As much as I love this game, I hate to disappoint, but the tittle of the greatest beat ‘em up on NES belongs to Battletoads and Double Dragon: the Ultimate Team.
The reason it was numbered as “2” in Japan was because the first game was seen technically as another franchise. The original first game was literally named Geki Kame Ninja Den and was based mostly on the comics, the arcade game was treated as based from the tv show hence its name was the name of the actual franchise but in katakana (alphabet used for western names in Japan) and that’s why Manhattan project was numbered 2 as it continued the second released game but first with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles name. Oddly enough the name changes also happened with the different tv shows as they were aired in Japan.
I remember my grandparents taking me to Sears when I was around 8 and my surprise seeing this in the electronic sales area which I would beg to go with every department store visit. My grandma being the most amazing grandma ever would let me pick out something every time we would go to a department store and of course after seeing this you can guess what I came out with. Wow I had forgotten all about this even though I played it for years after getting it. I'm 38 now but it still seems like yesterday.
Holy shit! Those Kevin Nash references had me laughing so hard and so loud that I gave myself a headache. For anyone that didn't get the joke, Kevin Nash (a veteran pro wrestler who also worked as Diesel) played Super Shredder in Secret of the Ooze.
I'll bet he's annoyed at all the quad tear jokes at his expense. He went from being regarded as Diesel to a founding member of the NWO in WCW to a guy holding WCW back with his demands to stay on top to a guy who tears his quads once every five minutes.
Whats so confusing about the history? If you were around when all these turtles games came out for nes arcade snes sega genesis and gameboy it was very easy to follow.
This has always been my favorite TMNT game of all. I love many of them, but this is the one that always had me struggling. I'd get to the end and be out of continues lol. Love this game so much.
Actually chronologically it’s Tmnt arcade game- Tmnt Manhattan project-Tmnt Hyperstone Heist- Tmnt Turtles in time. The first nes title is actually the final game in the whole story line. At the end of the game it tells you that turtles saga has ended and splinter turns back to his human form. The game boy games are just extras I don’t count those on the main story
Being reminded that the UK referred to the Ninja Turtles as "Hero Turtles", I have to wonder if they applied that name swap to other properties such as "Hero Gaiden".
My FAVORITE Ninja Turtles game on the NES! It had a nice variety of moves, cool stages, cool bosses, and awesome music! I loved this game! I always held out hope that this game would be released on the Virtual Console or eShop, but of course it never was. I want to legally play this game again! 😭😭😭
Really have a soft spot for this game for 3 reasons: 1.SNES was out and I was dying to get it. I found this gem at a friends house and it kept me busy for weeks. 2. Stellar soundtrack. The composers did this mix of punk-surfer rock and it kicked major a$$. 3. In my 20s, I revisited the game to do a single player run. I lost all my lives & continues to Super Shredder. I had 1 life and 1 bar remaining. My roommate at the time was watching my play through. He gave up hope and starting walking away... then I pulled an incredible clutch and did 5 special attacks in a row. Boom! I yelled YES at the top of my lungs and he came running from the other room. Haha great times.
Being from the USA, I put TMNT 3, and Mighty Final Fight as 2 of my favorite NES games of all time, of course with Mario 1, 2 & 3, and to be noted if you are emulating NES games on some emulators you can get rid of sprite flicker, and slow down which improves some games, but can in a way break other games.
I had borrowed this game from my childhood friend back in 92. I still have the catridge to this day. He never asked for it back because he got an SNES and Turtles in time! Both games were great.
it's nice to see a discussion of this game (one of my favorite games on the NES from back in the day), but the host/commentator adds absolutely nothing to the substantive discussion of this game and just comes across as a carbetbagger.
This game would, indeed, have been better on a more powerful system, as you said. In fact, a guy named Merso X set out to do just that and make a 16-bit remake of Manhattan Project. However, his project wound up evolving into an entirely new game, that borrowed elements from Turtles video games, cartoons, movies, comics, AND toys from the 90s (with a few more modern references): Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rescue-Palooza. It's a free fangame that's so good, one of the Turtles' original creators, Kevin Eastman, shared it on Facebook! Just trust me: play it.
I'd argue Double Dragon 2 or River City Random are the best NES beat em ups. Manhattan Project felt limited and repetitious, but Double Dragon 2 and River City Ranson offers more diversity in level design, enemys, and player moves while offering 2 player simultaneous action. If you want the best beat em up on the NES, it's Double Dragon 2 or River City Ransom. Nice vid as always. Thank you Big Top Daddy.
