This is a qawali its usally about 30 to and hour long
Its is sufi music trandional
It's not a mashup. Qawwalis are usually 30 mins long, and coke studio has compressed it to 10 mins, while still maintaining the essence of the original.
The Rang is always performed at the end of a full qawwali program which lasts 4-5 hours.
It’s the same song, but as you can tell the beat increases throughout the song. Fascinatingly, this was originally performed by Rahat fateh Ali Khans uncle - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and amjad sabris father and uncle - the Sabri Brothers. This was a tribute to them and a beautiful one at that.
It's quite skilful.
RIP Amjad Sabri Saab. You gave the world so much beauty and joy and love. We will forever be grateful for the legacy you left behind.
It is a qawwali, a traditional Sufi poetry dating hundreds of years back.
It is usually sung like an icing on the cake towards the end of Qawwali sessions.
The Qawwali was written by Amir Khusro in respect of the Sufi saint Nizamuddeen Auliya. He visited Khwaja Nizamuddeen Auliya's Dargah(like a shrine) and came back and told the story to his mother.
As summary..
Amir Khusro says that he has travelled far and wide, even to foreign lands. But never has he seen such a color as in the Khwaja's Dargah. The color is so great that he is not able to remove it from him even after returning home.
Color being symbolic of light, the wisdom and enlightenment.

This song is like a bird flying and enjoying and then landing suddenly like an eagle on a peak
Qawallis will build up slowly in tempo, intended to take you into a trance with the music. In fact, this version due to Coke Studio construct, builds up a bit too fast. If you watch a more traditional qawalli performance, e.g. Nusrat Ali Khan, or the Sabri brothers, they may build it up over half an hour or so, the tempo getting faster and faster until it fairly whizzes along.
Then right at the end, there´s a sudden drop and repeat of the slow start.
Qawalis were spiritual in nature and sung at shrines of Sufi saints, hence taking the audience on their mystical journey and back...

more legendary is that this is just rehearsal because Amjad sabri was assassinated before final performance so coke studio release this version to pay tribute. as you can see both artists give signals to eachother to tell now its your turn and this whole quwali was filmed is single take
Its a same song but this part of the world sings differently.. They are legends and they know how to sing a same song in different tones and notes.. This is what they do the best. Singing.
Amjad Sabri who sang Rang with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was shot dead by Talibans. This was his last performance. Sad that I have to tell you this. :(

This is actually a song written by a disciple for his teacher. About 700+ years ago.
There are many versions of this particular song, every one unique from the other. I'd like to see you reach to more version of this.

By the way these names throughout Sufi songs (that's what this music is called, mystic, religious) are names of Sufi Saints and 'Peer' means Master, Teacher, Spiritual Guide etc. Nizammudin Auliya, Farid Ud Din Auliya, Amir Khusrou (inventor of qawalli style of music you're listening to) and others. They are known for their teachings, poetry and love for God.
Nizamuddin Auliya and Allauddin Sabir Kaliyari are the ones mentioned most.
This song was written by Amir Khusrau in poetry form (poets often refer to themselves as a muse) . He lived in the 13th century, and you can tell in the song by the language. It's not modern Hindi/Urdu, but an older ancestor.
