- Haven't been out to the middle section of Penns Creek in two years, so off we go to the Poe Paddy Campground area with Owen from Osny-Fishing-Adventures. No wind, mild temps and perfect water set the recipe for a good day. Then a decent snow fall came in around noon and that helped the fish to keep feeding good for the rest of the day. All brownies were post spawn, good healthy fish but a little on the skinny side. I think it was a great first time experience for Owen, he got to see one of our awesome classic trout streams here in PA. Check out Owen's sight on RUclips.
Of all your videos, this is one of the prettiest with the snow on the trees you guys catching fish, beautiful! thanks
Douglas Randall Hi Doug! It sure was a beautiful day, catching trout was the icing on the cake. Thanks for all your support!
Aweosme video Scott, had a great time fishing yesterday in the snow!🎣☃️❄️ Can’t thank you anough for letting me come along! we’ll deff have to make another run to penns sometime in the future, once the Tully’s fishing well again we should deff give that a shot as well! Tight lines, and keep up the great work!!!💯🎣💦
Osny Fishing Adventures Hey Owen! Thank you Buddy! Had a great time. More adventures ahead, stay in touch.
Thank you for sharing your nymphing rig.
Keep up the nice work…
Tight lines from Wild Trout Man. 👊
Thank you brother! You’re welcome and my pleasure. Hope you get a chance to fish Penns, especially nice in the Winter. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 yeah, I’d like to hit Penns in the winter. How fun catching them in the snow. It’s a drive to get there but now I’m thinking about it. Is Poe Paddy open for winter camping?
@@WildTroutMan I don’t know but I think the campground may be closed for the Winter. Brrr! 🥶 Winter camping, not for me. And for me, I catch fish outta the same exact water year round. Check their website. Good luck and have fun!
@@pawoodsnwater7551 yeah, good water holds fish year round. When I was younger I thought trout go into hibernation mode in the winter but it’s not the case. They still eat. The first fly fishing RUclips video I produced was a class A wild trout stream in February with over a foot of snow. I just went out to test my camera gear and the fish were on fire smacking a pheasant tail nymph dropper so I filmed my first episode. Stunningly beautiful in the snow with native brookies. Not for everyone but I love it. Lots of solitude on the stream with breathtaking scenery. Now I wish I wasn’t at work but on the stream. Lol. Keep up the good work!! 👊
I see you got together with Owen, I have been keeping up with his outings on the stream. I must say he could not have found a better mentor for a day on the Penns. The video was a real gem glad you guys did so well, looking forward to seeing Owens video his enthusiasm really gets me going...Tight Lines.
Len Sherlinski Hi Len! Ha ha! Yes, his enthusiasm is infectious. Had a super fun day together. Nice to hear from you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Just got finished watching Owen's video, LOL, man I didn't know you could swing through the trees like Tarzan...Made my day...This is a keeper for sure...Tight Lines
Len Sherlinski Ha Ha! Told another viewer, Owen showed off my monkey man skills, glad he didn’t include me tripping and falling in the Creek, that’s blackmail footage 😂. Thanks Len!
Love fishing in the snow rain or sleet. I’m hooked on winter fishing now. Looks like Owen did well also….nice fish…
Hi Phil! Oh yes, besides fly fishing being a challenge, then adding the elements of Mother Nature , now you got memories in the making. Yes, my little buddy Owen has come a long way in a short time. Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Great video fishing in the snow has always been a favorite of mine
cameron kurtz Thank you Cameron! Sure turned out to be a beautiful day, weather and the fishing, hope you get a chance to get out there this Winter. Thanks for watching and commenting. Tight Lines!
Love those snowy trip videos Scott! Heading to my local water tomorrow, any fly choice advice? I was thinking a lively legz disco midge size 18 or zebra midge as dropper fly...
Holy cow!!!!! A midnight present from Scott !!! Nice video guys ! Like number 25 from me. I’ll be out on Sunday! New video soon 😁
Downstream & Downrange Hey Bud! Ha! Pulled an all day editing job. Thank you very much, super fun day and that pretty snow, just topped it off.
I camped down there in Poe Paddy a few years ago, I recognized the outhouses, nice video.
