Mike Portnoy played it right. He had FUN and didn't play it just like Bonham because even BONHAM never played a song the same way every time. He played in a Bonham style which rocked!
+DrummingMethods he didnt play it just like jh bonham cause he cant.he played it without emotion thats why bonham will be always one step in front of any drummer.
kostas pap Bonham showed what is possible on drums not impossible. Quit believing in drum gods and know that you too can achieve what your heart desires. Bonham was great because he raised the bar in certain aspects and now we know what is possible. If you think playing Bonhams stuff is impossible I advis you to check out my buddy Terry Keating on the Bonzoleum channel :)
Sorry Mike.. I know it has been 7 years .. I just now saw this.. You have always been at the top of my list for KICK ASS drum Guru's Since I first heard Images and Words Summer of '92!! You Rule Dude!!!!
As a drummer for 43 yrs I had a good time watching this, Mike has a great time playing some old school and the rest had a great time, good to see them playing the stuff I grew up on, and they kinda made it there's, that's cool 👍 that's what music is all about having fun,and keeping it real, great job.
He really doesn't know the live version that well. Portnoy really hasn't picked up John Bonham's live playing much. There's tons of bootlegs out there of this song and Bonzo played it much more relaxed and smoother than Portnoy could ever play it.
Awesome job , makes me laugh reading some of the comments of the mockers. He play bonhams style perfect he is the formula one of the modern drumming would like to see some of you guys knocking his playing do a better job, I no l couldn't get near him ,really appreciate watching the pro players. Thanks Mike very inspirational.
As to the people posting about the drum kit I actually got to play it. Amazing sounds come from it. It took me a few seconds to realize I was the one playing... Absolutely thrilling! The cymbals are weighted exactly to John Bonham's and the set specifically designed the same way. As far as big, you can't imagine especially the 26" kick drum..
Thanks for posting Mike. Wish I could of been there. Love the drum cam! Thanks for looking out for us drum geeks. So nice to see the view from the back!!
I love watching guys play songs like this. The time signatures, speed up and slow downs, all kinds of shit in this. Mike is great drummer and so fun to watch
Ok as a drummer of almost 20 years the "no feel" comments are the most ignorant comments Ive ever heard and Ive heard this said about Portnoy and other drummers I love many times before. What Ive come to realize is its usually from ignorant one style only jazz drummers who can never for the life of them play the way one of these prog/metal drummers can... and its ok! Not everyone can play everything or may not want to but to come dogging a Hall of Fame drummer about his "feel" it's fkn stupid grow up and dont suck
People are so biased about Bonham , about feel and all that other stuff. He was a very good drummer. But Mike Portnoy can blow Bonham away. Any drummer would agree. Non-drummers won't agree. But a drummer's opinion holds a little more weight than a Zep fan. Mike Portnoy does an excellent job on this song, if not better job than Bonzo himself.
Not sure what all the negative comments are about...are we watching the same video?Guess what he is NOT John Bonham he is Mike Portnoy and he played just like Mike Portney..and he fucking played his ass off!! That was a GREAT jam...and this coming from the BIGGEST Led Zeppelin fan on the planet! Peace.
Watching and listening to you play, always was, is and will be a great pleasure. Maybe it through unhealthy, but your game and tune the drums has always been my style. Maybe my interest does not go hand in hand with the music, but I love the drums since childhood. Yours Mike and I wish you more success and joy of playing.
This is prolly the most inspired playing Ive ever heard from him. He's getting off on it from the very fist hit. I'm no DT fanboy, as a matter of fact they bored me to death. Mike is an exception. He's not only a world class technician ( Buddy , Peart etc) but is a true rocker. This was the best Bonham style playing I've ever heard because he was so in it. The fills are the tastiest shit on the planet. His foot ( single pedal) are spot on crazy. He's a swiss army knife.
"Bonzos birthday bash" great bootleg from 5/31/73. Loved the cartoon artwork on that one! Gonna have to dig that out and blow the dust off the ancient B&O turntable now. Great tribute Mr. Portnoy, done.
DaveC Trying to be like Bonzo they are, and i think instead of that they could seek their own style and add some personal pieces cause imitating led zepp ... is just impossible. Good try though
Are you kidding? he's in Mike Portnoy world......everything else is tuned out. He's really feeling it on this way. You can see how happy he is, unlike some of the DT songs where he looks bored.
