Our door handle has gone floppy on the UPVC door which means we can't open it. It locks fine but it is as good as locked anyway if you can't open it. How can we get it open to fix the problem? A locksmith just quoted £165 to replace the gear mechanism or whatever it's called. How? It's impossible to find that much money when my mortgage has just tripled and I don't have a car, holidays, tv, nothing! There has to be a way to DIY this job? Any tips would be very much appreciated.
I think I'm after that solution. For the handle I want to fix, it is the handle itself, not where it attaches to the door. The one in the video is still loose even after the fix, imo.
What size drill bit did you use to make the tiny holes?? I’ve just tried the same thinking the sharp end of the screw will make holes sadly caused a right old mess that didn’t create any holes Would you say use a drill to make a hole or use another tool to create hole before inserting the screws .
In another video, someone recommended using a 2mm drill bit to make a guide hole for the screws. Don't try to drive in screws without a guide hole. Screws are designed to 'grasp' the inside of a preexisting hole, not carve out a channel.
You might need to replace the (wavy) washer and/or circlip retainer, I believe. Unless it's snapped clean off from the cast metal, which is usually the case with uPVC doors handles during years of exposure to harsh temperature changes coupled with frequent heavy-handed use which may warrant a total replacement of the handle assembly.
The two part filler should be enough, but another option is to drill holes of 6mm diameter and insert 6mm wooden dowels with some wood glue. Cut off the excess and let the glue set. Then use the door handle to mark off the screw positions with a pencil, then drill 2mm diameter guide holes in the dowels.
hello from Omemee Ontario Canada i have a thumb latch door handle for the front door the bottom part of the handle is only connected to the door with a small wood screw which has come loose and wont screw in tight anymore would a slightly thicker screw work in the existing hole or is there a kit that can be attached from the inside
Toupret wood repair is good stuff except for 2 things that 2 part does better. 1. 2 part dries in 30mins, Toupret 3hrs. 2. 2 part sticks to absolutely everything, even gloss where as Toupret needs a good sanding before you put it onto anything
@@gdpaintingdecorating5704 i know ive used 2 pack for years messes your blades up always waste a tone and hard to sand toupret isn't perfect but the longer open time and easy sanding wins for me
@@painterman8863 Quite right; the amount of doors I used to come across that had been fitted the wrong way round. One house had 11 new internal doors fitted and 6 of them the wrong way with handles hanging off.
My man, JB, comes to my rescue again. Cheers!

Great video, thanks. You can also tighten the handle a bit if you fit the grommet screw under the handle.

I recently used M3 door handle fixing screws. Worked a treat. 👍
Yes I know of these, great solution 👍
@@JBTV If you ever buy the door handle fixing screws can you make a video to show the pros and cons.

why not use rawl plugs for screws ...
Will this method work with stripped door hinge screws.
Yes it will, I've had to do that before too
It is much easier ti drill the enlarged hole and fit wall plugs to accommodate the loose screw.
I normally fit dowels or cut slivers of wood and glue
@@painterman8863 I use wooden toothpicks, break them off once in, then add a drop of white glue to the screws.

Great video
Vary useful
Thanks mate !
Very good 👍
HOW DO YOU TIGHTEN THE ACTUAL HANDLE THATS COMONG AWAY FROM THE PLATE ON A UPVC DOOR PLEASE

it's also a good idea to add a little bit of Loctite to the screws.
I use super glue on my screws does do the trick but comes away due to heavy hands ✋ lol I think I'll give loctite glue a go thanks for that
Excellent!
Thanks most useful :)
Problem is that through time those screws will still come loose just the same,,,, couldn't you use superglue
What if only a lever on both sides are loose? How to fix that.... Thanks
What’s stronger than this filler to use? I need something really strong

Silver foil pushed into screw holes with a match stick followed by a little super glue.

Nice job Daniel.
Daniel?...
Nice one
What if it is just the handle that is loose, and not the bit that attaches to the wood? Actually, the handle in your video is also still loose, imo.
That door handle base is loose, the handle itself seems fine. My problem’s just the handle. 🙁
Just make the video 45 seconds long jesus christ.
bloody horrible stuff 2 pack moved over to toupret wood repair

Hi mate,Door been fitted wrong.
Should have a lock block on one side
Normally Mark at the top of door.👍👍
Then that won't happen.
@@gdpaintingdecorating5704 Is toupret wood repair good for stripped screw holes.

Congratulations you have fixed a door. Not the handle.
