Your here freaking out about being about 100 lbs over. I’m currently 600 lbs over and that is the closest I’ve been to being legal in weeks.
😂
makes me think of my grandad talking about the old loggers when he was a cop back in the day. they had a per pound over deal worked out with the local scale boys... ive seen pictures of a truck he pulled over so overloaded the arms of the log trailer where starting to bend out.
Lol I rolled through the scales coming into Oklahoma from Texas on i40 at like 34,100lbs on my tandems because they wouldn't slide. I was kinda paranoid about it because I knew I always got called into those scales and I didn't know what would happen. I saw the lady watch me pull up, look at her screen, look back at me and laugh. Then gave me the green light 😂😂
And you think 600 pounds is a lot ? I drive a 7axel side dump, my max is 27.5 ton but i always get loaded between 26 and 32 ton.
@@renzocarini3711 No I'm used to going way over that. 80600 is a light load for me.
As a retired airline pilot all I can say checklist , checklist, checklist. Make you a checklist and stick to it without fail no mater how much you think you have it memorized. Distractions are you’re number one enemy!
as an armchair pilot (FSX for many many many years with a shitload of addons, still like to play it eventhough this new sim is nice. My computer cant handle it though) i totally agree.
I happen to drive a truck myself in the Netherlands. And i have a checklist made which i ALWAYS check point by point.
Mostly because i am a jumper, who jumps from one truck to another. So you can never take anything for granted.
Once in the beginning of my trucking career i did take some stuff for granted, which caused the red line to snatch behind a lightfixture on the backside of the truck, causing it to ofcourse rip itself off of the port. And thereby applying full brakes in the middle of a curve/bend towards the highway.
Almost caused me to slip off the road into a ditch.
The guy who hooked the trailer up forgot to put a strap on the hose to make sure it would not get snatched up by anything if taking a curve, bend, you get it.
But a buddy of mine had something much more intense. He also jumps from truck to truck, and is not one of them checklist types. He always jumps in expecting it to all be good.
So he did that day.
The trailer seemed to be attached correctly.
It pulled with the truck all the way to the intersection where he had to make a left turn.
And then it came loose, the trailer.
And because it was a bit older trailer the brakes did not catch when the hoses detached....... So it went straight into the office of our own company. Luckely this was at night so nobody was in the office building at that time.
But man, you should have seen the damage. That was funny.
Your much to interested in making your appointment. As a 30 year long hauler, I can tell ya, the load will get there when it gets there. NEVER EVER be in a hurry!
Takes less time to pull off the shoulder than it does to pull it out of the ditch.
Called time management
Always always always protect your cdl to hell with any delivery schedule, the cdl is your money maker, always stay safe, and stay legal, if you need to stop to stay legal that’s makes you a driver, pushing through no matter what just to make a stupid timeline makes you a steering wheel holder
That's what I do,
I got overloaded at a landfill and was on a quarter tank. For the remaining miles of trip could only put in 20 gallons at a time. That was a pain in the arse!
Make sure to fill up before picking up that way you know if full you'll always be at weight.
Dave. If you’re gonna survive in this industry, you need to relax. You’re going to give yourself a heart attack. Try hard not to add stress to your day.
His expression of stress makes his videos more interesting to watch! #DoItForTheViews
Good Advice
Is funny how the minute you get the load is so important and it has to be on time
What about the 27 hours you spent waiting for it
Right lol
Hated that. Dispatch calls u like yea start heading there now. I usually dnt try to rush. Not my fault 🤷♂️
@@cc131195 what type of cb radio does he have ?
@@Jamariosmith5 idk man im not a super trucker lol
Prolly doesnt have a good dispatcher tbh...could have had another load to fill that time...then again theres that chance that a pick up could be scheduled n it turns out that they gota load n all the driver can do is sit bobtail n wait...hes in a hurry cus he had to wait that 27 hours. Thats truckin, shit happens n all you can do is deal with it as it comes cus its an unpredictable business.
When hooking and dropping, set up a routine and follow it religiously. And if you are swapping trailers and the other driver wants to be helpful and crank your gear down or disconnect your lines, always double check behind them. Always CYA.
Great advice 👍❤️
You are now one of my favorite truckers on RUclips man. Very inspiring bro I can’t wait to start trucking.
