- July 18, 2024, Saint-André-les-Alpes. Shortly after takeoff, I reached an area above a circle of vultures coiling in a thermal. Along with my friend Flo, flying under the blue wing, we shared this magical moment with these giant birds. We most likely encountered the Griffon Vulture here.
The Griffon Vulture counts among the gliding birds that use thermals and ridge lifts. It can cover great distances in search of food, usually around a hundred kilometers a day, sometimes over 300 km under favorable conditions.
Griffon Vultures live in colonies, which include nesting sites and roosts generally facing south or southeast, exactly where we encountered them. They operate in small groups in the morning to scout their territory for food and return by late afternoon.