Hi Jack! Thankfully, they keep those bathrooms open year round. Great section of Penns Creek. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I can’t wait to fish Penns again! I really enjoyed watching your rig set up.
Suffering Outdoors Hey! Happy New Year buddy! Thank you very much, Penns is fishing good lately and as long as the water is below 400cfs, wading is pretty safe. Good luck this year. If you wanna get together this year email me at scottmxdad@yahoo.com , thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video Scott! I fish Penn’s quite a bit. Always enjoy looking at new sections of water. Will definitely be trying this section soon. Also, thanks for sharing your set up!
Bruce Adams You betcha Bruce! Boy, all sections of Penns are equally great. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one too.
Thanks so much for showing us your rig. Very helpful for beginners, like me. My boys and I are trying to decide which flies to carry for the same area without going crazy with so many patterns that may confuse things. Any advice on list of nymphs and dries for that section of PA? Thanks again.
R-n-J Homestead Life Hi guys! Boy, that’s a lengthy answer to a common question. Gonna try to keep it simple, the old tried and true bugs are still the best (ex: pheasant tail, Hares Ear, Globugs or Y2Ks, squirmy wormys, my Isonychia, zebra midges, Walt’s Worm, soft hackles, Green Weenie, Mop Fly, streamers or Woolly Buggers in white, olive and black), as far as dries, please refer to a hatch chart for a particular stream or use TCOs stream conditions link, very informative. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
beautiful weather and great fishing but must've made for an interesting drive out of Poe! keep up the great work!
Ryan Mitchell Hi Ryan! Well, glad to report the four wheel drive worked perfect, just crawled outta the valley, again very pretty scenery. Thanks for watching and commenting and your support.
My home waters. Would love to see you there sometime. Love your videos. Very well done!
Tyde Snook Hey hey Tyde! So lucky you live so close, just an awesome stream. Thank you very much, and if you ever recognize me, please come over to chat. Tight Lines!
Great collab! And good info and fishing action!! Just checked out Owens channel and subbed! Love it when RUclipsr anglers get together for collabs! Tight lines my friend ...
What_My_Lens_Sees Hey hey, hello bud! Thank you for your comment. Actually thinking about coming out to Colorado around Memorial Day. Trying to fly into Denver, go to a pro motocross race in Lakewood on Saturday then stay around 4-5 days to fish. Yea, I hook up with a couple of my RUclips colleagues and fish together several times a year. Maybe we can do a day if I do come out. My email is scottmxdad@yahoo.com , Thanks for watching and commenting.
PA WOODS N WATER you just let me know. I’ll take you to a good spot if you want to reserve a day to put some fish in the net ;)
Hello again Scott-
Looks like Cutthroat offers quite a few furled leaders for nymph fishing, are you using their 50-inch floating or sinking leader ?
Also, you seem to always use a "linear" type of multiple fly arrangement (tying fly-to-fly-to-fly on your tippet) rather than using a dropper type arrangement - why do you prefer this ?
Hi Tom! Yes, very observant. I use both 50” furled leaders, on my nymphing rods I use the heavier nymphing leader, on my shorter rods or combo rods I started using their lighter 50” shorty furled leader. Yes again, my tandem rig is tied as an in-line setup, I want my flies on the bottom most times, the dropper system is mostly used to fish the water column at different depths, my setup is much easier and more accurate to cast and less tangles and I have many years of success with it. I’m definitely not saying it’s the best system, they all work and have their pros and cons, it’s the one I’m most comfortable with and I’ve tried to master it. Thanks for watching and your questions.
Hi Scott. Watched this video as you suggested to see ur set up. Appreciate it. What Scientific Angler fly line would you recommend for nymphing with your set up? Thanks!
Hi David! Honestly, on all my outfits, all I’ve ever used was a standard weight forward floating line matched to the rod, well on one of my small setups for small streams, on that one I’m using a double taper floating line. So, no special line is required. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Thank you Scott. Appreciate your patience and understanding in answering all my questions. God bless!
Thank you for the tips. I’m interested in getting started with fly fishing. So much to learn.