I appreciate it!
Man I remember when my old delivery company hid over 1000lbs of corrosive in my box truck because I didn't have my Hazmat endorsement. No placards or paperwork! Weigh station visit was tense to say the least.
And if you had had an accident, you would get the figurative chair.
that's not good
Once I was 200lbs over weight because i fuelled up so I kept my revs high and it actually worked
how do you keep revs high on an auto?
@@maoduida387 put in in manual mode and stretch out the rpm range i guess.
@@AllThisForWhat Yes if it has automanual functionality. No if it doesn't.
I've been in training and these videos have been helping me tremendously
You’re doing a great job buddy!! I’m proud of you. I wish I would’ve been that attentive to detail when I first started. Keep your head up. You’re going to be a great driver buddy!
I've done that it depends on the dot officer. Thankfully I had the scale ticket and was able to show on my dispatch that I was to fuel up 45 miles away from the scale and had to drive another 800 miles before my next fuel stop so no over weight ticket for me
#1....Go to Walmart or Target and buy the big packs of baby wipes. They are excellent for those longer days between showers. It's a decent way to get the funk off of ya.
#2....Always ask for a load diagram. Learn how to read them. If those tandems were all the way forward on a 40,000lb or more load, they didn't space the product out enough. They packed it all up front.
#3....Don't forget the weight of DEF fluid. Keep it topped off so you aren't adding weight.
#4....Don't forget you can adjust the 5th wheel. It's not much, but 100lbs can be the difference.
#5....Many states will give you 500lbs on the drives, as long as you are under on gross. Florida will typically give 1,000lbs.
#6....Stop relying so much on Trucker Path to tell you if scales are open.
#7....The PrePass system has no idea how much weight you are carrying. It goes off a percentage of trucks being called in. Usually, it's 10%-15% call in rate. The system is checking permits and whether your company is on a watch list, or has unpaid fines. Expect that scale to be open, unless it's Al, Pa, WV, or Tx.
Dave sounds like the guy who messages his trainer 2am in the morning to "show him something cool"
I saw a CFI truck going through Kansas City and I yelled hey it's Dave I don't think it was you tho sadly
Was in Kansas City yesterday morning
Air Assault
Some states allow extra weight for an APU if your truck is fitted with one.
My trainer made me so stressed...... once I forgot to raise the landing gear until I was halfway out of the yard!!!
I know it was my fault but he made me stressed by yelling “hurry up!!” And “you can’t be taking your time out here”
But ultimately my fault but his yelling didn’t help me at all.
No trainer should rush you. Speed comes with practice and experience
I had a trainer the same way, mine would literally cuss at me and rush me while I was trying to back up. Yelling they are people waiting on you, you cant make them wait!. I actually just quit on him and went home.
I always tell the guys to take their time and be safe, if you get yelled at for that then you don’t want to work there.
@@curiousgeorge5992 exactly. I finally screamed back "I'm screwing up because I'm doing what you're telling me" I'm trying it one more time right now. It's the same way the guys got attitude.
Always wondered how truckers determined how much fuel to take on. As a pilot we have charts we use to determine how much fuel to take on. Only on vary rare occasions have I ever taken off with full tanks.
Your videos really make me want to go back to driving cross country! I loved living on the edge hoping the scale was closed! I never really gave it much thought about fueling after scaling at CAT but you never know! also nice to see you can weigh yourself from your phone! wish I had that!
Hey Dave ..Your An Amazing RUclipsr And Trucker....i Always Wanted to be a trucker when I grew up but then I changed my mond..lol..thank you and all the other truckers for everything you guys do for is during this whole virus thing if it wasn't for you truckers being on the road each and every single day we wouldn't have the stuff we need to survive so thank you..keep up the good work on your videos
Appreciate ya!
@@RidingWithDave and I appreciate you to man..thanks for everything you do...I would love to meet you one day but I know that's not possible because I live down in Canada Newfoundland
Good 'ole Dave... always gettin' out to look... Keep up the good work Dave!
3:00 Trugreen also taught me to get out and look, it helps you know your surroundings and helps you visualize how to back up. Nice job being safe, it'll pay off for sure!
I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I drive for Howard's Transportation. Been enjoying your videos man.
