If you have a lifetime experience in combat arts then you will know there's much better instructors out there. The problem is that too few french trainers bother to go abroad to the areas where they have to train in order to survive. I can't say I know many career military that goes to france to learn. They go to the Philippines or areas around there. If it makes me a super saiyans for seeing how I could adjust the technique against someone attempting this on me with a wrist slice and follow it up to transition into a dominant position then so be it. A front choke is an automatic loss of one or several bones in my gym, everyone there knows it, hence we don't even train it. We train transitions until you land your dominant position and securing the intended area you want to harm, then you apply breaking pressure. An experienced martial artist will just let you fatigue yourself and then do exactly whatever he wishes with your bones, ligaments or tendons. Edit: I would love to go train with this guy. I'm sure there's a lot of techniques I could use and refine in my own way. But as of right now I'm getting ready to go to my muay thai practice. Peace my brother
@@Haliconable - Typical internet warrior, exactly what the commend was talking about. Fact is that a huge percentage of martial arts success against an untrained assailant is the element of surprised. You talk about adjusting your technique, well, if you don't know what the other person is about to do because you have never seen it before, or you aren't expecting the other person to know self defense techniques, them you might be surprised. In my line of work I have seen plenty of "trained fighters get their ass kicked," just like I have seen a little guy beat a huge guy.
I think that you are absolutely right Warren. It's amazing all the fighting experts we have here. If they actually trained as much as they type they probably could be the experts they think in their heads they are. Hey, if there is something I've learn from boxing and growing up in the streets of Los Angeles, is that everyone thinks they can kick ass until they get in a fight and they other guy beats them. Talk is cheap and very few can walk the talk. They delusional level of expertise reminds me of an old Chinese martial arts story I was told when I was a teen. The story is about a boy who visits a Kung Fu master in hopes of becoming his student. "Back in the old days you would sit in front of the masters house for days, waiting for him to come out. So the boy sits, waiting patiently. Finally, the master comes out. What do you want? I have been practicing kung for 10 years. I would like to become your student and practice kung fu with you. The master invites him into the house to sit down. How much Kung Fu do you know? The boy gives him an exhaustive description of all of the moves and forms that he’s devoted his life to. The master listens attentively, nodding his head. Ok, I will teach you Kung Fu. But first, you have to pass one test. The boy is nervous. He has been waiting for this moment for years and starts mentally preparing himself to demonstrate his leopard-kung fu style in hopes of appeasing the master. Then the master fills up a cup of tea for the boy. Once the cup is full, the master keeps pouring the until the cup is absolutely full to the brim. If you can pour more tea into this cup without letting it flow over, then you pass the test. The boy’s eyes widened and his shoulders tensed. He thought he would have to show off his moves, not pour tea. What was this crazy test?! He knew there was no way to add more tea to the cup…even one more drop would be too much. He was devastated. Master, it’s impossible. I cannot add more tea to the cup. The Master replied: Your mind is like this cup, full of ideas and “knowledge.” I can’t teach you anything because your mind is already full. Go, empty your cup and then come back to me. Then and only then can I teach you. Moral of the story: Regardless of how “advanced” our level is, in order to learn we must often relinquish ourselves of what we think we know and approach situations with a beginner’s mind."
How many martial artists does it take to change a lightbulb? 100 - 1 to change it and 99 to criticise his technique and say why it wouldn't work on the street.
Exactly... The aggressor will only fall to his knees if he's an idiot. And that's a dangerous thing to keep showing on RUclips. People will think this move works this way.
+mryupjup To demonstrate the technique, yes absolutely. To spar... Maybe... I can see a reason to do so. To prepare for fighting or self defense, absolutely not. As a black belt in BJJ the first thing I teach my students is to never take the fight to the ground intentionally unless you are 100% sure of the following: He is alone. He is unarmed. He is lighter than you. You are willing to risk your life to detain him until the police comes.
+Eric G When I was younger a police officer came by the school to give self defense lessons. One of his tips was if you're grabbed, go limp and drop to the ground because you'll be dead weight and the attacker can't drag you off. I learned the hard way that that doesn't work. Luckily for me there wasn't too much harm done.
+Eric G Wow! A BJJ black belt who talks sense about self-defence... I am stunned. How rare. Though there is a caveat, of course... if under immediate and otherwise unavoidable attack by knife [i.e,you can't run away or even backpedal in time] then emergency offlining by dropping away to the ground and defending with the feet is often the best option. This has been observed to be an effective technique in prison gang knife attacks and close-range surprise assaults.
+toomanypetsful The only time I'm aware that works is if you get Nelson'd or actually lifted. Every other moment of the fight you should be doing precisely the opposite though (unless redirecting for a throw).