I mean, he flat out can't play the song lol. Particularly the segment at 4:29, he lacks the technique to actually play it right, and instead, over simplifies it. I wouldn't call it "easy" compared to Dream Theater when this very video demonstrates he simply wasn't skilled enough to play the song properly LOL
no groove? He honestly actually played identical to how Bonham played off The Song Remains The Same dvd, fills, gong hits, single bass triplets. I've been playing for 11 years..started with led zeppelin and this is one of the best covers of the extended version dazed and confused i've ever heard.
Ninja Flips No, no, no, no, no Peart is a good technical drummer but he does not have the feel to play Bonham's drum parts. Also Peart never played behind the beat. He also plays crisp tight eighth notes. Bonham's style is more languid and he drags out every note and it is this which gives that Bonham feel. Modern drummers like Taylor Hawkins tend to play on the beat. There was a brief band called Salty Dog and their drummer had a similar feel to Bonham.
TheHonestjbone If you have been playing for 11 years you will hear there is quads in at one point where there should be a crossover triplet. If you are going to play this surely the crossover triplet is a must.
I love how they covered the best version of this song: the live one. It's the best because of the middle part where it goes into an early form of Achilles Last Stand (listen around 6:00 ).
MP did a KILLER job. So close to the movie/soundtrack version it's frightening. Proved (to me) that he can do the psychotic Wackermann/Peart/Bruford/Bozzio/Caliuta (sp?) stuff and then lay it down and imitate steady '73 / '74 Bonzo stuff/style. Tichy's Bonzo trib guys - as always - kick ass as well.
rubadee It is just triplets and single bass drummers like me do this all the time. Listen to the end of Rock and Roll Bonham used to do this all the time. Nothing special. His groove was more impressive
I still watch this video, so tasty those drum with a good recording camera (comparing to zeppelin stuff from 70's) and portnoy doing fine on this awesome tribute. I wish o could play on that legendary ludwig
really nice to hear some of the Zeppelin era appropriate motifs in there. when I read the title of the video, I was expecting something very different and terrible lol
This is overall an amazing cover. I'm usually not very happy with covers of songs from Zep and such, but this is great. I can see the feeling from Mike Portnoy and I love that they included the famous "San Francisco" part from their lives performances. Overall, it was a great tribute to Bonham and I'm glad I heard it.
The key to Bonham's playing is that he would tend to play off the beat instead of on it. He would kind of lag his drumming to suit the style of the song. If the riff was a straight on count, we would swing the beat. If it was a swinging riff, then he would play off the swing and play a backbeat of sorts. You can see this in the studio version of "Since I've Been Lovin You". Also, Bonham had a galloping drum rhythm, which he used that in "Song Remains the Same".
EZCreepin No the key to Bonham's drumming was great feel and no one has ever replicated this. It is innate and can not be taught and set Bonham ahead of his peers. He was not as technical as a drummer like a Mike Mangini or Jojo but he has bags of feel.
People will nitpick anything they can. I thought he did a damn good job. It sounds very similar to the live version on SRTS. He played the Bonzo style kit, and had the same old fee as Bonham used to. I don't know why on earth some of you think it's a crappy performance, but I guarantee none of you would play a 13 min song like this any better, so sit down and shut the F up!
Wow Mike, amazing as usual. I really like how you blend your feel into the original movement of songs (meaning whatever cover you play). Simply inspiring sir!!!
WHOA!!!!! When those vocals kick in!!!! HELL YEAH, DIRTY AND GRINDY!!!!! LOVE IT!!!! Even the drums sound old school... That Bass kick... CRAZY--how far drums have come in the last 40 years!!!! 😂😂😂😂❤️🥁🥁🥁🥁🎶🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪💥
Mikes a great drummer but I wished he would have followed Bonzo's style a little closer. I always liked Bonzo's rolls through out the song. I thought it sounded empty without them. It's just that, that is such a well known song for drummers you can't help but notice even though Mike is one of the greatest drummers in the world. Your ears are waiting for something that doesn't happen.
when I see some playing of Led Zeppelin drums I'm never critical because I've never seen someone play with the same level of power and smoothness of Bonzo, but here, I see the power of Bonham, playing on a similar timbre to his. Which is a plus. Best Bonzo cover I've ever seen until now.
He probably originally meant to hit it and then mute it, but decided not to at the last second. However, he forgot to tell his left hand that. I've done stuff like that before.
I am 61 and English, so grew up with all the major rock and prog rock groups. Bonzo’s style was unique and legendary, but in different ways so was Pink Floyd, Rush etc. Mike Portsoy is a master and can cover all the different styles to perfection. I am new to Dream Theater, love their music, my only criticism is that they tend to overplay, sometimes the art of perfection is space and knowing when not to overplay like Pink Floyd. Both Mike Portsoy and Mike Mangini are phenomenal drummers.