I’ve only been driving about 6 months now and I run flatbed for a small lumber supplier and I was sent to a mill to get a load of lumber and bring it back. It was only 150 miles so I didn’t bother to weight it but when I got back turns out the one load I brought back was supposed to be two loads, so I was roughly 97000 lbs coming back.
Damn what they tell you? Or is that not alot. I'm not a trucker but just curious
@@randomguy2369, 80,000lbs gross total. 12,000lbs on the steers., 34,000lbs each on the drive axle and on the trailer axle.
must be a huge diffrence going from a bike to a truck was watching yiu when u were biking but stopped and watching again loving the content keep it up
Hell yeah it’s legal !!! To grow too! 2 shops on every corner!
Breathing in a huge sigh of relief for you, Dave:) Stay safe:)
@Riding with Dave
Dave, I know nothing about trucking except, as my mama always said, “give them the road”. Even tho I don’t understand half of what you’re talking about, you’re very entertaining!
I know how you feel bro. Been there. Peace of mind is everything. 👍
Your trainer is the best, Dave
You go Dave enjoying your channel keep on keeping on hi from the UK
Thank ya!
Always fill up of possible before getting loaded, used to haul beer and they load you to the max!!!. Otherwise you might have to blow throw a couple weigh stations...
You stress so easy. Relax Dave it all will work out for the best
This guy makes me laugh sometimes I love ur vids bro
Oh just a tip if the trailer is to low you can dump the air in your tractor bags it keeps you from slamming the king pin but no sooner the 5th wheel is under before you hit the pin air the bags back up give it a few seconds and then hit the pin
I’ll have to try that
@@RidingWithDave you don't have to ..slam ..the pin you will learn to feel the trailer get up on the fifth wheel then you. Just ease into it till it clicks and locks...kinda the same way you get a feel for the clutch...
I remember when you celebrated having 10K subs and said you wouldn't do a face reveal till 100K. Well dammit Dave. Look at you now! I'm proud of you my man! Maybe for the 150K mark you do some Gennie Coupe hunting for old times sake? lol All the best buddy!
Dude, I don’t even drive a semi but it’s really entertaining thanks!
I always do this before picking up at Anheuser Busch St Louis. There is always a pile of rocks (ballast) outside of these places.
When you get out and check the height, connect your air lines and light cord, that way once your connected to the pin, you can release the trailer brakes which will help lift the trailer which will help you to roll up the dolly legs.
Shoot I can't remember the last time I hit a cat scale lol but I sure do miss the super trucks cards. That's why I like flatbedding you set yourself up for proper distribution not having to guess through a sealed door😂
I guarantee that all of the drivers telling you to GOAL haven't always got out and looked.
Crazy story. I had a pickup in Akron ohio. Waited 4 hours bc the business was closed even though it was a drop and hook. Was picking up a loaded and dropping off an empty. After hours of calls finally they said the trailer was in the lot for me. Picked it up and went down the road to weigh it. It was loaded wrong and no way I could get it under weight. It was a three stop load one in NC one in SC and one in GA. I was bypassed all the way down loaded. Way back up empty pulled in at every scale lol
Generally, most states give you an allowance over weight to allow for the scales.
hey Dave, do not set your brakes on the scale--you may be forcing weight forward or back when you do that. all cat scales are actually very level and it may take a sec for the truck to settle but it won't normally roll off the scale, then you are getting an actual "static" weight
when you want to make sure it is connected, i always pull forwards just a bit after i connected it. So i try to pull it forwards, but without any hoses on it. So to see if it is connected.
It wont pull forwards if it is connected correct.(and the brakes are applied to the trailer which they should if the airlines aint attached) Plus i then go do the legs and check the pin. But i always rock the boat a little to feel if it is securely locked.
Just another tip.
This happened to me last week TQL misrepresented the weight by 5000 pounds, plus the shipper loaded it front heavy. Had to drive 1000 miles with 1/4 full fuel tanks to stay legal.
Hey Dave I had a day like that last week wth a company called roadwood
If you have a APU you can scale out at 80,400
That makes two of us. These loads should not be dependent on fuel imo. You my friend just pulled an Avocado
Now this is to funny I watched ur morning video taking a dump before I left to work just got back from work taking my evening dump! And ur still at that damn 7/11 wow that sucks bro hope it works out better for u 😂 lol
Hopefully CFI paid you well for your time , know your worth!
