Between the vandelay industries tee and the reference to being a "no wallet person" I was thinking Seinfeld the whole time haha. "I've put off a lot of wallet weight and I don't intend to put it back on!" This is such a sweet build by the way. Also, circle template, so slick, so obvious, good idea.
You can buy a bare charging circuit for $10. Without the extra charger case material, you’ll get better range, and it’ll still be hidden under the desktop to keep it safe.
I'd also consider filling the routed out section with a thin layer of epoxy. I would think 1/16" of resin on the back of the wood would help protect it in case you happen to accidentally drop a book or something on just the wrong place.
What type of router did you use for this project? I am want to build this for my next desktop but I'm not sure which router to get, a plunge router or a fixed base one.
brilliant idea and very well hidden but as wireless chargers expand as you say, what are the chances that they will be the same diameter pad as the cutout that has been done
OMG, you stole my idea! I am building the ultimate gaming desk in the fall and this was exactly what I wanted to do. Since I want to route not only a charger into the desk, but other wired accessories such as USB ports on the side of the desk surface, I will be using MDF with a veneer on it (likely walnut). The charger and cables will be epoxied in, so my downfall will be that it won't be upgradeable. This is PERFECT information for me. Thank yo so much!
Yeah yeah, typical high quality skills and production quality, but let's talk about the real star of this video... That Vandelay Industries t-shirt... Gotta have it.
Are you planning or considering to mark the magic spot on the top or leave it totally hidden? Seems like it could be a fun way to integrate an inlay or some pyrography to make a subtle mark on the target.
Clever idea. Maybe you could go thinner again with a smaller circle to help the signal, without thinness over the whole 3.5” area? I suggest this may allow you to case up again.
I noticed you ran your router down your fence on the flat edge. You should use the round side so you don't accidentally change your distance since the radius doesn't change. If you wobble that flat side it could mess with your line. I'm not sure if your festool router has a runner that sits in that groove or not. Keep up the awesome videos!
Thanks Justin. While I actually prefer running the flat edge against the guide, I'm not sure it makes all that much difference. As long as you're keeping good pressure against the fence the router should ride true. A round edge can come away from the guide just as easily as a flat edge if you're not paying enough attention. And just to be a little nitpicky :), remember that many routers have bases that are not perfectly centered with respect to the center point of the bit. If the bit is slightly off-center and you rotate while routing, you could end up with minor imperfections in the groove. At least with the flat, I know it's consistent because there's no chance of rotation. Don't get me wrong though, nothing nothing wrong with running the round edge. Just defending the reasons why I prefer the straight edge.
Hot glue tends to unstick quite nicely when rubbing alcohol is applied, but getting it underneath there (especially with the top mounted) could be difficult. Also, the thickness of the hot glue will push the charging coil away slightly. Setting the coil into the recess, then securing it in at the edges with a few dabs of hot glue should keep it closer to the surface, be easier to spray alcohol on to un-stick when needed, and hold it tight then glue, rather than rushing to stick it in before the glue starts to set.
Cool video Marc! Interested to hear how you go locating the charger. From my experience that's where it can become tricky, it's easy to miss it by a hair and you end up sliding the phone around looking for it
Cool idea, i think i would need something like a mark, or even cooler, an inlay to remind me where to place my phone...I'd forget where it goes ha ha👌👍
Nothing wrong with putting some kind of inlay or design on the top. I didn't bother since the wood grain is pretty distinct. Makes it very easy to memorize the sweet spot.
Yo can make a test in a pvc panel ??? I have one of 3/4 inch and i need to know wath thickness i need to made this project possible. Thanks and see you later .
gjnmwg1 this is what I was going to say. IF the phone can charge face down (and I would have to assume it can) the. That would potentially negate the case as a factor unless it has a large front lip like an otter box. Face down probably wouldn't be a big deal for a guy with an Apple Watch and a Mac computer because any messages that come in can be replicated on either of those screens.
When I got a phone with wireless charging I loved the idea. Then reality set in. It is inefficient and slow. Because it is inefficient the charger generates more heat which in turn wears the battery out quicker. Also the farther away the phone is from the coil, the less charge it will get as well. Now I am happy with my USB C cable and quick charging.
That matches exactly my experience. I was so excited about wireless charging, that i ordered a wireless charger along with the phone. Now i never use it.
I just put my phone on my wireless charger when I work and slow as it is, my phone is always near 90% charge. It does wear the battery but for me the simplicity of it is worth it. I do use cable when I need to charge quickly or at night.
This has already been said, but I took the charging out of the plastic (or whatever) before mounting it under the table. But I mean, wireless charging is awesome and should be used in every application possible. Ha. I love seeing this and it's incredible to just lay your phone down in a spot and it's charging. Without something to identify it to another person, it makes it like a spy desk or something. 👍
I don't use for long periods and if I feel it heating up too much I'll stop charging. It's really just meant for a quick boost while I'm answering emails and stuff.
Something about taking that thing out of the manufacturer's case and then embedding it in wood makes me nervous. Nervous due to cautious ignorance, mind you. :)
Fully understandable, and not something that I would recommend to your viewers if I were you, but it would greatly improve the charging. What is also something to consider is the fact that, even tho the iphone is "charging" doesnt necessarily mean that it is charging at the full 7.5W at the distance you get through the wood, or even when using a thick case.
Yeah I'm ok with that. Normally my phone just sits on my desk doing nothing. The wireless charging is there just to give it a little boost of juice if needed while I'm working.
Honestly, just go for it. Nothing too complicated in there. Check out iFixit for some teardowns. As long as you protect the coil and PCB from damage once in the desktop you'll be fine.
Actually, inductive circuits have been around for decades so not really new technology. One thing to consider is even though the phone charges through the thinner wood doesn't mean the charge rate won't be affected. I would bet it may be slower. Would be interesting to test that....
Inductive circuits may have been around but consumer-level phone charging is pretty new and will likely drive innovation in the space as consumer demand increases.
