- There's a lot of really important messages in Steven Universe: Future. From talking about abuse victims to depression, there seems to be a lot of sensitive material for us to talk about. One such message is in the episode Why So Blue?, where we see Lapis and Steven try to befriend two Lapis Lazuli's who are out destroying other planets.
What's the message behind the episode, and what is it trying to teach its audience? And, most importantly: What is true strength?

That would explain why she is so absurdly strong. Since that episode showed very clearly the more standard level of a lapis lazuli gem, and she is definitely above that.

I always had a theory that a gems strength comes from their emotions. The stronger the emotions the stronger their powers
That's such an interesting theory!
It would also make alot of sense since how does Peridot learn about her powers? By trying to save her tablet. Obviously she's going to feel an intense amount of emotion since she really cares about it. I honestly never thought of it that way but it's a really good theory.
But why do they only say it applies to Steven. They say 'your powers are connected to your emotions' but ehy wouldn't they say 'all gems' powers are connected to their emotions'
So, Blue diamond would power source for them. Since, she's the one who manipulate emotions. Imagine if she mastered empathy as well as all form of emotional manipulation just like lanterns from DC.
White Diamond. Apathetic and intentionally nearly devoid of emotion, closest thing the gems have to a god.
I wish either Steven and Lapis would have suggested, as an alternative option, to the two other Lapis(s) to continue terraform, but in the opposite direction. Terraform a lifeless planet into something that can support life. And another thing that would have been awesome to see, the two Lapis(s) fused together to fight but our Lapis can still single-handedly defeat them.
I don't think the Lapis can.

She is probably this strong bc she's on earth a place with a ton of water I'm guessing homeworld didnt have much but enough for lapises to train their abilities tho lapis has been on earth for a while so she has Alot more experience and power
ah. Lapis talking about restraint and patience. like a flowing river, smoothing sharp, craggy rocks. it's interesting that she struggles to be more like her element...and while she may or may not ever become that serene, clear pool of water, it is the effort she puts in that yields its own rewards...
...which is why Lapis is probably my fave character of the series.
Lapis has a lot of strengths besides her water powers. Her patience like you said, also her beauty, and her loving singing voice. You can't forget that, can you?
Your point on arguments is so true. When i see people argue with other people online, it usually ends up with one of the people arguing to go silent or stop participating in the argument leaving the other to think they've won. You're right about how people just bash someone into submission with petty insults and witty comments instead of agreeing to disagree with the person and moving on and that it's not a sign of strength, it's a sign of impatience and weakness. You can have a peaceful argument with people, you can have your disagreements with them without trying to hammer them into the dirt and make them feel bad. So sad that people think just insulting someone automatically makes their arguments stronger than theirs when it reality, it doesn't.
Well I often argue at the internet since I am 13 (gosh that's 7 years ago... I'm old).
But I didn't argue with insults or "arguments" in order to silent my "opponent". I often argued for both sides, try to get away from the insults ect. and get to their real argument or the the that they can contribute to the discussion.
Got an older grumpy guy who complained that people can't judge a thing he is involved with since years, I respect his higher experience, ignore the insults and try to figure out what he can contribute, in this case it's insight and the view of his work environment.
Left and right are claiming prejudgment? I'll ask their opinion on a political topic and find the communalities.
There is hate against a group of people, I figure out about what behavior they criticize and try to shift the focus on that instead of the prejudgments of other people.
And so on.
It often worked wonders.
Once the people fell respected and have given the chance to get down to the thing which really annoyed them with someone who would take it seriously so many hate turned into a good discussion.
If someone was a troll he/she would reject the respect but would also start to create a bad picture of the people he/she claims to speak for or will change his/her whole position and at some point would stand there without any support while I talked about the topic with the people who take the topic seriously.
@@Kino_Cartoon The internet is one big swarm of egotism and Narcissism. Which is why peaceful discussions are a rare sight to see online. People are more focused on making their targets/victims feel and look like crap in an attempt to "cancel" them so they can feel like a "hero". If you're in a situation where you have to argue with someone and they're just using witty comments and insults then, they're already showing signs of impatience and weakness. Same goes with Twitter users and RUclips commenters. Arguments with insults often fail because, they usually end with the people going their separate ways all pissed off and angry. Nothing is solved. And the main topic of the argument gets scattered and lost because, they're too busy focusing on the individual. Not the topic itself. Which is why i'm starting to grow extremely annoyed with internet arguments.
Ik this was one year ago but recently i got into an internet argument and a user called me butthurt for using basic grammar "to try and smart" in the discussion/argument ;-;

