This was recorded before Amjad Sabri's death and released after his death. Presumably his last performance. It's a very special performance as both Rahat And Amjad come from different families of Qawals, and this is their first public performance together. It is said that Rahat's Uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad's father Ghulam Fareed Sabri also performed together the same qawaali at a private function at a dargah, which wasn't recorded.
As a Coke Studio performance, it was one of those rare performances which was recorded in first take and was Amjad's only performance in Coke Studio
Also, the Allah at 10:44 is the signature of Sabri Family of Qawaals

Carl, you remember reacting to Tajdar-e-Haram by Atif Aslam? In the video you stated it was a tribute to the Sabri Brothers. The Sabri brothers, like Aziz Mian and Nusrat were a legendary duo of Sufi Qawaali music. Amjad Sabri was from that lineage of legends. It's very sad that a few years ago he was assassinated by an extremist gang in his home city of Karachi. They proclaimed that the music he sang was against the teachings of the Qu'ran. It was an extremely sad day, and Pakistan retaliated by obliterating the entire gang. They are all either on death row, already hanged or serving life in prison.

In all its melodramatic glory, and approximately 40 years ago, a shrine echoed with the sound of a traditional qawwali performed in an epic collaboration by the maestros, Ghulam Farid Sabri with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The divine kalaam of Amir Khusro - ‘Rang’ - soared through the skies. In what has been deemed as the most anticipated performance of Coke Studio’s Season 9, the two families return to the platform for the first time since, as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri collaborate to perform the very track, four decades later.

What you just witnessed was a vocal masterclass, Amjad was light years ahead of anyone. Rahat is in complete awe of him when he takes the track into another realm, pay attention to the pain in his soul which most people miss, you have to surrender your judgement and trust as this requires a certain amount of spiritual wealth and courage, the ability to break your spine through tone is what sets him apart, not his face or his vocal chords its something way deeper they've tapped into another frequency that cant be explained by modern science.

  • @spdcrzy

YESSSSSSS I haven't even watched the video yet but I'm SO happy you finally reacted to this.
Edit: Amjadji was probably one of the last great traditional qawwals, and he will be sorely missed. That sort of thick, layered, powerful voice is the consequence of being trained to sing with complete control over your voice while still having to project to an audience of hundreds or thousands without a microphone. And yet he was murdered for not being traditional enough.

He was not assasinayed by taliban, he was assasinted by political goons and it was a political murder. He had switched loyalties politically and gained alot of enemies. The taliban story was a failed coverup story. Both these singers are equivalent to opera singers of the west. They start training at 3 years of age. The best thing about amjad sabri was that he would take youth of the streets and train them as qawaals so they would stay of the streets and drugs and instead earn from thier talent. He is truly missed.

This kind of music comes from the genre of ‘Sufi’ singing, much prevalent in the 15th and the 16th century..........devotional music dedicated to God by the Sufi saints. Sufi style of singing is pretty much the same as Bhajan singing in Hinduism and choir / hymn singing in Christianity. Beautiful, rich and intense.........that’s the feel you get from this particular song and all in praise of the Divine being.❤️

The poetry is written by Ameer Khusraw in memory of his patron saint in India, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliaya. Ameer Khusraw invented tabla, most of the classical RAAGs used in qawwalis and other genres. RANG means the shade of love. This simiie can also be used for lover/beloved relationship and for divine love as well. The both loves are intermingled in this qawwali. Google Ameer Khusraw/Khusrow and you will learn about his poetic, rhythmic, linguistic skills that he contributed to the early Hindustani language (now Urdu and Hindi). When Ameer Khusraw learned about the death of his patron Saint in Ajmer (India) he became heart broken and wrote: Gori soye sej pey mukh pe dale kais- Chal Khusraw ghar apne sanjh bhai chawndes. A rough translation could be: The beloved is sleeping on his bed with hair on her face: O Khusraw, let us go home as there is darkness all around. His mausoleum is inside his patron Saint's compound in Ajmer, India. Kindly correct me if any of what I have written is not accurate.

Both Rahat and amjad sabri come from singing families.
Rahat got taught by the legend nusrat fateh ali khan, who was a music professor at Washington university. And rahats voice has matured from the earlier days.
Amjad has a unique voice and he can also like rahat do from deep to high pitch EFFORTLESSLY!. 2 legends continuing the legacy of their fathers and uncles. It's so sad the way amjad was assassinated. Absolutely heartbreaking

Love your reactions. Please react to 'Nescafe Basement - Sweet Child of Mine.' You know, these guys are already established legends so I see no point in 'vocal analysis' if you know what I mean. Nescafe, on the other hand, brought these college kids forward from Pakistan and showcased their talent which is where I think your analysis will hold water. Again, I like watching your videos. Keep it up. Regards.

@carljohnfranz Thank you for highlighting these incredible singers , they both come from multi-generational singers and have been lighting this world with their talent since the 1900s. The voice richness comes from being brought up in the house of singing legends and since childhood they both have been training... It's very interesting to read up on their families the Sabri and the Fateh Ali Khan

🇩🇪from Germany:- Waw Carl 😳I Wunder how much you understand this old kind of South Asian music. Even you understand the face expirations and vocal mussels as well the ALAP and RAG. And I wunder how much you know about over singers. Even many of over younger generations boys and girls don’t know about them. I appreciate this very much 👍🏻. And yes we Pakistanis are very proud that over country has too much talent. Like Abida Parveen, Nusrat Fateh Ali, Rahat Fateh, Sabri Brothers, Aziz Mian, Marvi, Asad Amant Ali, Noor Jahan, Gholam Ali and you can name it....!
Yes Coke Studio is doing a very big job 👍🏻👍🏻. They are making fusion with old songs with new music and new style. This combination is more then perfect 👌🏻. Even I am a Coke Studio addict 😊.
Dear Carl you impressed me very much. So I am going to subscribe you and I am going to clicking the bell baton. God bless you my dear. And long life Pakistan 🇵🇰.