I think you guys might be getting stuck on my exact words and missing my point. Just because the technology exists, doesn't mean anything is going to happen with it until it's in consumers' hands. When people want it, the technology will evolve faster. I obviously misspoke by saying that the technology is "new" if you're taking my words verbatim. I hope you understand what I was trying to say. Regardless of when the technology was invented, what matters here is how fast consumers adopt the technology allowing companies to innovate more aggressively. In many ways, the technology is just starting to take off.
I don't think anyone is arguing that this is the final iteration of this tech, but the "newness" of it. There is a tendency by some in the apple universe to ignore something until apple uses it then claim it is "new" when others have been using it for several years. Wireless charging is quite like the Betamax vs VHS story, the consumer has pretty much spoken, The Qi standard has won, for now, with no devices supporting the other standards being released (according to the wiki in my previous post)
In Brad's video, it seemed to work with 1/8" thick wood *and* a thick case. Wasn't an iPhone, though. I think it was some Android device. I bet this is very phone-specific.
My case is also more than just a thick case. It houses three credit cards that sit right in front of the phone's charging area. Could have been a contributing factor.
Fair. I had a phone with wireless charging for years and it did well even with thick cases. My iPhone X is not as forgiving, I've found. I think Apple spent more time thinking thin than thinking about an efficient coil. :)
had 2 phones with wireless charging, both got kinda hot when charging, hot enough that it would probably degrade the battery if you used it daily over a long time, like a year, so i stopped using it and switched over to a magnetic cable dock
I don't use wireless as a primary means of charging. I use it for little boosts here and there so if it charges a little slower, I'm OK with that. Alternatively it wouldn't be charging at all during that time.
"Nice job. Totally invisible" is nice, but how do you locate it? I'd place an "aesthetically pleasing" wood inlay on the desktop to help position the phone.
Researching power options to do this with nightstand for my wife. Have you played or researched this again since making this one? Curious what's our there and legit. Found one that claimed 2" reach that was a scam and another that seemed legit. Not going that thick but trying to not have a pin hole sweet spot too.
This is so bad idea on so many levels... The bigger the gap, the less efficient charging. The less efficient charging, the more energy is wasted on heat. The heat + enclosed space + wood = fire. Search for "qi charger fire" and see what may happen when it fails. If you keep it on desk you can see the warning signs of it failing, hidden inside - you may only see smoke.
The space actually isn't enclosed at all. It's in the open section of the desk, right above my knee. For the amount that I use the charger, I can easily tell if it gets too warm and starts to become an issue. I'm not using this for overnight charging or anything.
I sure would hate to take that top off 2 years later to use my router. This makes me think of using some type of slide in cover to hold the charger in place.
"if you're a thick case user like me, because I'm an anti-wallet person and I like to just have my essentials on me at all times and don't want to carry the wallet, im kinda screwed either way'...wtf does the wallet have to do with your thick phone case?
I dislike wireless charging. It consumes more power than the wired option. I hope everyone will not switch to wireless charging because of the huge power consumption gap it would create in our society. Plus, it's not that convinient compared to a wired charging deck IMO.
It's mostly popular with people who have oodles of devices and don't want to take the time to plug in each one, or people who forget to plug in but always put their device in the same spot. Also a good option in some shared spaces, like restaurants and libraries. You can charge your phone without having to handle a grubby cord or worry that somebody put a malicious device on the other end.
Its not new technology.. its been there for almost ten years. Just because apple has it in its phone, it does not make it new. The first phone to have wireless charging was Nexus 4 and Galaxy phones always had wireless charging.
New technology? I did this 5 years ago in my desk for my Nokia 920. Its a bad idea, when the next generation comes out, the charger will be obselete. You're permanently weakening the desktop for 24 months of use.
I once made the mistake of buying a desk with wired-in stuff for electronic devices. Not only did the technology change, everything about the fit also changed making this custom channel idea for the cord and disc shape a really stupid idea. To integrate a custom shape to a major structural element of any piece of furniture it has to serve a timeless purpose. One that would not likely change. I have a drawerfull of out dated and redesigned accessories for just my phones alone. A custom crafted desk is a future family heirloom. Make the charger hidden in a drawer with an insert that can be lifted out so any upgraded charger holder can be easily remade to fit the new style. Run the power cord inside and out the back, or adaptable so it can run straight down to a floor plug under the desk if the desk sits in the middle of the floor
I didn't build this desk for future generations, I built it for me. That means it needs to work for me, today. Nothing I've done to this desk is likely to be outdated any time soon: 110v power, USB power, and wireless charging. And if I ever need to remove the wireless charger, I can do so without impacting the desk's appearance or function at all.
The Wood Whisperer well then you need to clarify this up front. There are thousands of woodworking channels on RUclips and you are by far the most well rounded in professional content, organization and presentation. This is your product, your business. Dont get sloppy. You have always been good at 'splainin stuff, breaking down complex woodworking considerations into the whys and wherefores of what went into your design and technique and why it was worth my time to watch. If this was custom designed just for your desk for this specific device then say so. Explain that the concept may need to be scrapped when the technology changes. You'll have the desk a lot longer than the phone technology
I specifically explained that in the video twice and alluded to it when I installed the charger with hot glue. Not really sure what further explanation is needed.
The charger is mounted with hotglue... Meaning it can be pulled out at any time. If future chargers are smaller, great it will still fit in the hole if he chooses to upgrade the charger. If chargers get larger he can make the hole to fit the new charger. Furniture doesn't need to last a hundred years, it needs to serve the purpose it's built for. If he decides to buy a phone without the feature or to stop using it, he can pull the charger out and no one would notice unless they look under it. Maybe everything you make you want to last forever.. but chances are your great great grandkids are not even going to need a desk at the rate technology is advancing. He needed a desk to fit him right now.

