I did a lot of research before I bought my RK37S last Nov to replace my IH 384D. I talked to many folks on forums as well as many dealers. Not one dealer was willing to come within $5K of the price of the RK37 feature for feature. Their selling point was fear... it's off brand, you won't be able to get parts or service, RK has been in the tractor business before and didn't last,etc. LOL they are all off brand, nobody makes a compact tractor in the US. I'm an engineer so, outside of warranty service I do all my own repairs, so their fear didn't play well as a sales tactic with me. I have about 30 hours on it so far and I am very happy with it! Here is a list of my likes and dislikes: Likes - Low center of gravity (my property is on the side of a ridge, turning around with the IH384D was hairy at times) - The bucket is ample and the loader is powerful - Lots of extras included such as ballast in rear tires, remote, brush guard, etc - Much more fuel efficient than my IH 384D - Breaks hold well on the hill, because of the 4 wheel drive I haven't needed split breaking so far - The industrial tires work well even in wet conditions on a slope, and don't tear up the pasture the way ag tires do - Ample gearing (12 speed) and shifts while rolling - Easy to mount & dismount on both sides - Comfortable seat, & controls well laid out - 3-point system works well and has ample capacity -PRICE!!! Dislikes - SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) emblem mounting location puts in in the way of fuel tank filler and top link holder - The guard cap for the PTO output quill is screwed down, it should snap on and off and be secured with a rubber lanyard - The main gearbox linkage frequently binds and it can be difficult to get into gear, requiring you to let the clutch out a little to get it to fully engage, this is WAY uncool on a steep slope! - Similar to the tranny linkage binding the loader joystick occasionally binds, sometimes while the loader is moving - The brush guard reflects the light from the headlights right back at you - The rubber mat on the deck frequently catches the lip of my boot when mounting and lifts up, should be secured - Big LCD display with mostly unused space, should have more indications there, or be smaller. Looks odd & out of place - Hard to find accessories for; after 6 hours running it in cold rain I wanted a canopy. Was hard to find and the Femco Tuff Top XLR I bought (at Rural King) isn't really color matched. At least Rural King should have some purpose built accessories for it - NO CUP HOLDER!!! ;p Overall I am extremely please with this tractor so far!

This video contributed greatly to my decision to purchase a RK37 shuttle-shift. Prior to this video, I had my eye on the pricey and minimally-functional L3901. This is my first tractor, heck, just a year ago, I acquired my first riding mower, a big zero-turn. I was afraid.... I didn't even sit on it until I had read the manual twice. But I have about 33 hrs on my tractor, and I can hardly believe that the other brands make things like lights and cushion seats "optional" (and pricey). The rear hydraulic feature, although I don't have a use for it yet, is a very nice plus. The fuel tank is very accessible, I've had no issues with the placement of the front hydraulic lines and the larger wheels/tires have been (probably) a literal life saver on my property, which seems to have plenty of fairly large holes (those holes were hiding under the tall grass....). The machine is so powerful, it frightens me some and I'm still taking things very slowly. The only thing which has annoyed me is, the rubbery/plastic knob on the end of the PTO stick comes off when I need to get forceful with it ( the manual talks about the force needed sometimes to get it "in gear" ...use the clutch and move forwards and backwards a bit), which isn't very often the case. I just put the knob back on. Usually, the PTO lever moves into place with little force. I chalk this up to the fact that I'm on a tractor, and not in a cushy automobile with a $2500 transmission... I do like that I can stand up while driving it because sitting for hours is not only unhealthy, I have some back problems already and I need the variety (I'm pretty sure you have to be on the seat for it to start...dunno for sure, I've never tried otherwise). The adjustable seat and steering column are good for my back, too. Everything has been a fairly steep and awkward learning curve for me -- I've never worked with a grease gun, I've never hooked up a rotary cutter / PTO shaft, all my wrenches were too small ... hahaha....but I believe this will be an excellent purchase which will reward me and outlast me. As far as "RK selling tractors"... well I dunno. Right now, they seem to be selling much faster than they can supply (I received a totally newly assembled tractor... three weeks after I signed finance papers...), and just today, all the rest of my implements are finally available for me to have (about six weeks after signing). I think they made a good choice with King Kutter (I really like the rotary I got, minus one fairly minor issue), but I'm not sure KK's production line was fully ramped up.... new business ventures can be unpredictable and I can see KK holding back major capital deployment until the RK thing really gets going. I don't expect RK to go away and they talk like they are very committed to the tractor thing going forward. It would really piss off the consumer if they suddenly dropped service and maintenance on the tractors five years down the road, regardless of the reason. I think they realize this as fact. As far as price, if you finance a RK tractor with their DLL company for 84 months, you'll pay just as much for the tractor as you will a L3901 at 0% for 84 months. If you pay cash, you will spend several thousand less. Also, I kinda wish I had gone with the hydrostatic transmission, but that may just be a total newb talking ....haha... all in all, so far, I am happy with my tractor and implements. I have sheared several half-inch "pins" in my rotary cutter and the flex-hitch feature has saved several others from being decapitated. Today, I'll get my box-blade and I'll start smoothing out the crazy lumps and bumps on my property.... I don't see how anyone would be disappointed with a RK tractor, even I can tell that "tractor people" designed them and their features and these are very nice features to have! I read somewhere on the WWW that we'll run out of traction before you run out of horsepower and I have found that to be true. I have the R4 "industrial" tires (I'm not plowing fields, I just needed a rugged utility vehicle) and I really like how large (wide and diameter) they are. If anyone posts any questions, I'll try to answer them quickly.
Very well done comparison Mike. Fun Fact: TYM in Korea builds these for RK, and they also build the Mahindra 2500/2600 series (my 2540 is almost identical to your RK37). The key difference is the Mahindra has their own common-rail non-DPF engine, whereas the TYM and RK tractors have Yanmar engines (good stuff). I think the RK is quite a bit heavier than the Kubota as well. Keep up the great work -- you've got quite a following!
I also use a Mahindra and I think the RK looks and has a lot of the same features as the Mahindra. The only difference is where you put diesel in and I like the adjustable links and stabilizers better on the Mahindra. Other than that RK makes a nice tractor.
Mike, apologies if someone mentioned this already. I too had a big problem with the hydrostatic drive petal when trying to turn and look backwards. Lifting my foot and finding the rear rocker just puts your body in a contorted position that is very uncomfortable and with a lot of tractor work you will be in that position quite often. I discovered a little trick that makes that whole situation better in my opinion. Instead of picking up my foot and using the rear rocker, I simply slide my foot under the front rocker and pull up to reverse the tractor. Its so much easier to me.
Thank you for the true in field at work comparison with the two. I was looking at KU, JD and MIhind and wound up buying the RK 37. Ill have to say Im imprerssed. You post was very informative. Thanks for posting.
Still going to keep my Kubota 10 years down the road if both kept in good shape you want to bet which one brings better trade or money. Another great video Mike.
Nice comparison Mike. I went to the Rural King website and had much difficulty with it, finally I went to the RK Tractor site and found what I was looking for price and closest RK dealer. Unfortunately for me they do not have a dealership in Wisconsin or within 300 miles. That sort of takes RK out of my options. But thanks again I will continue to watch your videos.
Thanks, I understand now. I should have watched this one first. I do like the added options that aren't options but standard equipment on the RK. I wish my 3901 could lift more. When you add a set of forks, you lose some of that. I need a lighter set of forks. The wife swears I will be buying a new tractor. Great vids, keep them coming. Just wanted to say thanks for all of the info! I've been watching your various videos for a while and toying with the idea of getting an RK 37 cab tractor. A thrown rod in my Kubota L3010 this weekend made the decision easy and ordered one yesterday. Nice to go into the purchase having so much familiarity with all of the features and capabilities. Mike I noticed the RK 39 does not have valve stem protection. Before I bought my Kubota, I had a John Deere that didn’t have valve stem protectors on it and I tore out 2 valve stems while using the loader. I’ve had the Kubota and so for no valve stem repairs. Small thing but down time is huge at times! Thanks for you informative videos. Wayne

