      But what happens if you sleep in and don’t open the tap won’t it build pressure once the bypass valve senes hot water closes then what no one’s there to open the hot tap ??
      I understand the dedicated return line the pumps are on the cold inlet with desecrated line from the farthest fixture once it feels hot water in the pump the pump shuts of integrated in the pump

    We have a slab foundation where plumbing installed. Insulated, but probably not but minimum. Our 50 gal builder model has water heater is 8 yrs old. We plan to buy a newer gas model and install because I’m sure that builder model heater won’t last much longer. The gas water heater is located in the garage, elevated 18”, behind a door per code for our state. If the heater fails it will seep water into the bedroom closet next to garage. We had this occur once before and insurance did an inadequate cleaning of carpets and repair. We had toxic mold in the house. Expensive remediation. We waste a lot of water waiting for shower or tub to be filled with warm, then hot water. I’m positive tested for toxic mold now. One of many health challenges. Teacher husband in ignorant state so retirement funds will severely cut income. I’m on social security disabled. Lost my exec career due to ignorant physicians who knew nothing about diagnosing Lyme Disease. My mission has been to educate next generation of physicians. Hold earned doctorate, not medical doctor, but so knowledgeable I lectured on tick, mosquitoes, fleas, 14 types of diseases now until no longer physically able. He retires next year with huge monthly medical costs due to my disabling, serious, ultimately fatal diseases. Can not afford to replace on retirement income, so doing while we get a tax refund. We have a terribly cold master shower and bath. The master sink faucets are the truly farthest from our garage. Do you have recommendations for me Legacy Handyman re what brand, type of gas water heater to buy, recirc pump as you describe in video or another option. Please help us spend our little remaining cash wisely. Thank you.

  • @paulgill7222

    It's always best if you could run separate return lines instead of using the cold line and insu.ate them. It will be instant hot for the sink where you installed the valve, but other sinks and showers will still be a bit of a wait, depending where and how far the original connections were made

    Did you use a heat trap in the anode rod before you installed the pump? I'm doing the same install on my Bradford White, the old anode rod has a heat trap installed but I'm replacing it with a new anode rod & heat trap but I'm unsure if I should use the new heat trap or not? Your thoughts please. Thanks!

    • @LegacyHandyman

      The heat trap was pre-installed on my water heater and I didn't change it , however when I was doing it it was a fairly new water heater. So if your unit is older I think 7$ investment will not hurt. But I don't know if those go bad .

    Great video! Question: Does the pump have to go at the hot water heater, or can it go under the same sink as the bridge valve (or anywhere else in the hot-water line between the heater and the valve)? I would think the location (beginning or end of the same water-line) wouldn't matter where in that line the pump goes, no? Thanks!

    • @LegacyHandyman
      @LegacyHandyman  3 года назад +1

      yes this will work for both, because it will get hot water much closer to your shower. it will cut your wait time and as a result water consumption. I was thinking of installing one of these systems at my mom's but am hesitant as when you get hot water to the tap, the valve under the sink stops the recirculation. I hope you can answer this. I know this video is older. My pump works fine - but at the sink where I installed the faucet, it sounds like water is running all the time. It’s not leaking anywhere that I can tell. Should it be making that sound?

    • @LegacyHandyman
      @LegacyHandyman  2 года назад

      I don't think it should make any sound, and it is a little bit hard to troubleshoot issues remotely. I can only think of air in the line, try to open the faucet all the way to remove air. But honestly, I don't know.

  • @tommason4702
    @tommason4702 2 года назад

    People, if you want warm water coming out fast at the faucet, simply make the loop without installing the pump. Pump is not necessary at all. Once the full loop is made in the warm water line, warm water will circulate through the warm water pipe by convection effect where hot water expands in the heater and forces the water to move through the loop to colder region and back into the heater and continue the cycle. I had a water pump installed but failed and I took it out and bypassed it and I still get nice hot water very quickly better than ever before with no headache to deal with failing pump or timer. Pump and timer are expensive and difficult to maintain and absolutely not needed in most residential use. If you do not believe me, try first before you take the trouble of installing one.

      You are correct. Some of the water that been through water heater will get to the cold water lines.You can always run a couple of gallons of water before drinking it. Doesn't this system mean that you will have Temped water in the cold water line when you want an Cold drink of water? If you don't want Temped cold water you would need to run a return line back to the tank. I'm I incorrect in my understanding?

    • @LegacyHandyman
      @LegacyHandyman  2 года назад

      Yes this will get warm water in your cold line but temperature difference is not dramatic. If you able and willing to run separate lines it is better options for you . Beauty of this system that it is least invasive option.

    A plumber installed this Watts hot water recirculating pump last August. After 14 months, the pump starts making vibration buzzing loud noise. I asked the plumber who installed this Watts hot water recirculating pump and he said he doesn’t know why and he can’t fix it. He told me that he will replace a pump with the cost of $450.00 . That’s is too high. Is anyone have the same issue as mine? Any advise or video how to fix the noise issue? Thank you in advance!

      It is water pump with motor and bearings. Moving parts can fail. I would talk to Watts and have them send you replacement. However it will be challenging after 14 month.

    To recirc back to the water heater im assuming that pump needs to be pushing more pressure than what is coming in. A true recirculating system would have another hose rigged in to make a loop...(yes ofcourse that is not easy to do) im just concerned that pump will need to put alot more pressure to push against the main pressure coming in. Im justban oilfield worker that understands flow and pressure , but i would like someone to chime in and help me get this out of my head. Thanks and carry on!!

    • @LegacyHandyman
      @LegacyHandyman  4 года назад +1

      Regular household pressure anywhere from 40 to 50 psi so if you got 10 more psi that's 20% over the regular pressure . You do install loop around under the sink that needs a hot water . Onese hot water pressure pushes the hot water to that sink, thermal switch will switch off when temperature reaches set parameters. I hope it makes sense so feel free to ask . This video was filmed over a year ago at my house The system still works fine only upgrade I did I installed smart switch instead of built-in timer.

      @@LegacyHandymanmakes sense ... only part that still has me thinking more than it should... is the water pushes back into the hot water tank through the cold water line ... and how much room is in the water heater .?.. ok i think it just hit me., water heater will not pull on any more water because of maybe some kind of floater valve that is closed since it is already full??

    I just removed this device from my house. It is acting weird. When I turn on shower, it takes 5 minutes to get hot water, and as soon as I turn off the shower, and turn it back on, it is cold again. I suspect that the sensor valve has stopped working. I do confirm the censor valve has connected the right pipes.

      yes I recommend checking sensor valves once a year. Replace as needed.

    I installed one of these Watts hot water recirculating systems in my new construction home and it does not make any difference in the time to get hot water at any of my faucets. I even tried installing multiple valves under each of my sinks hoping that would allow it to work properly. Anyone else experiencing issues like this?

    • @evenflow3256

      The recirculating line is supposed to connect at the bottom of the tank where the drain spigot is, not the top.

      I am. I installed it in January and had success. The water was too hot in the kitchen so in April I reduced the water heater temp. I did a few other minor things like adjusting the pump from timer to on and now I have no hot water for minutes before it comes. In May I have replaced the valve even though it was only 4 months old and returned the temp back up to 150. I am pretty upset that I had almost instant hot water and now I cannot make it work like it should.

      40 ft plus distance to the attic and back down in some cases. It could be already 50 or 60.
