    You guys just witnessed 2 legends. Very few people have the talent, skill and experience as these two. Both are part of families with hundreds of years of Qawaali singing in their bloodline. Rahat's family has over 600 years of qawaali singing tradition, dating all the way back to Persia. His dad's older brother, Nusrat was a trend setter and is considered the King of Qawaali. Rahat's own father was considered the king of the harmonium (a common instrument for Qawaali music) and the best ever. Amjad Sabri's family has a history of Qawaali singing of over 150 years dating back to India before the creation of Pakistan. His 2 older (now deceased) brothers were considered one of the best Qawaali duet's to ever bless the stage. These 2 are Kings of the game. No one even comes close to touching them in this genre.

    So unfortunate you dont know the language. The qawali has a certain context of Sufism and people feel the vibe when they listen and understand it. I know you guys dont feel the connection due to language barriers but still hats off you guys for appreciating other cultures. By the way, urdu in this qawali is not even understood clearly among Urdu speakers. Its very different and bookish
    The other Singer is Amjad Sabri who was shot and murdered last year. He is a Qawali superstar from Pakistan. Rest in peace

      Fizzah Iqbal, Ustad means Maestro in English (in this context obviously). Ustad usually used for Muslim maestros of music because ustad is a urdu word, and Pandit is the exact same thing for Hindu musical maestros.
      And for foreigners to understand it, its a Title that is rarely EARNED by anyone and its really very big deal, its like getting knighthood for their capabilities and immense contributions towards the art field.

    This form of singing is called Qawaali... Mainly meant for devotional purposes to access the deeper or higher levels of consciousness during spiritual practices. The singers are called Qwaals and this was introduced in India by a Persian mystic and a poet called Amir Khusro. The idea is to employ repetition through out the singing by the lead singer which is followed up by chorus.
    In this song Amir Khusro is praising and celebrating his spiritual master for showing him the path. This is his attempt to please the God through his spiritual master.

    Nusrat fateh ali khan, was rahat fateh ali khans teacher, and uncle. NFAK, was perhaps the biggest musician out of pakistan. Nobody did qawwali better than him.
    Also this qawwali, Rang is hard to understand because the poetry is very ancient, and some words in it are not commonly used. This Qawwali was written and composed by Amir Khusro who lived in the 13th century. I personally need to turn on the subtitles to understand it and I'm a native urdu speaker.
    Qawwali when done right is a very deep experience. I have seen people fainting when listening to live qawwali, and totally losing their senses and minds.
    I listen to a lot of death and extreme metal, but on the other hand Qawwali is as much explosive and energetic and more melodious.

    I have some information that might make this more interesting for you. It may be that you already know this or other people might have told you this already. This is qawwali proper. Since Coke Studio aims to pander to a much younger audience, they don't do such traditional pieces without any modern instrumentation very often. I think this is one of the only times they've done something so bare.
    Anyway, the qawwali you just heard, Rang (literally, color) goes back at least 800 years and is attributed to the South Asian Sufi musician, poet, scholar, and astronomer Amir Khusrau (1253-1325) who is also credited with inventing the genre of qawwali. In fact, all the qawwals (qawwali singers) descend from him, including Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri. In a traditional-style qawwali gathering (known as the mehfil-i sama'a, which means the gathering of audition), Rang is the qawwali that you end the evening with, and every member of the audience stands up in respect. The evening starts with "hamd" (praise of God), then "na'at" (praise of the Prophet Muhammad), then goes on to the "qawl" (saying) of Imam Ali, who is one of the first sages of Islam, and to whom all Sufi orders trace their lineage. Qawwali for them is not just singing, it's a form of prayer. Before they get on stage, they perform the ritual ablution which is required to cleanse your body before praying.
    What makes this particular rendition even more interesting is that the uncle of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (you might wanna look him up, he's big), and the father of Amjad Sabri, Ghulam Farid Sabri (he's big as well) sang the same qawwali together at a Sufi shrine in Karachi, Pakistan. So this was a kind of tribute to family for them as well. Amjad Sabri was shot and killed last year. This was his first Coke Studio appearance and his last ever recorded performance which was released posthumously.
    I loved your reaction! It was so pure. I could see the way your eyes sparkled. Keep it up, and all the best.

      Uzair Ibrahim i don't understand the weird part on this comment like do they really do wuddo before singing "with instruments" and it's a kind of prayer for them? Wtf 😯😓

    • @uzairibrahim_
      @uzairibrahim_ 6 лет назад +2

      Because the qawwali mehfil starts with hamd and naat, it makes sense that they'd do wuzu, dont you think?

