Manna Day was a classically trained singer and Rafi once told Manna Day that he(Rafi) often listens to Manna Days songs at home. However, Manna Day on many occasions accepted Rafi as his idol and commented that Rafi wasa better singer than him. No one can match Rafis versatility. He could sing any kind of song with great ease. The most intriguing thing about Rafi is his effortless singing. I have tried to sing many of his songs but there is always strain on the voice except some songs. How could Rafi Saheb sing so EFFORTLESSLY is the 9th or 10th WONDER of the world. No one has been able to explain this to this day. manivel sahayam .Jayesh sir, I admire and like Kishore da a lot. However, as a complete singer nobody comes close to Rafi sahab. Listen to people such as manna dey, Mahendra, Udit, Bala subramanium and many many others. Also listen to many film actors, all regard Rafi sahab as the ultimate singer. Kishor da is indeed a favourite of mine also.

What are your qualifications in music and what has religion to do with music. In my comment above I tried to talk about Rafi sahebs greatness as a singer and I have all the right to do so. FYI... Man tarpat hari darshan, one of the greatest bhajans even recorded in hindi cinema, was written by a muslim (shakeel), composed by a muslim (naushad) and sung by another muslim (rafi)... And, as the anecdote goes, naushad had ordered all his musicians (many of them muslims) to come in after a bath, as they all would be performing such a bhajan... If this does not prove that there is no religion in music, then you should wake up from your pseudo-slumber.... IMHO
Manna Dey is undoubtedly one of the best singers of Hindi Cinema.
And one of the best Bengali singers To me he is more favorite than Hemanta Kumar. and Bhupen Hajarika.

Manna Dey was not only a great musician and vocalist, he was also a great man. Just look at his humility. He is encouraging an amateur artist to sing and playing harmonium for him ! I have been told that he had the largest library on music in India. He was very bitter about the Shastrya sangeet being lost in Indian subcontinent and pointed this out at every performance. You can not compare two gems and so we should not even attempt. However his knowledge of Shastrya sangeet was unparalleled. Thanks.

On many ocassions Manna Day spoke highly of Rafi saheb(on his tour to Fiji, New Zealand and others. Manna Day was a tutored singer and he understood music better than others.

Manna Dey is the greatest singer and musicologist in the entire Indian subcontinent. As they say "A tree full of fruit is bending low". I consider it an honor that I had an opportunity to listen to him live and meet him in person. The gentleman singing is obviously "be-sur and be-taal" but look at Manna Dey's greatness that he is accompanying him on harmonium and encouraging him rather than scolding him (which he rightly deserves ! ).

Late Manna Dey was a very reserved person. I have never heard any comment on fellow singers by him except on Late Md Rafi sahab and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. In a Bengali weekly magazine Manna Dey narrated his journey to musical world (in several weekly issues) and I was lucky to read those narratives. He and Md Rafi were great friends. Both of them liked to fly kites and used to fly kites in Bombay. Manna Dey boasted that he was a better kite flyer than Md Rafi. In several issues of the magazine he expressed his great respect to Md Rafi as a singer. His respect for Md Rafi was expressed in such a way it seemed to me that he was almost a fan of Md Rafi.

I am a PIO from Guyana. Mr. Manna Dey is one of the last few remaining 'original' icons of Indian music .I couldn't help but agree 101% with him for his heartfelt comments about the loss of Indian culture to the detriment of western influences,specifically music. And yet they(todays musicians,producers and execs)want to brand it Indian music or Bollywood music!! The late great maestro Nauhaud Ali onced opined his great disgust about this worrying trend also. What is really happening to a civilisation that was purely original in its 'everything'? Apparently, today's musicians and producers alike lack creativity because they allow other influences to take control of the left hemisphere of their brains. Let Indian Culture Flourish Forever!!!!
There was no jealousy those days, Rafi Saab himself recommended others particularly upcoming talented youngsters for the song he was supposed to sing . It made life for them, ie the magnanimity shown, down to earth, always punctual, even sang free for upcoming movie makers , never accepted money later even if movie was a blockbuster

I am a big fan of hemant kumar,rafi ,kisore kumar and manna dey...my personal experience says---what hemant sahab,rafi sahab and kisore sahab sang could be sung by Manna sahab,but what Manna sahab sang could/can not be sung by anybody in this world....
This is unbelievable, simply unbelievable. What an anti climax. The way Manna da introduced this guest singer one would have expected someone who sang just like Rafi Saab; but, that was not to be. The great living legend gave such a touching speech about his good old memorable days well spent with Rafi Saab. He even expresses his feelings about the state of affairs today in hindi film music. Then goes on to accompany n tolerate this so called singer. Was it some favor dat he had to return??!!...
