Fantastic video! When these 45-50 year old DC-10's are retired for good, this will become a brilliant historical piece. Kids born now will never see these beauties in the air! Great job!
The L-1011 Tristar was one of the most underrated aircraft ever to be put into production. Right off the of my head, I can't recall any Tristar crashes the were not due to Pilot error. Eastern flight 401 was due to Pilot error and Delta flight 191 was due to a windshear microburst. Now the DC-10 was a totally different story, that thing has killed more people than smallpox, most notably the rear cargo door on Turkish Airways flight 581 and the # 2 forward engine fan disk on United flight 232. How Captain Al Haynes and instructor Pilot Captain Denny Fitch even came close to the Sioux City airport, was a miracle in itself. To this day, there's still never been any other Pilot's that have even come close the airport in a simulator. That monstrosity should have been scrapped and turned into soda cans decades ago.
Yes, Definitely Agree. The L-1011 TriStar was way Ahead of the DC-10, when it came to technology, and the #2 Engine Placement using the "S Duct" design was way more Attractive Looking than doing what Douglas did and just stuck it in the middle of the Rudder. The Lockheed L-1011 was Far Superior compared to the DC-10. Just listen to all the Pilots that have flown it. I don't recall ever hearing anything negative said about it.
L1011 is one of my favorite jets of all time. Back when a company would make the best possible product regardless of the accountants. The DC-10 was rushed to come out first and won the battle but was full of problems that cost lives. The worse product won, but in my mind, the L1011 would always be the winner because it was the superior product and every single person who flew both planes have agreed.
Guillermo Serra my wife used to work ticket counter for Continental Airlines and once saw a 747 leave LAX to go to Hawaii with an engine strapped to the top of wing. Kind of cool I always thought. Bill
tristars were way ahead of their time, gorgeous planes with beautifully sounding RR engines. I also love DC-10's, I grew up flying in those and 747-100's as a kid.
RAF its standard practice specially at Brize Norton to carry out touch and goes all day long no matter what aircraft it is...my son used to spend days doing touch and goes in his C17 Globemaster 2
MrPLC999 did he fly for TWA cause in 1983 May 11th at JFK and I seen a bunch of L 1011s in the TWA terminal I flew on 747 to Frankfurt Germany love there pothole ships of third engine from the 727s and how they had the rear wheels set look cool dc10s had two wheel middle looked kinda out of place
No he flew for Eastern and retired in 1983. Piloted B-17 in WW2. (See Swamp Fire on Facebook. He is on the far right of the top photo.) Signed with Eastern in 1952. Flew DC-7, Electra, DC-8, 727 and L-1011.
MrPLC999 I have a 'ear' for engines, would be able to tell, the difference, of a DC10, from, anL1011, even without seeing them. Live close to KEWR, so depending on winds, many pass over, but you can tell,,by how high, in the early evenings,,ant thing going NORTH, is EUROPE BOUND, if outside, see LH, AF, SWISS, VIRGIN , and few others.
Thank you Leighton. Dad was a faithful father and a true patriot and I do miss him. I rode jumpseat with him several times in the 50's and 60's on Connie out of Newark while growing up in Watchung. Loved those Wright 3350s!
It's not easy to tell but I think perhaps he was coming in too high, his touch down would have been too far forward, so he got his three holes outta of there. I've been on a Delta 727 landing in Phoenix that had to cancel a landing due to a runway excursion, the other case landing at the same airport in a 757, the airport reversed the landing pattern from the usual East to West to west to east, that one was the most exciting, a sudden move from nose down to nose up, flight attendant holding onto seat backs and armrests to avoid being tossed around. We went to 3000 ft immediately then got in the traffic pattern from 6000 ft, headed north, 180 degree turn. I've never had that happen before or since. TWA and Delta had the TriStar, American, United, Continental, Northwest had the DC.-10s, it wasn't all that easy to ride in a TriStar since St Louis and Atlanta were not places I flew to often. Best biggie ever made.
I wish the L1011 would have had the success it deserved. It’s still a marvel and genius feat of innovation and engineering. Though I am fond of the DC-10 & MD-11, the L1011 will always be my favorite. I also wish Lockheed was still in the commercial aviation market, but the bad luck with setbacks on the L1011 engines, etc. pretty well sealed their fate. Beautiful footage of a beautiful plane!
More than half of this video shows the DC-10 (or related) models, so the title is misleading. The easy way to tell the difference is that the DC-10 series has the center engine exhaust in line with the engine intake up on the vertical stabilizer, whereas the L-1011 has the center engine intake up high but the exhaust is at the rear of the fuselage.
Plus the engines are much closer in on the DC-10, and overall it's pig-ugly in comparison to the L-1011. Putting them in the same video shows this even more obviously than usual.
I was a ARFF firefighter at BWI and we would train with ATA with their L1011 (I love that aircraft) when ever they were in town. ATA was founded by a firefighter. Sad to hear that airline went under later on
The Royal Dutch Air Force plane is a KC-10 tanker. USAF also has them. KC-10 bombers are currently being used in Arizona to fight wild fires up north near Prescott.
The go around isn't always because of a problem. Many pilots make their final approach with the option to land or go around. They do have to practice certain things, after all. Thanks for your good video
L1011 was the superior jet. Better engineered and more refined and that S-Duct! Having said thatr I always love to see the local FedEx MD-11 fly over with its more rear mounted heavily swept main wing.
In 1989 is was in a BWIA L1011-500 when it had to do a go around at JFK and it felt as if the whole plane was going to fall apart , It rattled shook and vibrated something awful
It looks like a DC-10....The top engine on the L1011 went into the back fuselage area of the aircraft...Were are the DC-10s, those engines were clearly mounted in the back tail....Those two aircraft are great planes... Eastern Airlines flew the L1011 and our airline United had the DC-10s..
@@kendallevans4079 No sir, it was planned for their SEA run. Seattle was the reason they leased their plane. Even as a kid, I thought WHY? They're killin' it in the So. Cal market, WTF? Through quite a few challenges, including market forces, they eventually folded. Bud built himself a great airline.
@@hgr4255 Oh...I see. I still fly up to SJC although from SNA almost weekly. Although it's hard to compete with Southwest for hopping around the western states now.
Notice at the end of the video the runway safety car pulls onto the runway after the L1011 takes off and it’s so happy to see it that it’s even laughing and giggling! Hear it?lol 😂
@ON YOUR ASS Not really. Dutch Air Force took part in combat missions over Yugoslavia and Afghanistan with their Fokker made F-16s killing a MIG-29 in the air and bombing targets on the ground.
Check out my newest video - A L1011 and Dc-10 compilation. This video is a dedication to two of my most favorite airplanes. Dc-10 and L1011 forever!
what about md-11's?
Cargospotter
ainda esta está em Operação Esse jato L1011 ?
Cargospotter it was an airforce DC10 from Holland
blz
Great video! Well done!!!
1:48 that pilot has terrible internet connection, damn lags
When they forget they arent playing FSX
yaa, I noticed that too late ... :D
It has to do with the stabilizing software that the creator used. It almost makes the plane look fake like fsx.
The beautiful Tri-star L-1011 awesome aircraft the smooth design! Miss them in the sky!
Fantastic video! When these 45-50 year old DC-10's are retired for good, this will become a brilliant historical piece. Kids born now will never see these beauties in the air! Great job!
Michelle Murphy yep but they do know that fatal history behind the DC-10, beautiful plane, but also not safe