If you are similar in size this will definitely work, the question is what will you do *after* you get out of the choke. He started speaking in French at one point but he was saying that you should pretend to be docile, pretend you are choking, so that when you suddenly drop and rotate you catch them off guard.
you miss a good opportunity for an uppercut or eye gouge while he's that close. in my experience these types of moves don't break the grip exaggeratingly quick like in these videos, it will fully or slightly break the grip of one hand, you have to turn yourself to some degree to get his other hand loose, and be ready to back it up with something because once his grip is broken his hands are free to do you harm.
even though he was already doing harm, lol. also if your airway is cut off to the point you're going to pass out, immediately go for the grip break, nothing fancy in between.
+Rabbi Shekelstein I agree. It comes off as a traditional arm bar but he's using it inside the chest. Interesting at close quarters, but in sticky hands in Wing chun your opponant trains to pull out of that kind of stuff. There's a chance the guy can pull his trapped arm straight out of that. And then after you do "the break" what's to stop the attacker from coming at you again? He even said it himself "might break the elbow". Well, that's nice if you want to rely on "might" with a guy that size. My martial arts instructor back in the day used to make me 5'5 guy fight guys bigger than this black guy for "preparedness" purposes because I'm a small guy. And I can tell you that it is difficult for a small guy like me to get around taller guys. I always found side stepping was a huge help.
This technique looks good. Although looks can be deceiving... I don't see this technique working as advertised. Certainly as an MMA instructor I can see the good and the bad in this video. And I'll say it again, GN, when the techniques are advertised as something they are not, it is a dangerous thing. It's no better than that guy who insinuated by basically saying, "if an MMA fighter came at me if slice him open". Like really??? Anyway this technique would never be used by me because I don't see how I'd allow anyone to choke me against the wall. If diplomacy didn't work, certainly I would not cower to aggressive will.
+Eric G ---Heard. The content of the video is clear in that this only an option to consider. Titles---well, they're meant to incite viewership so that these kinds of conversations can happen. We never advertise something as the one true way, or the only option, we advertise it as something you "Must Learn"---whether or not you adapt it, use it or chuck it in the garbage is entirely up to you. At the end of the day, our goal is to equip you with thought provoking material that could potentially save your life. They're not all magic pills. Thanks for watching hombre! -GN
+Eric G Sir, I don't think you understand, they are showing just one of many techniques to learn, goal being that if you learn them all and practise, (regardless of whether you ever use the technique or not), no matter what the real situation you will know how best to respond. If you are an MMA instructor I assumed you would have understood this?
+Funker Tactical - Gun & Gear Videos and this is why I appreciate your videos. I like the usual honesty and the direction of always keeping it as close to real combat as possible. I really didn't read the content and perhaps that was my fault for just running my mouth. I just cannot trust ANY instruction where there is no real spacing going on. And although I really like how Mr. Marcaida put it, "sparring is not fighting", and I agree completely... Leaning technique is not sparring. But sparring is as close to real fighting as we get. Learning the technique is one step removed from the real thing, and it becomes dangerous to teach it without applying it in sparring. Look I'd like to thank you and the instructors for all your work. As a teacher I know how hard it is to convey concepts and how easy it is for people to misunderstand.
+nVr I understood that. It's obvious (at least to me) that I understood it. Every technique has its application and its weakness (a point where the technique won't work). My biggest beef with this technique is that it assumes a whole lot... Too much in my opinion.
+mryupjup All Silat and Escrima techniques are geared towards realism. The real issue is that this technique will work against a guy who is about 50lbs heavier than you (at most). If he is significantly heavier, this won't work. Which is fine... There is a limit cap to all techniques... I just think it's dangerous to show the "uke" limp down after the technique. It insinuates that this will be your opponent's only reaction. That is false. And since we don't see the move being applied in a sparring session, the application of it becomes clouded in the "mystery" of martial arts. If you catch my drift.
The move I like to use is a rising right hook to the ear-jaw area. As the assailant has his arms around your neck, he does not see it coming. It has to be a solid strike, and almost invariably, the assailant ends up on the floor.
+RCStomper Pretty insensitive comment right here. We'd all be much safer if we did what you did. But not everyone has the luxury of staying inside mom's basement apartment trolling on the internet. -GN
I call BS on this vid. IF THAT MOVE really worked every MMA fighter and their mom would be doing that against the cage. Plus, a dude that size is not going to JUST FALL to the ground just because you pull really hard on one arm.
Chuck Norris I know a clench is different but they are extremely similar as to the location and angles of the elbow. And that is the target according to the instructor.
this is good... i had a guy do that to me in a bathroom at a club when i was shit faced drunk.. i had no idea what i did but it was like this but i elbowed him in the nose trying to escape.. he later tried to have me arrested... this is real and a good video
This is a great modern interpretation of a move shown by Fiore dei Liberi in his 'Fight Book' called 'The Flower of Battle' written in about 1400 - which shows that a good move is a good move - no mater how old it is ! Great videos
Not saying these aren't legit moves...but most of these demos will always have the other guy to play along and exaggerate the moves and comply to fall to the ground very easily.
there has to be some level of compliance or there will be injury. from my experiences; full compliance allows the person on the receiving end of the technique to find escape/counter points if their sensitivity is honed and the attacker applies the force with relaxation being emphasized.