I am not a huge Portnoy guy to be honest but Bonham is my favorite ever and Mike actually did the best tribute I can remember well him and Jimmy D’Anda from the bullet boys. Great stuff here!
Lets pretende that everybody in the world has money to buy paiste. Gavin Harrison, Larnell Lewis, Todd sucherman, Benny greb, Tony Roidster, Neil Peart, ALL of the arent Paiste endorsed. Please, dont be a fanboy
I think what he's saying is that it's easy enough to play through the songs, but to play them them with enough passion and feel in the way Bonham did requires a whole new level skill
I've been playing PAISTE cymbals for nearly forty years. Rudes, 2002s, Signatures, Twenty Series, Sound Creations … Hell, I've even got some Alphas and I love them too!
People are waaay too critical on Portnoy! I think he did just fine! Granted it doesn't have quite the same feel as Bonham's playing but he still played almost flawlessly. I think Ray Luzier was the highlight at Bonzo bash. He played the best and with the most balls! Absolutely stunning performance if you haven't seen it.
So this is like a 5 year old going to DisneyLand for the first time for portnoy right? Just being invited to honor your biggest influence with the music he influenced.... Super awesome!
Mike Portnoy played it right. He had FUN and didn't play it just like Bonham because even BONHAM never played a song the same way every time. He played in a Bonham style which rocked!
I was about to say the same thing
+DrummingMethods he didnt play it just like jh bonham cause he cant.he played it without emotion thats why bonham will be always one step in front of any drummer.
kostas pap Bonham showed what is possible on drums not impossible. Quit believing in drum gods and know that you too can achieve what your heart desires. +kostas pap The only person who can play like john bonham is john bonham.
+Joe Nelson go look up bonzoleum on youtube, you are wrong.
Sorry Mike.. I know it has been 7 years .. I just now saw this.. You have always been at the top of my list for KICK ASS drum Guru's Since I first heard Images and Words Summer of '92!! You Rule Dude!!!!
When your modern day favorite drummer covers your most influential drummer...drummers know what I mean.
You're exactly right dude
As a drummer for 43 yrs I had a good time watching this, Mike has a great time playing some old school and the rest had a great time, good to see them playing the stuff I grew up on, and they kinda made it there's, that's cool 👍 that's what music is all about having fun,and keeping it real, great job.
Impressed at how well Mike knew the live version. Very cool!
Its Mike Portnoy.....what do you expect?
RIKLASVEGAS his memory is something from another planet.
@@philipefernandesdossantos7175 🤣👍 100% agre enough to take a look to his tabs...🥴🥴🤣
He really doesn't know the live version that well. Portnoy really hasn't picked up John Bonham's live playing much. There's tons of bootlegs out there of this song and Bonzo played it much more relaxed and smoother than Portnoy could ever play it.
As always a stellar performance! I never get tired of watching Mike... And I'm not a drummer. He's such an amazing musician!
As of today, 192 drummers think they can play exactly like Bonham...
Even so, they will NEVER be invited to play at the Bonzo's Birthday Bash !
I saw this live last night. My ears are still ringing. Mikey handled this song like a boss! Great time and great show!
Are they still ringing now?
Awesome job , makes me laugh reading some of the comments of the mockers. Thanks for posting Mike. Wish I could of been there. Love the drum cam! Thanks for looking out for us drum geeks. So nice to see the view from the back!!
amazing singer!
Portnoy is playing (very well) Bonzo's version from The Song Remains The Same...great memory of all the random fills Bonham would throw about!
I'm not a drummer, not a musician, I dig the old school, and this shit kicks ass!!
fucking A
My favorite drummer/inspiration is Keith Moon, but I've gotta say Mike Portnoy is easily one of the most SOLID and DYNAMIC drummers I've ever seen.
Mike did a whole Keith moon tribute tour check it out.
I love watching guys play songs like this. The time signatures, speed up and slow downs, all kinds of shit in this. Mike is great drummer and so fun to watch
Awesome! Fabulous! Love it! Thank you.
Mike Portnoy cleverly played and enjoyed the song showing respect to Bonham. Excellent.
Ok as a drummer of almost 20 years the "no feel" comments are the most ignorant comments Ive ever heard and Ive heard this said about Portnoy and other drummers I love many times before. Todd Lavigne This is a setup, right? You are joking, right? If not, the comparing shit is extremely foolish.
+tolvarr He has to be joking April 1st?
Ken Reid If he had made the comment on April 1st.
Pretty darn great!
Nobody can match Bonzo's style exactly but Portnoy played it incredibly.