Blimey! That opening clip was fantastic. You lucky bugger ;)
Cause you were standing on the runway filming !! Awesome video. I love the L1011
I was dying laughing when you offset for that second shot 😂
The L 1011 is in the best place in the world - my heart. ♥️🗺️🌎✈️

Wow that was close! I love these kinds of planes ♡
Sarah Jennings become a pilot, then you could fly one one day!
Thanks, yes that's a good idea because I have an uncle who is a pilot.
Sarah Jennings And you're cute.

AEROPLANE MD11?🙁
DC-10, friend.
It's a DC-10, it does not have the winglets.
RAF did not use DC10's they had Tristars
Ahhh I love me some tri-jets - L-1011 in particular. Just so elegant.
Thumbs up for flashback Friday.
I love DC-10 and L-1011 too, Thank for upload :)

L1011 r so such rare birds to even see one go around is amazing
ghs77 England is my city
The L-1011 is one of the most, if not most beautiful aircraft manufactured, sad that there weren't more produced. Great video!! :)
Both the go-around and the landing were amazing. Good job filming this extremely rare bird!
RAF its standard practice specially at Brize Norton to carry out touch and goes all day long no matter what aircraft it is...my son used to spend days doing touch and goes in his C17 Globemaster 2
0:49 ohhhhh myyyyy gooood my ears, love the trijets
These Trijet three-holers are truly underrated gems in Aviation!
My late father was a senior captain on L-1011. He always said it was his favorite ride. Roomy inside and lots of power!

