- Repairing the swallow tail tips on an old board. This is the main technique I use when taping up. Not concerned with losing the colour on the rail as it's an old board and just needed to be water tight.

Awesome vid dude... Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to create that.
Thanks mate, use this technique a lot, really makes it easier.
Great video, really helped me appreciate it dude
Thanks man, hope it explained it all
No cloth ?
Hey bud, not for the repair of the tips, if they were destroyed i would cut them off reshape and reglass them. With these I just wanted to get it back in the water.
Awesome vid mate, do you use a hot coat resin?
Not very often
What grit sandpaper do you use in the block and the sander? I have a swallowtail that needs fixing bits its cracked down the inside rail...what do I do about that? Thanks for the helpful video. Peace
What grit do you use for the wetsand too?
That one was 80 grit on the sander, once it gets close I use 240 then 180 wet n dry, I do heaps of these repairs, noses being number 1 and the swallow tails close behind
Run the tape along the rail but have it underneath then fold it up. Put the tip of a pencil or something and use it to unstick it from the rail, it makes a little reservoir for the resin
Ah man thanks so much. You are the boss. It's really nice of you to make these videos and reply to my question too. Really filling a big void on youtube. Very few case-specific ding repair videos. I've got a Jim banks fish here in ny these boards are rare and it is always splitting on the tail. It gets the treatment!!! Lots of resin...lol. big ups!!!
What shapers block density and sandpaper grit are you using?
I use the medium blocks for doing repairs and shaping a board. I have a curved block for concaves and a soft block for rails but if you get just one make it the medium. The medium still has some flex in it, not a lot but some.
do you sand the surface before applying the resin
Yeah just a light sand, it helps the resin attach better
Really cool vid!! I just got a Fish surfboard that has basically the same damage as the board in the video. What kind of Resin do you use? Repair looked really nice!
It's a sand surf resin which basically means it has the wax in styrene already added to the resin. Wax in Styrene helps make it easier to sand and stops your paper clogging up.
Crankin Surf oh ok!! Thank you so much!!
I know some people use epoxy as a filler...not sure if hats better
Not a big fan of epoxy....try to stay away from it.
3:44 it looked like you were sanding the whole rail
I do it so i get a better blend and get the same shape on the rail, however different amounts of pressure is applied. That was an old beat up board so no need to be too careful.