Your funny brother, keep it up, I'm going to use your referral if I join the team when I get out of cdl school next month, think you'll be hearing from me again. Can't wait..
G.O.A.L
Get Out And Look. My hubby drove for a company that had that on the lower portion of the driver side mirror.
Biggest thing is being to comfortable with your job. If you're so comfortable you're not worrying about what you could forget will be the day you forget and screw up big time.So nothing wrong with double and triple checking things.
i like how an unintentional link appeared
As a driver too. I know there’s too many SUPER TRUCKERS giving advice. If you know your good your good heck with them
A tug test will never fail you i always tug on the trailer after i connect to the trailer
Love the channel man
I know this is an old video but there's also an APU exemption of 400 or 650 depending on state, with only CA KY (DC) NC and RI having no exemption. Also due to their calibrations and non precise weigh in motion...most scales wont mess with you until you get into the 4 digit over range, from word of mouth.
Specifically in OK their law states: To be eligible for the exception provided in this subsection, the operator of the vehicle must obtain written proof or certification of the weight of the auxiliary power or idle reduction technology unit and be able to demonstrate or certify that the idle reduction technology is fully functional.
3. Written proof or certification of the weight of the auxiliary power or idle reduction technology unit must be available to law enforcement officers if the vehicle is found in violation of applicable weight laws. The additional weight allowed cannot exceed four hundred (400) pounds or the actual proven or certified weight of the unit, whichever is less.
Always fuel before you load.
Too many shippers like to put you on the scale for an empty tare so they can max you out.
If you don't fill up.. make sure you have enough for a days ride.
Made that mistake in Idaho on a load of potatoes, the notes said "they load heavy, go in low on fuel" or something like that and me being a dumbass didn't notice it was for a live load and they loaded whatever they could fit so I was stopping twice a day to refuel and having to call dispatch to open up fuel every day since we were only allowed to use the automated system once a day lmao... Luckily it was only about a 1200 miles iirc so it wasn't terrible but going in full of fuel is always good advice. If you're illegal you don't leave and it's on the shipper to reload you... Atleast that's how my company worked... And how it should work imo
Dave a gallon of liquid is actually 8.33 pounds or 8 to make math simple
My bad Dave I forgot there’s heavier liquids and diesels lighter than water or regular gas my bad 😂😂
*If you're that worried about it just go around the scales. I used to bypass scales all the time before I retired when I was over weight or out of driving hours.*
Most states give you 200 pounds over on any given axle do to the scale being out of accuracy and
and what please you can’t just stop talking mid sentence please tell us
I was always told “a pint is a pound the world around” which means 8 pounds per gallon. So 120 gallons would be 960 pounds. But Whadda I know, I’m just a local guy 🤷🏼♂️
In the UK a gallon weights 10 pounds.
Diesel fuel is lighter than water. I haul fuel and we calculate 6.7 lbs per gallon in the warm weather and 7.3lbs in the cold
If you Google it. Diesel weighs 7.1 lbs per gallon. Don't be afraid of the Dot. Unless you are way overweight they don't fuck with you. I've crossed the scale 1000 over on my trailer and 1000 over on drives 89000 gross. They let me go even though I was 4500 over bridge in SD. I wouldn't do that in Wyoming because the fuckers come out and measure your truck and trailer.
That's the Purina plant in Edmond Ok. I was there for almost 16 hours on a live load a couple months ago. Even after I got in a door it still took about seven hours. Place is brutal
Me: Worse thing Truckers are ever taught is to get under the nose of the trailer to check the coupling of the kingpin...
RUclipsrs: why is that so...
Me: well a freak accident such as airbags blew out on a fellow driver of mine and the trailer dropped hitting him in the back of the head putting him in a coma then R.I.P. ended up killing him. Never ever craw under heavy equipment that’s what “TUG TEST” are for...
Sorry about your friend but I agree with you.... I rather do a Tug Test than get beneath the trailer
I do a tug test as well as looking at the release handle to make sure it is tight in against the fifth wheel. Whenever I look under at the pin/jaws, to me it seems impossible to tell what “locked” looks like. Tug test is my main method
Hard hat
I remember the fuel game. I drove a transfer for a guy who loved to play with the fuel levels. We were toe to toe a COUPLE times over the issue. Do what you have to, but every fuckin day used to piss me off!