The best Turtles on the NES by far! It took the second game and jacked it up on steroids pushing the NES to its limits. It’s definitely a great beat’em up, easily in my top 5. 1. Street Gangs (River City Ransom) 2. Double Dragon 2 3. Ninja Turtles 3 4. Mighty Final Fight 5. Double Dragon
in 1991, i went to a video game store with my brother and mother, i was like 11 at that time, and the shop just got a new batch of video games and they were kind enough to let me see them while they were unpacking the box...and this game caught my eyes , back then, shops used to get maybe 1 copy of a video game, so getting to the shops early meant u got first dibs at the games, and i got it, was so happy, a few days later, i heard some of the bigger kids saying that the shop got a copy of the game but someone got it and rumors spread that the kid who got it payed extra to know when the games were coming or was related to the shop owner and even more shady things were said...i laughed so hard but never told anyone that i was just in the right place at the right time....
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 the Manhattan Project is an awesome game I have a lot of great memories of it and for the NES I think it looks pretty damn good.
This game is so underrated. My buddy had a copy and I remember going to his house for a sleepover. As soon as he pulled that out I had to jump on it. I remember making it to Groundchuck before dying and he was perplexed as he never made it that far! 😂
I never played Manhattan project i use to read about it in the Nintendo power magazine. Glad I got the gpd xd handheld i can play all the classic games.
Konami could've easily phoned this game in but they went all out and even challenged the limits of the NES hardware. It would've been cool to have a remastered version of this game using the Turtles in Time game engine.
This game will always be a thorn in my side. It's my favorite turtles game for the NES and I can seem to beat Super Shredder no matter how hard i try. I haven't played it in forever, but man. I would get so close and and just get wasted by lightning to the face or whatever.
What an amazing arcade like experience on NES. Amazing what people can do in spite of hardware limitations. That said, it would be amazing if Dotemu and Tribute games do a Manhattan Project remake after Shredder's Revenge comes out. I would love to see this game remade in a more 16 bit style.
I had that very first TMNT game that came out on the NES in 1988. That game was SO HARD, but I BEAT THAT SUCKA! Haha I even remember the game’s ending cut scene. Splinter congratulates the turtles and you see the Technodrome blow up.
This was my favorite growing up. The Arcade one was a bit too bare bones, the first one couldn't be enjoyed with another player (unless you switched players when switching turtles) and turtles in Time was a bit too easy IMO. Good old school beat em up.
actually it's not confusing at all the numbers are there to indicate the period it was released (1-3 on NES) and the snes always uses the following number used in NES (example castlevania 4 wich in chronology it's actually the same 1st game as the NES had) the nomber does not need to be taking in count when the story's are autoconclusive and encapsulated without taking in count the previous story. so no matter the order you play the games it's always right (there is no chronology)
Psssh, "Rembrandt." Seriously, dude. I really liked this game back in the day. It was much more fun with a second player, but single player games weren't as dull as they were with TMNT II on the NES. It did indeed make the way for the home port of Turtles In Time more bearable. A four-player 16-or-above-bit upgrade of this game would be awesome. It'll never happen, but it would be awesome.
This was the first TMNT game I passed on. TMNT 2 was that disappointing. But hey. Are you going to do Mighty Final Fight? That would be awesome. Good luck against Simon Miller btw if that hasn't happened yet.
TMNT 3 is truly the greatest beat 'em up on the NES! So much nostalgia with this amazing game!
I prefer Mighty Final Fight and Double Dragon 2. But TMNT 3 is definitely in the running.
Battletoads & DD is preferable to me.
i agree. it' the best beat em up on the NES. next would the tmnt 2, then probably mighty final fight
As much as I love this game, I hate to disappoint, but the tittle of the greatest beat ‘em up on NES belongs to Battletoads and Double Dragon: the Ultimate Team.

This was my 1st TMNT game as a child, it took me years to master. I still have the cartridge. 👍
The same happened to me, hated when shreder turned you into a little turtle
My favorite Turtle game on NES.
It's so difficult and would be way more fun if they have you more pizzas
Still have the nes and cartridges, I got this for Christmas back Dec, 1996. Was amazing because it was a game me and my brother could play together.
This had thee best tmnt soundtrack imo
Fun fact: While there is a tyrannidon on the cover there is not a single one in the game itself.
Also Fun Fact: Because they just stole the cover from the cover of one of the comics, outright.
The term is Triceraton and yeah, it annoyed me as a kid that he wasn't in the actual game.
@@the-NightStar That explains a lot then, it was likely done to entice kids like me to buy the game as dinosaurs are regarded as cool.
Loved the Kevin Nash tearing his quads reference.
Look at the adjective!!!
Back when Konami was still good
Konami wasn't just good, they were one of the BEST. So many great retro titles. What happened?!?! Perhaps that'd be a good topic for Hat Top Daddy.