6:10 they even imitate the Bonzo and Jonesy from the MSG film:')
LucianDrummer I was about to say the same, ahaha.
LucianDrummer they having so much fun
I was going to say precisely that. :)
that was awesome attention to detail, loved it
Damn, one of my favorite drummers playing a cover of my favorite drummer playing one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Tasty.

"""" I'm no DT fanboy,"""" ,,,me too,,,,,,you're right though
when I saw him play for twisted sister after their drummer died, a tear came to my eye when I saw him ripping that shit up with the biggest grin.
i agree
Please, mentioning Buddy in the same breath as this guy OR Peart is just wrong.
It's so weird seeing him behind a normal set
Caleb Mathis define normal
it's not a normal set. it's a bonham setup
I would rather see a drummer on a simpler kit and show what he can do than banging on 25 roto toms
Mike has a normal setup.
@doug marcus I agree. This is probably my favorite Mike Portnoy vid. I’m not really the biggest fan of him. But he played this perfectly.
love that they did the stare and head nod jonesy and bonzo did on the rendition of this song on The song remains the same
Bravo Portnoy you did a hell of a job right there.
"Bonzos birthday bash" great bootleg from 5/31/73. Loved the cartoon artwork on that one! Gonna have to dig that out and blow the dust off the ancient B&O turntable now. Great tribute Mr. Portnoy, done.
idk why people see no feel. you can totally see him totally feeling it.
You can, they can't. They dunno how to look for it, that's why ;)
im a drummer myself i can tell :)
It is simply not "no feel" Nate. We are observing subtleties that aren't glaringly apparent to the average "punter"..
Wow that was phenomenal!!!!!
This guy's amazing. As difficult as this is for most people, for Mike it's easy compared to what he normally plays or used to play with Dream Theater.
I still find it amazing how hard a great drummer works and yet makes it look effortless.
no groove? He honestly actually played identical to how Bonham played off The Song Remains The Same dvd, fills, gong hits, single bass triplets. I've been playing for 11 years..started with led zeppelin and this is one of the best covers of the extended version dazed and confused i've ever heard.
agreed.
I think other than Portnoy, Peart would be the only one to give a true, respectful tribute to Bonham, as they have both done in the past.
Ninja Flips No, no, no, no, no Peart is a good technical drummer but he does not have the feel to play Bonham's drum parts. Also Peart never played behind the beat. Great job. Wow. The rolls from the 11:55 mark are epic. Single bass drum. Shit that's nuts.

It's a Natal kit. Tuned nothing like Bonham's Ludwig. So you aren't missing anything.
+64blip seriously? Natal? never heard of... i thought i was Ludwig...on other videos arent Ludwig?
really nice to hear some of the Zeppelin era appropriate motifs in there. when I read the title of the video, I was expecting something very different and terrible lol

I thought Sebastian Bach singing was great too
No he didnt yell at the crowd so it wasnt Bas..
Thats not Sebastian Bach
That's Chas West
Not enough hair spinning to be Bach
This sounds amazing 🤩. I’m so impressed by these drums 🪘 it’s perfect!
Let it GO, Jason. Quit down voting. Your Dad would approve.
This song has gone for ages, I really enjoyed listening while doing other shit, awsome, thx for putting this on You tube
6:15. In loving memory
ottimo Portnoy !..cantante un po meno..
Wow what a song .
People will nitpick anything they can. I thought he did a damn good job. It sounds very similar to the live version on SRTS.
He played the Bonzo style kit, and had the same old fee as Bonham used to. I don't know why on earth some of you think it's a crappy performance, but I guarantee none of you would play a 13 min song like this any better, so sit down and shut the F up!
because they can't understand the musicality of it.....the end
Wow Mike, amazing as usual. I really like how you blend your feel into the original movement of songs (meaning whatever cover you play). Simply inspiring sir!!!
Pretty good effort from all involved. This is about the closest you're likely to get to seeing Zep live.
I suppose it's all relative. My own money would be on one of the many Zep tribute bands. This sounded nothing like Led Zeppelin.
Kickass drumming!!!!!
love the sound of the kit ,though the cymbals needed to be bigger & stronger
They are big enough, it's the way he hits them.
*****
24" 2002
+Viihta Bonham liked the 20"
it's got to be the microphones,or lack there of, because the HH sounds good
waqqodonkey I think it’s a mic from mike’s gopro.

"Greatest" .......................most popular, sure.
Mike B just shut up.
beatlemania54 I agree with you.. I was waiting for the broke triplet feel which was signature to most zeppelin songs.
TheWirthlessGaming---Your exactly right. That's what I missed too. Peace Brother!!!