From what I see, the RK37 compares much more to the Kubota L3560 then to the L3901 in terms of features. On the other hand, the price tag might be very different. I own a L3540HST (ROPS) for more than 11 years. I has more than 2500 hours on it and I can say that it's a beast! At the time it wasn't that expensive and I'm very happy with it. I make similar use of it than Mike, and it is a very versatile machine. Good in the woods, in the field and on the roads. Also love the HST Plus hydro transmission. Easyer than a car to drive.
Great comparisons Mike. I like kubotas, got a L 2650 with loader and 648 hours. Still going strong even though it is 25-÷30 years old. Im the 2nd owner. But i really like th RK 37. Hope to own one soon. Been seeing good reviews from you and a few others on RUclips. Thanks fir sharing bud.
Good review and walk around compararing the RK and the 3901. I agree with you Mike on likes and dislikes. I especially dislike the RK hoses outside loader frame. The RK has a great price point. I'll be watching for your take on the RK shuttle vs the Kubota hydro.
Although I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about tractors (I am UNFORTUNATELY a city boy from the near west suburbs of Chitcago)🤣, one thing ANYONE with any common sense can see, in your comparison, is that you are being VERY FAIR in your analysis of both models. In my opinion, for the features you have outlined, it is apparent that the RK37 is a superior product. Albeit, it's cost may be quite a bit higher than your Econ model Kubota. (I believe I have pointed out in other vids/comments, that I am enjoying living vicariously through your channel.) You, Mike, are living MY DREAM, and although I am a bit envious, I am soooooo glad that I came across your channel when I did. YOU, my friend, are a TRUE LIFESAVER!