Very cool, Use to fly on the L1011 back in the Seventies. Nice big spacious planes, shame they are gone.
I miss the tri engine jets
The L-1011 was the best looking out of all the trijets.
Agreed!
I love that Kalitta Air 47 in the background. When Kalitta started out he used L-1011s also.
I love tri-jets! Thanks for posting this video Mr. Cargospotter, massive thumbs up. Have a good week! :)

great video of these tri jets! the l-1011 was always one of my favorites, ,wish they were still in production. the go arounds were cool!
Awesome screaming sounds coming from that Dutch Air Force dc-10
Superb. Just superb.
Definetly the best spotting channel :D

06:12 So gentle touchdown. No rubber smoke from tires. The professional way to land..
That is a butter landing indeed
This video is beyond incredible. Thank you so much for posting. New subscriber and liked.
Heavy Three-Holer Heaven!!! You are so lucky!
And yes, many military Air Forces from around the world have taken those aircraft and modified them to still fly and they are so nice.....Thanks...
That Canadian DC-10-30 C-GKFD is still in heavy daily service between Miami, Venezuela and Colombia. Pretty good for a plane built in early 1975.
amazing video, the L1011 is very special, but the white dc-10 in the snow was just beautiful
The Royal Dutch Air Force plane is a KC-10 tanker. USAF also has them. KC-10 bombers are currently being used in Arizona to fight wild fires up north near Prescott.
The RNLAF KDC-10 is a former civil plane of Martinair
Woow...Beautiful
Awesome video! I miss the tri jets.
and the second time you decided not to stay behind it lol good strategy!
Those are DC-10s, the L1011 has its third engine in the tail with an S-duct intake above the fuselage at the tail root. L1011 is a beautiful airplane.
It's a mix of both. The first clip (the go-around) is an L-1011.
I was hoping to see more L-1011's, but you show mostly DC-10's .. an ugly sister of the tri-jet series.
Work of art fellow you tuber. Keep 'em coming!
Awesome video Mate!!
such an excellent video, thank you!!
"Go-around power, please"
The go around isn't always because of a problem. Many pilots make their final approach with the option to land or go around. They do have to practice certain things, after all.
Thanks for your good video
some increadable footage :) !!!!
Not gonna lie, lockheed had one hell of a plane design when they made this....the thing's a beauty (and had a pretty impressive record as well).
DC-10 "Koninklijke Luchtmacht" is from the Netherlands 😍
L1011 was the superior jet. Better engineered and more refined and that S-Duct! Having said thatr I always love to see the local FedEx MD-11 fly over with its more rear mounted heavily swept main wing.

AWSOME!
Runway check car at the end is looking for any FOD after that many dc10 landing and takeoffs. Like what happened with the Concord disaster.
Muito bom video amigo. Parabens.
What unusual about an military plane doing that or touch and goes, its a daily training retrial almost! Still some perfect Tri-jet footage :)
Thanks for sharing! @8:45 was this a planned touch&go? Why were the spoilers/speed brakes deployed? Thanks
Great video
Is the L-1011 still flying right now?
nooo ... rarely
Yes. Look up TriStar Experience.
I always wondered how that back tail wing held that heavy engine up the too engines off of a 727 on the dc10s
I am still sad that I was not around when PSA (California) bought their one and only L-1011 Tristar. What a beautiful plane in an equally cool livery.
I remember that! I forget what the plan was for that plane? I think it was going to be a larger SD-SJC route runner which was and still is popular

Amazing clip!
im still surprised that these planes are still in service
God i love the L1011
I didnt even know they still used these planes
Edit: read the description like a good boy, are they in operation today?
Not anymore, no
wow, go arounds are rare enough really when u think of the number of landings but an L1011 go around has to be a very rare catch now
That looked very powerful (never stand behind a plane if it starts accelerating
cool, looks flight training,.
1:55 too bad your camera couldn't catch the roar produced by the CF6 engines on the DC-10 :(
I've never seen a center main gear on an L1011. Is this some kind of extra long range version?
Paul Roberts the first few clips are l1011, then the dc10
die 1011 fliegt noch????😅😅
You don't see too many DC-10 much any more!
Do tristars still fly?
Belíssimo Vídeo
Some of these are DC10s they have a different tail than a L1011
I think it was its belly gear the first two round it didn't expand properly
Wait... the Netherlands has an Air Force ?

Why does this look like a DC-10 to me
6:22 thats a lot of birds😬
.. luv this video ?.....yes... yes I do...

Why the DC-10’s added to this video?
Just to show how much better looking the L-1011 was.