The one thing that irked me about this game.. It was never released in PAL regions, despite the SNES game still being called Turtles IV >.>
Yeah, I had to purchase my copy on holiday in America lol.
I had it on Dendy.
Did we have the same childhood? Lol
I loved this game so much. The inclusion of Tokka Rahzar, and Kevin Nash bridging the movies and cartoon were just outstanding.
Holy shit! Those Kevin Nash references had me laughing so hard and so loud that I gave myself a headache.
For anyone that didn't get the joke, Kevin Nash (a veteran pro wrestler who also worked as Diesel) played Super Shredder in Secret of the Ooze.
And he was also famous for often having a quad injury, hence the "his quad give up" to say that the Super Shredder is defeated.
I started talking about the NWO...lol
Cool I never knew Nash played Super Shredder. Thx for the culture reference. 😁🖖
True indeed
I'm finding these titles are to draw you in more than it being a "confusing" story
Yeah, it was like "oh cool, new Ninja Turtles game with gameplay like the Arcade!" Maybe the Hero Turtles make less sense.
I like how he uses the Snes version when talking about the arcade version of turtles time
Raging Tyga I didn’t know there was an arcade version of Turtles in Time until years later anyway. None of our arcades where I lived had it.
Big sexy could not book himself to go over the turtles on this one. The magic of video games apparently.
That box art is God damn amazing, I love this game.
This is my favorite TMNT game.
The Kevin Nash part had me laughing
Look at the adjective - laugh!
Got this for my birthday back in the day. Such an awesome beat em up... and it's super cool seeing it again after all these years.
It was called Shadow Warriors in Europe.
One of my favorite games of all time. Amazing soundtrack, memorable levels, and pays such good hommage to the series.
TMNT 3 so nostalgic!!!
I need to find a copy asap, I remember renting this game on summer weekends in the early 90's. I still have my copy of Tmnt II for Nes. Cowabunga!!!
13:17 oh my gosh, tthe 20 year old wrestling puns!
Haha I was wondering why Super Shredder’s move set was knee lifts, boot to the neck in the corner and jack knife power bomb.
Don’t forget the hair flip!
This game was my favorite game on the NES and has one of the best 8bit soundtracks out there
I loved this game for the nes and you are correct about it being the best beat'em up for the NES.
I always thought it was strange there was a triceraton on the cover yet one never appears in game
Jeepers this brings back memories!!! Remember loving this game back on the nes back in the days!!!!!
My FAVORITE Ninja Turtles game on the NES! It had a nice variety of moves, cool stages, cool bosses, and awesome music! I loved this game! I always held out hope that this game would be released on the Virtual Console or eShop, but of course it never was. I want to legally play this game again! 😭😭😭
Mod your current system, or download an NES emulator for your computer. If you've purchased TMNT3 in the past, you've earned it!
Really have a soft spot for this game for 3 reasons:

I found this gem at a friends house and it kept me busy for weeks.
2. Stellar soundtrack. The composers did this mix of punk-surfer rock and it kicked major a$$.

Boom! I yelled YES at the top of my lungs and he came running from the other room. Haha great times.
Luckily the TMNT Cowabunga Collection will have the option to turn off the horrible sprite flicker
Every video on the TMNT must be watched with a pizza on hand. With anchovy and peanut butter toppings.
Coming back to this one because it will be part of the Cowabuga collection for the Switch, PS systems and xbox.
You stretched to make this confusing. As a 5-7yr old kid during these releases. It all made sense easily
When I was asked to do my ninja turtles cover for the comics, I took the inspiration from this game and hyperstone heist. I always loved the box art
Konami need make a TMNT collection with online co-op play. They already got contra and cadtlevaina collection
I got this game for christmas as a kid. Was obsessed
I got this game for my 7th birthday in 1992, still own this one and the other 2 on NES
That was some great Kevin Nash commentary. I died at the quads line.
Excellent video as always seeing the mutation figures in the beginning brings back so many memories
They need to remaster Tmnt arcade, Tmnt 3 Manhattan project, and Turtles in time but not like Ubisoft did just shiny coats of 2D greatness!
Thanks for the new video Top Hat. Hope you are well and happy.
TMNT 3 ost is criminally underrated!
I had borrowed this game from my childhood friend back in 92. I still have the catridge to this day. He never asked for it back because he got an SNES and Turtles in time! Both games were great.

Pretty much

This was uniquely quality title and the story had a more epic feel. Worthy of a proper 16-bit retro remake.
I'd argue Double Dragon 2 or River City Random are the best NES beat em ups. Manhattan Project felt limited and repetitious, but Double Dragon 2 and River City Ranson offers more diversity in level design, enemys, and player moves while offering 2 player simultaneous action. Ransom not random lol
Lol. I loved your bagging on Kevin Nash like any true wrestling aficionado would.