I'm about to retire my Ford Jubilee and upgrade to an RK tractor. I first saw them up in their Waverly Ohio store, I live closer to Hillsboro so they're going to get a location here soon I've heard. Mike I bought a Kubota BX23 for my equipment rental fleet, and those troublesome safety switches caused me more than two 'lost rental' deals, when the switches constantly shut down the engine as the operator was trying to work with the tractor, especially on uneven ground. So I switched over to Kioti,......that was a much better tractor, and my customer's 'loved' it. I was thinking that Kubota must have found a whole bunch of these micro safety switches somewhere and put them on every model. It's a good thing that Kubota doesn't make chain saws,..because they'd want to have rubber chains on them, so the operator won't get cut. ( I know that's a bit crazy to say,..but I can tell you it's no fun trying to calm down upset customer's either. Never mind the lost sales.)
Kubota and Deere compacts are now at the back of the pack performance, feature and value wise. It's clear that the bean counters at both companies have more authority than they should -- quality and engineering content have noticeably fallen.
Good comparison between tractors. I have a kubota L3901 with 300 hrs and have had no problems with the safety features during heavy brush clearing or regular mowing. My only complaint about the RK mowers is that you can’t take off the front loader like the Kubota - which I like to do when using the finish mower around fences and trees. That being said, I can’t find anything wrong with the RK tractors and they seem to be a pretty good subcompact tractor.
All of your positive comments on the RK37 are the same selling points I was looking for when I was tractor shopping a couple of years ago. Had a John Deere 4100 with the dual pedals and I could not get used to the rocker on the Kubota machines (and a couple other brands). I would up with a TYM 353HST, basically a slightly older model of the RK37. Mine has the 35-hp Mitsubishi 3-cyl. Tier-3 engine. I really like mine but it developed some minor electrical and mechanical problems that I have either bypassed (like a finicky starter relay) or haven't fixed yet (sticky hydrostat pedals). All in all a good machine though. I would love to have a Rural King near me so that I could at least drool over the new machines, and maybe get parts and service for the machine I have. The nearest TYM dealer up and disappeared last year, so I'm left without a source for parts and service. Maybe the biggest reason not to have bought a TYM and gone with something more 'available' like a Mahindra, Deere or New Holland.
Please make a video about the shuttle shift. How it works and pros and cons vs the hydro. I am buying a rk55 open station but don’t know which trans to get. The SS is cheaper but that’s all I know about it.
Mike, I'd imaging a lot of your audience is guys like me who use their tractors for more than ag work. I clear areas for foodplots, bushog saplings down, etc. The ONE thing I would like to see compared is the undersides of each tractor, i.e. how will hydraulic lines, cables, wires, fuel tanks, etc... are protected. My Kubota has a flimsy sheet metal pan under the fuel tank (more like Reynolds Wrap) and with less than 100 hrs on it I ran over a hidden T-post, which kicked up and punctured a hole in the fuel tank. The guard offered no resistance whatsoever. Would really love to see a "woods pkg" option available for these tractors, basically an armor pkg for tanks, lines, cables and windows/mirrors (if you have a cab).
A Woods Package? That is an awesome idea and you make a good point, it sounds like you and I use tractors the same way. Not very often am I in an open field with no obstacles lol
Man same here about not being in fields or open areas, I have 58 acres that right now is 100% woods other than the little bit I've cleared for a road with a rental Bobat T595 & my new Kubota MX5200 with the BH92 backhoe attachment . But the MX series is pretty beefy compared to the smaller L series, which is why I weant with that for heavier duty woods work &, I have not been disappointed with it's capability to push huge piles of brush & tree limbs around!
Wow! The loader capacity difference is quite shocking to me. The RK really has an advantage there as I believe it does in many of the other areas you pointed out. How about build quality? I've not yet stopped by my Kubota Stealer, but there is a LOT of plastic on the Rural King Tractors (fenders mostly). Fit and finish on the RK24 hood to instrument panel was horrible, 3/4" gap?!? Also, when hopping on the RK tractors at my local shop (again, I've not been to my local Kubota/MF dealer yet), I got 'tripped up' with seat adjustment levers, extremely high brake pedals, gear range selectors, etc. Is the Kubota better at the layout of these contols? (I REALLLLLLLLY wanted to get a RK tractor....but...)
Just wondering, if you have this transition hump doesn't that make the rest of the tractor lower and thus less risk for falling over? Anyway, next week get my Kubota delivered. Got a L4018 There is not much competition here (in Thailand) on that sector of the market.
We are looking at subs and considering buying one. We have it narrowed down to either going to Clearview mall for the RK24, or Turners for a Massey GC1720.
I don';t have any experience with the Massey, I do really like the RK 24, I say check them both out, Ray at Turners is a great guy, known him for years

If you were a Calvin and Hobbes fan you would know this is the worst idea ever. All the other clones just run away and do all the wickedness you are too busy to accomplish on your own due to the work you have get done, and then you have to apologize for them as well.
Good video, they don't have RK tractors in Canada that I know of, I looked at a Kubota B2650 and a Kioti CK3510SE to replace my old JD 2520. While the Kubota was a bit less, it was like comparing apples and oranges in that the Kubota was smaller in size somewhat, less hp and lift capacity. Each tractor had their good and bad points and I guess I could be happy with either one. I settled on the Kioti CK3510SE because I felt I was getting more tractor for my money. The other deciding factor and maybe a personal preference but I was used to the 2 pedal HST controls that were in my JD, I found the Kubota setup to be very awkward to use especially in reverse, and when you have a 1000' long driveway and a rear blower, I could see it making a difference. As a side note I did look at a Mahindra not only was it more than both the Kubota and Kioti it just lacked the refinement. Anyone who has wrestled trying to attach a rear blower and appreciate the telescopic and adjustable draft arms that the two orange tractors have over a Mahindra or TYM for that matter.
After this video, Mike is back down to only one tractor. LOL. One thing though on the RK. The rear tire is really close to the top of that fender. If any mud gets built up on the tire ( as this always happened ) it will chew up that fender in a hurry. Durability might be a issue down the road to with the RK.
Hey Mike,From your videos I bought a Rk37. Its new and when the engine goes through its initial start procedure the 4wd indicator light comes on but when I'm running I never see a light come on the dash? I can definitely tell its engaging from 2wd to 4wd with the lever. Does your light come on the dash when you are in 4wd?
No it does not, Im not positive but I think it's like that because most people with that size tractor always have it 4WD 95% of the time and no sense a light being on all the time I guess
Hey Mike I am about to go and buy a new tractor and looking at TYM454, RK37 and L4701. I ask you do you like the HST or Shuttle shift for all around use, I understand if you only did bucket work it would be HST. Appreciate any advice.
I came across your video when trying to find a true comparison between the RK37 and the Kubota L3901. I was really close to pulling the trigger on buying a 3901 until I saw this video. Now that you have had the RK37 for over a year now, if you had to purchase a new tractor after have had used both, in simple terms, which one would you go with? Your honest opinion please.
The RK looks like a fine tractor. You also have to factor in dealer service, repair and distance to a repair shop when buying a tractor. That is the only thing that would make me nervous when buying from a big box store.
Does the RK 37 have off seat PTO capability? I didn't see a description in the manual. You, Mike, may not have a chipper....I do and off seat PTO operation is a necessity