i thought kinda the same thing :)
why keep all that plastic on it if it's in the table
Ya take that thing apart that's what I had to do with mine
yep my thoughts exactly
I'd also consider filling the routed out section with a thin layer of epoxy. I would think 1/16" of resin on the back of the wood would help protect it in case you happen to accidentally drop a book or something on just the wrong place.
Link? I googled this and couldn't find it.
boy, your desk is marvellous. do you have an video in which you show how you built it? thanks man! 👍
Wow 😲 so much information in only four minutes 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 you are the best Marc 👌🏻
Thank you, sir!
What straight edge clamp are you using with the router for the dado?
What type of router did you use for this project? I am want to build this for my next desktop but I'm not sure which router to get, a plunge router or a fixed base one.
Another great video Marc. Could be the reason I have been along for this entire ride!
brilliant idea and very well hidden but as wireless chargers expand as you say, what are the chances that they will be the same diameter pad as the cutout that has been done

Anyone know how thick of material a charger can effectively go through?
Yeah yeah, typical high quality skills and production quality, but let's talk about the real star of this video... That Vandelay Industries t-shirt... Gotta have it.
Are you planning or considering to mark the magic spot on the top or leave it totally hidden? Seems like it could be a fun way to integrate an inlay or some pyrography to make a subtle mark on the target.
Hey man, great demo for hiding a charger do you have any updates to share? Also wondering where you got the Vandelay Industries shirt??
That's so awesome! Can't wait for the chargers to get better and be able to have greater distance
Clever idea. Maybe you could go thinner again with a smaller circle to help the signal, without thinness over the whole 3.5” area? I suggest this may allow you to case up again.
Give me available link of the charger plz

How do you remove it?
I disassembled a charger and placed the circuits in a homemade car dock. you could probably get better range if you did something similar.