Honestly, same. I love her old outfit, although I definitely respect her decision to switch to pants. I just really like dresses, haha.

Seeing Lapis from the first season one all the way through Future made me feel happy because I don’t want Lapis to be sad and lonely, she deserves to be support. Lapis taught me that being lonely is sad and no supportive. I get hates on Twitter for making artwork that they didn’t really like it and putting hate comments and it really hurts me without getting support. Seeing Lapis now is exactly like me when I’m not feeling alone. I have friends on Discord and they support my artwork. 💙❤️

Off Topic but why doesn’t Amethyst take Jasper to that wrestling place she always went too? This could teach jasper discipline about hurting organics, and could give her that fighting urge she has.
Jasper would kill someone in the ring and then rant about how this just shows how weak the Crystal Gems really are that they feel the need to lower themselves to these earthlings' level.
She’s probably the most powerful gem in the show cause look how she trapped jasper in the ocean when they both fused, lifted the barn to the moon and bring it back to earth to crash it at blue, made an arm out of water to slap the Ruby’s ship and trap garnet for a bit, became a big water giant woman and managed to hold on to Steven when he turned into a big pink monster

Why So Blue solidified Lapis Lazuli as my second favorite character (Spinel is number one) because of how well this ep was executed with its message.
After watching Fragments, I feel like Lapis bearing Curls & Freckles was meant to foreshadow Jasper swearing allegiance to Steven after he shattered her: both Lapis & Steven gained respect from opponents they couldn’t reason with, but not in the way they wanted.
Plus, unlike Lapis, he lost his patience & restraint, letting his anger take over and go all out on Jasper

Idk, I’ve always felt that there are people out there who respect strength. Like these two Lapis. And that using strength to get through to them makes sense to me. At the very least, using that strength to push them into deeper understanding.
Further, if Steven actually wants them to stop destroying that world, he should be willing to use force if they won’t hear reason. What they’re doing is clearly a threat, which Steven should be willing to end.
You have to remember who Steven is at his core.
Ok I love Lapis even more now!!! I could really relate to Lapis in this episode. Sometimes when my classmates are annoying me I imagine myself being violent to them because I feel like that’s the only way they’re gonna take me seriously. Of course I don’t act upon these thoughts (for the most part...) but I always want to blow up or anything just so that they’ll take me seriously because nothing else works. Sometimes even blowing up doesn’t work either. I just want them to take me seriously and leave me the heck alone!!! It’s tough being in high school 🤣💙💖🌊

I feel like each episode teaching us a lesson, is meaning we are getting closer to the episode where Steven decides to break those lessons.
5:48 I've been dealing with a toxic friend, and I just cut myself off from them. Now they're going on a big rant about it, and their followers are now upset at me too. I cut myself off from them because they were making my mental health stoop lower. They think they've done nothing wrong, that I'm just a "toxic Connverse shipper" who doesn't agree with their opinions. What? This has nothing to do with ships. It's that they've been hurting me, with or without knowing it, and it needed to be stopped. Now I don't know what to do. They are getting angrier, and I'm scared. Not as scared as I was when I was still friends with them, but none-the-less, scared.

I can’t offer any advice because I haven’t been in your exact situation, but I can offer this: go to therapy. Therapy can help you sort out your feelings.