am I seeing this rightly? The front wheels/tires on the RK are quite a bit larger than the wheels/tires on the Kubota? I honestly am a bit nervous over the smaller Kubota tires on the front... I have holes on my property which might swallow up one of those smaller tires...
I am thinking about getting an RK in the near future some time. I want the cab. I have allergies and asthma I have to deal with in hot months. The AC will be important for those issues. On the winter months we have snow to clear, and I dont stay as warm as I used to in my older age of 65. I tend to freeze my ass off putting it bluntly. The question I have is probably obvious now. I am wonder about the cab, the AC, and the heating. I wonder what folks think of these features. Also the finish mower - does it cut the grass up real fine? We use a bagger on our John Deere and I hate that. I've pinched fingers and what not, the bags are heavy, they don't help me with my asthma situation either. I would like to get clear away from baggers. Please let me know your thoughts. When I get one, I will let you know mine.

I have two John Deere tractors and love them both. One is a model 790 which I got in a package deal in 2002, and the other is a model 3032E with the front loader and I like it too, but wish the company had put a step on the right side of the tractor also like some other companies had done. Both tractors have the refill cap and tank on top of the hood which I don't like , and the battery is hard to get to on both tractors, which isn't good. The company didn't learn much through the years. The main difference between the two tractors is the transmissions. The older one has a standard transmission where the new one have the automatic transmission which is better to work with since I don't spend so much time shifting. I love the connectors on the front of the borrowed tractor you have where you can hook up the grapple, and the connectors on the back where you can connect implements there also. Those are things which John Deere didn't put on my tractors, especially the new one. When you get ready to buy another tractor you might consider the one borrowed.

You mentioned the lifting capacity between the two tractors and there appears to be a substantial difference even though the hp of both tractors similar. What’s the reason for such a difference? My l3240 is a beefy tractor but I’m a bit disappointed in the lifting capacity. Mine lifts a 1000lbs.

With any new tool or implement, the first thing that I do is disable anything that would prevent is from starting or running. However, as I start looking at 70 on the odometer, I'm starting to look at those safety switches like when I put on the chain saw chaps,, MMM mabe not such a bad idea.
Great review Mike. It's hard to find a review by someone not selling one or the other. Have the issues you have with the Kubota been resolved during the two years since you bought the L3901? Everything is based upon price. Is there a big price difference in the two? Thanks.
Another great video Mike. Is the pricing close to the same on both machines? I have a Kubota also and agree with the FEL control being beside the seat instead of where it is. And the HST on the Kubotas is pretty noisy. I do really like my Kubota though.
Hi Herm, The RK as it sits, Shuttle Shift, Loader, Rear Remotes, Everything except third function valve is $19,998.00, Hydro Version is $21,998.00 thats the price at every Rural King that sells Tractors. The 3901 has an MSRP of probably $24,200.00 ? something like that but you could probably negotiate and get a little better deal.
That RK is a lot of tractor for the money. I am looking forward to see more videos on it. Thanks for all you do for us, it is a joy to watch and learn at the same time.
The RK is pretty clearly a clone of the Kubota, which is very smart, as the Standard L series are kind of a gold standard for value-priced Compact Utility. I wouldn't get too wrapped up in numbers, they are going to performed nearly identically. Even the FEL capacities are closer than the listed numbers. Kubota is very conservative in their ratings. In fact, until 3-4 years ago they used to measure FEL's at bucket center, 500 mm infront of the pin which is a much more realistic working loa, but had to go to "at the pin" just because everyone else was. Probably, fit and finish, operator comfort and service/parts availability would be more important than the rated capacities.
Michael Bayerl. I have heard before that Kubota is conservative on their numbers. However after running both there is no question the RK lifts and I would add more comfortably substantially more weight than the 3901. That's not my opinion either, it just does. The Grand series may be a different story but I never had one to know
Good, real world experience. I have a 2002 L3710. It's actually got all of the "grand L" features including the flat operator's deck, better 3pt arms, 4 cyl. engine, suspension seat, and a loader rated to 1900# at bucket center. Kubota has really stripped down their standard L01 series tractors to keep the price competitive.
I’m not a farmer ,never had a tractor, had skid steer , but I’m older now , dark and knees won’t take it , I’m a Harry home owner . I looked at all subcompact tractors . Unless I’m stupid the price of the 37 is very tempting. I have a Kubota zero turn , Lov it . But the price of a 37 hp Kubota, oh my . If I was a farmer with lots of land well . For me I’m not into all that , I just might want to go fishing today and blow of the yard . After this review, I’m still thinking the 37 with a cad , still not sure on the shuttle or the hydro . Not enough experience with it ... I want easy and stupid proof and lazy .
I had a New Holland basically a“LS” before going with Kubota. Kubota is a superior machine For the long Haul. Yanmar makes a great motor. It’s all the little BS That will catches up with that LS ! Kubota’s front loader lift capacity is hurting compared to competition. Great videos keep them coming bud!
i have a BX..... i do think kubota makes an excellent engine and when you buy a kubota everything is kubota. they make their own engines and pretty much everyone else goes to a 3rd party.
Sure, the Kubota lift capacity is lacking. It is. Though. In my experience, in real world applications, the Kubota will be lifting long after even bigger lifters of other brands. Case and point. My tractor has over 300 hours. A friend of mine has over 400 hours. His can lift 300 pounds more than mine. He has also replaced 3 cylinders... I have changed oil and filters. There are many stories, sure. But in most it is jd and Kubota that keep on with little issue unless abused.
Nice comparison on the two even if they are not in the same class, I just hope free isn't making you say things you really don't believe. The RK do look nice and have nice features, I would just be afraid of parts availability in a few years. Many dealers here have flooded the market with off branded tractors then stopped supporting them with service and parts just ask some Mahindra and TYM owners.
Couple things, Don't worry I never say something I don't believe, besides that I think they are both good tractors, just the RK has some features the 3901 does not. Also I don't think Rural King can really be compared to a single small dealers that pop up here and there. They made a very large investment here and have a huge facility for final assembly and parts, they have over 100 locations and their own trucking company.
With 200 hours on the Kubota you have sure kept ing clean and washed it reguarly. Thumbs up to you on how you treat your equipment.
I did a lot of research before I bought my RK37S last Nov to replace my IH 384D. I talked to many folks on forums as well as many dealers. Not one dealer was willing to come within $5K of the price of the RK37 feature for feature. Their selling point was fear... it's off brand, you won't be able to get parts or service, RK has been in the tractor business before and didn't last,etc. LOL they are all off brand, nobody makes a compact tractor in the US. I'm an engineer so, outside of warranty service I do all my own repairs, so their fear didn't play well as a sales tactic with me. I have about 30 hours on it so far and I am very happy with it! Here is a list of my likes and dislikes:
Likes
- Low center of gravity (my property is on the side of a ridge, turning around with the IH384D was hairy at times)
- The bucket is ample and the loader is powerful - Lots of extras included such as ballast in rear tires, remote, brush guard, etc
- Much more fuel efficient than my IH 384D
- Breaks hold well on the hill, because of the 4 wheel drive I haven't needed split breaking so far
- The industrial tires work well even in wet conditions on a slope, and don't tear up the pasture the way ag tires do
- Ample gearing (12 speed) and shifts while rolling
- Easy to mount & dismount on both sides
- Comfortable seat, & controls well laid out
- 3-point system works well and has ample capacity
-PRICE!!!
Dislikes
- SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) emblem mounting location puts in in the way of fuel tank filler and top link holder
- The guard cap for the PTO output quill is screwed down, it should snap on and off and be secured with a rubber lanyard
- The main gearbox linkage frequently binds and it can be difficult to get into gear, requiring you to let the clutch out a little to get it to fully engage, this is WAY uncool on a steep slope!
- Similar to the tranny linkage binding the loader joystick occasionally binds, sometimes while the loader is moving
- The brush guard reflects the light from the headlights right back at you
- The rubber mat on the deck frequently catches the lip of my boot when mounting and lifts up, should be secured
- Big LCD display with mostly unused space, should have more indications there, or be smaller. Looks odd & out of place
- Hard to find accessories for; after 6 hours running it in cold rain I wanted a canopy. Was hard to find and the Femco Tuff Top XLR I bought (at Rural King) isn't really color matched. At least Rural King should have some purpose built accessories for it
- NO CUP HOLDER!!! ;p
Overall I am extremely please with this tractor so far!

