Austin Wintory, cannot imagine the Banner Saga trilogy without your unequaled presence through unmatched compositions to enhance this beautiful yet tragic game - your fan forever, stoicmom
The Banner Saga trilogy is such an outstading piece of art... The thematics, the music, the style, the plot, and all the emotion put into it seriously shows.
These games and their soundtracks are on a league of their own. I still listen to the soundtracks, and combined with the memories it evokes from the games, it's an epic experience each time.
I can honestly say that playing though the entire trilology of these games was transformative - and that your music was a formative part of that experience. I do have to ask - since it was one of the first things I thought of when hearing the soundtrack - was "Rite of Spring" an inspiration as well?
Hi Austin. Don't know if you're still reading comments to these older videos but I just wanted to say your music really elevates what's already a great trilogy. I love how you incorporate the main theme into so many pieces. Ruin Beyond The Walls is one of my favorite tracks in the whole trilogy, right next to We Are All Guests Upon the Land.
Thank you for this insightful commentary! The Banner Saga OSTs are truely works of art in their own right. I can't imagine what the experience of composing for the last two games must mean to you, and I can't wait to hear what direction you'll be taking the third. Skål!
There's a song called Cherry Blossom by Mathew Halsall that has an opening horn phrase with a really similar ascendant, melancholic melody to the Banner Saga theme. Whenever I hear that section I think of The Banner Saga and almost want to cry. Such a great soundtrack.
Great video and amazing music. Through your work from Journey, to Assassin's Creed, Banner Saga and everything in between, you've almost single-handedly inspired me to tell my own stories through every medium I can get my hands on. One day I hope to achieve a high enough quality to work you, in whatever way that may be. All the best and thanks for everything!
Thank you so much for your work in Banner Saga! I think your score was definitely an integral part of this game. Not often there is a soundtrack that will stuck with you for a long time.
Dunno how I just learned that you wrote the music of the Banner Saga... but fullhearthidly thank you. I have been listening to the soundtrack for years. Crying, cleansing my soul with it. You and all the people making this sountrack helped me. Once again... thank you
The Dmaj(add4) in the second bar of the theme is such a heart wrenching chord. As soon as I fired up the game for the first time and heard that theme, I couldn’t even start playing until I had picked it out on the piano to figure out what THAT CHORD was. And… it kind of sounds like trash on the piano. It made me realize just how brilliant the orchestration is, not only to use a surprising dissonant harmony, but to place it in the sonority of the brass in such a way as to extract all of this emotional content from it. Bravo!
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've followed your work since I stumbled across the beauty that is flOw, fallen in love with Journey, and being awestruck by The Forge. I enjoy all your work, and have become distinctly who I am today because the sounds you have shared and the feelings they invoke. TBH, I've never had the opportunity to play a game by thatgamecompany due to not having a PS4, but I believe I still had the better half of the experience by having your soundtracks. I will say this, though; thanks to you, I found Horn, and that was simply magical, in story and sound.
Thanks for sharing this! I didn't know about all the collaborations, and it's always inspiring to see some of the creative process behind the music, like sawing a guitar.. Now i'm gonna listen closer while replaying the first two.
i want games like these to come to the switch, because they don't strain that console and use only what is needed, and i don't have to hurry myself and only play it in one room i could take my time and take it where i go and experience games at their own pace, also beautiful music like always.
I love this inside look, thank you so much for putting it together! I've listened to this soundtrack for hundreds of hours and played it non-stop when I was traveling throughout Scandinavia. One question though, one of my faves was 'No life forever goes unbroken', could you tell us more about your collab with the original Icelandic vocalist? I'd love to hear more of him in the third composition!
Question for Austin Wintory: How involved were you with Stoic Studios in terms of naming the songs? I've been listening to the soundtrack and there's a song from the first game called No Tree Grows in the Sky, hearing the name I was reminded of a bit of dialogue from the character Tryggvi: something like: _Tryggvi gestures to his spear_ "You can make this from a tree Rook." The 3rd game has the song, No Tree Grows in a Moonless Sky. Tryggvi is symbolized with his necklace, featuring the symbol of a moon. There's also, Even the Trees Can Smell Your Blood from the 2nd game, but I'd assumed those weren't related. {?} Is this a refference to the character? There are plenty of other trilogies of songs, is there a reason? I never really understood Aleo's peom in one of the endings, it does feature some of the song names if I'm not wrong; is this related? *It has been five years so you don't need to have an answer.* Also, is there a translation to English out there or should I just go ahead and learn Icelandic? Thanks if you had the patience to read this. I'm a fan of your work, Keep making it. :)
Love these behind the scenes videos! Really inspiring, makes me want to compose more. The banner saga soundtracks are amongst my favourites, true masterpieces.
Is there any consideration of doing concerts based on the soundtracks? I haven't been to Boettcher in some time, and I'm looking for an excuse to go...
This is an absolutely incredible look at your work with us, thank you, Austin! You've helped make the Banner Saga trilogy what it is.

One of my most cherished dream jobs of my career
3:33 shivers
So much time has passed, but this is still the best soundtrack I've ever heard :) Thank you Austin, this is amazing
Thank you so much
I love how you incorporated the electric guitar into the music. That is so damn creative.
These games and their soundtracks are on a league of their own.

I consider Stravinsky a general influence but there was never anything deliberate. I just love his music overall :)

Thank you! These games remain among my all-time most cherished projects. I love them so much and still periodically re-play them!
Very insightful. So, one of the composer's work is to identify the most talented and appropriate persons to work with.
Thank you for this insightful commentary! The Banner Saga OSTs are truely works of art in their own right. I can't imagine what the experience of composing for the last two games must mean to you, and I can't wait to hear what direction you'll be taking the third.

I'd never heard the piece but you're right! I can hear the similarity, wow!

One of the best game soundtracks ever, period. Thank you so much for your genius talent Austin!

2021 still playing the trilogy. I cannot wait to see what's is next from this developer and perhaps Austin will be a part of their new journey?
Stay tuned :)

I'm gonna get the soundtrack for this now. THIS IS AWESOME AAAAHHHHH
I love the use of brass in The Banner Saga's music.
This is so cool
Austin: "Oooh! A youtube musician! Let's ask them to participate in this project!" */:/*
I got it!
Is there any consideration of doing concerts based on the soundtracks? I haven't been to Boettcher in some time, and I'm looking for an excuse to go...
sooooo coooool !
The part about Peter Hollens begins about 04:50 in the video
Amazing music and so inspiring video! In 3:19 flutes go "repeat ad lib."/aleatoric or this part is precisely notated?
Aleatoric box notation, with specific notes being repeated freely, out of time from conductor
@@awintory Thanks!
This is awesome! Kind of wish they'd managed to release The Banner Saga 2 for Linux though.