I'll try to as food as I can but for that I'll have to ask you personal questions that you have to answer as truthful as possible. Sometimes it helps to describe the situation and the actual accuracies instead of the feelings you had if you wanna get a better view on the problem ahead. Sometimes the solution also means to admit your own fault, but because I don't know enough I won't asum neither that you are "at fault" nor that your friends are at fault.
There are often missing links, thoughts and experiences of other that result in their behavior and view but we'll never see. If someone did wrong the reason why they did it won't change that fact but understanding it will help solving the problem.
You don't have to answer but I swear that I'll try to actually help you.
Here are the questions.
1. What do you enjoy doing (I guess shipping people counts because you already mentioned that)?
2. How long have you guys been friends?
3. How is/What's your situation outside of school or the environment you meet your friends in?
4. What have you said when breaking up with your friends?
5. What kind of single relationships did/do you have with your friends? (you could use fake names if it's easier to explain this).
6. What did they do/say to you that hurt you before and after you cut ties?
7. What did they say that you did/do and said that it was wrong /weird etc and/or you shouldn't have done/do it ? (please try to remember as good as possible. Many things are or can be deformed in memories, but he have no one else so we try to count on you).
8. Do you still like (one of) your friends and if so what is the attribute of your friend that let's you wish she didn't hurt you so you could still be friends?
9.Are there other issues you are struggling with?
10. Do your exfriends know about them?
You don't have to answer all questions because they are really personal. But try to if we shall help.
I hope we'll figure something out.

You visit those section not if you have mental problems/issues but if you have a personal/emotional conflict or inconsistencies that you don't know how to handle and they'll help you to figure out what to do =)
I relate to Lapis a lot. she makes me feel better about myself, and though I think she has a lot of problems and toxic traits which she should work through, she will always be my favourite character. I don't think she will have more screentime in the rest of Steven universe future, which is sad, but understandable because there are so many characters in the show.
I appreciate you talking about this message as well because I believe it is important to talk about.

Sooooo uh Lapis' bit about true strength and her struggle with restraint and mercy hit a little harder after "Fragments"
Honestly this was a perfect case for masculinity. Why? Masculinity sometimes involves showing a firm hand without going too far. Being able to show the necessary force without actually hurting someone. Lapis approach was necessary because as she told Steven they need to restrain these other gems and talking won't work. She knows who her specific gem kind tends to work.
Whoever Steven wanted to not do that despite each fail attempt. This pushed Lapis to lose that restrain and not only capture them, but to nearly kill them.
Lapis almost lost that control.
Toon Ruin I love Lapis Lazuli she is like me a survivor who suffered&grown as a person or a gem&I agree with you that the real sign of strength is to control how you stand up for yourself with out hurting the other&only fight back in you are defending yourself. 😇🐺

There is also the grey area. Pointing out someone's hypocrisy is a comment directly against them as a person, but it's also a very valid point. It's not a cheap shot to point out hypocrisy and call someone on their bullshit.

