So from a total outsider (doing research here), enterprise architecture is the practice of mapping out the many building blocks that make up an organization, and improving on the arrangement of these building blocks to create an improved state that supports the the accomplishment the organization's strategic objectives.
    I'll try and shorten it:
An Enterprise Architect helps decision makers in an organization map the many moving parts of their Enterprise, and optimize upon that architecture for the purpose of accomplishing strategic objectives.

Great summary! Too often we try to fix things and solve problems but only in one domain or subject area - we make changes, and then we're surprised that there is a ripple effect and something else is affected!

    Dear Friends,
I have read TOGAF v9.1, I have some questions to ask again so that I understand correctly and fully, the questions are as follows:
1/ The ABB (architecture building blocks) will be technology independent, right?, and it is used to describe Target models in Phase B,C,D?
2/ The SBB (Solution building blocks) is tied to specific technologies (eg Cloud, Microservices, etc.), right?, and it is used in Phase E?.
3/ The Technical reference model is used in Phase E, right?.

Fully agree with the explanation/definition of an 'enterprise' and 'architecture' ....its all about people, in true academia sense.
However, for practical reality - I really wish had you touched upon the merits & demerits of having enterprise architecture as a separate 'function'/dept or embedd it within each department.
Or we should ask Gartner/Mckenzie the same question :)

    1. WHAT IS AN ENTERPRISE?
    - Human endeavor is being enterprising.
    - PEOPLE COLLABORATING together for a PURPOSE supporting a PLATFORM
    - Enterprise is not always a company. It is any human undertaking.
    - The structure and arrangements of all the above peaces(People, Purpose and platform) is the architecture of enterprise.-
    2. HOW DO YOU ARCHITECT AN ENTERPRISE?
    - Taking inventory of enterprise(components + strategies...)
    - Examine how these components enable or constrain enterprise.
    - How components are organized or configured, how they are used and perform together.
    - Look how it is now and how it will be in the future.
    - Move from current state to the future stages
    - Create:
    - Frameworks
    - Descriptions / documentations of enterprise
    - Road maps
    3. WHAT MAKES ENTERPRISE SPECIAL AND UNIQUE?
    - One of the few disciplines that examines management and evolution of enterprise holistically.
    - EA does it by unique combination of special techniques(e.g: fw, patterns).
    4. DO WE NEED ENTERPRISE ARCHITECT?
    - No, many enterprise that existed without one.
    - It's better to have an enterprise architect than to leave it to chance.
    - It's better to have an architecture that is design than the one that is random.
    - Enterprise will always have an architecture but it's option to have an architect.
    - Every enterprise has an architecture, whether we choose to manage it or not.
Thank you for taking your 6 minutes to teach us. God bless you.

It's very dependent on the field the enterpise itself is in. I'm currently a senior enterprise architect for a fortune 500 company in the aerospace industry and I clear $150k/year USD base and around $30k in bonuses depending on how the year treated the business. I however work with a few other architects from other firms on that are making in the range of a bit over $100k/year USD with no real bonuses to speak of.

Certainly can vary a lot - and sometimes a job is advertised as enterprise architecture when it's more accurately a more specific IT or business role. It's fairly easy to check vacancies for what they are looking for and what they pay. If you haven't already seen it, my course on How to become an Enterprise Architect explains some of the different roles that are labelled as Enterprise Architect.
