- In this video, my Volkswagen MK7 GTI is having some engine issues. Jimmy scans the codes on the GTI and we think it may be an oil pressure sensor, we bring it to local mechanic Automotivation to try and diagnose what is exactly is going on.

Just wanted to drop a comment on how good that mechanic’s communication and people skills are. Sometimes they get a bad rep but you can tell he goes about things the right way. Big thumbs up.
Brandon's professionalism is through the roof
He was awesome and would highly recommend him.
One hell of a professional every mechanic needs to take notes i dont work in the industry anymore but id work in this man's shop any day
Contact the Humble Mechanic on RUclips. He's the man when it comes to Volkswagens!
JV between the 2 channels..team work !!
I feel for you man. Love the channel. I just bought a ‘17 GTI as a weekend/track car and this is my biggest nightmare. Even being careful when buying a used car there are no guarantees. Good luck!
I've got a 17 GTI and same lol. I'm just hoping that as long as I put Motul or Liqui Moly in it every 5k miles I should be good
That is a very great price for that cambridge seal repair, Brandon is a beast.
I'm crying already and it's 30 seconds in
😂
Never seen your channel before but as soon as I saw low oil pressure I was like "Bet it's a manual!" Sure enough the manager hops in and you can see it's a stick. I haven't made it to the end of the video but I already know it has crankwalk. Did I hear upgraded clutch? Yup, that'll make it happen much faster. I'm not sure with the extensive accounts of this happening why anyone buys a MK7 with a stick.
Welcome to the channel!
... because it's better...
@@Cheo.M better at what going slower?
Good thing you know a guy that fixes salvage cars :)
So much is so wrong...DONT EVER DRIVE IT WITH LOW PRESSURE WARNINGS!! If its KNOCKING>>>DONT DRIVE IT!!!Put a pressure gauge on it and see what the pressure is..this requires pulling the sensor. After oil pressure is checked, drop the pan and look for foreign material in the pan or on the pickup tube...
Its called clutch chatter, due to the SMFW.
Nope, watch part two.
@@gpaje clutch chatter due to the southbend stage 2 clutch. I know what I'm talking about. I have one on my car.
@@eddiemk7418 They found the half crank thrust washer in the oil pan, I think we are talking about two different issues here. Watch part two. The crank is essentially moving around.
gpage you have no idea what you’re talking about
@@parhamdibajnia8048 Watch part two of his video so you can understand that I actually know more than you at this point. Spoiler Warning........His motor needs to be replaced, likely caused by the Southbend Stage 2 Clutch.
Loving this videos. Keep up the good work. These videos are helping me a lot.
So glad I fought and fought for my husband to not buy this car. Well I lost as you see but he lost too haha. And yes I saw that you said you love this car. I think we should just blow it up at this point, who’s with me? 🤣
You should have fought for the DSG. They don't have this issue.
Dirk he needs a Honda or something practical lol.
Blowing it up would be cheaper than fixing it. It'll also ensure that there will be no other problems long term......
My '18 GTI makes a similar sound that goes away when you depress the clutch. Sounds like the bottom end clanking around. I did an oil analysis with the first change and had metal and other issues, happy to compare notes if you want. I'll see what the upcoming second change looks like, but following cause of identical issues minus the oil pressure one.
Aftermarket clutch equaled bad thrust bearing. ???
Golf R time! Unfortunately you have to pay to play and accept the risk when you tune your car. I would just part it out and start off with a new R with a warranty. Also resist the urge to tune it. This video has reinforced my decision to not tune my Golf R. I came from a MK 7 GTI too and the stock R is plenty of power to have fun. Plus the engine is built in Europe with maybe better parts? (I have nothing to back that up with) Good luck whatever you decide to do.
Sorry to say this, but probably the best option is to get new engine. I think that will be cheaper than rebuilding this one (money wise).
You're a detailer, so why is you're steering wheel greasier than a Big Mac🤔
It is always BIG issue when TSi engine goes wrong and it cost a lot!
I worked at vw and we had a stage 3 gti come in. Same problem with the clutch chatter. Dude ended up replacing the motor, crank broke.
Sounds like the beginning of crank walk to me. All the best
Id def recommend throwing an oil catch can setup for the blow by.
Totally unnecessary if he’s not seeing lots of track use. The inline ones are almost always dry, and the PCV replacement ones (Racingline, Spulen) full you because the stock PCV valve has an oil separator so it just dumps in together.
Typical stick mk7 issues. Crank walk for days.
Does this happen on mk6 manual
Damn I’m in the same boat, have a 17 gti, timing guides went and jumped timing! And somehow oil pump went simultaneously! Now gotta check bearings too. The more I tear into it the more problems I find! It sucks! 😕
In all seriousness... That tech was seemingly legit!
I bet it’s crank walk jr14 had the same issues your having maybe alil worse on his car but vary similar
@Chicago Auto Pros - when is part 2 dropping?
Saturday morning.
Seeing things like this kind of worries me. Just picked up my first GTI a month ago. 2020. I’m hoping I can get many, many years out of it.
Then don't mod it!