After 2 years, how do you like it . .
This video contributed greatly to my decision to purchase a RK37 shuttle-shift. Prior to this video, I had my eye on the pricey and minimally-functional L3901. This is my first tractor, heck, just a year ago, I acquired my first riding mower, a big zero-turn. I was afraid.... I didn't even sit on it until I had read the manual twice. But I have about 33 hrs on my tractor, and I can hardly believe that the other brands make things like lights and cushion seats "optional" (and pricey). The rear hydraulic feature, although I don't have a use for it yet, is a very nice plus. The fuel tank is very accessible, I've had no issues with the placement of the front hydraulic lines and the larger wheels/tires have been (probably) a literal life saver on my property, which seems to have plenty of fairly large holes (those holes were hiding under the tall grass....). The machine is so powerful, it frightens me some and I'm still taking things very slowly. The only thing which has annoyed me is, the rubbery/plastic knob on the end of the PTO stick comes off when I need to get forceful with it ( the manual talks about the force needed sometimes to get it "in gear" ...use the clutch and move forwards and backwards a bit), which isn't very often the case. I just put the knob back on. Usually, the PTO lever moves into place with little force. I chalk this up to the fact that I'm on a tractor, and not in a cushy automobile with a $2500 transmission... I do like that I can stand up while driving it because sitting for hours is not only unhealthy, I have some back problems already and I need the variety (I'm pretty sure you have to be on the seat for it to start...dunno for sure, I've never tried otherwise). The adjustable seat and steering column are good for my back, too. Everything has been a fairly steep and awkward learning curve for me -- I've never worked with a grease gun, I've never hooked up a rotary cutter / PTO shaft, all my wrenches were too small ... hahaha....but I believe this will be an excellent purchase which will reward me and outlast me. As far as "RK selling tractors"... well I dunno. Right now, they seem to be selling much faster than they can supply (I received a totally newly assembled tractor... three weeks after I signed finance papers...), and just today, all the rest of my implements are finally available for me to have (about six weeks after signing). I think they made a good choice with King Kutter (I really like the rotary I got, minus one fairly minor issue), but I'm not sure KK's production line was fully ramped up.... new business ventures can be unpredictable and I can see KK holding back major capital deployment until the RK thing really gets going. I don't expect RK to go away and they talk like they are very committed to the tractor thing going forward. It would really piss off the consumer if they suddenly dropped service and maintenance on the tractors five years down the road, regardless of the reason. I think they realize this as fact. As far as price, if you finance a RK tractor with their DLL company for 84 months, you'll pay just as much for the tractor as you will a L3901 at 0% for 84 months. If you pay cash, you will spend several thousand less. Also, I kinda wish I had gone with the hydrostatic transmission, but that may just be a total newb talking ....haha... all in all, so far, I am happy with my tractor and implements. I have sheared several half-inch "pins" in my rotary cutter and the flex-hitch feature has saved several others from being decapitated. Today, I'll get my box-blade and I'll start smoothing out the crazy lumps and bumps on my property.... I don't see how anyone would be disappointed with a RK tractor, even I can tell that "tractor people" designed them and their features and these are very nice features to have! I read somewhere on the WWW that we'll run out of traction before you run out of horsepower and I have found that to be true. I have the R4 "industrial" tires (I'm not plowing fields, I just needed a rugged utility vehicle) and I really like how large (wide and diameter) they are. If anyone posts any questions, I'll try to answer them quickly.

