well]
In this translation, this remark looks somehow especially strange, way to let your children learn a new swear word and have a potty mouth, Dan and Learie.
Night Oracle Donnegan "Well, well. A bit touchy today, aren't we?"
Burmecian Soldier Dan "He's one of the demons that sacked Burmecia!"
    Vivi "I-I haven't hurt anyone."
And that's all we will get of that subplot, which, as I've already explained above, was completely pointless.

how the game goes about depicting Quina is just wrong. Every ATE involving Quina provides another heavy-handed reminder that Quina loves food… and that’s Quina’s entire character arc. Quina wants to eat food but goes about asking for food in a socially awkward and off-putting manner. That’s the joke, and it is a joke the game repeats a hundred times. There’s no nuance or deeper meaning to Quina’s behavior either. Quina just wants to eat food.
What I object to the most is how often Quina breaks the narrative consistency of the game. There are dire and emotionally gripping moments in the succeeding scenes, and if Quina talks it’s usually an inquiry on where the food is. Quina’s mannerisms should provide the game with a constant supply of levity, but honestly, the game doesn’t demand added levity. All along their journey, the characters have been making wisecracks and jokes as they interact with their surroundings. If all the characters are going to crack wise during the story, then why do we need a purely comic relief character? That is why I honestly believe Quina is redundant.

1:40 Freya "Ah, the ceremony from the time when Burmecia and Cleyra were one."
Thank you for that brief, pointless bit of "Rat people split up" lore that is never fully explained.
Honestly, instead of that pointless backstory, the writers should have written Cleyra as simply a sacred pilgrimage site made by the rats, at one with nature, kind of like Mt. Fuji or Mt. Everest, with connections to the summoner tribe. (As the summoners used to live in Alexandria on the Mist Continent several centuries ago, before being forced to move to Madain Sari on the Outer Continent) Maybe the summoners showed something special about Cleyra to the rats and it became a pilgrimage site, and it also could have been great foreshadowing and lore buildup for Gaia's and Terra's crystals and lifestream. It could basically be like the IX version of Cosmo Canyon from FFVII. There could even be contrasts between it and the Iifa Tree.
Freya "I understand." "Zidane, I met with utter failure when trying to defend Burmecia..." "And I will not allow Brahne to exert her will upon us any longer!"
Zidane "You've changed, Freya." "I didn't think you were so strong when I first met you."
This is what I hate too. Zidane so pathetically says: "Freya, you have changed". You start to think that we are talking about some kind of "character development" here (as the writers are trying to forcefully imply), and he continues: "well, you are sooooo strong." Stop the pretentiousness.
Freya "I could not bring peace to Burmecia and thus fulfill Sir Fratley's wish." "But now, all I can do is protect this beautiful place."
What about the reinforcements from Lindblum, the airship brigade that Cid was supposed to send? Which we never saw in Burmecia. (Or will in Cleyra)
Zidane "Yeah, protecting Cleyra is the best thing you can do for yourself."
Freya "Doing so will help me."
Thank you for pointing out the obvious. Dumb lines like these are clearly just for padding.
