I just assumed that we were going with the quotes I was shown.

I just feel like with anything - construction, purchase order, etc... whatever changes to the original quote should be documented on a change order and signed off on by both parties. Did he specify the extra stuff or was it to be a surprise? If the latter, the cost should be on him.
Btw: I love my Mk7 gti. I’ve had VW‘s the last 20 years. I’ve got 90k on mine right now and bought a daily driver to keep the mileage down since I can’t afford an engine rebuild etc... so now I’m like “crap, I’d better take it for an inspection of the timing chain for stretch” and all that jazz. Luckily mine is dsg. I have suspension work done to it but detuned it after my mechanic told me some horror stories. These are so easy to get a lot of cheap power out of but they’ll bite you!
Good luck with the Tesla! I’m a bit jealous, I love those.

Without putting anyone down that 12k bill should have been explained by the shop through the process. You can’t say we’re gonna do x,y,z and not speak up about the additional cost. Both parties lacked communication. No one is saying the shop does bad work or is inefficient. However, if replacing with a stock motor is quoted around 7k they let their customer down by not explaining “extras”. I mean literally almost double. Did they charge you storage fees? The business side lacked the communication to the customer IMO.
Move on to RS3 and never look back BTW

    • @zeroelus

Yeah, those are my feelings and interpretation as well. I'm in another country and don't own a VAG product so I'd have no reason to have a beef with a shop I can't visit and from what was shown here, they seem like they do good work. But I can't see why they wouldn't clearly lay out something major like "hey we can do some extras to the car that we think you'll love, but that will add cost, you ok with that?" and also add a quote in there in writing. Heck maybe even throw a freebie in there since you've now got side projects going on (maybe they did, but that wasn't communicated clearly) and the process dragged on for a few months, probably longer than both parties where expecting.
A shame mis-communication can ruin a promising relationship, but that's the story of so many people, right? Hope both our boy here and VFC learn from this experience and improve.

Having modded and built a couple of P-car race cars (and dailies), you really did a fantastic job laying out the process, and your desires, and how it transformed the ride. I know you are getting a lot of comments about what the engine builder should or should not have communicated. It happened, and your transparency in the whole process will make all of us ask more questions in the future. Couple of lessons:
    1. A daily driver is not a track car. Unless you are willing to drop some cash. A track car could breaks often due to the stress and all other associated racing things. Because of that you will be out of a daily rider, since will be at the bay waiting for diagnostics, parts and mechanic time.
    2. An automaker expends millions of dollars in research and development, guaranteeing the 200+ thousand miles of driving. (With proper maintenance and care)
    3. Usually an aftermarket company develop a part base of theory. But they don’t have the millions to drop for research and development than an automaker, unless they are sponsored from the automaker.
    4. Shop labor cost money with or without fixing a vehicle.
After all a track car is an expensive hobby, usually just a money dumping toy. with some extra cash, best way. Get your daily from a dealership, then if you want the same car as a track get an used couple of years old from the same or previous generation. That way you know are part available, plenty of knowledge and forums post for it. having a couple of year old within the same generation will be a near seamless driving experience. Getting an older generation will be less money than the current generation.

That’s unfortunate that you got crankwalk. From the many posts I’ve read from those who have suffered from this on the MK7 GTI, every one of them has tracked their car at some point. Not sure if that is the issue, but I’m IS38 custom tuned on my MK7 GTI, and have had (2) DKM Stage 2 clutch kits on it with zero problems. I’ve never tracked my car. I know the DKM Stage 3 twin-disk has introduced crankwalk, as well as Southbend kits that hold up to 480+whp. Maybe between the tracking and the higher holding capacity clutch kits, that is what introduces crankwalk, but it’s hard to say.

Enjoyed your story. I have the same car with a DSG. I dont think you were taken for a sucker, nor do I think Zach was being completely transparent. There was a lot of time taken to diagnose the problem. The old engine had to be removed and inspected. There was labor for that, time looking for the block, storage cost, etc...Did you really think the original price quoted to install a used engine would be the same after all the labor that was put into attempting to rebuild the old engine? At the same time, Zach should have informed you that the total bill isn't going to be anywhere near what was quoted. The "extra" were extra charges. You were too nice to say that they ripped you off. You were struggling not to say it. Zach lost all creditability when you asked if the washer was replaced and he said "no". Why the "f" not?
In hindsight, would engine replacement + upgraded clutch washer be the least expensive and workable option? You can keep all your existing mods and not worry about crank-walk. I can only think of two reasons why that wasn't suggested. One, they wanted to bill for a bigger job. Two, they are not engineers and were not 100% certain why the washer broke.
You keep saying you want to push it to the limits. In this case, Stage 1 plus hard driving is pushing the washer to its limits. Let's be honest, is it VW's fault. Are mode guys and aftermarket part designers creating negative reliability to the brand? We can understand why manufacturers void the warranty after backyard "upgrades".
Performance upgrades are for the hobbyist, so expect bigger and more frequent repair bills. More power along with harder driving will naturally cause engines and other components to break faster. "Fun" comes at a price.