Thank you buddy! I have a lot of my past videos are loaded with information. Check out my video Nymphing Strategies Part 3 for my technique. Also I have a tips video two years ago around December. If you’re just starting out, you definitely can’t go wrong with either a Globug or a Y2K bug in pale yellow, pink or light orange colors, a pheasantail or Hares Ear nymph, a San Juan worm in pink or red, a sexy Walt’s worm , Frenchie, or a beadhead caddis pupa, and a zebra midge, just a couple suggestions to get you started. Thanks for watching and commenting and have fun!
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Thank you for responding. I've watched many of your vids and appreciate all the tips that you drop along the way.
Nice outing on Penn's. Thanks for sharing Scott!
Joseph Stella You betcha Joe, my pleasure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Went there for my first time this past September. Crazy amount of crayfish in the catch and release section.
Marc Quenzer Hi Marc! Oh yea, tons of them, good pattern to use also. Thanks for watching.
Heading to Penn’s tomorrow, watched the video again to get the feel for the creek.Never fished it,starting in Poe Paddy.
Hi Dale! The whole area around Poe Paddy is very good. Very tough wading but focus on the fast fast riffs, and don’t overlook skinny water. Isonychias might be coming off very soon, later afternoons and evenings, fish up to dark, usually good hatches the last two hours of daylight. Hope you do well.
I want to see the video of you falling in. lol Fish bite better when it is snowing. Awesome video.
Ha! That fall is on the editing room floor. I wanna agree with you about the snow but as long as it doesn’t drop the water temps, lately I’ve been having days this year where it wasn’t snowing but the snow on the ground was melting and it caused the water temps to drop and it shut the fish down, weird because later in the day towards late afternoon the air temp dropped which stopped the snow from melting and the fish started to hit again. I don’t know if it was coincidental but very interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Scott. I bought some of those Cutthroat Leaders here at the Fly Fishing Expo here in Idaho where there made. Haven’t used them as of yet. The guy at the booth gave a small speech about them and it has been so long ago I forgot. What does the furled leader do for you in your nymph or dry fly system. Thanks and would like to try them. I got the wax that comes with the leaders as well. Thanks….Brian
Hi Brian! For me, my furled leader just makes up my butt section. What I love about them is that they’re perfectly straight, have zero memory coils and they help my rig or flies turn over very nicely. I’m more traditional than most. I mostly break my rod down after fishing each day, I hate pull my line off the reel with memory coils. I was using braided leaders first many years before this furled leader came along, these were far superior to the old braided leaders. I run the 50” nymphing furled leader then 5ft of 4x Flouro then my tandem rig for nymphing or 3ft of 5x or 6x for dry fly fishing. When I switch over from nymphing to dries, all I do is cut off my tandem rig as a whole, save it for later then add my 3ft of 5x for dry fly fishing, that simple. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Gotcha and makes sense. Will have to try them. I break my rods down after fishing as well. Thanks for the information and will let you know when I do use them. Stay safe and thanks for the response brother!!
Great video. I've only been using a suspender but I'm gonna try your approach with the furled leader. Nymphing technique videos are good.
projectpat0 Thank you Brother! Check out my “Nymphing Strategies Part 3” video, that’s my favorite and I think shows the best in details how I do my drift, just remember any change is difficult at first, be patient, have a steady rod and my favorite saying, sometimes the difference between no fish and catching fish is adding one more split shot, gotta be occasionally tapping bottom. Good luck and have fun!
Scott, I know you've gone into this elsewhere, but could you tell me how far apart your flies are on your tandem rig? Thanks.
Sure Alex! I like around 14-15” between my flies, after several changes if it gets below 12” then I’ll replace that section with a new longer tippet. Hope that helps.
Wow! Rainbows on Penns! I’ve only ever caught wild browns.
Oh yeah, tons of rainbows in Penns, all over. Gotta remember, the upper and lower sections of Penns has supplemental stockings so those rainbows travel. In the past 4.5 years I have many videos on Penns and most of them show me catching brownies, rainbows, brookies and even a huge holdover tiger trout. They all get along and live happily ever after, as long as we all practice good catch and release. Thanks for your comment again.
