cactus are Prickly Pear which is the most common type you will see until you get to the real deserts. They produce a red fruit that is used to make jelly. They are found all the way down thru Florida in dry lands. We stayed at that park but it was years ago. We didn't really explore it and were there for our son's graduation from Air Force boot camp. The big thing I recall was the "Slow School Zone--45mph sign."
Hi Your cacti is indeed, Prickly Pear. The lime makes the spring-fed rivers here that (what we feel) is a gorgeous green color. Yes, we even have a name for the black super-sticky mud/clay/super-glue , it's GUMBO. When you have to stop and scrape your boots off every so often. Maybe the steepness of the trail is linked to the difficulty the higher up the air temperature goes. A mild slope at 55 degrees, seems impossible at 100 degrees.
Thanks for the confirmation about the Prickly Pear! It's always good to hear from locals who know an area and can fill in some of the blanks for us. And, yes, temperature absolutely plays a role in hiking difficulty. We have learned that firsthand. 😏 Thank you for watching and commenting!
You're probably home (Michigan) or heading home soon...but if you're contemplating staying longer in Texas, I'm happy to report the "Robins" have arrived in Crown Point, IN today, so Michigan's spring is coming soon! Enjoy your Texas videos, but you two are Michigan experts...hope you return soon!
I don't know why I had such a hard time with those trail names this time, but at least we had fun with it. Thanks for watching - glad you liked this episode. -Ari
Wow great timing on the video! I live in Texas and enjoy visiting many of the State Parks nearby. Was just looking into if the Bauer unit side of Guadalupe River was worth the trip. Looks beautiful, I'm glad y'all enjoyed your time in Texas!
We enjoyed the whole park and the Bauer Unit has some nice trails, so we'd say it's worth the trip. Texas has been a wonderful experience and we plan on coming back. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great job as always! I can’t wait to start camping in Michigan!
Thanks, Karen. From the weather reports, it looks like Spring is starting to poke its head up there in Michigan. 😀
Good video footage of the trails. Made me want to explore there.
We found a lot of variety in that area of the park. Good for short or long hikes and different skill levels. Thank you for watching and commenting!

They definitely have some big speed limits on small roads here! Thanks for the cactus info. 🤠

It's easy to cross the river to the Bauer unit.
Thanks for watching and adding that tip!

We're in Texas through March, so it's good to hear Michigan's spring will be ready for us in April. 😄 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Excellent episode. I prefer Ari's The Golden State Warriors trail name to Golden Cheek Warbler...🏀