  • @arsalansheikkh
    @arsalansheikkh 6 лет назад +1

    This is the purest form of traditional Qawwali without any mix of other genres. You guys must know that this is what Qawwali actually sounds like. Qawwali is connected to Sufism and that's why it is performed seated in the respect of what is sung, which is mostly about God, Prophets, Saints, love & spirituality. It is performed in a group. The background of this qawwali "Rang" (Colours) is that this qawwali was performed years ago in a collaboration by two masters of qawwali the most popular qawwals(qawwali singers) Late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Late Ghulam Farid Sabri. CokeStudio brought the two musical families together again in this song with the collaboration of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (Nephew of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) & Amjab Sabri (Son of Ghulam Farid Sabri) R.I.P. Thanks to CokeStudio for this Master Piece.
    P.s. Please don't forget to say my name if you mention my comments again. Love from Pakistan!!!

    This is indeed a beautiful rendition. This composition was originally done by Ustad NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN along with SABRI BROTHERS. And this rendition is beautifully done by RAHAT FATEH and AMJAD SABRI who r considered successors of the legendary signers mentioned before.
    The legendary vibe of FATEHs and the madness of SABRIs is being reminded in this song. But the original masterpiece remains untouched. It saddens to remember that AMJAD SABRI is no more among us but his voice leaves impression forever lasting. U guys dont know the language yet u r enjoying what if u knew what this meant u would be in trance as i am. Thanks for the reaction brothers. Peace

    It is said that Qawwali brings an effect of trance to its listeners. I guess that is proven by this reaction. It also releases a lot of tension so that people can relax from every day stresses. As you said it unleashes a lot of energy, also in the listener so that people can relate to this emotion and feel free. Its pure ecstasy and heals a lot of disgrunteled hearts. Thankyou so much. The credit also goes to you guys for having a deep understanding of this culture and being so respectful to it. I really appreciated this reaction. You guys are pure and beautiful human beings. "Rang" means colour in Urdu. Qawwali is always aimed at creating a deep spiritual connection with the listeners, taking them into a trance. By doing so the qawwal (i.e. the person who is singing the qawwali) hopes to develop a connection with God and become part of the oneness of the universe.

    I suggest u guys watch your own video ..it might help all the west to understand how ppl from Indian subcontinent have bobble heads .. xD
    And yes Indians and Pakistanis can understand and love eachothers music and songs .. in case anyone is wondering ..
    Music is one of the few things which we like about eachother.

    BTW these are two of the biggest houses of qawwals in Pakistan maybe even the subcontinent, their ustads performed this qawwali about 30 years ago together and these two came back together to honor that, its the same qawwali but both houses have their unique style and flavour in it, sadly amjad sabri left us shortly after this but his legacy lives. The back and forth between the two is called juugul bundi and qawwals always sit while performing. Watch the link i sent in my other comment you will see. The qawwali is something to get lost in, a qawwal and his party will go up down, slow fast just to create that atmosphere of trance and the head bobbing and clapping comes natural to the audience.

    Look at you guys! Look how far you've come since that first coke studio reaction a few months ago haha. This wasn't even the easier to digest fusion music that Coke Studio does- this was pure, no holds barred qawwali. And looks like you guys are starting to see the appeal. It's amazing that you guys appreciated it so much without even knowing the language when even over here, there are some people who find stuff like this beyond their comprehension.
    Of course, this is a pretty darn good qawwali. When legends like Amjad Sabri & Rahat Fateh Ali Khan come together, you know you're in for a treat.
    Tragically though, Amjad Sabri was shot dead shortly after recording this. Such a loss for us. May his soul rest in peace.

    LATE Amjad Sabri son of Ghulam Fareed Sabri was one huge star, came from a well known background from a family of Qawwals. And then there is Rahat nephew of Ustad Nusrat Fateh another huggggggggggge starrrr. Such a master piece they did and happy for the part they did together. May Allah grant Amjad eternal peace in the life afterwards. Ameen.

    Hey Robin and Jesper, It is nice to see that you are getting into Pakistani music and begin to understand the qawwali. I'm amazed you both comprehended it without even knowing the language. I would suggest you to learn URDU Language it is one of the sweetest language on the face of the earth and then you will enjoy such qawwali more.
    GOOD LUCK TO YOU GUYS.

Im sure if Amjad Sabri was alive today and saw ur reaction he would have flown all the way to where you two were and just hugged you guys. He was really that friendly and cool. R.i.P Amjad Sabri. he was taken away too soon from us. Not with us anymore but still a living legend in our hearts.
