Physical media comeback?! Why I’m collecting Blu-rays in 2024 + unboxing

  • Physical media's back, baby! Though it never actually left, many of us were happy to let go of the burden of owning media to simply paying monthly to stream it. Lately though, with so many studios pulling shows left and right-and the price of streaming platforms skyrocketing-many are turning back to creating a permanent collection of DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray movies, shows and more. Here are my pros and cons-and stick around for an unboxing of Succession: The Complete Series, The Zone of Interest, and Ted Lasso. Thanks for watching!
    I purchased every item shown in this video. All shade/opinions are my own ;)

    I got back into bluray because of the video / audio quality (as well as the extras) and also 99% of the films I enjoy are just not readily available on any of the streaming platforms (perhaps in some obscure corner of Amazon prime) so I can now watch a lot of my favourite 60s and 70s films and TV shows. I must admit blurays does mean I intend to go off into things such as Giallo or Hammer or Tigon films etc so can be expensive. It can get a little out of hand. Some of the packaging is pretty hopeless for blurays, the disks often are impossible to move or they fall out too easily. I agree, they could make them even more visually impressive. I like the 4Ks coming with blurays as well, always great as a backup

    I’ve jumped back into collecting physical media .
    Not paying for streaming anymore.
    I think covid was the reason streaming took off .
    But with internet not stable I prefer to watch my blu rays and dvds now

    I had a huge DVD collection, but paired it down with my BluRay collection. I made a list of the top 50 films that i love and want to rewatch over and over.
    I miss the days of going to BestBuy and Tower Records and browsing the DVD’s and CD’s. I also miss the days of Blockbuster Video and renting a movie.

    Just like I found out - at some point you will run out of space and then Apple or some other online service becomes that much more convenient. Apple is actually quite good in terms of quality and I'm surprised more people don't purchase through them.

    A problem i am seeing with new 4K releases is too much detail and image manipulation using "A.I." which alters the original. I prefer Blu-ray myself, 4K only seems necessary if you have larger screens (50" plus).

    I've missed seeing you and your uploads! I got into collecting DVDs of my ult faves a few years back once I noticed not every season is available through streaming sites. Total buzzkill when trying to binge watch...I'm also trying to be mindful of what I get so it's quite a curated collection atm.

    Can't imagine being born into a world of streaming🤔Always been physical; from VHS to DVD to Bluray to 4K. It's not making a "comeback", it's always been there. There's a reason it's never gone away, people like ownership (loaning, selling, gifting stc).

    Over here all local distributors have stopped releasing physical content, and the worst thing... it's not available digitally either (not for streaming, not for buying on Apple Store / Prime). Many shows I'd like to see are 'not available in my country' (fan of EU / British crime shows). It's driving me crazy....

    I've been collecting dvd/bluray since 2008 and don't plan on stopping. I don't trust digital collecting or streaming, any streaming service could just remove your favorite show or movie at anytime without explanation, not to mention censorship issues arising.

    Agree with everything! I’ve been going back and collecting my favorite movies physically too. I really regret giving them up for streaming now.
    But you definitely can’t collect everything and streaming has it’s place for that.

  • @TheWisestWizards

    The main pro is owning a collection that has value. You can sell it, loan things out to friends. Digital purchases are like flushing money down the drain, it's worth nothing at all, and there's a good chance someday the studios will find a way to steal it from you.

      Don’t forget, back in the mid ‘00s almost everyone was buying DVDs

    Nothing beats physical media. But it’s getting too expensive for me because we don’t have any stores that still sells them in my country , even online! So I have to import everything and it’s really not an ideal situation. Physical media is actually dead in Saudi arabia. People have completely went to streaming.

    Same. One other issue is versioning. To get the original cut of Amadeus recently for an anniversary write-up, I had to get an old flipper DVD through ebay as no current release includes the original edit. Similar applies to Apocalypse Now, The Exorcist (though that was recently redeemed with a 4K), The Tin Drum and so many more as tampered versions of films replace rather than augment the originals. Oh, on Star Trek, if you get it on blu-ray you can choose the original effects rather than the CG interpolations. Thanks for this video, you make some essential points.

    • @cubsfan-l9x
      @cubsfan-l9x День назад

      You can't get the original cut of Apocalypse Now anymore? Is that not the 1979 Original? Both my Blu-rays have that.

    • @peterjetnikoff
      @peterjetnikoff День назад

      @@cubsfan-l9x You can but you have to pay for an expensive edition to get it. Maybe it's different where I am (Australia) where the BD and 4Ks only have the Final Cut. My point was more about the limits on versions. In the 2000s the only version you could buy new was Redux.

      4K can be worth it depending on if it's a new and better master vs a previous Blu-ray release. With newer movies, I would agree that there is very little difference.

      @@andrewholmes3133 Why is it your first choice? I just don't see the point to buying many of these movies, again, for yet a third or fourth time. I likely already bought it once on DVD, then again on Blu-ray, sometimes a second time for a remastered Blu-ray, now they want me to buy something again in 4K? This is why I have switched to Apple. Free 4K upgrades and the quality is actually quite good. I have not lost anything I have bought directly through them. On top of that, companies can't seem to make 4KBD players that are worth a crap, they all freeze, and the discs are nearly always scratched.