Heyyy Averitt!! Our southern brothers. What’s up from Mountain Valley Express from out west! Lol
I got a 14 freightliner coronado wit apu and crash bar i have made that mistake before in v.a on 81
One of the most important things to remember when picking up. Make sure your full when you scale 🤦
Dave, you can usually be as much as 500 lbs over on your steers if the tires are rated for 6250 lbs. So, next time you are overweight ok your drives by 300-400 pounds, slide your fifth wheel forward 2 notches to take 500 pounds off of your drive axles.
Don't always trust truckers path I found out the hard way plus the dot keeps tabs on that app. But I really like your videos and I wish you the best.
I used to drive a truck like that Peterbilt now I’m in an automatic international bye-bye Fundaes
I wish I had a manual so bad
I have a manual and sometimes I wish I had an automatic
Automatics suck I had a freightliner cascadia 10spd with 900k on it and when my company started buying new trucks last year I could out pull all of them whether we where loaded or empty
@@4spdlife857 I agree with you
In Alabama, there is 10% weight tolerance for raw materials on the highway. There should be at least 5% tolerance on all roads.
I was 2950 pounds over on my last load and I went around the chicken coup, there’s ALWAYS a way around the coup !!
Hey back when I drove i sat for 8 days for a meat load at ibp Amarillo Texas
Don't set your brakes while scaling it sets your weights off.
How's that
Damn weed shops every 20 feet in Oklahoma.
what are u talking about, they are 5 feet apart here in ardmore
@@pixel_boi8953 My favorite name... Doobie Express for “Higher” Health... I saw them somewhere on Hwy 69. No shortage of locations in OK.
Try Denver
In Oklahoma you can use it if you have a prescription, but recreational use remains illegal.
Ah yes, you always need the tug test. One time someone at an Amazon facility didn’t do that, and they dropped the trailer....with the legs up 😂
@An Austrian Painter 😂
You ever go to the drop lot in pocahontas il... that's where I'm from i live in the town next to it now greenville,IL
One thing you have to remember there is a lot of Karen's on you tube
Super Truckers too
One in the same 😂
Yes weed is legal here in Oklahoma. You have to have a cannabis card for it.
Hello from Skiatook, OK!
There will always be super truckers telling you do this or that when they probably don't do it themselves most likely just some steering wheel holders
I would put it on my steers than drives. My steers can hold 12350. I've been at 12400 before and got green light on scales.
Talk about rushing and making mistakes... Not nearly in the same scale but I once drove 5 miles with a travel trailer on our car without the clamp down on the ball 🤦 lucky as F
Depends on the officer I’ve been over 400 on drives and rolled on a weight station most of them allow for full
Hey, I know where that is! I used to go up and down I-35 all the time!
In Oklahoma weed is legal medically but the requirements to get it are next to nothing. There are dispensaries on almost every corner in my town haha
Ride the lightening brother 🤣
I hate when your pu is right before a weigh station. The load I just hooked was right in town with no truck stops/scales before state line.
Guess the best you can and go, I’m a start early driver so most scales seem to be closed. Just over the state line weighstation closed, two miles down the road is a scale.
We carry a lot of beverages so overweight total isn’t an issue but sometimes you just don’t have one more hole to get your drives legal depending on make/year of your trailer.
Like picking up in Raleigh NC and going west, but the closest truck stop is just 1 mile west of the DOT scale, PETRO, or picking up in the west side or north side of Memphis and the scales in AR are just before the truck stops of west memphis, and the Memphis truck stops are way out of route to just find out all the weights are legal
When you said your in Oklahoma I immediately started looking for land points to find out where
Hey Dave stay safe
Thank ya
Yeah it happens sometimes best advice I got is learn how to dodge scales.
Run the scale boi!!
Whatever happens :) realize that panicking while going to the scale won't help much, just come to terms with it and relax what's done is done
You’re getting lighter by the mile, relax.
That's right.
About a pound a mile.
Shoot we haul grain out here in the northeast we usually average 90,000 to 100,000 pounds a load
They will give more if you have a APU. You could have slid your 5th wheel moved a lot to your steer axle☮️