I loved her character and her redemption arc and I think you did a good job summing up some of the reasons why
you make a great point with this video, a very important one - however that's not the takeaway i had from this episode.
my takeaway was: no matter how far people think or claim Lapis has come, she's still the same person she was in Jail Break. things get a point where she decides people need to be punished, and then she will punish them with extreme, overwhelming force. no slap on the wrist, no wind up. from 0 to 100 in 0.1 seconds.
every single conflict with Lapis ends this way. it's her way or the highway. the fact that people don't see that is terrifying.
I'm hoping the crewniverse is playing the long game and that there will be an episode where Lapis' behavior gets called out (like Steven has (eventually, in some cases) done with every single other character in the show when they have behaved in a toxic or problematic way), but at this point I doubt it. it feels like an incredible oversight to have a character as dangerous and as toxic as Lapis just be allowed to act however she wants and never face any consequences for her actions - this is a very dangerous message.
Lapis is a power fantasy. a revenge fantasy. she's the quintessential dark and broody teenage girl who's been wrongfully and unjustly targeted with some kind of abuse-escapism daydream fantasy drug. nothing is your fault because you've been driven to breaking point! look at all the pain they're in now, it's all their own fault - they made you hurt them!
sweet, sweet righteous revenge, with all the blame on someone else.
if Lapis had shown true patience and restraint in this episode she wouldn't have snapped, period. even if she eventually stopped herself, the fact still remains that she did snap (i know that's not the point you were making, but others have).
I would agree with your interpretation of this episode more if Steven would have taken Lapis back home *before* Lapis snapped. if they had just gone "we can't reason with these guys" and Lapis maybe argued with him and got riled up, but then calmed herself down - by *herself*, on her own initiative, because she realized what she was doing, not because of Steven's or anyone else's reaction to her behavior.
I would agree even more if the episode had ended with them going back home and reaching the conclusion (summarized by Garnet) "you can't make everyone see your point of view, that may be hard to accept, but it's true. sometimes people need time to process new information, sometimes people just don't want to change. or listen. then the best thing to do is to walk away" - if that had happened (imo that would have been a much better lesson for people to learn), I would be willing to step down from my well-established Lapis is a terrible person-soap box and say that Lapis actually had had some character development for once.

The Crystal Gem Lapis Lazuli is my favorite in the Steven Universe show. 💧💧💙💙📺📺💎💎🩷🩷 The behaviors and personalities that both the Mean and Nice Lapis displayed strinkingly mirrors Anastasia and Drizella, Cinderella’s stepsisters. 🔍🔍📺📺👠👠🐭🐭🐎🐎🏰🏰🕰️🕰️ Poor Crystal Gem Lapis, she was held trapped inside that mirror for eons and suffered very horribly. ☹️☹️😞😞🪞🪞❌❌🚫🚫
I get what you’re saying, and it makes sense, though I think there is a slight mistake in this train of logic.
Sometimes you need to show a person that you are strong. Be that in a fight, or some other way. People like Jasper and Curly Lapis respect that strength. Steven isn’t hurting them by fighting them, on some level they expect some level of toughness in tone or manner.
Once you have their respect you can get them to try other ways of thinking more easily.
If Lapis had kept that picture of strength, she could have brought both to Earth to try and see differently. As it stands we still have a rouge Lapis recking worlds.

Well, even if the message that display in this episode is very serious, i personally liked a lot, you know my grandma and my aunt makes very bad things with my mother, even if they are good people they have this ridiculous weakness of making my mom very sad, i don't know what i can do at this point, and this episode just shows completly how my mom is treated, mean lapis and nice lapis just laugh at lapis just because she changed for good and are making beutiful things in beach city with peridot and bismuth, my mom is being treated just like that, after she marry my stepfather my grandma becomed a terrible person to us and most likely to me and to my mother, my aunt was making very bad things in my house as well, like cutting off the flowers from the garden, urinating in our bathroom towels, and my mom just treats them like nothing is happening at all, if you see this episode and see what lapis is capable of, is exactly what my mother wants to do, but she can't,and i already told her to say things to the 2 of them but she prefer to ignore it, but is getting really worse now, this is making her very upset and sad, i wish she can finally release the lapis inside of her, and show that she had enough of the 2. Is very disapointing, i love and like both of them a lot, but i don't like the things they do
"Without her water powers she would be pretty weak" I highly doubt that. Like any gem, lapis can learn to use a weapon like the other crystal gems. I honestly think she would still be powerful with or without her hydrokenesis.

I was kinda ostricized in middle school and high school. I felt alone I hated school. Bullying sucks. People only shit up if you beat their ass but since high school involved police so much and the principal and teachers and faculty staff you to say embarrassing things and don't do jack shit and ask each other to make up. I could only just want to be alone. And one of my teachers wondered why I don't socialize or want to talk to others much and saying shit saying I'm regressing and even she didn't do shit. It's better to be alone than to be around people who hurt you.