Your videos are awesome and have been a great tutorial for my 12 year old son! Any recommendations for a spot on Penns that would be easy for him to wade and cast without getting hung up? Thinking about heading out there Monday.
Mark Kehler Hi Mark! Thank you very much for those kind words. Well, Monday is a holiday, so you’ll definitely see some other fishermen, if you’re going to Penns and he’s a beginner, I’d recommend the lower Weikert area or Glen Iron area or maybe just above the town of Coburn right alongside the road, that’s the upper Penns area, probably stay away from the middle area, probably be crowded. Good luck and have fun most importantly.
Hey Scott,
I really like how you showed us how you set up your rig! I just ordered a 10 ft 3 weight. Do you always use a floating line? Have you ever used the euro lines? I was told to stay away from them because they aren’t good if you have to switch over to dries.
Hi Jeff! Well, this is one of those personal preference choices. I love fly line, gives me more control over my cast and drift, cuts through wind and casts heavier rigs with much more ease. Yes, I always use floating line. Check out my video, “Nymphing Strategies Part 3”, it focuses more on my technique. I believe nymphing is 100% visual, I know there are times you can feel the obvious heavy hit, but if you say you’re trying to feel all hits, if you have to wait to feel that hit from the fish all the way up your line through your rod and into your finger, you’re already late on the set. If you believe in the feel of the hit, try fishing with your eyes closed and see how many fish you catch. That why there’s such things as sighters and indicators they use. My sighter or indicator is the belly of my line, that’s my focal point, it automatically adjusts itself for the flow and depth as long as I’m keeping a STRAIGHT line to my rig , minimal slack and NO “S” bends in the line. Most of the time I use a water load cast which is way more accurate and not affect as much by wind vs the tuck cast or the mono rig lob cast. Every style takes practice to get use to but the benefits of how I do it far outweigh other styles...... I believe. And with my setup you can go from nymphing to dry fly fishing in minutes without changing out your whole setup, I just add about 3ft of 5x or or whatever size tippet you’re going down to for the dries and start fishing, I just cut off my tandem rig as a whole and save it for later when I wanna switch back to nymphing. Hope this helps a little. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video, thanks for the set info. When you change flies do you only change one or a complete rigged tippet set up?
Tom melville Hello Tom! That all depends, if one of the flies is working, or if it’s generally just a slow day, sometimes just one, sometimes all three. A lot of times I’ll just keep the Globug on as an attractor to catch the fish’s attention so hopefully he’ll look in the direction of my rig and go for either of the other two and that works great a lot of times. I don’t know if that helps but I try to give each fly a fair chance, but not when I’m dry fly fishing, if I drift my fly over several fish without a hit, I’ll change it out right away, on top if they don’t give me a response I know it’s not the fly of choice. Have fun and tight lines!
Your gonna have to make a blooper reel one day haha. I fell in twice in Pulaski this past year. Back to back weeks on the same rock while fighting fish.
Fishin Fritch Bahahaha! The same rock! “ You’re killing me Smalls!” Now that’s funny......Not!.......but yes 😂. I gotta good sense of humor but don’t think I have enough bloopers for a video, maybe if I didn’t edit them. Thanks for watching and sharing and a good chuckle.
How about putting your leader on correctly? Slide leader loop over line loop, tippet through line loop to get hand over hand connection.
Kenneth Murphy Hi Ken, six of one, half a dozen of the other, same strong connection, been using these leaders for over five years and NEVER had an issue with the loop-to-loop connections and I get at least two years outta each leader, I have 5 different reels and Cutthroat is on each one, but thank you for your suggestion. Thanks for watching and commenting.
ken / I also caught that too
Thanks for showing the setup. Been waiting for that. Where do you stay up there ? Thinking of making a trip up.
balor7 Hey, thank you! Well, Penns Creek can really be divided into three sections, the upper, middle and lower, and they’re not easily reached from one to another because of mountain ranges. The upper section is near Coburn and Milheim, there’s 3-4 places you can stay up there. The middle section is way back in, probably the closest motel or B&B I’m guessing is probably in the town of Milroy which is where you have to get off 322 to go to that section. The lower area around Cherry Run and Weikert is accessible off Rt.45, I stayed at a great B&B called Breezy Timbers about 15-20 minutes from Weikert, highly recommend this place if you’re fishing the lower section. Gotta get on the internet and look up places in the middle and upper sections, there are several. Good luck and have fun. Thanks for watching and commenting.
