Listening to the pianist Abdullah Ibrahim is an experience that transcends pure musical fact. This musician may well be considered a true living legend. Having emerged during the 1960s in the golden age of South African jazz, he was forced into exile, first in Europe and then in the United States, to escape the horror of racist apartheid. Singled out by Duke Ellington, he made his name with his original piano style, called African piano, a synthesis of jazz tradition, free avant-garde innovations and African influences. A symbolic figure in the fight against racism, the pianist returned to his homeland after the fall of the regime. His music is meditation, prayer and song; songs of love, peace and brotherhood addressed to all people under the sign of a new humanism.

Ibrahim is a gift post-apartheid South Africa lost. A human pearl in the arts that could made a huge contribution in South African arts, in hand with Mirriam Makeba whose ashes we washed away by the ocean. What a waste...