I've toyed with the idea of a track car and I would get one for track use only and set up for those road conditions. I hope it doesn't put you off and you still go ahead. Secondly, if they offer to add work you would assume they are doing for love not money, but in my experience ALWAYS ASK who is footing the bill for the extra stuff. Here endeth the lesson my son. When modding cars especially your daily driver a phrase that comes to mind is “don’t sh*t where you eat.” If you are able to, only mod your fun weekend car, keep your daily driver reliable so you don’t run into issues like this. But hey like you said you had to learn the hard way and that’s a good thing most times. No matter how much I enjoy my car, I’ve got a Tesla Model 3 and I enjoy it a lot, I never get so far involved to where it feels like a member of the family, and I consider myself a car enthusiast. It is a thing and is easily replaceable.

You need to run an oil cooler, better oil, and change it every 2000 miles, if you run a strong Pressure Plate, or this will happen with any manual that has thrust washers to center the crank. The pressure plate pulls too hard on the crank and eats the thrust washers, and then the caps. A fully built engine will NOT solve this problem, ask me how i know. You also need to keep an eye on your end play. You can do a visual inspection by pulling the pan, or you can hit the crank bolt in with a rubber mallet, and then the pry on the crank pulley with a screw driver between the pulley and the block to checkl for any movement. Replacing a trust washer is quick and cheap, but throwing away a fully built engine sucks big time.

Had my MK6 from 2014 to 2018 and it was a fantastic car and now I have a MK7 because I couldn't resist the itch. The MK7 is notoriously more reliable with people making it to 150k before doing a carbon cleaning and having engines that look about as bad as a MK6 at 50-70k.
There's more supporting mods if you wanted to go stage 2 and Humble Mechanic has a great video showing just how much you should expect to spend for stage 2 if you want to do it properly.
Any performance car is going to have risks especially if you drive it hard. I know people with WRX's who had to rebuild their engines within 120k miles and then there are people claiming they got above 150k with normal maintenance.
PS. I got to 115k on my MK6 driving it as a delivery driver with one summer averaging 19mpg because I was running performance tires and I was treating my deliveries like time trials...was fun as hell. Eventually I needed to do the timing chain and I had a small leak so maybe a head gasket and I toyed with the idea of doing that or trading it in and that's when I found the MK7 that I have now.
PSS. Yeah I was gonna guess crank walk it's a known issue.

You had given them the go ahead to rebuild the original engine. When they put the time in to strip the engine and determined that the block was damaged beyond repair you had decided to go with plan B and install a used engine. You being a mechanic know that they still have to get paid (labor) for the tear down of the shot engine. So yes the they were in the right for charging you more than what you expected. Now with that said the final bill should have been no more than $10,000 give or take a few hundred. They takeaway is a simple one - don’t fuck with the car. Keep things OEM. If you wanted a high performance you should have gotten the R.

However, the most mod friendly car out there with the biggest reward is hands down also the most feared car out there. Buick Grand National GNX. A little on the pricey side, compared to the base Grand National. Perhaps do a build not very common, like a 1966 GTO with a modern powerplant. Say a LS7 with 505hp. Wheeeee! Or, ya know, you could do a Syclone or Typhoon build, maybe a fox body, or even a C10. Lots and lots of options from back in the day.

So is the GTI, what happened here is a fluke, but you pay to play and when you start doing mods you take risks on any car when you mod it, especially doing ECU re tune's on Turbo Cars. What mods have you done to your BRZ to add 70 hp to? Probably nothing like that. That's why you have no problems. Keep in mind many people mod their GTI's and don't have this issue. How many STi's have blown motors when tuned? Think of it that way.

This is prettymuch why you just are better off paying a premium and getting the car you REALLY want in OEM fashioned even though it may mean a higher payment or initial cost. Giving up your time is what most don't measure when it comes to car modifications. I say bite the bullet and get the car you REALLY want rather than going heavy mods on one that will have a higher risk factor if it fails. Typically, or atleast in years past it used to be that japanese brands could take more abuse when it comes to being heavily modified. Best way is to get on forums and really research outcomes for prospective vehicles that you're considering and look at key failure points and then decide if the platform is worth modifying or not. Personally if it were me, going with any German brand vehicle, I'd just get the expensive version, LEASE it, run the piss out of it, then RUN away after 36 months.