Very well done comparison Mike. Fun Fact: TYM in Korea builds these for RK, and they also build the Mahindra 2500/2600 series (my 2540 is almost identical to your RK37). The key difference is the Mahindra has their own common-rail non-DPF engine, whereas the TYM and RK tractors have Yanmar engines (good stuff). I think the RK is quite a bit heavier than the Kubota as well. Keep up the great work -- you've got quite a following!
Good Job. I run a Mahindra 8560 and have never regretted buying it, i have ~ 400 hours on it in 3 years.
I also use a Mahindra and I think the RK looks and has a lot of the same features as the Mahindra. The only difference is where you put diesel in and I like the adjustable links and stabilizers better on the Mahindra. Other than that RK makes a nice tractor.
Mike, apologies if someone mentioned this already. I too had a big problem with the hydrostatic drive petal when trying to turn and look backwards. Lifting my foot and finding the rear rocker just puts your body in a contorted position that is very uncomfortable and with a lot of tractor work you will be in that position quite often. I discovered a little trick that makes that whole situation better in my opinion. Instead of picking up my foot and using the rear rocker, I simply slide my foot under the front rocker and pull up to reverse the tractor. Its so much easier to me.

Nice comparison Mike. I went to the Rural King website and had much difficulty with it, finally I went to the RK Tractor site and found what I was looking for price and closest RK dealer. Unfortunately for me they do not have a dealership in Wisconsin or within 300 miles. That sort of takes RK out of my options. But thanks again I will continue to watch your videos.
Thanks, I understand now. I should have watched this one first. I do like the added options that aren't options but standard equipment on the RK. I wish my 3901 could lift more. When you add a set of forks, you lose some of that. I need a lighter set of forks. The wife swears I will be buying a new tractor. Great vids, keep them coming. Mike I noticed the RK 39 does not have valve stem protection. Before I bought my Kubota, I had a John Deere that didn’t have valve stem protectors on it and I tore out 2 valve stems while using the loader. I’ve had the Kubota and so for no valve stem repairs. Small thing but down time is huge at times! Thanks for you informative videos. Wayne

From what I see, the RK37 compares much more to the Kubota L3560 then to the L3901 in terms of features. On the other hand, the price tag might be very different.
I own a L3540HST (ROPS) for more than 11 years. I has more than 2500 hours on it and I can say that it's a beast!
At the time it wasn't that expensive and I'm very happy with it.
I make similar use of it than Mike, and it is a very versatile machine. Good in the woods, in the field and on the roads. Also love the HST Plus hydro transmission. Easyer than a car to drive.

Great comparisons Mike. I like kubotas, got a L 2650 with loader and 648 hours. Still going strong even though it is 25-÷30 years old. Im the 2nd owner. But i really like th RK 37. Hope to own one soon. Been seeing good reviews from you and a few others on RUclips. Thanks fir sharing bud.
Good review and walk around compararing the RK and the 3901. I agree with you Mike on likes and dislikes. I especially dislike the RK hoses outside loader frame. The RK has a great price point. I'll be watching for your take on the RK shuttle vs the Kubota hydro.

In my opinion, for the features you have outlined, it is apparent that the RK37 is a superior product. Albeit, it's cost may be quite a bit higher than your Econ model Kubota. I'm about to retire my Ford Jubilee and upgrade to an RK tractor. I first saw them up in their Waverly Ohio store, I live closer to Hillsboro so they're going to get a location here soon I've heard. Mike I bought a Kubota BX23 for my equipment rental fleet, and those troublesome safety switches caused me more than two 'lost rental' deals, when the switches constantly shut down the engine as the operator was trying to work with the tractor, especially on uneven ground.
So I switched over to Kioti,......that was a much better tractor, and my customer's 'loved' it.
I was thinking that Kubota must have found a whole bunch of these micro safety switches somewhere and put them on every model.
It's a good thing that Kubota doesn't make chain saws,..because they'd want to have rubber chains on them, so the operator won't get cut. ( I know that's a bit crazy to say,..but I can tell you it's no fun trying to calm down upset customer's either. Never mind the lost sales.)
I have a bx23 and it’s been switch nightmare.
Kubota and Deere compacts are now at the back of the pack performance, feature and value wise. It's clear that the bean counters at both companies have more authority than they should -- quality and engineering content have noticeably fallen.
Good comparison between tractors. I have a kubota L3901 with 300 hrs and have had no problems with the safety features during heavy brush clearing or regular mowing. My only complaint about the RK mowers is that you can’t take off the front loader like the Kubota - which I like to do when using the finish mower around fences and trees. That being said, I can’t find anything wrong with the RK tractors and they seem to be a pretty good subcompact tractor.
All of your positive comments on the RK37 are the same selling points I was looking for when I was tractor shopping a couple of years ago. Had a John Deere 4100 with the dual pedals and I could not get used to the rocker on the Kubota machines (and a couple other brands). I would up with a TYM 353HST, basically a slightly older model of the RK37. Mine has the 35-hp Mitsubishi 3-cyl. Tier-3 engine. I really like mine but it developed some minor electrical and mechanical problems that I have either bypassed (like a finicky starter relay) or haven't fixed yet (sticky hydrostat pedals). All in all a good machine though.
I would love to have a Rural King near me so that I could at least drool over the new machines, and maybe get parts and service for the machine I have. The nearest TYM dealer up and disappeared last year, so I'm left without a source for parts and service. Maybe the biggest reason not to have bought a TYM and gone with something more 'available' like a Mahindra, Deere or New Holland.
That RK looks like my case 45dx. It’s really a sleek looking unit.