🎣 Adding to Scott’s breakdown with more details on his lower section recommendations of Penns. You can stay/rent $5-$20 night at the Union County Sportsmen’s Club grounds if you want to be seconds from fish this upper half of the lower section. Checkout the website. ‘The Club’ has a lot of amenities for the entire family to be entertained. My family has a ‘hard campsite’ (leased grounds) sine 1979 and relatives have been fishing there since the 1950s. I Have fished from Millmont to Poe Valley State Park but primarily from ‘The Club’ area to the end of Weikert Road for 40 years. Love Penns❤️God Bless and enjoy the fishing and so much more
Scott’s your doing a great job capturing the beauty Penns and the opportunities of great fishing anywhere in the state 👍

my buddies and i were on the water the same day as you! we were on a completely different section. we caught 23 browns, biggest was 15”. what a coincidence
Jet Pham-Ton Yo Jet! Ha, it must’ve been just a great day to fish on Penns cause another buddy of mine was down in Weikert and did real good down there too, then again any day on Penns is a great day! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I've just discovered your videos and really enjoy them. I note that you use split shot about 6" above your first (dropper) fly. How do you keep the shot from sliding down to the fly?
Jim Crowell Hi Jim and thank you very much! My top fly is not a dropper, it’s my heaviest fly and my point fly, most of the time I tye my tandem rig in-line style, off the back bend of the hook. Just recently, I started tying them off the eye of the hook, also works great. I particularly don’t like the dropper way , I get too many tangles. I use Dinsmore split shots, sometimes they slide, they all do but not too bad, I occasionally have to tighten them back up but not too often. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice!! Penns in January!! That's wonderful!!
WildBlue Discovery Hi Craig! Yea man, just lucky to hit it on the right day. I really do like fishing on an overcast day, nice that it came down as snow. Thankfully no serious wind. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey scott great video planned a trip to poe paddy in mid may , do you know how I can get info on access points for penns and pine thanks
patrick duffy Hi Pat! I’m pretty sure the Keystone Flyfishing book that I highlighted in my TIPS video a few weeks ago covers both streams extensively. Both streams have numerous access spots, and in the month of May anywhere should be fishing well. Access spots on Penns could be a little tricky in the middle, a lot of walking, but upper and lower Penns a little easier. Pine Creek has numerous well marked parking areas, all good in May. Hope you have a great time, view my related videos beforehand to help you get prepared. Tight Lines!
@@pawoodsnwater7551 thanks scott love your videos, and help tight lines
Hi Scott you should have at least 1000000 subs, from Ireland
Martin Corcoran Hi Martin! Wow, Ireland! Ok buddy, you be my PR man and spread the word. Naaa, just kidding, I’m very grateful to all my viewers and subscribers, I’m as busy as I want to be and love helping guys out having more fun on the stream, that’s why I’m not on any other social media sites, this is my hobby and my little mission for flyfishing. Thanks to all you and everyone for your support. I’m going to be up at the Flyfishing Show in Edison, NJ at the end of the month, don’t know yet if I’m going on Friday or Saturday, I’ll try to remember to make a post a couple days before to let everyone know. Tight Lines!
Nice day on the water! What rod is that, Scott? I like the full Wells grip, I've got really big hands and like having something to hold onto.
Seán Earnest Hi Sean! This is my new G. Loomis NRX+ 10ft/4wt, fast action but feels a little more like medium fast. Very very comfortable!
In your recent tips video, you noted that you put your heaviest fly highest on the leader, with progressively lighter flies down the line. Is your egg weighted? I know you pack quite a bit of lead in your Iso nymph, so I'm thinking that is your heaviest fly. Am I missing something? Enjoy your videos very much. Makes me want to get out and fish.
leighs522 Hi Leighs! No, you are correct, but the split shot or shots above the Globug now makes the upper fly the heaviest. Weird thing is, I never understand why my last fly which is the lightest and my top fly which is the heaviest, why when I get snagged is it mostly my bottom fly, never makes sense. 🤔Oh well, thanks for that great question.