I had this done to me as well as my mate by a martial arts trainer. And............we both went down like a tonne of fuckin spuds. So yeah. And we we're sure we could withstand it. :(
I wish these guys would come to the US more often, I would give anything to train with these guys but they don't have a location in Michigan I could go to. And the Las Vegas seminar would bankrupt me lol.
This video is awesome! For my French friends who speak better English than I speak: Cette vidéo est génial ! Pour mes amis Français qui parlent mieux l'anglais que je parle :)
I like this video post. I look forward to more of these seminar style posts. Is Guro Fred Mastro French? I only ask because of his accent. If yes, I will send an email to him complimenting his hybrid style, in La Francaise(apologies if I spelled French incorrectly). I appreciate the blending of Kali and Silat into a workable combat system. I also appreciate the aggressive approach, along with the speed of application. For those out there who disagree with me, that's ok with me. I used to feel self defence should never attack first, but, you know, you grow. Sometimes, there will be situations where you know you are about to be confronted with violence, and waiting for the first strike might prove problematic, if not fatal. I now see the validity of the pre-emptive strike approach, along with the aggressive style of defending one's self or loved ones. Finally, I did notice that many techniques are responding to an attack, so, yes, this definitely falls into the self defense category. Thank you for posting Instructor Fred Mastro teaching his Martial system of combat. Take care, and everyone, be safe.
This is interesting. Should work fine as long as the assailant only chokes you and keeps their arms bent. But as soon you're pressed you into the wall by extended arms this move will have a difficult time breaking the assailant's structure. Do this immediately and yeah it'll work. Do it too late and you'll need to watch a different video. Thanks for the vid.
Fred Mastro: What about incorporating Aikido in your style? For example; after the double hand front choke take down & use a wrist lock to an elbow or a knee straight to the face?
He has another video showing a shoulder shrug move to deal with a front chocking attack. Why not use it here. It's far simpler and doesn't involve the time and motion of raising your arms in to specific positions, grabbing the wrist etc... With this one here, you better be fast to get your arms up in there and grab your other wrist real good or it could go bad for you.

Super merci pour la lesson. I´ve practice this before in Krav Maga. Agree with you guys French people are great at many things except speaking other languages. Merry Christmas.
I love how everyone on here is like a super sayian when it comes to stuff like this. all he is doing is showing u a simple technique if ur in a choke hold situation. everyone on here is a Internet couch potato keyboard warrior master martial artist.. damn I hate people like u guys.. why bother watching it.. if u have a better technique contact this guy and try it on him and then let's see what's happens..
I got a better technique it's called a spit in the face move its really useful you can even land a knockout trust me I've tried it
If you have a lifetime experience in combat arts then you will know there's much better instructors out there.
Moral of the story:
Regardless of how “advanced” our level is, in order to learn we must often relinquish ourselves of what we think we know and approach situations with a beginner’s mind."
Theres video of maestro getting bitch slapped in an mma fight.
Merci, nice and simple technique.
Have you guys ever thought of doing knife reviews?
+Munich22100 ---- Thought about it. Yes.
+Funker Tactical - Gun & Gear Videos oh thank you.
+Munich22100 They've reviewed karambits. Not sure about other knives though.
the technique on the elbow is quick and effective, nice one.
How many martial artists does it take to change a lightbulb? 100 - 1 to change it and 99 to criticise his technique and say why it wouldn't work on the street.
If we can scrutinize in the classroom, why risk scrutinizing the techniwque after an encounter has already happened?
Thanks man, its a part of the examination for black belt in modern Arnis in germany and that gives me some new ideas.
It seems to me that you'd only be able to bring his elbow to your waist which I highly doubt would result in the opponent falling to their knees.
As a black belt in BJJ the first thing I teach my students is to never take the fight to the ground intentionally unless you are 100% sure of the following:
He is alone.
Great video post and helpful tip. Thank you.
now try with a live person , not a puppet
If you are similar in size this will definitely work, the question is what will you do *after* you get out of the choke. He started speaking in French at one point but he was saying that you should pretend to be docile, pretend you are choking, so that when you suddenly drop and rotate you catch them off guard.