Mike, I'd imaging a lot of your audience is guys like me who use their tractors for more than ag work. I clear areas for foodplots, bushog saplings down, etc. The ONE thing I would like to see compared is the undersides of each tractor, i.e. how will hydraulic lines, cables, wires, fuel tanks, etc... are protected. My Kubota has a flimsy sheet metal pan under the fuel tank (more like Reynolds Wrap) and with less than 100 hrs on it I ran over a hidden T-post, which kicked up and punctured a hole in the fuel tank. The guard offered no resistance whatsoever. Would really love to see a "woods pkg" option available for these tractors, basically an armor pkg for tanks, lines, cables and windows/mirrors (if you have a cab).
A Woods Package? That is an awesome idea and you make a good point, it sounds like you and I use tractors the same way. Not very often am I in an open field with no obstacles lol
Man same here about not being in fields or open areas, I have 58 acres that right now is 100% woods other than the little bit I've cleared for a road with a rental Bobat T595 & my new Kubota MX5200 with the BH92 backhoe attachment . But the MX series is pretty beefy compared to the smaller L series, which is why I weant with that for heavier duty woods work &, I have not been disappointed with it's capability to push huge piles of brush & tree limbs around!
I'm right there with you. Rugged terrain is all I have and I mostly use my tractor to keep the mountain from reclaiming my pastures.

Wow! The loader capacity difference is quite shocking to me. The RK really has an advantage there as I believe it does in many of the other areas you pointed out. Coy pattern l agree with you,! I chose to buy a second hand Kubota 2years ago because of there reliability and available parts , and I can repair most things if need be
How about build quality? I've not yet stopped by my Kubota Stealer, but there is a LOT of plastic on the Rural King Tractors (fenders mostly). Fit and finish on the RK24 hood to instrument panel was horrible, 3/4" gap?!?
Also, when hopping on the RK tractors at my local shop (again, I've not been to my local Kubota/MF dealer yet), I got 'tripped up' with seat adjustment levers, extremely high brake pedals, gear range selectors, etc. Is the Kubota better at the layout of these contols? (I REALLLLLLLLY wanted to get a RK tractor....but...)

We are looking at subs and considering buying one. We have it narrowed down to either going to Clearview mall for the RK24, or Turners for a Massey GC1720.
I don';t have any experience with the Massey, I do really like the RK 24, I say check them both out, Ray at Turners is a great guy, known him for years

Good video, they don't have RK tractors in Canada that I know of, I looked at a Kubota B2650 and a Kioti CK3510SE to replace my old JD 2520. While the Kubota was a bit less, it was like comparing apples and oranges in that the Kubota was smaller in size somewhat, less hp and lift capacity. Each tractor had their good and bad points and I guess I could be happy with either one.
I settled on the Kioti CK3510SE because I felt I was getting more tractor for my money. The other deciding factor and maybe a personal preference but I was used to the 2 pedal HST controls that were in my JD, I found the Kubota setup to be very awkward to use especially in reverse, and when you have a 1000' long driveway and a rear blower, I could see it making a difference. As a side note I did look at a Mahindra not only was it more than both the Kubota and Kioti it just lacked the refinement. Anyone who has wrestled trying to attach a rear blower and appreciate the telescopic and adjustable draft arms that the two orange tractors have over a Mahindra or TYM for that matter.
After this video, Mike is back down to only one tractor. LOL. One thing though on the RK. The rear tire is really close to the top of that fender. If any mud gets built up on the tire ( as this always happened ) it will chew up that fender in a hurry. Durability might be a issue down the road to with the RK.
Hey Mike,From your videos I bought a Rk37. Its new and when the engine goes through its initial start procedure the 4wd indicator light comes on but when I'm running I never see a light come on the dash? I can definitely tell its engaging from 2wd to 4wd with the lever. Does your light come on the dash when you are in 4wd?
No it does not, Im not positive but I think it's like that because most people with that size tractor always have it 4WD 95% of the time and no sense a light being on all the time I guess
Hey Mike I am about to go and buy a new tractor and looking at TYM454, RK37 and L4701. I ask you do you like the HST or Shuttle shift for all around use, I understand if you only did bucket work it would be HST. Appreciate any advice.

I came across your video when trying to find a true comparison between the RK37 and the Kubota L3901. I was really close to pulling the trigger on buying a 3901 until I saw this video. Now that you have had the RK37 for over a year now, if you had to purchase a new tractor after have had used both, in simple terms, which one would you go with? Your honest opinion please.
The RK looks like a fine tractor. You also have to factor in dealer service, repair and distance to a repair shop when buying a tractor. That is the only thing that would make me nervous when buying from a big box store.
Does the RK 37 have off seat PTO capability? I didn't see a description in the manual. You, Mike, may not have a chipper....I do and off seat PTO operation is a necessity

Looking at the tractors side by side the rk looks larger. But I think it is the tire size that does that. A little extra ride height can't be bad.
I am thinking about getting an RK in the near future some time. I want the cab. I have allergies and asthma I have to deal with in hot months. The AC will be important for those issues. On the winter months we have snow to clear, and I dont stay as warm as I used to in my older age of 65. I tend to freeze my ass off putting it bluntly. The question I have is probably obvious now. I am wonder about the cab, the AC, and the heating. I wonder what folks think of these features. Also the finish mower - does it cut the grass up real fine? We use a bagger on our John Deere and I hate that. I've pinched fingers and what not, the bags are heavy, they don't help me with my asthma situation either. I would like to get clear away from baggers. Please let me know your thoughts. When I get one, I will let you know mine.