Chicago Auto Pros So far my plan is to at least make it a year without tuning but that stage 1 is always tempting haha!
Mine is a 2017 autobahn, traded in a 2016 SE under lemon law due to rust through the paint on the roof. Didn’t deter me from VW as all manufacturers have lemons. I change my oil every 5k, I know they recommend every 10k but the oil in my 2016 was black at 7k miles and I don’t drive mine hard. Once you get this sorted I would highly recommend more regular maintenance. Especially since your car is tuned , this would help immensely with longevity.
Almost 50k miles no issues whatsoever
@@HotHatchHero I also had zero issues at 50k. The issue was not maintenance here. Watch part two.
First mechanic sounds like a total air head so unprofessional, second guy explained it better than anyone else could!
First "mechanic" was his front desk manager at the detailing shop just helping him do some DIY diagnostics.
Chatter on the clutch is the throw out bearing.
Sooo sad man. Basically the engine blow. Oil on the spark plug chamber 😱.
You have to clean that shiny steering wheel
awwwww dude im gutted for you, they can be a cruel mistress at times
Vw what can i say.. peoples car so cant be that great. Here is ausie land there are few of them around. When they work they are good but more often they have engine issues. And that is not just gti, we had the super and turbo 1.4l in lower end models. What a disasters that was after 4 to 5 years. Also the reason why i dont buy Audi's.. same issues.
I have a later prodctn model 17' manual, bought new. Guess I won't be getting it modded🤦🏾♂️
That’s what I’m thinking man there are hundreds of problems. Terrified to do anything
Cam cradle reseal is about $1k in labor BTW. Anyone who says it's a simple job doesn't know this car.
No warranty? Didnt you get the car from dealership?
I believe the tune on the car voided the warranty.
@@domiggy4455 cant take the tune off and set it back to stalk? But damn.. sucks.
@@ajjax89 Once you tune your car, your VIN is flagged through VW. He could always try it anyway. I just recently went stage 2 on my 2018 gti. I'm going off of what I've read from numerous sources.
It's over the mileage for warranty.
@@ChicagoAutoPros oooouch!!! :/
Lol, why would you tell him to take notes of the codes, just take a picture of the snap on screen.
Wow 539 just to tell you take it to a pro?
Mo powha bebe !!
Add an oil catch can
Sry but the one at Auto pros doesn’t have a real plan what he’s talking about
Sell it...and get a Honda.
That mechanic sucked Jason. Scotty would’ve been able to fix it. Of course he would’ve said whoever u bought that car from beat it up and that u paid too much cuz VW really don’t have any resale value.
He also would’ve said that VW r endless money pits and rolling piles of junk as they age.
If I were u I’d tow it to Houston and u can say u have ur car fixed by Scotty.
This is why I don’t go to mechanics, they will ream u seven ways to Sunday.
Vws have good resale and are reliable so stop blindly listening to a senile old man
First mechanic ripped you off
$539 and they didn't even conclusively fix anything?!? Go on vwvortex and get a recommendation for a good shop near you.
Diagnosis of that nature isn't free. "It was more than just an oil change, they did a pressure test and installed the new plugs."
10:11, hehehe
Wow this guys has no idea what he's talking about lmfao. The oil pressure sensor is located in an area that sees oil pressure, crankcase pressure isn't gonna make it leak oil out of the sensor threads.
It's a WV what did you expect
This problem will cost you around 5.000-8.000 $
Common VW problems
“20 dollar scan tool I paid 2,000 more for”. Eh not quiet but yeah SnapOn charges your the premium of warranty and tool truck service. But you buy a 20 dollar Amazon special scanner and compare it to your SnapOn scanner you’ll see the differences real quick
It's a VW what do you expect
11:41, not hard to pronounce, it isn't "ahdi" its "owdi" I'd expect better from a mechanic
Thank you for documenting this process. I have 15' GTI manual. This is like the worse case scenario for a first time vw owner. My car has 85,000 on the odo, and Ive been so meticulous with services. I really hope this experience doesn't sway you away from GTI jason!
Keep it original and it will outlast many other cars, even if you beat it. Just service it. 2.0 TSI is a workhorse, but dont go past stage one
@@danielfl.9347 I have 2017 Jetta gli . So don’t go pass stage 1? I wasn’t going to anyway
@@elijahwest99 Yeah I would say to avoid it. The engine is very strong, but people tune them too much.
Just keep service OK and enjoy it
@@danielfl.9347 your saying avoid tuning all together and enjoy stock or avoid anything over stage 1
@@elijahwest99 Do not go over Stage 1+ (remap + exhaust + air filter).
my GTI was consuming a bunch of oil took it to the stealership and they said it needed a new engine of course i gave them the finger and walked out
With any vehicle that you like sucks when things start breaking down when you take care of it. I feel you Jason brother man!!
Great you know someone who is an expert in it.
Xoxo from Puerto Rico 👍🇵🇷
sounds a lot like JR14's experience with his manual MK7. might have crank walk my friend
500 dollars for oil change holy moly. I think they found no metal but gold
It was more than just an oil change, they did a pressure test and installed the new plugs.
hasn't anyone done a compression/leakdown test on the oily cylinder?