Brian Haight; Love your videos. What reel is that? Am building a 10' 4wt rod in a bldg class and don't know if I want to spend $125 or $60 for a reel. I live an hour west of Hancock
52smarie Hello Brian! My reel is a Lamson Konic, they don’t make that model anymore, I think the Matrix or Liquid is around the equivalent, great reels for the price and great drag system and not too heavy. I think you’ll really like either. Also I think the 10ft/4wt is the perfect rod for both nymphing and dry fly fishing, especially on bigger waters. Glad you enjoy the videos, thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Scott are you using regular fly line or euro nymphing fly line?
Hi Erik! Sorry for the late response. I’m using standard weight forward floating line. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 no worries Scott I've only been fly fishing for a few years but I learn fast plus I've seen ALL your videos more than once trying to pick-up your technique and it's helped tremendously thank you! @@erikb1861 You’re welcome Erik and good luck. Make sure to check the usgs Hale Eddy gauge before you go, I’d probably hold off off over 900cfs. Glad you’re enjoying the videos.
Thanks for the great videos and sharing your rig. What type of Amplitude line do you use?
R Newell Hello Mr. Newell! I always use a floating line, this is a 4wt/WF. Certain stiffer fast action rods I’ll sometimes overweight the rod one line size but this line felt perfect for this rod, a G.Loomis NRX+ 10ft/4wt. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good video are you indicator or tight line nymphing ?
Earlyriseflyfishing Hi buddy! Honestly, just good old regular nymphing without an indicator. Check out my video, “Nymphing Strategies” part 3, I like that one the best for showing my rig and technique. Thanks for watching and commenting.

can you keep fish from the section you are fishing ?
James Hi James! I don’t think so, but not 100% sure, then again, I release everything anyhow. There’s two special regulated sections of Penns , so to be sure , check the fish commission’s web site. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Could you possibly show your set up for your chest pack. How you organize, what type fly boxes you use and such. Thanks!
R-n-J Homestead Life Sure, just gotta remember to do that next video. As far as my fanny pack or what others may use, it’s definitely personal preference, so what’s comfortable or what makes sense to carry to me, may be the complete opposite for others, but at least showing what I carry and how I organize it may for some, be a big help. Snook McDermott Hi Snook! I get them on Cutthroat Furled Leader.com they’re about $13. I’ve fished that water a lot over the years good water
Penns Creek Sniper Hi bud! I’ve only fished it about 6 times ever, always did well, and yes, beautiful water, so much structure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I live local so I have fished it all from spring mills to New Berlin hard to beat penns creek.
Sexy Walt’s took the majority.
Did great in Poe Paddy.
Woohoo! Very happy for you! What were they hitting?
Scot say your dry fly fishing with one fly would you sink the last twelve inches of tippe t and float the rest. Thanks in advance
Martin Corcoran Well, I know they say regular mono nylon floats better than Flouro but in my experiences, the Flouro pros outway the cons. I’ve NEVER had a fly floating problem with Flouro, even when I’m using a size 28 Griffith’s Gnat. So a sinking tippet usually is not an issue for me. If it is for others, sometimes I rub a little floatant on the tippet to help it float besides using it on my dry fly. Thanks for your good question.
I was back at the Cherry Run section the same day!!!! I had to tear myself away from a great streamer bite so I could get my little Ford Fiesta out of there!!!
Robert Payne Hey hey Robin!! You said it, the bite was on! Sorry to hear you had leave early but at least you had some great action, and on the streamer at that, way to go! Thanks for your comment and support.

Why don't you just tuck your rod under your arm when you have to unhook a fish?
Keith Kijowski Just got another rod holder, this one is from O’Pros, hopefully this one will work for me, we’ll see in the next video, HA!
PA WOODS N WATER Don’t change, karma.
try a new conn lop to lop
Hi Christian! Well me fly line to furled leader connection is loop to loop but my 4x to my furled leader is connected with a clinch knot, much more stream-lined and less knots and loops going through my rod guides, more smooth. Thanks for watching and commenting.