I have two John Deere tractors and love them both. One is a model 790 which I got in a package deal in 2002, and the other is a model 3032E with the front loader and I like it too, but wish the company had put a step on the right side of the tractor also like some other companies had done. Both tractors have the refill cap and tank on top of the hood which I don't like , and the battery is hard to get to on both tractors, which isn't good. The company didn't learn much through the years. The main difference between the two tractors is the transmissions. The older one has a standard transmission where the new one have the automatic transmission which is better to work with since I don't spend so much time shifting.
I love the connectors on the front of the borrowed tractor you have where you can hook up the grapple, and the connectors on the back where you can connect implements there also. Those are things which John Deere didn't put on my tractors, especially the new one. When you get ready to buy another tractor you might consider the one borrowed.
on the rk tractors with shuttle shift, can you shift through the gears without using the clutch?

You mentioned the lifting capacity between the two tractors and there appears to be a substantial difference even though the hp of both tractors similar. What’s the reason for such a difference? My l3240 is a beefy tractor but I’m a bit disappointed in the lifting capacity. Mine lifts a 1000lbs.
A very important issue for me is resale value, at our local auction if you show up with anything other than kubota

With any new tool or implement, the first thing that I do is disable anything that would prevent is from starting or running. However, as I start looking at 70 on the odometer, I'm starting to look at those safety switches like when I put on the chain saw chaps,, MMM mabe not such a bad idea.
And the best feature that Mike likes about the RK is the price! Kubota cost Mike $ and the RK gets used for FREE. Can't beat that!
Great review Mike. It's hard to find a review by someone not selling one or the other. Have the issues you have with the Kubota been resolved during the two years since you bought the L3901? Everything is based upon price. Is there a big price difference in the two? Thanks.

Is the RK loader as easy to remove as the Kubota?

Another great video Mike. Is the pricing close to the same on both machines? I have a Kubota also and agree with the FEL control being beside the seat instead of where it is. And the HST on the Kubotas is pretty noisy. I do really like my Kubota though.
Hi Herm, The RK as it sits, Shuttle Shift, Loader, Rear Remotes, Everything except third function valve is $19,998.00, Hydro Version is $21,998.00 thats the price at every Rural King that sells Tractors. The 3901 has an MSRP of probably $24,200.00 ? something like that but you could probably negotiate and get a little better deal.
That RK is a lot of tractor for the money. I am looking forward to see more videos on it. Thanks for all you do for us, it is a joy to watch and learn at the same time.

The RK is pretty clearly a clone of the Kubota, which is very smart, as the Standard L series are kind of a gold standard for value-priced Compact Utility. I wouldn't get too wrapped up in numbers, they are going to performed nearly identically. Even the FEL capacities are closer than the listed numbers. Kubota is very conservative in their ratings. In fact, until 3-4 years ago they used to measure FEL's at bucket center, 500 mm infront of the pin which is a much more realistic working loa, but had to go to "at the pin" just because everyone else was. Probably, fit and finish, operator comfort and service/parts availability would be more important than the rated capacities.
Michael Bayerl. I have heard before that Kubota is conservative on their numbers. However after running both there is no question the RK lifts and I would add more comfortably substantially more weight than the 3901. That's not my opinion either, it just does. The Grand series may be a different story but I never had one to know
Good, real world experience. I have a 2002 L3710. It's actually got all of the "grand L" features including the flat operator's deck, better 3pt arms, 4 cyl. engine, suspension seat, and a loader rated to 1900# at bucket center. Kubota has really stripped down their standard L01 series tractors to keep the price competitive.

I’m not a farmer ,never had a tractor, had skid steer , but I’m older now , dark and knees won’t take it , I’m a Harry home owner . I looked at all subcompact tractors . Unless I’m stupid the price of the 37 is very tempting. I have a Kubota zero turn , Lov it . But the price of a 37 hp Kubota, oh my . If I was a farmer with lots of land well . For me I’m not into all that , I just might want to go fishing today and blow of the yard . After this review, I’m still thinking the 37 with a cad , still not sure on the shuttle or the hydro . Not enough experience with it ... I want easy and stupid proof and lazy .
I had a New Holland basically a“LS” before going with Kubota. Kubota is a superior machine For the long Haul. Yanmar makes a great motor. It’s all the little BS That will catches up with that LS ! Kubota’s front loader lift capacity is hurting compared to competition.

i have a BX..... i do think kubota makes an excellent engine and when you buy a kubota everything is kubota. they make their own engines and pretty much everyone else goes to a 3rd party.
Sure, the Kubota lift capacity is lacking. It is. Though. In my experience, in real world applications, the Kubota will be lifting long after even bigger lifters of other brands. Case and point. My tractor has over 300 hours. A friend of mine has over 400 hours. His can lift 300 pounds more than mine. He has also replaced 3 cylinders... I have changed oil and filters.
There are many stories, sure. But in most it is jd and Kubota that keep on with little issue unless abused.
Nice comparison on the two even if they are not in the same class, I just hope free isn't making you say things you really don't believe. The RK do look nice and have nice features, I would just be afraid of parts availability in a few years. Many dealers here have flooded the market with off branded tractors then stopped supporting them with service and parts just ask some Mahindra and TYM owners.
Couple things, Don't worry I never say something I don't believe, besides that I think they are both good tractors, just the RK has some features the 3901 does not. Also I don't think Rural King can really be compared to a single small dealers that pop up here and there. They made a very large investment here and have a huge facility for final assembly and parts, they have over 100 locations and their own trucking company.