Hard to find back in the day. But I managed, and played the hell out of it.
The best Turtles on the NES by far! It took the second game and jacked it up on steroids pushing the NES to its limits. It’s definitely a great beat’em up, easily in my top 5.
1. Street Gangs (River City Ransom)
2. Double Dragon 2
3. Ninja Turtles 3
4. Mighty Final Fight
5. Double Dragon
Knuckles should have totally sued Shredder for copyright infringement with that "floating island" plot. 😂😂😂
💐 for the Kevin Nash riff. It was, dare I say, too sweet!
Awesome video! I always crack up when you call Shredder Kevin Nash.
I've always thought that there was an arcade version of TMNT: Manhattan Project. But, maybe I'm from parallel reality or something.
in 1991, i went to a video game store with my brother and mother, i was like 11 at that time, and the shop just got a new batch of video games and they were kind enough to let me see them while they were unpacking the box...and this game caught my eyes , back then, shops used to get maybe 1 copy of a video game, so getting to the shops early meant u got first dibs at the games, and i got it, was so happy, a few days later, i heard some of the bigger kids saying that the shop got a copy of the game but someone got it and rumors spread that the kid who got it payed extra to know when the games were coming or was related to the shop owner and even more shady things were said...i laughed so hard but never told anyone that i was just in the right place at the right time....
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 the Manhattan Project is an awesome game I have a lot of great memories of it and for the NES I think it looks pretty damn good.
Lol Kevin Nash jokes... That made it worth watching.
This game is so underrated. My buddy had a copy and I remember going to his house for a sleepover. As soon as he pulled that out I had to jump on it. I remember making it to Groundchuck before dying and he was perplexed as he never made it that far! 😂
Always wanted to see a walkthrough of this game
Shredder becomes Kevin Nash. Hilarious 😆
Loved this game. My 1st turtles game
A lot of people never seem to mention the Triceraton that appears on the box art but never appears in the game.
Oof... That shade on Kevin Nash... Good stuff 👍
Not sure which part was more hilarious - "Rembrandt" or making a Kevin Nash quad reference. :)
5:29 - most of us were in the NES bubble
I had it on sega megadrive, one of the best game on the platform, i loved it..
I can't help but wonder if White Dragon will ever finish that Shell Shocked fangame (The TMNT3 level looked great).
Thank you for making the joke about Kevin Nash.
Quality content with class, every time. thank you
Finally someone talking about my favorite Turtles game! :D
uploaded on my bday. ayyyyyy. i love this game
I had it as a kid and loved it.
As a young child I only could get up to the roof top after the elevator. Finally got to see what was past it.
I love these videos. Always great and brightens my day. Cheers
This is how you license a rom hack. Or rather a legally distinct port of an arcade game.
This game will always be a thorn in my side. It's my favorite turtles game for the NES and I can seem to beat Super Shredder no matter how hard i try. I haven't played it in forever, but man. I would get so close and and just get wasted by lightning to the face or whatever.
I know that feeling.
I once clutched out a victory with Leo 1 life, 1 bar, no continues.
Leo’s special is really OP.
0:01 lol no, it’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, as they’re known in some parts of the world”
What an amazing arcade like experience on NES.
TMNT side scrolling for Nintendo was classic.
Love your videos man, looking forward to watch you wrestle. greetings from Guatemala!
The first tmnt is my most favourite game of all time.So many fond memories of the nes classic 😁💯
I love this game. My 2nd fave TMNT game. Behind Turtles in Time but ahead of Hyperstone Heist.
Shredder knows the five moves of doom
This was my favorite growing up. The Arcade one was a bit too bare bones, the first one couldn't be enjoyed with another player (unless you switched players when switching turtles) and turtles in Time was a bit too easy IMO. Good old school beat em up.
You made the play the Mod Turtles Rescue Palooza u won't be disappointed.
The I love you at the end got me pretty good. Thank you for that.
That Turtles 2 was also called "the coin op" in British game magazines of the time
I'm here because I just bought a refurbished NES with this game.
We need an updated version of these teenage mutant ninja turtles classics on Nintendo switch!
Rembrandt? Had me chortling
actually it's not confusing at all
the numbers are there to indicate the period it was released (1-3 on NES) and the snes always uses the following number used in NES (example castlevania 4 wich in chronology it's actually the same 1st game as the NES had)
the nomber does not need to be taking in count when the story's are autoconclusive and encapsulated without taking in count the previous story.
so no matter the order you play the games it's always right (there is no chronology)
ive never seen anything past the bebop stage. THANK YOU!
I have made a video on Mighty Final Fight, its up on Patreon, will air on the channel at a later date :)