Very cool feature for the desk. Digging the new logo! - Jim
Thanks brother!
The Wood Whisperer any time!
I know your desk is already done, but it would be pretty cool to inlay the power symbol on top of it.
Complimenti!! Bellissimo sistema!! Buon lavoro! Ciao Andrea
How about making the wood even thinner and reinforcing it with a piece of glass?
Fredrik Rambris nice idea 💡
Awesome work Marc! 👍👊
Thanks Fred!
I made a hole in my table i regret it now is there a way to restore the hole

Nope. The metal in the battery blocks the rf.
Super idea and useful information. Thanks.
I think this is something Vandelay industries would be interested in manufacturing in latex.
Maybe a good collaborative project along with Kramerica Industries.
Definitely, once they put the finishing touches on the oil bladder.
@@woodwhisperer I'll get my intern, Darren, working on this immediately.
Great idea. Never thought of that.
Great quick video! Loving the new logo!
Very cool! Something EVERYONE needs.

Love your channel. And I love Seinfeld. Love the shirt. " vandelay Industries" where did you get it?
That was just an Amazon.com purchase. amzn.to/2ouvTDv
Good points to ponder.
Are you concerned at all with heat? Heat and fire safety seem to come up a lot in the discussions I've read on this type of charger.
I don't use for long periods and if I feel it heating up too much I'll stop charging. It's really just meant for a quick boost while I'm answering emails and stuff.
The Wood Whisperer Makes sense to me. I'll probably end up doing it regardless. And if my shop burns down... that's what insurance is for lol
Taking the coil out of the charger-case would also help quite a bit.

Awesome t-shirt my dude!
And you wanna be my late salesman... 😂😂
Watching your videos makes me wish that you still made regular free content.
Great shirt Marc
Nice I have been wanting to do this for some time
I like the idea, but I also like being able to move my charger around, so I don't know if I would want this in my desk
Buy another charger. :)
Link to the phone case you’ve got?
No seriously. Great build an’ all. Phone case tho? 😂
amzn.to/2PrlVyX
The Wood Whisperer Thanks! Seriously, you rock, Marc. Can’t wait to see the whole desk video.
It might charge, but the charging time is probably going to get way longer, as the phone is going to be further away from the charging coil.
I don't use wireless as a primary means of charging. I use it for little boosts here and there so if it charges a little slower, I'm OK with that. Alternatively it wouldn't be charging at all during that time.

Great video Marc ! Has anyone ever told you that when y’all have a bear led and wear glasses that you and bob clagett look alike ?
"Nice job. Totally invisible" is nice, but how do you locate it? I'd place an "aesthetically pleasing" wood inlay on the desktop to help position the phone.
the wood grain makes it easy to memorize the location.
How about drilling a bunch of holes
Researching power options to do this with nightstand for my wife. Have you played or researched this again since making this one? Curious what's our there and legit. Mabe try a piece of lexan with a thin layer of vinier glued on to it
Love the shirt!!
haha one of my favorites!
Might there have been a better solution than hot glue since we know the device will need replacing one day? Some small clips perhaps?
Hot glue is a pretty weak bond in this application.
nice idea
I might have put the glue on the back of the charger I think... Especially if you really think someone would swap it out
Great idea and thanks for doing the dirty ( calculations) work for us lol.
2 years later, hasn't changed much!😂
Fix this build that used 1/8 and it seemed to charge through, wonder if species matters
very cool

cdbsk The case may have something to hold cards and/or money.
it's a case that holds a couple credit cards and ID.
I found that phones charge more quickly if I plug the Qi charger into an iPad charger instead of a phone charger.
Tablet chargers can usually deliver about twice the current, so that makes sense.
Neat!
Nice
