- This Patagonia fleece jacket was too good to pass up at the thrift store but it was too big and needed resizing. Follow this step by step tutorial on how to properly alter an article of clothing. Start honing your upcycling sewing skills in this brave new world where eco-fashion and repurposing second hand quality clothing are absolutely essential!
In the video I go through the detailed process of taking the jacket completely apart. I resize the pieces and then reassembling the entire coat, including putting in a new zipper for as professional, tailored, well-fitting a look as possible.

Once you started cutting into the jacket I was hooked! I’mpretty sure I said out loud “well there’s no turning back now! Get out the 🍿” And then I had to watch till the end 😂

it’s easy to make it smaller. I want to know how to make a jacket bigger by a size or two. I was hoping this video would show that.
Hello, to make a jacket (or anything) bigger you will need to add material, under the arms is the usual area and at the waist to lengthen. I’ll try and make a video specific to that alteration. Thanks!

Is it best to just cut all the seams to take apart a jacket? Or can i seam rip everything? Cutting makes me so nervous but I need to resize a mens small to a womens small simple fleece jacket.
You should have plenty of fabric to just cut the seams if you’re going from a men’s large to a small- just cutting would save time too.
How much would this kind of job cost at a trailer/ alterations business?
I have no idea but I’m guessing with the hours that it took me… probably pretty expensive. It was definitely a labor of love with an emphasis on upcycling high quality garments you already own.
So hot water and the dryer wouldn't work?
Maybe if the jacket was wool but then again you can’t really control how wool will shrink- you might end up with a kid sized article of clothing. This jacket wouldn’t shrink no matter how many times you used the dryer and hot water.

You should try it! Start with cutting up and resizing a shirt you don’t care about- you will learn a lot as you go. Gain the sewing confidence you need with the practice then go for it!
How long did it take you to complete the jacket?
@@lillyling3063 well... when you film something it takes about 50x longer. 😅 Filming aside, it all depends on you experience, skill level, distractions, other duties, focus etc. With nothing standing in the way it probably took me about 5 hours (picking out a zipper is long, tedious work). But as you can see- it’s all worth it and very soon you forget the work and only remember the reward of a well fitting garment!