TheWirthlessGaming he did that
when I see some playing of Led Zeppelin drums I'm never critical because I've never seen someone play with the same level of power and smoothness of Bonzo, but here, I see the power of Bonham, playing on a similar timbre to his. Which is a plus. Best Bonzo cover I've ever seen until now.
Why did he mute the cymbal at 1:42? He didn't even hit it.
IN-DEED. Struck me also immediately.
He probably originally meant to hit it and then mute it, but decided not to at the last second. However, he forgot to tell his left hand that. I've done stuff like that before.
Maybe it's some visual signal the band had agreed on? He immediately makes eye contact with the bass player
its a timing thing
Ash Hudson
It's called a "brain fart"
I love the sound of this kit!
He destroy it :(, he never got the intention of Dazed and Confused, sad
I am 61 and English, so grew up with all the major rock and prog rock groups. Bonzo’s style was unique and legendary, but in different ways so was Pink Floyd, Rush etc. Mike Portsoy is a master and can cover all the different styles to perfection.

Both Mike Portsoy and Mike Mangini are phenomenal drummers.
He fucked up the legendary triplet/reverse fill @ 10:01 , but still a great performance
Fredrik Hole Ulla it wasn't terrible
I am not a huge Portnoy guy to be honest but Bonham is my favorite ever and Mike actually did the best tribute I can remember well him and Jimmy D’Anda from the bullet boys. Great stuff here!
Sounded good playing those paistes instead of sabian scrap metal
Dylan DeMartino hey another idiot fanboy , good job !!
Lets pretende that everybody in the world has money to buy paiste. Gavin Harrison, Larnell Lewis, Todd sucherman, Benny greb, Tony Roidster, Neil Peart, ALL of the arent Paiste endorsed. Please, dont be a fanboy
Sabian makes the best cymbals! :D
Mike can play anything and be... just Mike! Effortless performance, just beautiful!!!
great drummer but he clearly cant handle eating sno-cones.
AWESOME! Awesome job guys...
More technique than groove.. I heard no emotion
that's sickness of almost all tecnique drummers.... follow scheme/pattern, not feeling and heart
exactly..
What the hell? No emotion? Are you sarcastic?
..no I'm realistic ;-)
You must be kidding, right?
I think what he's saying is that it's easy enough to play through the songs, but to play them them with enough passion and feel in the way Bonham did requires a whole new level skill
Mike you are by far the top drummer of all you can play anything love that your playing paiste cymbals in this gig
Wanted to hear more of the singer honestly.
Awesome drummer, awesome bassist, awesome vocalist, off-time guitarist (since when has guitarists ever been on time?) Awesome band!
Nice work, MP!! This is a great tribute to the Masters.
He was playing it to honour one of the greatest drummers to ever live. Show some respect.
still pure awesomeness! you're my all time idol! keep rocking dude!
I've been playing PAISTE cymbals for nearly forty years. Rudes, 2002s, Signatures, Twenty Series, Sound Creations … Hell, I've even got some Alphas and I love them too!
this makes me very happy!
From the way they shine, looks just like it.
That was awesome mann :)
The ride and hi hats are the stars of that cymbal setup! gott love Paiste 2002s! :D
Mike Portnoy is one of the greatest rock drummers on the planet!!!!!!
It's one thing to cover a studio version, this live version was really well done!
you can totally tell the guys who really listened to Bonham growing up at these gigs. Portnoy kills it.
Man, doing the Bonham double rockin on the bass, the rolls........ Ahhh Portnoy is a Gem!!!!!!
A True Legend John Bonham, and Mike Portnoy a gGreat Drummer
One Word for this "GREAT". TY for posting , From: Drums are cool
J MetalSkinz Ray Luzier is a great drummer and wasted with Korn
I believe that's live version, from 'The Song Remains The Same' album, but actually, this live version it's almost 30 minutes!
Didnt not expect the whole live bit from the TSRTS version. That was fucking awesome
Perfect sound , mike amazing!!
Mike and Carey. Best of the current rock lot. Great musicians
Great job, Mike!
Excellent!!!! Mike is the Best!!!!
Awesome to see Mike Portnoy jamming on a small drumkit!
Very close to Bonzo's one.
He’s done a ton of tribute projects where he plays smaller kits including a zep tribute called Hammer of the Gods (not this one).
So this is like a 5 year old going to DisneyLand for the first time for portnoy right? Just being invited to honor your biggest influence with the music he influenced.... Super awesome!
Amazing! This guy nailed it!
Damn Portnoy F'N KILLS IT here!!! I love DT but the straight ahead balls to the wall drumming here is incredible!!!