I skipped over the mechanic because he was just making guesses. I'm at the end. Go ahead and add a zero onto that final bill. Sorry man.
You know this mechanic (not a technician) knows nothing when he spends more time talking then looking at the car. 600$ bill for him talking for 30 min plus an oil change, what a rip off.
Dirk same here. I knew he was gonna get ripped off by him
It would've been fine if he could actually fix it instead of sending him on his way to a VW specialist. If you know nothing about VW why did you even wasted his time
Alex Shnaider exactly. U hit on the nail. Right off the bat, he knew he couldn’t fixed it and still bs him for $600
Oh, look. Another EA888 with an aftermarket clutch and crank walk. Time to find another engine.
I’m new to them I’m assuming this is ongoing? What factors are in play, just aftermarket clutch?
@@ENSYYSNE Look on VWVortex. Stock clutch is rare, but has happened, aftermarket clutch, it's not an if but a when. Very rare for DSG cars.
@@acefighterpilot that is total horse shit. There have been a TINY amount of cars that this has happened to…
Sorry man...., It is GTI, and it is NOT made in Germany with Germans precision. If you want sophisticated midgrade German cars, get it that it is still made in Germany. Get simpler robust design cars that everyone in the planet can built it right like Toyota, Honda, or Mazda. Or at least with much less sophisticated things like Skoda (cheaper VW).
At 8:00 Jimmy was so right, that was never right on the clutch noise. You have one flywheel and one clutch plate making contact. Oh what a learning curve this one turns out to be!
Duuuude, I’ve had THE EXACT SAME issue with my MK5 GTI my hats off to you bro I’m on my second engine
Mechanical problems with a German car... not surprised. Sad this happened to a good person.
German cars are only good too lease. 4 years, 60k, move one. After that, money pits... 🥴
Sorry Jason, I do hope you get the best outcome possible out of this 👍
Lmao the rape on shop labour is real
This truly sucks. I have a DSG MK6 APR stage 2. A month ago I got a CEL and thought I had fixed it by replacing the PCV. Nope, turns out the rear main seal needed to be replaced. And two years before that I had to replace the DSG mech unit. $$$$.
Its called NVH for the Single Mass Flywheel, chatter is normal. Same happens when you install dogbone to tighten up transmission and motor. Install a harmonic damper crankshaft pulley from fluid ampr to limit NVH
Never hold your foot on or above the clutchpedal while driving! Put your foot next to pedal after shifting. Leaning on the pedal will cause your clutch to slip.
Same thing happened to my 15 GTI the day after I got it from the dealership. Luckily it was under dealer warranty. Ended up replacing the engine.
Built motor is the way
Built engine isn't going to address crank walk.
Ja Sun find a better build company
@@ryandake2450 you have any to suggest?
Ja Sun Try Integrated Engineering. Based out of Utah I believe
@@ryandake2450 I personally know of 3 people with defective engines from them.
Is the knocking a Knackered flywheel?
single mass flywheel
@@dirk5950 possibly I had a smf in one of my cars and it chattered on idle👍
My vw cc with a similar 2.0 tsi engine blew after oil pressure issues I feel your pain!
My 1994 cobra makes the same noise with the clutch. I have a firewall adjusters that i believe has fixed the issue. But it may be a bad throw out bearing.
Dang man, this really sucks to see, I would be so upset😔
My guess...clogged pickup tube..
Did I just hear valve cover or oil sensor as involved, labor intensive? Um, no.
thrust washer
I wont hit the like bottom on this! Hope your GTI get well soon ✌️
Hey man I've been trying to get ahold if you
The video has a sad theme to it 😢. You truly love this car.
Привет, капиталочка
lets check maybe there is an metal in oil.....oh no...let's take it for a spin!!! Where did you get this diagnostic guy from?.... sorry, but for it looks he doesn't know how even car works!! My subjective opinion
That mechanic was so cool!
You never know when you buy!
'There's oil in it....'
I had this same issue with my mk6 GLI. Wondering which engine code/variant you have... there’s no campaign or TSB that I can find directly addressing this on yours. But, hopefully you took it to a legit dealer. Don’t get me wrong Jimmy seems great! But.... yeah... You da best Jimmy! Haha
Just kidding Jimmy! 😁
There’s oil in it! Haha 😄
There’s oil in the plug/coil cylinders too
As they say,
OPE!
typical vw...
If the car is a '15 model year, specifically an early production car, it is almost a 100% chance the crank thrust bearing failed. This results in crank walk and poor oil pressure. The engine will need to be replaced or rebuilt. If you have under 60k miles, the engine should still be eligible for warranty coverage.
Yeah, I'm at 69,000. 😣
@@ChicagoAutoPros Really bad luck, sorry for you. But it shows how good VW is with crunching numbers.
Do you have an aftermarket clutch on it? Those have been thought to exacerbate crankwalk. If it is CW and stock clutch, you may still be able to get some help from VW on a "goodwill" basis towards the repair, even out of warranty. Especially for an outspoken RUclipsr. Good luck.
@@dddon513 Yes is has a southbend stage II clutch.
