  • LIM Innovations and other startups are pushing the designs of prosthetic sockets, creating modular and adjustable versions that are more comfortable than the traditional mold-based variety for many patients.

    I am a Director & Artist Photographer. My whole life revolves around traveling and capturing the beautiful things in life. I came to realize the extent of the discomfort on my distal end of the limb, aggravated by walking days on end with little time out of the socket and searched for an alternative. I found LIM's Infinite Socket and sought about getting fit. From the moment I tried it on, everything changed! My confidence was boosted to new heights and I wanted to walk everywhere; the comfort and control I had over my gait was impressive. With a few clicks of the ratchet the brim was tight around my limb, and I could walk endlessly with the suction supporting my every stride. I have had many sockets over the years, but the dynamic structure of the Infinite Socket was able to provide me comfort beyond comparison.

    my knees started hurting when they said that you can get a prosthetic drilled in the bone. eek.

    This is the kind of video I love to see you guys make. It shows a cool and less known technology and sparks an interest and emotion in the viewers, as opposed to a select few other videos where you guys seemingly only share your opinions on a topic or technology. Keep up the good work and I'd love to see more videos like this one!

    I didn't expect the Verge to report on topics like these, but this was a well-made video/documentary.

    I was always obsessed with prosthetics, not sure why. Great news :)

    I’m loving this video as a recent 1 year Amputee coupled with a left side 20 year Stroke recovery. i have multiple issues in finning and achieving gait agility

    its kinda sad how little views this is getting. Very good job Verge.

      there was only 4,000 views when I watched it. glad its getting more attention but 25,000 still isn't the best numbers for a channel with over 1 million subs.

      TheGai could only be someone thats not an amputee. Every video i watch almost brings me to tears. Im a BK amputee now for 7 months and ive had my leg for 4 months and its hard to get back to that level of fitness.

    It's a bit funny how Ghost in the Shell so optimistically set itself in the year 2029. We're getting there, but there's still a lot of work to do.

    Osseointegration is where things should go eventually, but it's good to see developments on all fronts.

    isn't the vibration a huge risk with those prosthetics that are directly drilled into the bone? This because there is no suspension at all?

    The vibration feedback he talked about:
    Stick some velostat inside his shoes, connect it to a arduino or something, code the arduino to control a vibrator motor (which is strapped on his residue limb), Boom! Problem solved!

    • @Psychlopic
      @Psychlopic 8 лет назад

      +Rexus King Not really. It would be like a Vibration controller simulating simulating a punch. They don't nearly enough granular vibration control and sensitivity to replace actual limbs.

    • @RexusKing
      @RexusKing 8 лет назад

      +AerrowDynamics Of course! But! he already lost his actual limbs, and seems to be reluctant to do the osseointegration surgery. So, I was proposing a much cheaper and simpler way to provide a sort of haptic feedback for him.

    • @Psychlopic
      @Psychlopic 8 лет назад

      Rexus King Yes, but I don't think it would actually be as useful as you might think it is, even given the difference in cost

    • @RexusKing
      @RexusKing 8 лет назад

      Oh well :)
      I just think this might be a cool idea to try out. Maybe you even use different force or vibration frequency to represent different levels of impact force?

    I'm an amputee and all for advancement. Issue is, insurance companies aren't. I need a new socket and suspension system. Cigna has denied me 3 times. I don't get excited anymore about new systems. It's usually the rich or military vets that get the fancy prosthetics.
