I did my first stranded knitting pattern earlier this year, the Nordic Star Hot Water Bottle Cover by Monica Hinckley. It was so much fun, I went straight through in a day! Now, if only I could learn to catch floats so you can't see them on the outside of the work.
My first stranded knitting was a mystery make along with Hobbii. I just finished it on schedule, and the sweater was broken down into 7 steps. Learned several new techniques during the make along.
My first, and only so far, stranded knitting was done many years ago when we lived in the far north. I decided to do a Lopi sweater with a beautiful yoke design. Unfortunately, I had only medium weight Briggs & Little yarn in a number of shades. I did have lots of that because a group of us got a special bulk deal since we were in the NWT. So, no problem - if I held the yarn double, I could get gauge. So there I was surrounded by 6 balls of yarn for my three colors. It actually turned out very well though a big thick. I had learned to knit continental leading up to this project so that I could hold a color in each hand. I still have a few balls of the Briggs & LIttle heathered brown from that buy. One thing I did more of at that time was two color crochet where you just carry the second color along inside your stitches and pull it to the front when you need it. The Inuit ladies used this technique to knit hats for their children with the child's name done in the contrast color.
Hi Tonia. Thanks for this video. Your videos are very helpfull and i learn from them. Can you please in a future video explain a little bit more about yarn dominance? Thanks in advance. Greeting from The Netherlands.
My first project was your Owl Cowl. (Ishould have thanked you long ago for the pattern) I enjoyed it very much and promptly started another one! I want to do the mitts as well . I am looking forward to the November Cowl. I certainly have lots to learn.
Just be careful about choosing a size - colorwork doesn't have the elasticity of Stockinette so it's better to choose a size with no ease instead of one with negative ease (if it's all-over colorwork). If it's mostly Stockinette with a band of colorwork you can probably choose your usual size and perhaps go up a needle size for the colorwork portion.
I'm actually doing my first stranded knitting project at the moment! it's the zap cap by park knits. it has a folded brim and knits up quickly. no hand holding in the pattern though. it's perfect for practicing the technique because the repeat is always the same.
i tried to do the dragon tale cowl as my first stranded knit, but kept giving up halfway through, i guess not necessarily because it wasn't a good one but more because it was just a lot. keeping track of that many rows got challenging towards the middle. didn't help that i was adding an extra challenge by adding it to a sweater instead of keeping it as a cowl. i've decided to step back and not be so ambitious and do the spooky spirits hat instead. though because i'm stubborn i'm using it for the sweater again instead of the hat. wish me luck!
How did you know stranded knitting is my new jam and I can't get enough. Only completed a couple hats so far but I am gobbling up tutorials and I cant stop! I had put colorwork and cables and so many other techniques on my someday when I really know what I am doing list, but I decided someday is now.
My first stranded project was “Snowfling Mitts” by Tania Lavallee (available on ravelry. These mittens were a lot of fun to make and everyone enjoyed receiving them.
Mine was a pair of nordic sweater with colourwork yokes for my daughters. They were gorgeous but i also made the mistake of using a fuzzy yarn for my first project. Do not recommend.
What was your first stranded knitting project?

I just joined the November cowl KAL. I’m an experienced knitter but fairly new to colorwork.
My first was the Fair Enough Cowl by Home of Cords. Simple pattern, short floats. I also converted it into a matching hat with the leftover yarn.

That sounds like a great project!
My first project with stranded knitting was a pair of mittens, Newfoundland pattern, a star on the top of the mitten.

Great suggestion!
Can you do do this on a Aldi knit maschine

That's great - I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the pattern!
Perfect timing... i am currently moving very slowly on my first project
Thanks for this. I’m thinking color work socks for my first dive into this.

Great video. I feel more confident now.
My first project was a headband. It turned out pretty well. I haven't tried another project, but would like to!
A headband is a great starting project!

Warm hearts cowl it turned out pretty well so I decided to make another. It’s not going as well lol
My first stranded colourwork project was the cold hearts hat, about a month ago. Never knit a hat so fast, it's so fun to see the pattern appear.
Still on my list to try…saved this video for that venture