This guy should be a great stunt man in films. Real skills remonstrated.....
you have to be a great actor with a huge ego to be karate instructor it seems
just used this in a fight. worked perfectly!
im gonna try that in my gramma
Bless you Sir for sharing this real life situation defense 🙏
you miss a good opportunity for an uppercut or eye gouge while he's that close. in my experience these types of moves don't break the grip exaggeratingly quick like in these videos, it will fully or slightly break the grip of one hand, you have to turn yourself to some degree to get his other hand loose, and be ready to back it up with something because once his grip is broken his hands are free to do you harm.
even though he was already doing harm, lol. also if your airway is cut off to the point you're going to pass out, immediately go for the grip break, nothing fancy in between.
I always found side stepping was a huge help.
he did point out there are many opportunities for all kinds of strikes (in French) , but the level of the class is advanced so there is no need.
Nice thanks for putting this out.
If only that stuff worked against Muslims wielding AK47's through the streets in Paris....
+RCStomper Pretty insensitive comment right here. We'd all be much safer if we did what you did. But not everyone has the luxury of staying inside mom's basement apartment trolling on the internet. -GN
Excellent and practical!
I call BS on this vid. IF THAT MOVE really worked every MMA fighter and their mom would be doing that against the cage. Plus, a dude that size is not going to JUST FALL to the ground just because you pull really hard on one arm.
+Havilah Gold AAAAaaaand yes i know that they cannot choke like that in MMA but they can clench, and that would be when this move would be relevant
Maybe they weren't taught this technique.... ever think about it that way?
+Havilah Gold look how a clench looks like and how that choke looks like. it should be self explanatory
Chuck Norris I know a clench is different but they are extremely similar as to the location and angles of the elbow. And that is the target according to the instructor.
Chuck Norris
And there is no way a 200 lb ripped dude is going to just fall like a sack of potatoes.
this is good... i had a guy do that to me in a bathroom at a club when i was shit faced drunk.. i had no idea what i did but it was like this but i elbowed him in the nose trying to escape.. he later tried to have me arrested... this is real and a good video
Very great! I´ll try this
He is now in a coma. Stabbed multiple times. :(
This is a great modern interpretation of a move shown by Fiore dei Liberi in his 'Fight Book' called 'The Flower of Battle' written in about 1400 - which shows that a good move is a good move - no mater how old it is ! Great videos
Awesome technique.
thank you
You are a legend 👌
Love Fred Mastro he is bad ass!
good stuff as usual from this channel.
Very helpful. Thank you for the self defense lessons !
Fred is a bad ass! Its like the fine art of movements. Bravo! just amazing
Fred got bitch slapped left n right in an actual mma fight vs a total amateur lol
this move works flawlessly.
A nice and friendly Option. I will try that.
Simple & very effective.
Thanks
Thumbs >> Eyes.....works all the time.
Not saying these aren't legit moves...but most of these demos will always have the other guy to play along and exaggerate the moves and comply to fall to the ground very easily.
there has to be some level of compliance or there will be injury. from my experiences; full compliance allows the person on the receiving end of the technique to find escape/counter points if their sensitivity is honed and the attacker applies the force with relaxation being emphasized.
three13sixonesix good point.....that is absolutely true
good point.
I had this done to me as well as my mate by a martial arts trainer. And............we both went down like a tonne of fuckin spuds. So yeah. And we we're sure we could withstand it. :(
Farmer James Yep. It immediately makes you wish that you just didn't turn up that day. :0
Excellent! Nice to learn new, simple things.
more videos like these are awesome, good for military and law enforcement
bestt...tq Cikgu
Very Nice !
great video.
Awesome!!!!!! Thank you. 👍👊
You’re welcome jimmy!
I saw you mma fight by the way. Very hilarious 😂
Fantastic martial artist, very impressive!
I wish these guys would come to the US more often, I would give anything to train with these guys but they don't have a location in Michigan I could go to. And the Las Vegas seminar would bankrupt me lol.
Thank you..
This video is awesome! For my French friends who speak better English than I speak:
Cette vidéo est génial ! Pour mes amis Français qui parlent mieux l'anglais que je parle :)
Oh wow thank you
Interesting technique.
The Fred system is hardcore.
C'est génial... bcp d'humours.. super stage.. Pugay...
Gr8 stuff 🕷🙏🏽
Fast and efficient, I like it! :)
Maestro Feliciano you tech very well
Tres bien! I like it.
hey GN, thanks for annother great vid. i would love to see more from Mastro. do you plan to release more content?
absolutely. More Mastro videos coming!
Good option to put in your tool box...just in case you do allow someone to sneak up on you.
Good technique👍
Dude got skills!
Fred Mastro: What about incorporating Aikido in your style? For example; after the double hand front choke take down & use a wrist lock to an elbow or a knee straight to the face?
🤔... I like it!! ☝😀 personally, I may not use thos fir this situation, but other situations may be perfect for this technique
This does look applicable
I'm liking this guy.
Nice, very Nice !!!!
Great!!!
Amazing
Hello from Bulgaria Sliven city.
